This world really isn't that far from what working in a call center is like now. One customer complaint can get a low wage worker fired whether or not they provided accurate information and did their job in a professional manner or not. It's all about customer satisfaction and customers who are more and more alienated by Capitalism are becoming nearly impossible to satisfy. The US social credit score is coming soon.

@@breadfan_85 We see in the earlier episode, Lacey is in the top on the 4 stars rating class and she's always trying so hard to act as happily fake person with fake laugh, fake smile and fake attitude. But, as soon as her ratings going down, she's started to show her true colors for being rude and curse so much, something people in 4 stars don't like. Meanwhile, look at her brother, he's still being real despite still in 3 stars ratings and he doesn't give a shit to increase his rating like Lacey does. Just playing video game is fine with them. Look at Chester, who's rating is going down, he's finally showing his true nature for being desperate after he broke up with Gordon, I guess? (I forgot what was his problem). The lower your ratings, the more it shows who you really are. I think Naomi will face the same consequences after her wedding.

i guarantee no one hates you and if they do without really knowing you then they don't deserve to be a part of your life. Trust me people are too selfish and only care mostly about themselves or about ppl directly affecting them (not a total stranger). You are gonna have to try to stop this unhealthy way of thinking (which i know is hard to control your thoughts I used to have severe OCD) but it is 100% possible...OCD is constant intrusive thoughts popping into your head that are anxiety inducing...either medication and/or actively practicing positive thinking is the answer. Lexapro and therapy saved my life and i will be DAMNED if i was too scared to be around people because of my intrusive thoughts in my head are telling me otherwise...your mind lies to you at times. Let me give a story of how this kind of rating system can be harmful. My uncle is a an Uber driver. One night one night he went to a bar to pick up a group of women. The women tried to get in his vehicle with open alcohol. My uncle said that he cannot allow them to be in his vehicle because there were highly intoxicated and had open alcohol beverages. They gave him a bad review and one star. Uber the company suspended him for one week until they did" further investigation". Then they could not find anything that could make him guilty. But he lost one week of work for that.
@sinnamonroll2780
@sinnamonroll2780 5 лет назад
I'm going to add my story as a delivery driver about the star rating system, which by the way, was so bad that some delivery driving apps had to take it off completely. Now I've had times where the low rating was my fault but there are times where it wasn't. One of those times, the customer gave me the wrong address for the hotel they were at. When I addressed the problem with her and Postmates, I solved the issue, delivered to the right address, and gave her the food. What happened afterwards? Well, I got a 1 star rating, even if it was the customer's fault. I was already a couple star points to losing my *job*. You would think that me being the improved and better delivery driver, getting hefty tips would help my rating but it doesn't. Good ratings don't even make a dramatic difference if you're already in the redzone. Thankfully, I switched to another delivery driver app that doesn't have the rating.

As Corrine said, I think it was just that; to get us to see how broken this system is. Its really just a mob mentality that is fostered in this world, like what Bryce mentions in his video-its a lot like the DeathTo movement. Just in a different way, instead of physical death, its societal death. You are locked out of a good life by everyones "Rating" of you, and kept there. And treated like a pariah, even if you never did anything to get it. Great writing, and in the end a horrifying world to see brought to life at the same time!

This episode inspired me to miss my friends bridal shower and bachelorette party. This “friend” stood me up for a planned outing and didn’t follow up until a week later saying “they had other plans with a friend and forgot”. This particular incident particularly hurt as I was planning out of state trips to attend their bridal shower and bachelorette. After this incident- I realized that I wouldnt be attending neither and instead spending the money on myself to take trips I’ve always wanted to. Cheers to the Lacies that take the leap to cut out toxic friends.

@@bkimatab Her friend saying she had "other plans and thus forgot" clearly indicates she didn't really care about her in the first place. It was planned thus she knew its happening but chose to not even take the time/effort to set a simple calender reminder. That shows a clear lack of interest. How is she the toxic one? She was stood up and in turn stood her up later. It seems pretty justified. One incident can be enough to see a persons true colours. Why should you forgive that? In our current society you don't get too many chances to see how people truly behave since there is so little dangerous situations/situations where people can show what they are made of. Make those insights count and cut down on shallow friends, who don't actually care about you. A few real friends you know you can count on > many shallow "friends". Heck even a single real friend is easily worth more than a few dozen superficial friends.

I'm autistic and I can't stand it when people are fake to me. I cannot understand their true intentions or what they're trying to get from me. This world of fake people is basically my nightmare, so much so that I actually nearly cried with relief when Lacie encountered the truck driver - one of the few people in that world who manages to act straightforward and genuine, while still being likeable. Such a breath of fresh air. The only way the truck driver could stay so authentic and sincere was to ignore the rating system altogether. And yet she seemed truly happy. The whole rating system is like a collective brain virus causing everyone to act fake and therefore no one is truly happy - because everyone knows that others' niceness is only due to the system - except those who have rejected the system.

