Lol, I kinda don't like how he brushed over that IH said that he didn't realise he was lying, most of the 'promises' were the fault of the news, and he couldn't do anything to calm the hype.
No, he did lie is ass off in interviews. While they stuck with the game and fixed many issues, that doesn't change the lies in their trailers to the lies Sean told in interviews and then going dark with not even an apology and then coming back with another non apology blaming everyone else except himself for his shit interviews.
Since the Internet Historian video was created, the Hello Games team has added the next yearly update called "Origins". As well as "Living Ship", "Exo Mech", "Desolation", "Companions" updates, a few bite-sized ones "Bytebeat", "Halloween Update", as well as a "Next Generation" update for PS5 and XSX, and crossplay for all platforms. Edit: And now the new "Expeditions", "Prisms", "Frontiers", "Sebtinel" and "Outlaws" updates as well.
Yeah I was actually kinda surprised when I found out that NMS was a continuously updated live service game and yet didn't have any further monetization other than the base price. No DLC, lootboxes, microtransactions, nothing. Even the game's premium cosmetic currency can only be earned by playing missions, you can't buy it with IRL money even if you wanted to.
The world needs more people like Sean. Just the willingness to make things right and to work hard for no reason other than to do the right thing. Just imagine if Bethesda took that route..... PS I just got my first living ship in NMS and I'm sooooooo proud of myself!
@@thesmuggest6680 It's also mostly being carried by shitty crossovers due to brands trying to get more attention from those same kids but it seems like that might also be dying since it doesn't seem to be boosting their recognition by much. The sooner that crap dies the sooner I can take a massive piss on it's grave.
I really feel for Sean and his team, specially because I have degrees in game design and programming and know how it can be when you're a small group trying to make a game. Also, how hard it is to talk in front of crowds or do interviews without getting flustered and your mind blanking on you. I'm just glad things turned around for them and no lives were lost during that really dark time they must have gone through. I even was inspired by IH's video to buy the game, and I'm enjoying it.
I do love watching your reaction at the turn around, seriously. And on that note I remember when Sean Murray found IH's video and also wanted no one to watch past the 45 minute mark because the fanfic made him cringe 🤣🤣
I love the reaction when they started fixing it. Hello Games Crashed and really crawled back and redeemed themselves. They did everything wrong to turn around and do it all right. But people seriously have to stop sending Death Threats because of a fucking game, seriously, get a life, it is a game.
@@FrostyMikhail How these man childs don't see that yes- it was part of the Dev team’s fault but the majority of it falls on them. They allowed themselves to be trick, they shut off all the skepticism themselves, they allowed themselves to be sucked in by the hype without rational thinking and when the game came out and it’s inevitably shit (or just not what they expected) they turned around and send death threats to the Dev and throwing tantrum are beyond my comprehension. 🙄
I couldn't agree more. Sure, they might've fucked up and whatnot, but it's NOT the end of the world, if a game is not up to par or different from how you imagined. Death threats is the lowest and must scummy thing you can do. Just plain stupid and despicable, not to mention childish....
Just remember, there was a time a Sniper in CoD was nerfed, and threats that were deemed credible enough to remove the guy whose decision it might have been to nerf it from his house. Including bombs being intercepted in the mail.
I think the thing is, Shawn never lied. To him, at the time, it was an actual thing, but he just didn’t know how bad the media and people would make it
Yeah that's the thing with game development... you'll have a set goal or idea involving rarely used tech and as a developer you will say you can do because in your mind it's possible, only months or years down the line realize it's not, or it needs much more time to work on then initially anticipated. And yeah, that's exactly what happened here. Game development isn't an easy job, that's why triple A studios can burn through millions of dollars and staff hundreds of people. Although I will say, quality has been lacking recently, but not as bad as during the lootbox/microtrans craze
Sean: "So we are hoping our new game will interest people that likes exploration." Sony: "What the peasant..." **smacks Sean** "...here is trying to say it will make COD look like a game for babies and it will totally ready in two weeks." Media: "There you have it, the game will cure cancer and herald a new era of world peace so pre-order now :D "
Probably not since he's said he won't be doing any more long videos like this on the main channel, sticking to three 15 minutes ones per month or something like that. I do wish he would though, that would be amazing.
Yeah that seems like a good topic for him. His Concordia video was pretty good too, and it was pretty recent so the next video probably won't be out for a while.
I just facepalm myself so hard when he said "and he still is a liar" after 5 minutes of explanation about how/why all facts calling him a liar are not exactly right
@silverfoxeater dude it's been 3 months, literally nobody cares about it anymore Also, who said anything about internet historian? It's just what I think about the guy Never said he was free of guilt
You have a small brain if 3 months is all it takes to not care about something anymore. Sean was a liar, especially the demo planet, lying about that was a key thing for me. Despite being able to go back and remedy a lot of previous errors, there were still things Sean lied about. Also nice diversion, this isn't about guilt, it's about lying, which Sean did knowingly or unknowingly.
