I think this movie is cruises best in 20 years. His character as developed as Jerry McGuire and dramatic as born on 4th of July. Probably no accolades will come for cruise but he deserves it. He had me at his opening monologue
Tom wanted perfection and that’s what we got. Loved the movie, loved the characters and I don’t think they could of picked a better actor in Miles Teller to play Gooses son
I was blown away. When I first heard they were doing a sequel I thought they were crazy for trying. I’m glad they did though, best movie I’ve seen so far this year.
Just saw the movie today and I loved it. Flight sequences are incredible, and the scene between Ice & Maverick almost made me cry. A couple of laugh out loud moments and I really liked the scenes with Penny and Maverick. Penny's daughter had a scene with Maverick that almost made me spit my drink out of my nose. While nothing will beat the original, this was a worthy sequel and well worth your time. Also unexpected was a flying scene with Maverick in an F-14 Tomcat. I miss the F-14. Just an amazing aircraft.
@@MrGruffteddybear exactly, it was a clever bit of foreshadowing. Also sets up the final dogfight for being a 4th gen F-18 vs the 5th gen SU-57 TO 5th vs 3rd gen F-14. Making the dogfight even more insane, and yes he did technically lose, but Hangman showed that he could be a team player in the end and that was a good moment for his character.
Saw the movie with my wife and we both enjoyed it immensely. Came away with the realization that for Tom Cruise, being an action movie star is not what he is. It's who he is.
I cried during Val and Tom’s scene. I was so glad they found a way to put Val in the movie considering he has been in bad health for sometime. I don’t think Val can talk in real life due to his illness. I think their scene was touching. Good for Iceman and Maverick.
Hangman isn’t the Iceman of this movie. He’s Maverick, right down to the getting left on the carrier at the beginning of the mission, only to end up the hero. Literally the meaning of “Maverick” = individualist; something Hangman is criticized for over and over. He also leaves his wingman during flight training. The Iceman of this movie is Vice Admiral Simpson (Jon Hamm). Smug, calculated, conservative, no mistakes, prior winner of Top Gun trophy. How did you miss this?
"Prior winner of the Top Gun trophy.." I think you will find that it was WARLOCK who was the Top of his class in 88 and not Cyclone. Edit after rewatching: Cyclone was introduced by Warlock as the Top of the '88 Top Gun class..
@@Gurashi Pretty sure the other Admiral said Cyclone was top of his class in 88, but I've only seen the movie once, and it wasn't exactly a memorable line, so I could be wrong.
@@traneofthought3 Me too, I caught it on 13th and 20th May. Let me see if I can catch it a third time next week. But yes, I have no doubt Hangman was Mav's counterpart. The main memorable lines I could remember? "Wave and smile.." (Does it make any difference if they were smiling with their masks on?) "The Navy Needs Maverick" "It's time to let go.."
I loved this movie, both for the amazing action scenes and also for the depth of the character of Maverick. Tom Cruise had evolved as an actor, and it really shows. His character is much more subtle and fragile than 35 years ago.
When Ice says "it's time to let go", he's also referring to himself, where he has to let Maverick go cuz he knows he'll die soon and can't be there to protect him, thus Maverick must prove his own worth to the Navy with his own merits. He may have some guilt himself too for being responsible for Goose's death, so he can't be holding onto that forever and must just let the next generation deal with it ~
I’ve completely lost it when Maverick and Iceman hugged for the final time 😅 this 50 year old guy just bawling on his seat trying to hide it from the people next to me 🥹🥹😂
I see Hangman as someone who was very much a blend of Maverick and Iceman from the original. He was cocky like Iceman for his skills, but somewhat of a lonewolf like Maverick. I thought it was a nice touch if it was meant to be that way. I love the perfect blend of nostalgia and new, it was done tastefully. Truly enjoyed this movie.
Top gun Maverick wasn’t good at all, it was magnificent! Probably the best sequel I’ve ever seen in my life. The story dialogue and emotional context of the film were simply exceptional.
i really liked it but it wasnt perfect. they could have done better with hangman's character and his redemption. i would have liked to see more dog fighting with the other characters. they never mention anything about maverick's relationship with charlie unless i missed it. a few more cameos would have been nice. shouldn't slider had been at iceman's funeral?