Youre overthinking it, in real life dont be surprised if not everyone is "real" and commits their time to you, if you think like that you'll never make any real connections with people, selfishness is human nature and you're part of it too. @golmaal138

@@LYNXzTwist That's the whole point. You shouldn't have to be "nice" or kind only to your "friends." Being nice and kind are seen as weakness and the whole society/system works to remind you of this lesson at every turn till you accept it as "normal" and simply resign to it as a fact of life and become part of it. But that's not the whole truth. The society could function productively (and better) the other way around too - where kindness and decency are the "norms." I've just watched this episode last week and I realised she actually bit it like that because she wanted to take the perfect bites for the picture. Notice how she bites it carefully and then places it by the coffee for the picture, then when she goes to drink the coffee she actually hates it. That indicates that she was only at the café to buy "good looking food" and take a picture for her feed

yes, and the color looks so instagram-y, making it looks like a satire for me, as it reflects the "fake" life the Nosedive universe were in. I read about China’s Social Credit System, and I think it’s probably worse than Lacie’s world. Under the Chinese SCS it’s not the citizens scoring each other, it’s the government using mined internet data on individuals to monitor their search history, time spent gaming, shopping habits, medical records: and using an algorithm to create someone’s score of ‘trustworthiness’. At least in Lacie’s world it seems like there could be loop holes where you and your circle of friends can just keep upvoting each other.

holy shit I just looked it up and it's JUST as bad as the nosedive episode. Black mirror didn't even have to exaggerate it. Yeah the screenshot he used showed the UK system, whereas the episode was referring to the US system. A UK 4 is equivalent to a US 00 (waist size 22-23), whereas a US 4 is a UK 8 (waist size 24-25). Bear in mind that's "official" sizing, in reality the effect of "vanity sizing" means that the actual size of clothing tends to be larger than the label size, to encourage people to buy clothes that make them feel skinnier.

So for me, watching it in english, to suddenly hear my native language was kinda shocking. And it was also funny, to understand something the main character didn't and not to be confused by the car demands. My explanation, for the creators to use czech in the episode was that Czechia (Czechoslovakia) is worldwide known for car industry. Especially for Škoda :))))

A mini-essay on an issue that I've been mulling over, or a one-off observation or some one-liner joke I thought of, or share a video that I find personally interesting, but the things I find interesting don't usually have mass appeal. It's usually going to be a video essay or an article I liked, not a cat video or makeup tutorial. I don't talk about anything extremely personal, I don't share my relationship status or name my employers, I mostly resist the temptation to use it as a venting tool, I don't post my location, tag or poke people, I don't post selfies, inspirational messages or pictures of what I'm eating or things I bought, and only occasionally share memes if it's something I really like. I don't friend co-workers or former classmates or casual acquaintances unless there has been an actual relationship. Consequently, my posts rarely get more than 10 likes, tops. One person on some comment thread actually dismissed the relevance of my opinion because I have no followers, and that was weird and pathetic to me. I'm not trying to attract "followers", what do I need followers for? I'm not fucking Jim Jones.

The rating system never made sense to me. Evey vote seems to have huge impact on people's score, but at the same time they're giving each other ratings every 5 seconds. Sure, leaving the exact rules ambiguous is a good move because it would be too complex to figure out how to make this system actually work. Does everyone have one vote per person per day? Per hour? Otherwise why wouldn't everyone just spam 5* ratings to each other?

The rating system doesn't actually make sense if you put any real thought into it, and is simply used allegorically in the show. If the benefits to having a high rating were half as ridiculously over the top as they are in this episode, people would immediately form and join large groups who all 5 star each other as often as possible. In order to lower someone's rating below a 5, there would need to be a coordinated attack by another group targeting that individual, or they would have to say or do something publicly on their social media that offends a massive number of people. The result would be that the average person would have a nearly indestructible 5 star rating that could only be altered by a negative campaign launched by a group larger than the sum of the groups that they belong to. Only famous, polarizing figures (controversial celebrities, political leaders) would have ratings lower than 5, because they would be the only ones to receive enough negative ratings to influence their overall score. TL;DR: individual interactions like pissing off an uber driver or holding the door for a stranger would not influence your score at all, because everyone would join large rating groups to offset the significance of these interactions and ensure high ratings.
@martinlagman
@martinlagman 5 лет назад
There would probably be some kind of "fatigue system" not allowing for groups that upvote eachother all the time to raise their scores easily (but it does impact you if people you know suddenly gives you a different score, like her brother, or what happened to the guy at the office). So generally the ratings that strangers give to you are more impactful and important (a good reason to focus on physical appearance, false smiles and giving praise). Also, there's the rings system, so if you have an average score, you won't get near to 5 if you're upvoted by other average users, you'll need votes from high 4s at some point to surpass the cap. The top rated people are the exception, were they are pretty safe as long as they receive high votes by other upper 4s and 5s, their followers, and their workers. And negative votes from average/low rated people won't affect them as much (so they have some protection from raids).
