I understand completely why Rongpei chose to accompany Ruyi to the underworld instead of staying behind in that pit of spiteful vipers. That one cup of tea had so much meaning, and its a shame that most western audiences won’t understand the significance of this quiet moment. Ruyi is an empress, and there are strict rules on how a an ordinary person can behave regarding her. Rongpei could be executed for even daring to sit down in her presence--much less drink from her cup or speak of intimate things. Ruyi is utterly demolishing centuries of conditioning and social expectations with that cup of tea. In this moment she and Rongpei arent empress and servant-they’re just two old friends reminiscing together. No other Empress would so much as consider such a thing, much less do it. This is a giant middle finger to the establishment and an acknowledgement of Rongpei as a human being. As an equal. Ten thousand thank yous are in that little cup of tea.

When Ruyi said to change the tea, she is telling Rongpei to find a new master. In the book, Rongpei actually said she likes the old and cold tea, indicating that she wants to follow Ruyi to the end.

When she sat and reminiscing about the past, this made me cried. She’s such a loving soul.

Ruyi is the epitome of someone that is wayyyy too good for their significant other.

He's probably sad because he can't abuse her anymore she's now free

Man I just bawled my eyes out in this finale. I fell in love with Ruyi, a made-up persona on the tv screen. She is just so beautiful inside and out. I felt every moment of her portrayal from the childhood romance, the anger and frustration of when she was betrayed and schemed against, and perhaps most tuggingly when she slowly lost her love for that ugly dude towards the end. It's like, I truly understood her when she cut her hair in that throe of sadness and anger, when she burnt the picture, the walk up the observatory alone to perhaps recapture what was already gone, the tea with Rongpei when she finally explained how she had actually stopped feeling the affection. My heart broke, but it broke slowly, and I actually wanted to feel it. This was such a quality time spent. Casting Zhou Xun to play Ruyi has been one of the best decisions made in the history of C-drama.

During the time on the boat, when she separated ways with him, she has said that the emperor never longed for any of the women only until they died. Then he had started grieving and started caring. Well that's true and that's what he exactly did after she died.

i cried... not for the Emperor and Ruyi... but for Hongli and Qingying. There's a ost by this drama 梅香如故 and there is a sentence that said, "若有来世，盼你我结寻常布衣。再相约不离不弃。" It means, if there is another life, i wish that we can meet again as commoners (civilians, 寻常布衣 is a reference to what commoners wear compared to the Emperor's dragon robe and Ruyi's Phoenix dress), and then we can uphold the promise of not leaving or despising each other. The lyrics were part of Ruyi's line in the drama "原来年少情深，也可以走到两看相厌." It talks abt the vicissitudes of life. (兰因絮果) 花开花落自有时日。

And still, he had to ask "Why?" Proof he never saw the pain he caused her

When Rongpei said "you have suffered a lot in the palace" my tears starting to fall😭😭its too painful for her to see her empress suffered😭and the way Ruyi mentioned all the deceased concubines i feel sorry for them😭😭

The Empress and her servant.. their acting is very good.. i feel it.. i can see it.. the souls, the expression, the emotions, the words.. even the small details, they deliver it perfectly.. they are not cry, but you cry for them..

When Rongpei asked Ruyi if she still loved or missed the Emperor...she paused & sadly she said NO....She lost that loving feeling.....GONE FOR SURE.....she had enough of his uncaring loved for her.

In a way Ruyi not only died of an illness but also a broken heart. After years of no love from her husband and him being cruel to her. Practically punishing her for daring to care for another man because all she wanted was someone to speak with on a more personal level. Making that man suffer physically while she suffered spiritually. In the end all she was left with was a broken heart, memories of love from the past, illness and the last person she called a friend. In the end those two went to the next life and I hope Ruyi finds her real love again and so does Rongpei.

Such a horrible man he is, i loved that the emperor died of old age, and lived his days after Ruyi grieving in regret and anger to himself,. and Ruyi coz her last acts on earth was to disobey him, i remember him saying that no one can disobey him coz he is the emperor, he deserves that,. being alone and discontent

He dared to ask "why?" Had he forgotten that he promise her his love & protection but instead he continued to lust over new younger girls? Did not trust her? Ask her to force kill concubine who fell out of his favour? did not seek justice for her son? humiliate her? Believe all the lies? Killed her friends and bodyguard? And worst of all, very casually sent her to the cold palace to die? She had tuberculosis there and died from it. She refused medical attention so she could die therefore leaving his "golden cage" and she did this because after all that he had done to her, there wasn't any love left therefore no reason to remain.