1:16 the flags on the back of the leather jacket were initially Japan and Taiwan flags. They were replaced for the trailer by the random symbols you see here due to pressure from PRC, but recently the studio decided the Chinese market isn't worth the censorship and placed the original flags back in the final release.
Iceman didn't have much screen time but emotionally a huge role He was abled to move on and progressed to the rank of admiral while maverick stayed in the same place So maverick moving on at the end is kind of a character arc
The analysis of this review/overview of the films are quite subjective with some of the storylines events. The proper way to do this is acknowledge your opinions of why this or that as they are not facts of the films. Maverick's objective in completing the training exercise was not to prove that he should be team leader. It was to show that it wasn't impossible and that loosening mission tolerances was wrong as it endangers the pilots to the point of writing it of as a suicide mission that will probably fail. The students made these arguments in the film. The byproduct of his feat was 1) no doubt Maverick still has what it takes to successfully complete the mission physically and mentally. 2) more importantly, Maverick proved that his students respected and trusted him entirely, therefore who best to be team leader and give the mission and the pilots the best chance of success and survival.
Agreed. I also saw this as a call back to Maverick in the first film after the accident where Viper tells him he has lost confidence. He needed to believe it was possible to fly safe to be able to fly at all.
I saw this movie last night and sent my son a text saying it is the greatest movie ever made. Don't believe me name another movie that got a 5 minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival! I would see again tonight but we have other reservations, but hey the weekend is almost here.
You know I feel like hangman isn’t iceman in this film. I feel like hangman is maverick. If anything, rooster is iceman; by the book, cautious, but a great pilot in his own right. Hangman is the cocky asshole with a chip on his shoulder. Always trying to prove he’s the best. Even got the backup role at mission time that maverick got in the first. Guess not even maverick would choose himself as a wingman.
@@traneofthought3 jon hamm "cyclone" was more like mike metcalf "viper" in the movie. i agree that rooster is closest to iceman. early in training rooster made a sacrifice for his wingman which cost him pushups. rooster's flying style, attitude and values was everything that ice was about. hangman was the new maverick but overly egotistical even more than maverick. those two were the new "rivals" and competed for team leader. the characters don't mirror exactly but there is some resemblance to the first movie's characters.
@@ianwparedes Viper liked Maverick from the beginning, and was a teacher. Cyclone hated Maverick from the beginning, and didn't come to respect him until the very end. Literally exact opposite characters.
@@traneofthought3 i wouldn't say he hated maverick just didnt approve of maverick's reputation of breaking the rules. viper didnt approve of it either. there are more similarities than just cyclone being in charge and lecturing about safety procedures. maverick got away with breaking some rules in the first movie because viper knew and respected his dad. in this movie, cyclone puts up with maverick because of iceman.
Did not believe it could be as good as the first Top Gun, but it sure was better then the first Top Gun. Top Gun Maverick was well balance! LOVE IT!! I did not know I wanted to watch Top Gun Maverick until I watched it!!
An excellent movie. The only gaffe IMO was the Tomahawks passing the jets. They travel at the same speed about 600 knots. Other military people noticed this i'm sure.
I noticed that and another thing that wasn't realistic is how the flares worked against the SAMs and AAMs. But still one of the best movies I have seen so far!
Paramount: "Dont screw with me, Maverick. Youre a hell of a follow up movie. Maybe TOO good. I got another problem here. I gotta send someone from this studio to Dolby Theater!"
11:55 I'm convinced the brilliant "It's time to let go" line also means "It's time to let Rooster go (on the mission, on his own, be his own man, etc.)".
I saw the movie today and I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end, I see why the movie got delayed two years and it was the right thing to do in my opinion, it was worth the wait. I wonder if more Top gun movies will be made?
I would love to see the next movie (if they decide to do it) where Rooster, Hangman, Phoenix, Bob, etc. are the main characters and Maverick is the Admiral or old friend in charge who can't fly anymore. I think this movie was for old fans, but also made it where new fans could jump in on this movie and enjoy the next one with the new kids as the main characters.