I don't think Sean lied. Almost everything he said, they have put in the game. I think his screw up was him over estimating what he and his team can accomplish in their time frame. A few years seem like a lot of time, but its really not.
you don't think sean lied because of hindsight but on launch day, those are definitely lies. it's like a restaurant serving food on a newspaper and the manager tells you we will give out plates and eating utensils when we have enough money in the future.
@@farlonmuentes6004 Watch Internet Historian's video where he explains why calling him a liar is not exactly true, because you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Here's the way I see it: Sean did not lie, however, I assume you're going to be super technical about what lying means, so I'll say this, if he technically did lie, he didn't do it intentionally. Look, everything he said would be in the game he definitely thought was going to be in the game probably would have been if Sony didn't set their deadline so short. Sean was being honest and did want to include it in the game at release but Sony threw them under the bus by setting their deadline so short and preventing them from accomplishing them from including what they said they were going to include in the game in the first place.
Are you people stupid? The whole *point* of this video is to change your view on Sean by the end! Of course he kept calling him a liar that's what MOST people in the gaming community see him as until they watch this video🙄
@@Not-Batman The dude literally kept calling him a liar even AFTER Internet Historian explained why he's not a liar and that he did have good intentions but was in a tough spot where his hands were tied in terms of Sony's decision for when the game was going to be released. The only stupid one here, is YOU, yet you're calling other people stupid.
Dude, not going to lie, it was super frustrating to hear you talking over the video and ignoring what was going on so you could just say "He's lying, he's a liar, he lied!" Especially when you were talking over the part the was saying he might not have been lying, or at least intentionally lying. You just ignored an entire portion of the video!
dude, you were so stuck up on "lie, lie, lie!" even when they explained he didn't actually lie. He said things were in the game because either they were *at the time* or they were *actually planned to be in*. But he's not a PR guy. He doesn't understand that if you remove or cut something you had promised before (regardless of reason), then everyone will be outraged. That's not a lie. It's an unforeseen change that he most likely didn't have a choice to cut because of Sony's deadline.
Star Citizen is what we used to call Vaporware back in the day.. It's still in beta, they're selling more and more micro transactions to fund the never ending development cycle.. If it ever actually releases I'll be amazed, my feeling is we'll have actual star citizens before Star Citizen is released...
I doubt they ever release it. That will take the only defense the fanatics have for it - it not being finished that's why it's not perfect yet. Star Citizen is Eve Online + No Man's Sky + Elite Dangerous + something like Mass Effect and I highly doubt it can ever be achieved with how many features and desires the devs and players have for it. I think the devs were always afraid to release it because of the hype and fear that disappointed players will not buy ships. If they released it and it ended up being a worse Eve Online but with planet interaction, I doubt players would have stayed for long. Eve barely retains new players and lives because of its long history and player-shaped space during its 18 years. Star Citizen lacks all that and will require ton of commitment from players - that is, if it was ever planned to be released. It could have been a scam from the start.
@@133hardrock Part of me wants to call it a scam, but I think it started as a genuine effort to make a game that became overbloated with promised features and grew into the pay to win mess it is now once it became clear that they were raking in tons of money on small betas alone.
@@kira-dk2mx yeah, that's what I was mostly wondering too. Did it start as a genuine effort to make something great? If yes, it might seem like the devs gave up once they realized that delivering on all the features looks impossible and that the dream of the game brings in more money. Like, I'm genuinely curious at what point devs changed their attitude. Was it the money? Or was it the realization that the game in their heads is an impossible dream? Or was it both factors that made them change. Or maybe they still do believe that with all the extra money they make now, they'll be able to deliver the dream space game. Guess one day we'll find out
@@133hardrock It's probably a little mix of everything. They realized that they've locked themselves in an endless cycle of feature creep then noticed that the idea of the game is bringing in literal millions and decide to make it seem like they're seriously working on it when really they're just putting in the bare minimum to keep the project alive to avoid being accused of being a scam to run off with the money. It's a state of limbo they've managed to work into their favor. At least that's my theory.
@@133hardrock I mean they are still working extremely hard on it. I actively play the game, and of course its very buggy, etc. But still really fun once you get into it. The thing a lot of people don't understand, is that Star Citizen isn't supposed to be just like any other game. They want to make a full, extremely real and vast simulator. From what they have said, they are relatively close to finishing their first system and have begun production on the next one. And there will be 100. And after they finish this one, and get some of the backend technology they want, such as their server meshing and iCache system, then they say it will be relatively easy for them to produce system with pretty high detail. I mean it's not really a scam, because they never advertise you as "buying the game" you are pledging support to the development, and you just get to test the game and enjoy it while they make it.
