The Ending Of Bad Times at the El Royale Explained 

this movie is so under appreciated, literally Hemsworth’s best performance yet. I wish more people could’ve seen it, Drew Goddard’s an extremely talented man

Not to mention the music was SUPER deliberate. Every song choice fed into the emotion of the current scene. Darlene only revealed her emotional state through the songs she sang, not dialogue.

Could the el royale be symbolic of purgatory? A line between heaven and hell/ California, Nevada. Most deaths happened on the Cali side, where drinking is prohibited on Nevada side. Darlene had the voice of an angel where father Flynn was a wolf in sheep’s clothing. A line that stands out to me is where Hemsworth says: “let the allegory begin”. So then begs the question: who’s story is this? Miles? Emile?... at the end Darlene is singing to father Flynn who is dressed in all white.. however, Darlene’s story doesn’t fit in with the rest of the characters stories. She’s pure, been taken advantage of (or may not have been since she’s in Reno because she didn’t give into temptation and take the easy way to success). And as miles laid down to die, it was Flynn on the left and Darlene on the right. The demon in one ear and the angel in the other?

Also John Hamms character has cover as a vacuum cleaner sales man, could this be a nod to him working for Edgar Hoover?

I know they cannot make a part 2 BUT I WANT MORE

This movie felt like Tarantino-lite.

Major theme of film: there are no secrets. Everyone is watched, no matter how much they think they're alone or unseen. In the final scene, Darlene is finally in public & sings to her friend.

I get that today it may be a bit risky to try and pull something off like this in today's overhauled get info now society but I personally enjoyed the nuance. People are too impatient sometimes. Since miles died it’s good for him. He wouldn’t have been able to get over himself for what he did. He was suffering and it needed to stop.

I think the person in the tape involved is Bernard Webber, the guy featured on the television several times particularly on the scene where Darlene was watching the TV before she and Flynn hanged out in the lounge. According to the reporter, Bernard Webber is "well-known" in the community in which Bill and Boots said that they recognized him upon inspecting the tape. Also, Bernard is also known for his philanthropic endeavors particularly on looking after homeless children which suggests that he's a good guy and Miles told Flynn that he kept the tape because the man was nice to him which is clearly a fitting characteristic for Bernard. This is my theory.

I usually watch fantasy or science fiction, but I took a chance on this movie. I loved the style, the setting and that awesome soundtrack. The characters and interactions were gripping, and I thoroughly enjoyed and was challenged by it. The act of mercy close to the end ('help him') was very moving. My only qualm, in retrospect, is to wonder whether Miles, a trained soldier, would really have stood in the line of fire, even if he knew nobody could see him. Maybe his war trauma was inhibiting not only his will to attack, but even to protect himself.

Pulp Fiction inspired - El Royale with cheese.

I think the man on the tape was mlk cuz he has cheated on his wife in the past more than once. And I think he handed it to the lady on behalf of the black community to decide what to do with it.

I also liked that this movie pay homage to Tron. Jeff Bridges played Flynn in that movie as well.

So many subtle scenes and cuts it makes for one of the best films that is under appreciated. Music score and color correction make the minor details unique

There is something everyone is forgetting, when they alluded that the younger sister has killed before, well on the t.v. there was a news flash of a husband and wife killed. Seems like her and Billy had something to to do with that

I think only 2 of the characters, Jon Hamm's and Jeff Bridges', were actively pretending to be someone they weren't. The other characters just had their own secrets or personal struggles ( like the singer). Other than that good review.

It was a film of Robert Kennedy. He was killed in June 1968 after all.

I don't remember it being mentioned that the FBI's mission was to find the tape. If so, why was Jon Hamm surprised to find the secret tunnel and film camera?

Great analysis. This movie was so underrated. My only beef is that I felt like I did not get a full understanding of the Darlene/Mr Sunday situation. I also would have liked at least a glimpse of the film negative even as it was burning to see if the man was black or white(mlk vs rfk). I guess it’s really the mystery that allows us to add our own inference, nuance, and conclusions that makes Bad Times so great.

Billy Lee was more like Charles Manson!

For a veteran Miller had such low survival instinct. When Emily points the gun at Dwight he never realize he is in the firing line so he got hit. When he killed Lee he tries to console Rose when he know that the girl is unhinged and head over heels devoted to Lee, what was he thinking trying to get close to her only to be stab?

This movie was so great💯 A strong performance from the cast and a solid storyline. It almost reminds me of a Quentin Tarantino movie.

Great sound track as I grew up during the early '60s Black girls' groups era, and have many on my playlist. You state a lot of symbolism and metaphors in your analysis of the movie. Digging deep it could be done with a lot of film - not taking them for face value which makes them more interesting and works our minds. Your analysis brings up the morality and ethics of life and how we individually can exonerate ourselves from our own wrongdoings and guilt. We become our own defendent, judge and jury, and most often will rule in our favor so we can put up with ourselves.