GIVE TOM CRUISE HIS FLOWERS WHILE HE IS STILL HERE. HE IS THE BEST OF THE BEST. THIS MOVIE WAS NOTHING SHORT OF SPECTACULAR. AND IT CAME OUT AT THE RIGHT TIME AMERICA NEEDED THIS. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR. PERIOD. TOOK ME THROUGH ALL EMOTIONS.
Haven't seen the film yet, but sure I will but I never ever thought Iceman was the "antagonist" or the bad guy. He was the perfect counterpart to Mavericks recklessness and ego.
I cannot fault the movie- stunning in all aspects. An added side benefit is that shows how truly amazing the US military is and I as a Brit (with an American son) am thankful for that.
Really hope the UHD Blu Ray has a good HDR grade and Atmos track, would make a really really good buy and something I could see selling well for the physical buyers
Here's something interesting... Had the trailers not shown the F-14, I would have thought that Maverick died when his jet was hit by the SAM. Being that we hadn't seen the Tomcat yet, I knew he survived. And it was also predictable that Rooster would be his RIO when he also got shot down after saving Maverick from the Mi-24. Knowing this, I was still very happy to see Goose's son be Maverick's RIO for a short time. It was perfect.
Initially I also thought that Hangman was this movie's Iceman character, but on further thought, he is a younger version of Mav: the cocky talented loner who doesn't stick with his wingman, but who comes in at the end to save the day.
The giveaway as to who the enemy is comes with the F-14s at the blown up airfield with reference to the F-14s that the US sold to Iran back in the 70’s…
I have watched this movie about 12 times and I loved it, but still cannot understand the part when Rooster and Maverick were in their last dogfight with the plane Hangman shot down, Maverick kept saying to Rooster Eject, Eject but Rooster said it wasn't working, what if the ejection pulls had been working, neither of them had a parachute because they were both shot down earlier in the film were they supposed to eject and fall thousands of feet into the sea without parachutes.
I don’t understand what needs to be explained? Seemed pretty straightforward to me. What should be talked about is Tom Cruise refusing to release this movie during “COVID”. Pure genius!
Maverick made a promise to Carole that he would not let him fly and he tried to keep that promise. From Rooster's pov I can understand why he would be mad at him but Maverick did the right thing but probably not in the best way. Anyway this movie was phenomenal and one of the best sequels I have ever seen
In the film, Maverick explained that He didn't tell Rooster the truth to why he pulled papers and set him back was because he didn't want Rooster to have ill feelings about his mother. Maverick did what he thought was best to honor Carole's wishes AND give Rooster more time to "let go". This was a very fatherly thing for Maverick to do. For me that shows Maverick being wiser and placing more value to how his actions affect others... he will never leave his wingman ever again. He also proves this point when keeping his promise to Penny that he will not leave her again.
@@UrbanWoodsman87 It was an immature fatherly move, I understand wanting to follow a mother’s wishes but you don’t do it this way. The proper way to announce things like this would be to actually step in and take care of the child and be more of a father figure than just withdrawing someone’s papers from the naval academy. The reason Carole didn’t want her son to go into aviation was so the same thing that happened to her husband wouldn’t happen to her son and she asked Mav to be the father figure Bradley never had.
@@nicoleskorupsky1007 If you saw the movie Maverick said Rooster was not ready to become a pilot as he was still dealing with the loss of his father. That's a solid parenting move. Always looking out for the safety and mental and emotional well being of your children. Rooster's struggle to move on and "let go" was all too familiar to Maverick's loss of his father and his own struggle to "let go".
@@nicoleskorupsky1007 Maverick didn't want Rooster to resent Carole for not wanting him to fly. She passed away before Rooster and her could have talked about the situation, so Maverick honored her wishes while also taking the full heat for it. He wants Rooster to be upset with him, not his mom. But in the end, Maverick made up for the years Rooster lost by bringing him with him, but by doing so he is also going against Carole's wishes. This is why Maverick had a side mission mentally the whole time to keep Rooster alive. And Maverick will never mention to Rooster what his mom wanted, because he knows Goose wouldn't have it any other way than see his son follow in his footsteps. So yes Maverick was literally stepping in and protecting Rooster through the whole thing.