When ruyi looks up at the birds flying over and the music playing, I can’t help but get teary eyed. She looked up at the birds too after she cut her hair. I’ve cried so much for this soap opera, never has another show made me this emotional.

I love how her maid or whatever she was basically died of a heart a broken heart while the husband just got angry

Bitter sweet ending. I love how Ruyi finally reminiscing only her good memory with the emperor, she forgive him and free from him. Ruyi passed away in peace. She is like sleeping. Sleeping beauty And I m glad ruyi did not give anything to the emperor, not even her pictures. She want to be completely free from him as she has lived her life in living hell because of him. The emperor is fully regret and I love how suffer he was until his last breath

I honestly love her acting skills, I can feel the pain from her eyes.

when ruyi said to rongpei "the tea is fainth, find new pot and fill it with new tea" is mean she ask to rong pei that she must find new master and get new life because her life (ruyi) is not longer again

This version of Empress of the Nara clan is my favorite. The lense we view women with in history often assumes that if a woman had power, she must have been wicked and cruel to achieve it, and therefore when she falls (Empress Nara was almost entirely erased from history, most likely by Qianglong Emperor) she deserves it. But this Empress Nara, Ruyi, was never pointlessly cruel. She only ever defended herself and her loved ones, never schemed against someone unjustly, and most importantly, she truly loved Qianglong Emperor. I really like to think that this is more to what she was like, someone in love who let herself be pushed time and again by the man she loved, until finally he crossed the line beyond forgiveness and she had to give up him for good. I feel like with the way we've been learning about how misogynistic and inaccurate some of our takes on historical events have been, this rendition is possible.

This scene is so great. RuYi died on her own terms. The Emperor Qianlong look after he dismisses everyone out of his sleeping quarters. When he's questioning why she never told him. She was serious with her words. You lost her love and friendship long ago. She's not going to waste anymore energy on you.

No one else had what she had. A gracious and classy Empress to good for him. I do think he loved her more than anyone else. They had childhood ties that no one else had but he couldn't live up to her high standards or equal her. She was so much better than him. So sad. She probably got Tuberculosis from the years she was in the cold palace. He was responsible. It's hard to watch this without tear in your eyes. Since she was a real historical person I hope she is at peace in God's care. She deserves it RIP beautiful queen 🙏💞

It was so annoying to watch the times over and over again he mistreated women who wholeheartedly loved him and he saw them as nothing. Ruyi was the person he loved before even being emperor but after treated her like shit and expected her to still love and respect him. He humiliated her and disrespected their children who past by not giving justice. He constantly said he was alone when he had her who forgave and loved him until the bitter end and he still treated her like she meant nothing its said that women in those days wanted to be apart of the harem so bad. Not knowing power, struggle, death and loneliness is all they would get but never true love.

Main actress Zhou Xun is the soul of the entire act. At 46 she looks amazing and so is the acting. I would consider this is the end of the series; no need to watch the remaining!

Such a beautiful love story. Soulmates torn apart by the harsh imperial rules and duties. I remember in one of the last episodes, emperor said his love is governed by rules. That's his downfall. Ruyi's love is so pure that even the Empress dowager appreciated this. Ruyi coveted neither power nor position. But the Emperor didn't have his priorities set straight. Over the years, he slowly killed the great and pure love that Ruyi had for him. It's so true that when a woman constantly gets hurt, overtime, no matter how strong the love she had for her husband, it will eventually die a natural death; it will be such that nothing will hurt her anymore and will matter. Hope the spirit of beautiful empress Ruyi is now in peace.

He didn’t deserve her at all. She was so tolerant of his behaviour. I was upset when he lived to a ripe old age.

Finally she said it out loud when asked.. Do you love the Emperor? No! That was over on the last slap. When she was sent again to the cold place. When her personal guard and friend was killed. When he didn't investigation on all the lies and dealth of their child.. When she finally came to her sense that only one person loved the other. Now I see why she cut out their picture ...

As per usual, by the time he regrets, the person is already dead. His sentiments mean nothing.

the moral of the story is that even if you do everything right and are good, it doesn't' guarantee happiness....though it might bring rewards in the after life.