Yeah Star citizen feels more like a religion than an actual game. True believers talk about this game and how great its going to be when it finally comes out, and that they already spent thousands of dollars on ships that may or may not be useful to them. I feel like im talking to a modern cultist, and i dunno if the game ever releases it just gonna disappoint sooo its probably just gunna stay in alpha forever.
The only thing I'd say Star Citizen does better than No Man's Sky is the ships. (Not flight locomotion, just how the player interacts with it. I hate how ships control in S.C.) Being able to fly around in a multi-person ship is pretty awesome - and it's something I hope NMS implements later.
Thousands? I think you forgot the 20k (!) SINGLE purchase MTX they have on offer. You vang even SEE it unless you already spent enough into the other purchases!
In their defense they had a lot of shit go down including the flood, then of course the company was on their ass to get it out on time, plus they were getting death threats over it. Respect to them for fixing it. He wasn't even lying. They bit off more than they could chew, thinking they could do it.
If you want more Internet Historian; he’s done dramatic readings of things such as My Immortal and Jeff the Killer but his new magnum opus imo is The Gentleman Pirate.
It sounds very after school special, but you're absolutely right that actions speak so much louder than words and it's commendable that they stuck around and did the right thing by getting back to work. Now No Man's Sky is one of my favorite games of all time. Very relaxing sandbox experience. Internet Historian hasn't made a video on Final Fantasy 14, but you should look into that game and their redemption story.
@@Cramblit It had some great ideas that I wish had been preserved, but the execution was absolutely abysmal. It's far better now than it ever was then.

internet historian: explains the guy only seems like a liar out of context you, just hearing the word liar: yeah he's still that dude, PLEASE pay attention, you make yourself look like a fool.
i disagree, these videos dont have to be looked at in 1 way, people can interpret in other ways if they wish , people misunderstanding or him not realizing people will take it things a promise because he said them in an interview years ago which is completely fair and something you have to understand before saying stuff on an interview, or he actually lied, who knows, its not like we can read his mind and intentions, thats why we discuss these things interpret it in many ways
Ok. Chicago Reacts... there is seriously something wrong with you. When I first saw this video by myself, it was immediately obvious that Sean was NOT a liar (at least not beyond what is expected of normal people). YOU...YOU kept insisting Sean was a liar. Multiple multiple times it was explained in explicit detail how the truth of "No Man's Sky" was far more complicated than some random developer lying for a quick buck. Internet Historian told you outright that at the time, Hello Games thought they could pull everything off, but the Sony deal, plus lack of time, plus interview talk, plus realities of journalism, plus $60 price tag, PLUS the fact that Sean was literally forbidden from telling the truth (reeling back expectations) meant he was a victim of circumstance. Throughout this reaction you weren't listening to a thing being said. What was actually covered in the first half was the insane hype followed by painful reality, expectations followed by result; but you interpreted it all as lying initially and you never stopped to confirm and you never allowed yourself the time to gather more information. You were so busy being angry that you lost multiple opportunities to learn anything new. Hell! You were so hellbent on being angry that you (in a moment of arrogance) declared how rubbish it was that the video was called "The Engoodening of No Man's Sky." You hadn't finished watching the video and yet you ran your mouth as if you knew any better. Ate your words pretty hard didn't ya? I am deathly serious when I say this: Chicago Reacts...you are mentally ill. I am not trying to be a dick. I have extensive experience with human psychology and I'm telling you the hard truth. You get angry way too easy. You don't focus or listen to anything, especially when you get angry or fearful. You lack self-control, you lack focus, you lack self-awareness, you virtue signal like crazy, and you talk as if you're a God damned superhero of moral virtue who has more answers than he really does. If someone wanted to, they could manipulate you like a puppet on strings, and you'd be none the wiser. I say all this in the hopes that you see this and seriously confront whatever hidden pain has you knotted up so much. You talk as if you're a good man but you're not; no one is; and that's the whole point. You are selling yourself short, and you don't even realize it. In fairness though, watching you turn gleeful and exuberant after hearing about the Hello Games redemption arc was pretty awesome and heart-warming...
Oh yeah the multiplayer comment, he must have not realized they didn't add it in. Unless you think the way he worded it was completely copacetic, of course he lied but he made up for it.