And this could never happen. A person’s appointment to the Naval Academy, is not decided by active duty officers. It is decided by a letter of recommendation from an active senator. Maverick would have no say in this matter
Look, Iceman was not THAT antagonistic. If you watch the original, yes he seems cocky but you realize he knows what he's doing and questions Maverick in a legit way. He's the only one that tells Maverick he's sorry about Goose. One of the things that's so great about the original is you have these rivalries yet its clear everyone is on the same team and it never gets toxic. I'm just so happy how the sequel handled the relationships in such a beautiful way.
Spot on, the older that I’ve gotten I’ve realized that Iceman wasn’t bad at all in the first. He was all about the Team, Safety, and doing things by the book. Maverick needed to hear some hard truth and Iceman gave it to him.
I like Iceman more than Maverick when watching Top Gun because he was right about Maverick He puts the team at risk while Iceman was being skillful by the books And Top Gun 2 we have that duo again Hangman is a cockier Maverick Rooster is a pilot that goes by the books and a good team player just like Iceman but does not have the skills like his and always kept overthinking things Phoenix was a mix of both in a good way Skills not bad and also a team player
And not to mention Ice and Mav were in the same training when Goose died. Took after I watched this one, came home and watched Top Gun, that I realized that.
Man, I haven't walked out of a movie this entertained and honestly emotional as well. Like many I've probably watched the original a hundred times over the years and know every scene. The homage to the original, references, nuances like the silver Porsche aged about the same from current day as the one in tthe first movie, was just awesome. I honestly shed a tear the first time you hear "talk to me Goose". Wasn't expecting this movie to be so solid. Best movie of the Summer so far.
Best movie I have seen in years - and there have been a lot of great films. This one just has everything form the action to the story to the emotion. It's amazing.
Love him or hate him, nobody can deny that Tom Cruise is an amazing actor who goes above and beyond for his roles. Most actors would have been fine with green screen and a built set with a gyro cockpit, but to subject his fellow cast to real aircraft, real flying and real bodily stress of G forces so they can portray their parts more realistically... It's absolutely awesome. I went into the movie with moderate expectations, I came out extremely pleased.
Completely Agree . Tom Cruise is a strange fellow in his Personal Life , BUT , He is a VERY committed and Talented Actor , known for doing his OWN stunts as much as possible . Very much " The Real Deal " .
💯!! Never thought I’d be as pumped as when leaving the theater back in 1986!! (as a then-rare female veteran Avionics Nav Radar specialist, had just finished my tour of duty on fighter jets…was jumping outta my theater seat as jets launched off the carrier decks as the movie started!! Was adrenalin head-to-toe, making me wonder if I should have stayed in!! Now our daughter serves…🇺🇸💙😎)
I love when Rooster say “talk to me dad” like when Maverick says “talk to me Goose” and Maverick answers. I know he’s not Roosters dad but he has been a fatherly figure in his life until they had a falling out. I loved this movie and they did it so well.
@@ashleydayton1521 he is his own, while he emulates his dad in looks and some of the stuff he does.. he is hesitant to take risks and holds back. He is cautious too cautious when it comes to doing what he has to do. “Don’t think just do” he finally learns later on.
Nah I thought it to be cheap... he was so young to know what his dad what do nor say...it was never shown in original that Goose shared stories with his son, the boy looked like a baby sitting on piano.. he should have said talk to me mom or maverick. Then the confrontation scene between mav and roster was like a b grade film due to lack of story context and back story lacking explaining the pulling of papers and what rooster was doing in younger years to are mav feel the need the need to pull papers.
The scene where Maverick demonstrated alone that the mission was possible in 2 minutes 30 seconds was indescribable. Every grunt, groan and vapor trail was 100% real. I could hardly believe what I was watching!
Yeah. But why didn't he do it before they started training, to show the kids that it's doable and how it's done? And then trained the different sequences individually and solo first. That way he could weed out the pilots that can't tolerate the G forces, then seen who handles the canyon run best and check their dog fighting skills, and then choose who gets paired up and who is most likely to be able to pull it off. I mean, I can't fly, but with one thing Mav is absolutely right. He is not a teacher. His didactics are lousy.
