After I took all the papers out of Agnes's quilt I made the quilt sandwich ready for the next stage, the hand quilting. In this video I talk about my backing choices, what I used for the borders and the wadding (batting)
I get my wadding from Doughty's here in the UK. I really like the mix of cotton and bamboo.

Have always wanted to do hand quilting. My Grandmother (Appalachian Mountains in the 100 y/o home where my Mother grew up) taught me to use paper pieces to cut then piece her quilts (the same pattern you’ve made and wedding ring, her 2 favorites), but I was too young to manage a project on my own (my Mom was never interested). When we visited the home place, Granny had hand stitched quilts on every feather bed in the house. None of those are mine, but I have a lovely hand stitched quilt she made for my “wedding quilt”, a tradition in her family. I was the youngest granddaughter of a very large group of granddaughters, and I have one of her last quilts. I smile with such joy whenever I see, use or recall one of the pieces that either of my grandmothers made. This long “over shared” tale is meant to tell you how much your granddaughter will appreciate this lovely, colorful quilt, and the other projects that will remain in her life… like doll clothes used to teach dressmaking… swatches of knitting & crochet to teach those skills… and more. Even if the actual projects are used and used until they are no more, your channel will provide a legacy of love for your family, for your art, and for all things beautiful inside and outside your home. What a wonderful lifetime gift. And thank you for sharing with all of us, as well.

My first ever quilt, which I made last year over 12 weeks, was completely done by hand. I actually hate using a sewing machine, they scare me. Anyway, I cut up all the business shirts my husband doesn’t wear anymore, and made a single bed patchwork quilt. I didn’t watch any videos before I made it, I kind of just did what I thought would work. I have started my next one, I embroidered 12 white panels with just red cotton, different designs I drew myself and now I have to decide which pattern to use for the sandwich stitching.

So looking forward to seeing you hand quilt. It's something that I've often thought about trying but was never confident enough. Are you going to hand stitch the border on too? I'm assuming that you didn't hand stitch the widths of backing material together. Now that would be impressive :) I think of you as my "soul sister" - someone who loves fabric, thread, and yarn crafts, and who adores cats. Love from Australia.

I wanted to tell you about an American, award winning quilt artist named Suzanne Marshall. You must check her out. The reason for the research, she doesn't use any hoop or quilting frame to quilt her quilts. She basted extensively and quilt on her lap! I've done this approach and it's a game changer. Primarily, you can go anywhere to quilt. Check her out, you'll be glad you did😄💖

Wonderful tips and ideas Katy. I learn so much from you. Something I sometimes do when I make quilts, is to recover an old quilt. I take off the fabric and then use the old batting. sometimes I have had to add on pieces to the center if it's too warn or has holes in it.basting other pieces from the batting from other old comforters that have been taken apart. I cut pieces to fit and loosly baste them on before I make my quilt sandwich or as we say here in America, put the quilt up on the frames. I use a very old fashioned way of doing this, as I am largely without funds. Which is 4 small saw horses and four 8 ft long 1 by 2 or 3 pine boards purchased from a hardware store. These I sand down, so There aren't any splinters. I use c clamps and quilting tacks. It takes a couple of hours to put on, adjust and get taut . My sister comes to help. I do like my old grandmother did and make the tops in the winter and in the summer put them up outside under the shade trees and quilt them. Covering them with a waterproof tarp when I go in. I baste the outside first and then either tie or quilt the top, depending on the design. This works well. I get my fabric from old cotton clothes and thrift shops and yard sales and I enjoy it very much. But it's hard to find ladies to come and help. Most women in my area are intimidated to do such things. Fortunately my sister comes and helps and we have a good chat while we work.Laughing about good times, crying about all our troubles so forth. It is a lot of fun, really. But very time consuming. I have found your tips very helpful and appreciate them very much. I love the way your quilt is turning out. It's absolutely beautiful. I love your choice of fabric and batting. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

@@AnitaSouthall I have that problem too, especially in rainy weather, and it's pretty tricky, at such times. I think the ideas on this video are some good ones and I'm going to give them a try. But it's pretty well, impossible to do a queen size quilt with out putting them up on frames. It's just so large and bulky.

Beautiful quilt! I love Kaffe Fasset. A pillowcase,or two, made from your “extra” fabric might be nice for Agnes. Thank you for sharing Kate!

I purchased a hexagon paper punch after seeing how Kate did hers. I figure it will take me a while just to putter at making the hexies, so I've made a start at it. I love the washes of colour in her quilt, so I plan to copy that in pinks and mauves and such.
