This panel started and ended with eye opening statements (or lack of statements). At just 00:47 seconds into this panel discussion, the gentleman in the cream colored suit says that "we" don't agree with the statement "Evangelical Christians are Republicans" because "that leaves out a whole lot of Evangelical Christians who happen to be African American, and also, in many cases, Latino". I don't know if that was a Freudian slip or if he intended to make the direct statement that Republican=White. That is a very strong statement with a lot of implications. If it were not widely accepted as true, there would be heavy push back against making a statement like that, yet no one even batted an eye when he said it. It is hard to argue that the Republican Party is not the party of White supremacy and systemic racism when an expert panel member can make a statement like that and no one dissents or corrects him. And again at 59:09 minutes when the all male panel has no answer for an audience member asking why Evangelicals claim they supported Trump because he is a "good father" when Hilary displayed true Christian values by honoring her wedding vows in the face of her husband's very public betrayal, maintaining a career, and raising a happy and well-adjusted daughter who has not been plagued by the high-profile scandals and divorces that Trumps children have had. The crickets and ultimate lack of an answer were all the answer needed. White Cristianity has absolutely no interest in actual Christian values.

The conservative evangelical and conservative Catholic (white) alliance is fundamentally key to understanding all this. It implicates a sort of fusion of different varieties of Western Christianity in a crusade for "tradition" -which means different things to different right-wingers, but seems to involve the general theme of Europeanness, and particularly Western Europeanness. In some cases, members are immersed in the Middle Ages, and display lots of Medieval terminology on social media. "Coats of Arms" and other symbols of heraldry are now openly exhibited by white Christian nationalists. Massive demographic changes are taking place, unlike anything that's ever happened in US history. It will be far more intense and disruptive than any divisions that have ever existed between white Protestants and Catholics, for the threat they perceive this time is deeply cultural and deeply racial.

As an African American I appreciate what is being said. Its good to have a full understanding of what and why things in our county are changing and the personal views of people different from ourselves. That being said I don't hear him mentioning education as part of the decline. Not just within the white church but all Christian churches. The more educated your society becomes the less religious they become.