I didn't think it would be possible to meet my expectations, let alone exceed them, but it damn well did. Absolutely fantastic. The perfect balance of nostalgia and suspense.
Not only did it have the right touch of nastalgia, but it also advanced Maverick's story so much! I don't think i could've asked for more except hoping Hollywood doesn't try to cash in with another sequel. Maverick deserves the happy ending he got here.
Well said. It was an incredible movie: Nostalgic but not sappy, funny in small doses, emotional when it needed to be, solid performances all around, Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise and pushing every boundary, and the most spectacular flight footage ever seen in a motion picture. It was just about a perfect film. For the first time in a long time, a movie not only exceeded the hype, it blew past it at Mach 5.
I love the fact that Rooster is like 60% maverick and 40% goose, he acts like maverick most of the time but when it gets dangerous he is safer like goose would be. I also love the part where Rooster says “do some of that pilot shit Mav” like goose did in the original.
If only Disney handled Luke Skywalker's character with the same respect and reverence as Tom Cruise and the production team handled Maverick's character in this film. This is how you do a sequel.
AMEN!!! They totally ruined a franchise that was a money-making machine. Mad respect to everyone involved in Top Gun: Maverick. Incredible follow-up to an all-time great classic! A movie that rebuffed woketards and is unapologetically pro-American and displays the patriotic warrior ethos. 👍👍
no one, I repeat, no one weaves a production the way Tom Cruise does hence the depth, beauty, nostalgia with Tom, we're in good hands. pity he's not in Jedi's production hence...what we got!
Well Disney had A W.O.K.E agenda to push. So the could give a shit about Luke skywalker or any of the original characters. They were just tools to be used and sacrificed. Unfortunately they underestimated the old fans. Since Tom Cruise was heavily involved in the creation and making of Maverick. He made sure that proper respect was given to the film and the character.
I was a little put out by three 5th generation fighters which can kill you from over the horizon being taken out at point blank range by old planes...Generally when one of those things shoot you down you dont know it until you explode.
Why do people keep bringing up CGI as a review point in almost every movie these days And your are fooling yourself if you think that CGI was not used in this movie It had plenty of green screen moments
Saw it last night. Liked it a lot. A good lesson on how a sequel can be executed with class, with a balance of nostalgia, new characters, and a concise storyline which makes sense.
I'm glad to hear this film is awesome. Heard that it was from god knows how many people. I figured it would suck just like all other sequels to awesome movies. I'll be watching this movie soon I guess.
When Top Gun, came out in the 80’s, I had just joined the Navy and was stationed on the Kitty Hawk. Watched the movie at Naval Air Station at North Island, San Diego. When I came out of the theater, I knew, I had made the right choice, by joining the Navy. Watched many hours of flight ops onboard Kitty Hawk, saw some stuff that sent chills up my back. Ended up doing twenty years, would gladly do it again. No regrets.
Easily the best movie of the year so far. Had a lot of heart and humility. The legendary character was handled well and the closing chapter for him was set up well even though the film made it seem they would end it a different way. The save at the end was great!!!
We can all thank Tom for fighting to ensure viewers got the best out of this sequel; by ensuring the flying was 100% real! Thank you Tom for being the Maverick of our Top Gun and for being such a dedicated and amazing actor!
Tom Cruise's performance in Top Gun Maverick is his best, where he's his most humble and likable character since Jerry Maguire. In Top Gun, Pete had mentioned he wanted to be an instructor. In this sequel, he definitely led by example and inspired his pilots.
It's a movie, he's an actor. Aboard the Theodore Roosevelt, filming scenes off San Diego, he treated the crew like something stuck to the bottom of his shoe. He even screamed at some sailors for looking at him as they passed each other along a narrow corridor aboard the carrier.
That’s a rumor that was never validated, just like all the talk about how kind and humble he was to everyone… none of us were there. I’ll tell you this, though, if behavior like that actually happened, it wouldn’t be contained to only 2 or 3 incidents. It would be constant, because nobody acts like that only a few times… once you’re brazen and risking hundreds of people seeing it (by the way, where’s the cell phone footage of it? Comeon, everything gets leaked these days…) you don’t just stop doing it. So far I’ve heard only sparse rumors. To be fair, if you read Artie Lange’s autobiography, he recounts Tom being a complete a-hole to him. But that’s one guy, 25 years ago, making this a whopping total of 2 rumors.