如懿說那句「蘭因絮果」，就想起甄嬛傳皇上駕崩前說的「就像流沙逝於掌心，終於也都沒有了」。最是無情帝王家，這個結局只有無盡的悲涼。

Life in the forbidden City must've been really strict and miserable. You get to be semi permanently stuck inside like a cage. Ruyi looking at all the palaces and all the structures before she passed away symbolizes so much not just their childhood but how her life completely changed when she chose to marry him and acknowledging everything that have happened in the last decades. And even her affection for Rongpei. It reminds me of all those characters in this series and the other series's as well before they passed away inside. It's powerful meaningful yet deeply sad. I still go back to this video or these scene of the series because it's the only scene in the entirety where the emperor truly showed so much genuine affection for Ruyi. Or at least a sense of regret and pity. And that it's in the very end and it's too too late but Ruyi have finally been set free.

Even in death, Ruyi left the world with so much peace and elegance. Finally a free spirit looking for her youthful lover in the world beyond burdens with only joy and love. If it was what Ruyi and HongLi wish, hope the emperor eventually found the youthful girl he longed for, standing by her favourite green plum blossom tree, waiting for him with a loving smile…

I wonder how many souls suffered the way Ruyi suffered, my soul just aches thinking about it 🥲 The emperor didn’t valued her when she was alive. I cried so many times for her in this drama. The agony is real.

Whenever I watched this scene, I used to wonder before why she doesn’t mention Ling Yuche when she reminisced about all her old friends who’ve passed away. But later I realized when someone is your biggest pain and regret and the one thing you feel most guilty about, you won’t say it out loud anymore. You took it with your heart silently.

A heart touching end. The life in Palace truly picturised. All the actors/actresses did well their roles. The Palace, costumes, makeups, lightings, cameras, picturization, story, screen play, background music, direction everything was so perfect. I appreciate & congratulate every one in the making. Though, I don't understand Mandarin language, the English subtitles helped me to understand to some extent. Where I could find the whole episode? Once again I appreciate & congratulate every one in the episode.

When watching Asian historical dramas, I always wonder how much is true and how much is dramatically created. Wouldn't it be great to know what's true. It doesn't stop me from enjoying these plays and appreciating the talent of the actors.

she let everything go. evident in her calling their personal names (hongli,aruo,yuyan,wei yanwan) instead of their positions (emperor,consort etc). it doesnt matter anymore. does she still love the emperor? no. does she hate those scheming consorts anymore? no.

Rest In Peace empress 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 and her assistant following her to the grave was so beautiful omg I know this is a movie but damn I’m in tears 😭

She's too good to be taken for granted. Usually Chinese men are very less expressive people. They appear to be insensitive to women who look at them as inferior especially during olden times. But Empress Ruyi haunted the Emperor for a lifetime. No matter how many women he can lay on his bed, the true kindness and love of a person remained alive in his memory.

This episode really made me feel so satisfied, that finally the bloody emperor regretted.

The emperor loved Ruyi very deeply but he needs to take his pride and be strong for his people. Love lasts but a short time and the pains of love last all of your life.

He loved her but couldn’t give up his sexual addictions. She always was a reminder to him that he had ruined the only true love he would ever had. He could not give her up so he mistreated her terribly . When she died he realized he no longer could own her. He also realized he was now alone and would be for the rest of his life, and beyond.

She said no love at the time of ending and she died peacefully very peacefully and she is a blessed women on earth

Finally she is free no more pain,no more abuse,hoping that in the other life find the gard that love her and tooked a lot punishment for that.

The climax is so emotional, that I can’t stop crying

Ruyi is such a noble soul.....she had to face so much hardships in her life....good that she had Rongpie with her who was so loyal and dedicated but where was Rongpie when Ruyi went to the cold palace....

So sad 😢. A heart can only take so much, she loved him for so long but step by step he destroyed her love. He didn’t deserve her love and cast her aside for another ‘love’. Now she is at peace and free of him. She will not be waiting for him in the underworld.

The Emperor is a total narcissist. She was there the whole time but he never wanted her and then when she died he cried his eyes out. Then he got mad at her. Unbelievable! He never did anything wrong. He built a palace for the han girl. Ridiculous! That could drive a person insane to have live like that. It would be ok if you hated your husband. But that is just the saddest life ever.

Qué pena que Ruyi no haya escrito sus memorias, más aún que, ella era versada en poesía y literatura. Hubiera sido un gran hallazgo. Tal vez lo hizo y , como QianLong borró toda su existencia del Palacio, nadie sabe la verdad hasta el día de hoy. Es como si Ruyi no hubiera existido. Lo único que se dijo es que su hijo fue nombrado Duque de una provincia y que murió a la edad de 25 años, nada más.