I liked this movie tbh. It’s not like today’s common movies, it has a story and character build up. Really loved Miles Miller acting btw. He’s a hell of a kid.

If this was a book, every single English class in the world would make it mandatory to be read to complete the course. Symbolism, characters, just enough social commentary to be effective and not annoying. Awesome plot that most kids would find authentically interesting. 10/10

I also thought it was interesting as miles lay dying and Father Flynn was seeing him off the backdrop was fire which to me possibly represents Hell saying that this place/society that we live in can be evil and hellish and that Miles was going off to a better place after repenting for his sins.

I actually thought that Mr Sunday was on the tape. Several things point to it: - Miles saying that he was a hot shot guy, and we are hinted at that he is one ($200 / hour if I remember correctly) - Darlene going to Reno when some hot shot guy gets killed. We are told by Mr Sunday that Darlene will end up singing in Reno if her career gets off the rails. It seems her career is in ruins. I have a theory that Darlene killed Mr Sunday and knowing that her career is over goes to Reno to sing. - Darlene turns off the TV when they are talking about the murder - They explicitly state that a dead guy is on the tape (Mr Sunday is dead by now) - The tape gets burned by Darlene This would make every guest have a shadowy side.

The type of movie which in the very start makes you feel that everything end up badly.

I loved this movie. It had a tarantino vibe but was so cool and the twists and turns had me engaged the whole time. Jeff bridges is a beast, Cynthia was amazing, The hotel guy Miles was extraordinary... really it was an ensemble movie and everyone in the film was brilliant

Context notes for this film (up for discussion): The deal with the California/Nevada thing is the different laws in place, in the late 60’s i believe Alcohol was illegal in a sense in Nevada which is why the bar was in California, prostitution was illegal in California but legal in Nevada hence why the hotel (run by the government secret services/‘’management’’) had cameras and rooms on that side in operation to see if they could catch any of the shady characters or celebrities were doing anything illegal which obviously they were judging by the stories Miles told. Which is why the system stayed in place. The Fbi agent (killed first with the shotgun) was investigating to see if Miles was withholding any footage; he was- that tape they kept banging on about and that they made a big deal about burning in the end. The Fbi man at the start of the film found 2 sets of microphones dotted around the room. One for the official recording which would be sent to management and the other presumably for Miles’ personal copy i believe. These are just my theory’s based on some historical american context which is not my specialty as i am 15, british and haven’t studied history at any level!

It’s most likely not jfk more possibly rfk because America joined Vietnam in 1965 and miles was in Vietnam and probably didn’t start working at the el royale till after Vietnam when he was just getting back from the war . In 1968 RFK was assasinated June 5 and died June 6 at Samaritan hospital and then the next year in 1969 the whole story starts But it’s just a theory

I love this movie.

Honestly, Miles and Emily did not deserve to be dead by the end of the movie. Emily clearly had daddy issues since childhood where her father physically abused her, as a result she has hostility towards men and she was protecting Rose from her boyfriend. Emily knew right away how much of a manipulative and abusive sociopath Billy can be since the night they gathered around the campfire. Rose was completely blinded by love to see Billy as an evil person. Miles was completely traumatized by his war experience killing so many men on the battlefield of Vietnam.

I take my time when going support a movie. I had not paid to see a movie opening weekend in a long time. This was worth my coins. It was great to have the twist and turns. I would have love to see what was on the film or who ran the hotel but in the end it didnt matter this movie was about those characters and the struggles in their lives. Chris H made me hate his character. AMAZING JOB. I was also happy to see he never physcially kissed or had sex with Rose sister during the film

This commentator missed a lot. He catches on to some stuff but completely missed most of the important messages. The commentator completely missed that Billy was the Devil; as a result, he drew conclusions that the movie was not making. This movie was way more complicated then he makes it out to be.

i feel like i should hate this guy's voice and inflection, but I love this guy's voice and inflection.

I felt the movie is also inspired by 60s movies like It's Mad Mad Mad Mad World, The Pink Panther and Psycho.

I loved how Miles is a gifted gun man that killed many people with his gun but in the movie he remained untouched by a gun. The shot gun bullet penetrated the glass mirror .He was injured by glass to the face, and was killed by a knife. Literally everyone else In the movie was shot to death but him. When Dakota catches his snooping, the ideal thing to do was to kill him , but she doesn’t. In the Russian roulette he wins by luck and doesn’t get shot . And In the end he is stabbed and gutted. It is like saying that God did not want him to die by the hands of a gun. Hence one can argue that GOD forgave him for all the same act of violence and made sure he didn’t go out the same way.

It can't be JFK on the tape. Miles stated this person was nice to him. The majority of the film is set in the 70s, Miles couldn't have been working at the Hotel 10 years prior (too young).