@@30AndHatingIt I was on a tanker refueling the Teddy during filming off San Diego. It was told to me by a Master Chief Petty Officer over station to Station sound powered phones. I got it straight from an unimpeachable source.
After years of lame remakes of classic movies, it was great to see such a good movie and one of the best sequels I have ever seen. Limited swearing and no gratuitous sex or nudity was a plus.
For the most part Iceman is living the pilot live he couldnt continue thru Maverick. That's why he is keeping him flying as long as he can. "Its time to let go" on the surface seems to be the advice Ic e gave Maverick but at the same time he is consciously or subconsciously telling himself its time to let go as he know his life is coming to an end due to the illness. "Who is a better pilot?" really tells the audience Ice has always been comparing himself to Maverick as a pilot even thought he left the job long time ago. I guess because of his poistion he would have all the top secret doc of Maverick's flying so he probably was studying them and thinking what he would have done in those situations if he was still flying. That brief conversation with Maverick was deep with few words. Loved it.
CDR Tom "Stinger" Jordan states to Maverick: Son, your ego is writing checks your body can't cash. You've been busted, you lost your qualifications as section leader three times, put in hack twice by me, with a history of high speed passes over five air control towers, and one admiral's daughter! Penny is the admiral's daughter, I thought that was a great touch.
Goose's wife also tells Charlie that Goose told her about that time he "went ballistic with Penny Benjamin" during that scene in the bar before they start singing "Great Balls of Fire".
Just saw the movie...wow! I was blown away. The story, characters, acting. Film footage. Couldn't have been better in my opinion. Maverick proves why he's the best. The scene with him and Ice is emotional. Their history and respect for each other is tremendous. Ice knew Maverick was the only who could make this mission happen. Maverick's talent and experience gets him the respect he deserves from his pilots and superiors. He's not afraid to push the boundaries when it's required even when his superiors try to contain him. He was the right guy for the job. Know one knew it better than Ice. Superb movie and story in every way!
My thoughts exactly , I cried a bit when I saw iceman and saw the scenes with goose. Movie didn’t disappoint at all. Only thing I have to say is FREAK YOU COVID!! 😆 it was worth the wait!
It’s BS. There are no top gun pilots over 25 because their reflexes aren’t the same. The movie was pure fantasy, talk to a pilot if you don’t believe me, I did.
@@blucolife Military pilots are college grads , so after 4 years of college they are 22 then 18 mos flight training on advanced jets . That gives them a year to be a Top Gun pilot . A mighty short career !
I joined the military because of Top Gun and Full Metal Jacket. Was my time in the military like the movies? No. But it inspired me and it brings back good memories and a time when I really loved being young and healthy and full of cockiness. Now I’m in my mid 40’s and married and gained some weight. Losing my hair. Getting gray hairs here and there. It felt good watching this movie. I feel for Maverick. Letting go of the past and settling down. I am no longer a youngster.
No, you are not. You have evolved from a youngster and are now an Oldie, a “Grandpa”, an Old Head.. Embrace it! Be a teacher of a philosopher.. tell your story to as many people as will listen starting with your own bloodline if you have any kids or even nieces and nephews. Mentor the lost and humble the quick learners. Some may reach their potential based on you sharing your ups and downs in life. Even those youngsters who are at the top of their game have not lived long enough to feel how hard that pavement is falling from such heights! We know that are not invincible because we’ve lived it, but they haven’t.
I have similar story, but I saw Top Gun with my girlfriend I met going to the MAPS station in Dallas, to get cleared to join the Air Force. So I had already decided to join the AF when I saw it. Lets just say, it didn't change my decision. :) Then, next year, my first date, with my future (still) wife, was Full Metal Jacket. Hell of a first date....... I wouldn't recommend it as such... lol.
Remember when Terminator 2 came out and totally outshined the first Terminator, but you'll still always love the first Terminator. Well Top Gun Maverick is exactly that to Top Gun.
There's VERY few sequels that are on the same level or surpass the original. Besides already mentioned I can only really think of The Empire Strikes Back and LOTR The Two Towers.
