I just saw the English beat at the culture room in Fort Lauderdale Florida. They were absolutely amazing. Surprisingly they actually hung out inside and outside of the venue with all of us just hanging out chilling. Dave is so cool signing autographs outside on the bus. Can't wait to see them again
There is just something about music from the 80's, the best stand out bands, one hit wonders, the clothes and outrageous hair do's, there will never be another era like it,so lucky to have lived it.........
Nice "tip of the hat" to Pearl Jam with "Better Man" lyrics! Great song and I love how "The Beat" and "PJ" continue to acknowledge eachother! Should do a show together someday!
I agree, would be pretty wild, but not sure if Eddie would remember the lyrics to any songs played, pretty sure he'd be too blown away at being on the same stage as Wakeling at the same time. lol
Last nite...epic. Paroxysms of joy...Save It For Later was like 7 minutes of bliss. Tears, Ranking Full Stop, I Confess, Tenderness, Stand Down, Mirror, Twist, Doors...Dave was in fine form and his band was very strong. King Schascha (sp) was great as toaster. Oh, and The Skatalites opened. Well done, Duval.

THE BEAT where an extraordinary band, from birmingham(apart from the lead guitarist from isle of wight) i remember them well at all the venues around the midlands in the early days, before they hit the TOP OF THE POPS hosted by a midlands DJ, who praised them.dave wakeling has talent, which is far underated, it's a bit of a mystery that they didn't hit the highest spot of appreciation by the masses.
The English Beat predate MAW by a couple of years. Definitely not a clone - The Beat, The Specials and also Selector were major label groups that popularized the revived ska sound of the punk era.
Pearl Jam throws in Save it for Later sometimes when they play Better Man, it's worth a listen. It's great. 5/3/03 State College Pennsylvania is a great 10 minute one. Cheers
Pearl Jam play bits of this song in a song called BETTERMAN live....and Dave sings some part of that Pearl Jam song here....both bands have been nodding to each other for a few years now.
I dont think anyone is thinking this is a Pearl Jam song at all(myself included)...they are referring to the Betterman coda, an OBVIOUS nod of the hat to PJ who do the same thing
You can bet Pearl Jam members were blown away by this. Seems like the Beats way of winking back at them for cleverly slipping part of this song into Betterman.
Why are these guys covering a Britney Spears tune? .... Just kidding. English Beat are great. Caught them live a few years ago in Cranford or Westfield. One of my favorite shows was when guys from this band toured as the Special Beats with the Specials.
Glad he wrote this song and great drive song, but Pete Towsend’s cover of this on his acoustic guitar is truly a song that transcends mere performance.

you just dont get it, do you?? see my "nappies" comment - why would the Beat OBVIOUSLY nod their hat to a group who perform a cover of their song so many years later? They did this song before PJ even existed, sonny, there is no hat nodding here. repeat after me " it Is NOT a Pearl Jam song, it is a Beat original that Pearl Jam shamelessly sampled - but you just can't admit that, can you, fanboy?
lol, I'm sure that Wakeling was flattered to have Vedder ask permission to use part of this song in Pearl Jams 'Betterman'. Wakeling doesn't think of himself as above anyone else, one of the things that I've always appreciated about him. As far as I can see it, it is a 'You're welcome' to Pearl Jams 'Thank you for letting us use part of your song to make ours a hit'
@@Stinkbug74 more likely there is some contractual obligation for Pearl Jam to name Save It For Later when they play Betterman so Dave gets paid for writing the music. Betterman is at least 50% Dave's work.