It was a great movie, I saw it last night with my fiance and stepson. My soon to be stepson, George is 12 years old and thinks Top Gun Maveric is the best movie he has ever seen. I smile, because when I was 12 in 1988, I too thought Top Gun was the greatest movie I had ever seen. In fact, I enlisted in the Navy from 1994-1998 because I loved Top Gun so much. :).
One of the best action sequels hands-down. On par with Terminator 2. The practical footage from the action/flight sequences are immersive, it makes you feel like you're actually there while watching it. And you can't accuse this movie of not being like the first movie... Overall, in the world of all-CGI movies, this one is a needed breath of fresh air that literally holds you on the edge of your seat many times, might also make you shed a tear or two. At first I thought Tom Cruise was just being greedy by delaying this film a couple years through Covid... after seeing it, I understand why he did it. This movie is the perfect example of what a modern movie experience should be in a theater.
The death of theaters, like fossil fuels, has been greatly exaggerated. Hanks probably wishes he had the clout to stop the surface Navy flick of his from going directly to (barf) "streaming".
@@kevinh5349 This movie is one of the few movies I've seen lately that 100% justifies why theaters should exist. No woke bullshit, no hidden messaging agenda, just an old-fashioned plot with the kind of visual/audio experience that unapologetically immerses itself around you and puts a smile on your face.
It was unrealistic, planes don’t do 180 to fly under a bridge. They also don’t bomb targets the way in the film, under and over a canyon, turning left and right. I prefer Terminator 2 and Robocop 2 because they’re fantasy movies, so I can just enjoy them. When Robocop shoots someone without looking at the target, I can laugh.
Tom Cruise putting the whole damn movie industry on his back. The Top Gun Maverick movie really good. You have to watch this in IMAX or Dolby Cinema for the full immersive experience. You really felt like you are back on the flight line or watching the jets launch of the CATS. The final 45 minutes are worth the price of an IMAX or Dolby ticket alone. Everything else is just a fucking bonus. Holy shit what a ride. Highly recommend. Had a great time with my Navy buddy. #topgunmaverick #navy
What a movie! I was blown away. The way they shot the flight scenes combined with Hans Zimmer score had me on the edge of my seat for the last 20 minutes. So glad for the feel good ending. I was so scared either Rooster or Maverick was gonna die. I couldn't have dealt with that. Lol.
I love what they did with ice man. They were able to say goodbye and show him love before he leaves us in real life. Made me cry cause what val is going through right now and he was able to see that
I really enjoyed this movie.. it was a real compliment as to just how difficult flying these jets really are for these men and women who do it to defend their country. A lovely blend of the old and the new in the storyline. I take my hat off to Tom Cruise. He has made many memorable action movies, doing most or many of his own stunts. Great to see Val Kilmer again...From NZ
It was very emotional watching the end when Maverick and Rooster returned to the carrier and Rooster finally let go of his wrong perception of the former.
I've dreaded Top Gun: Maverick since its announcement, fearing it would be garbage. Was amazed at how good a job they did. Perhaps not always grounded in reality but few movies ever are. Absolutely loved it.
@@thanakonpraepanich4284 I think it is a great way to pass the torch so to speak. We received a conclusion to Mavericks story in a way. Why not continue Top Gun with Rooster being the face of the franchise🤷🏾♂️. I think it would also be great to see Maverick in a command position having to make decisions differently from that of an Ace pilot. They’d be stupid not to take advantage of the fans they’ve accumulated from this film.
@@thanakonpraepanich4284 Yes I do. I don't think there will be a Top Gun 3 (thankfully) as Tom Cruise, brilliant as he is, has reached an age where such an effort is likely beyond him. A third Top Gun wouldn't be anywhere near as marketable with or without him - imagine the outcry if Vin Diesel or Denzel Washington (or anyone else) was cast as the lead actor in a third installment. What I really love about Top Gun 2 is that Maverick received a heroic send-off worthy of the character. I like heroes to have flaws, to be brash, borderline arrogant and even a tad selfish... but ultimately stand tall when it really matters.
Top Gun: Maverick was great & cinematic! It has some incredible shots & an awesome soundtrack. I cannot imagine all the hard work it took to shoot those flying scenes. Tom Cruise & the other actors were on a flying jet for real. Overall it’s superior than the original movie back in 1986.
No way it is. Too heavy on the CGI and a Mission Impossible esq third act. Two moments of foreshadowing involving Maverick's fate were not followed through to its logical conclusion which the filmmakers decided against. Deus Ex Machina in two instances involving Maverick/Rooster where they should have met another fate. The first film is more realistic and grounded.
@@peterp4223 The movie borrowed so much from Iron Eagle 2, Flight of the Intruder, Behind Enemy Lines, and Star Wars New Hope. This was a weak derivative of the first film. The US Military gave them free rein of F18s and they decide to superimpose them with a CGI F-14? What was wrong with just using the planes they had for real? The enemy planes were all CGI'd too. Why couldn't they paint over some planes and use them as enemy planes in the dog fight scenes? Then, you have implausible rescues of Maverick, which he was being bailed out twice by Rooster and Hangman, as Deus Ex Machina devices.
In a way, Maverick is like Star Trek’s Captain James T. Kirk- he isn’t beholden to rules; he is capable of thinking outside the box and bending the rules. He tries to do the right thing, but not necessarily what the rules and regs say. And, like Jim Kirk, Maverick remained a Captain far longer that usual- and Kirk was maneuvered into accepting a promotion as revealed in the novelization of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
I loved how it didn't look like Maverick and Rooster weren't going to make in the climax and how they were saved at the last second by Hangman. The final scenes were emotional in the best way. Seeing Maverick and Penny flying together into the sunset in the P-51 with Lady Gaga's Hold My Hand playing was the perfect final scene. It may be one of the best endings to a movie ever.
In my humble opinion, I don't believe Tom Cruise gets the credit that he deserves for being a great actor. He's often associated with his roles in action films, but he is a phenomenal dramatic actor as well. Just think of his prior movies like "Born on the Fourth of July", "Jerry Maguire", and "A Few Good Men". Those were not action films. In "Top Gun: Maverick", Cruise combined an emotional depth to the film along with the tremendous action sequences where he was in the actual cockpit of the F-18. The Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role has traditionally been given to those who portrayed a character in a unique emotional way. Think of Tom Hanks in "Philadelphia" or Adrien Brody in "The Pianist". However, more recently, Leonardo DiCaprio won the Academy Award for Best Actor in "The Revenant" not only for the emotional depth that he provided to the role but for the grueling physical toll that he put himself in while performing in the role. The same can be said here for Tom Cruise. He brought an emotional depth to the film and put himself in the cockpit of the F-18 as well and subjected himself to those G-forces while still acting at the same time. There aren't too many actors that can do that. For these reasons alone, Cruise should get a Best Actor Nomination for this role.
I totally love the first film and just as equally love THIS one! I’m so glad they stayed true with the opening! The radio chatter, flight deck crew on top of their game, the engine throttle and the final send off They call it Controlled Chaos! Maverick, you are STILL the BEST! ❤️ 🛩😎
I was fresh out of Marine Corps boot camp when I saw the original. It was great then and this movie did not disappoint. Lots of great memories flooded my mind while watching this film. Hats off to all involved in its making.
TG:M was far less about Navy jets than it is about relationships, regrets, and the ability to grow, heal, and forgive. I adored the idea that Pete and Tom grew and stayed very close friends over 3 decades. It is easy to imagine that soon after the close of the first movie, Tom "Iceman" Kazansky got to know Pete "Maverick" Mitchell's past history. That understanding plus the shared experience of fighting for one another forged a brotherhood that military members know quite well. Great review here Looper. Thank you.
Love that scene in the beginning where after he crashes his test plane he walks into that diner, no one knows where he came from and is dressed like a spaceman or something and maverick goes "where am I?"and that kid looks directly at him and goes " Earth".. That scene cracked me up I was laughing my @$$ off.
The scene between Mav and Ice was awesome especially when you know Val Kilmer was not acting and his voice really is like that and he cant really speak anymore after he recovered from cancer and the emotion that Tom Cruise had was genuine for another human and his friend in real life rather than just as characters in a movie.