The thing was he didn't exactly lie, I think you were speaking over this part so you didn't hear, but what happened was the stuff he was saying in the interviews was stuff Sean thought they would have when they game released, 2 years later. But they just needed more time than that, they couldn't fit all the promised features in that amount of time. And it shows, because now, the game has arguably even surpassed the original promised game. They just needed more time. But as Internet Historian said, they couldn't delay the game by that much since they were under Sony's funding now.
I don't want to be mean, but your reactions kinda felt like you already had watched this video, like you knew there was a twist and tried acting as arrogant as possible about Sean being a liar. It seemed even cartoonish at times. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought it was worth pointing out.
@@haleyl.248 tbf, it's a reaction. So many people complain that Reactors do nothing but sit glassy eyed, but then you also complain when they actually voice their thoughts. Don't like reactions? Just watch the original video.
I kinda felt that way but in the other video about Fall out 76 he acted similarly pissed though that one didnt have a positive twist. Did seem strange he didnt realize how long the vid was or that it had a positive twist though. Maybe he just had his mind made up that the No mans sky team were bad guys.
One thing everyone forgets is the Flood that destroyed the office of the Devs, after launch it was largely forgotten by everyone, but I think there's a very real chance some builds of the game were lost. or at least some PC's with build code were lost. Hence Sean very could very well have been mistaking features from old builds that got lost. EDIT; Yeah I know the video said there was no data lost, but I'm not fully convinced of that
I know this dude is just supposed to react to videos, but I'm always surprised at how people who have never worked on videogames before are so confident in saying "wow what a stupid decision" as if they have any idea what it takes to make or polish a game
because promising something that wasn't in a project that will profit off from people that will give out money doesn't need experience working on videogames. that idea is not exclusive to video games.

IH's video is what made me buy No Man's Sky after only being vaguely aware of it. Played it and Platinumed it since then, I love it, and the game only continues to get updated and improved.
The thing is...Sean Murray didn't intend to lie. He just made promises of features that he very much intended to add to the game by release, but he just didn't have the time in the end. Eventually the features were added. It wasn't a malicious kind of lie, it was just biting more than he could chew.
I actually think this is a really profound lesson for life. When you make a mistake - be it being found out in a lie or otherwise being found out doing something wrong - there's a right way and a wrong way to proceed. The instinctive reaction is try and cover it up or to get defensive. But those responses almost always make things worse. Instead, if you own up to your mistake and make a genuine effort to fix it as well as taking steps to ensure it won't be repeated, well people really appreciate it.
I guess I can see how someone who was disappointed by a game and it's developer and then catching him in some lies make that person believe the developer lies as soon as he opens the mouth. Sean learned his lesson though. Hope he can find redemption with you, too.
He didn't lie, he just didn't know (he should have) that people would take the development goals at face value and interpret them as features. He says things like "currently you can", he's a developer and development goals are always set higher than the final what product delivers on. He shouldn't have been speaking about them as if they were features, but it wasn't malicious and thus wasn't lying.
This is the classic tragedy of Icarus. Poor Sean got WAY too close to the sun and got roasted. Edit: Of course, Icarus didn't get back up after his fall. These guys actually did the smartest business thing that I've ever seen. Got back up and fixed their shit! I'm kind of proud of them for that.
What i hate the most is the fact that a community pushes the devs to release the game by sending death threats to the dev team and their families, the devs then release it due to pressure and then get outraged by an unfinished game
As I came here after watching IH video, I was holding myself for not start swearing as he start bad mouthing Sean as liar and all, since I know you'll be surprised on the second half. Seriously, Sean is my most respected game developer / leader as far as his dedication to the game. And I hope Projekt Red also can redeem themself too, one of the last good developers
Yeah exactly. A lot of people ignore this factor. Sean and the team did not set their release date, it was Sony, because they have all the control. The truth is Sean wasn't lying, everything he said would be in the game most likely would have been if Sony didn't set their deadline so short. It's sad.
IH videos are the only ones I don't skip through the ads lol and legitimately, this video is a 'feel-good' hit. It's constructed like a movie to show the rise, fall, and redemption of Hello Games, and you honestly get a great feeling by the end. I did, at least. I didn't play at launch, I jumped in just before Atlas Rises, and then compared to how the game is now (haven't played since the Expeditions update) it's been drastically overhauled and refined into a much better, albeit entirely different game from when I started.
Sean is like a M man who just got a hard cbt and when you thought that it's all end, somehow, he still rises up. Ngl, it takes some balls of steel to rise up as good as Sean did.
I feel Star Citizen is in a complicated state. Some hate it deeply some love it religiously. I do like the game for the way it looks and feels and how far it came but still can see many problems. There are many Bugs, Servers are small and missions (+ the reputation system) need to be improved to make the gameplay loops motivating in the long term perspective. But for a space simulator it is entertaining, for me and my friends at least. It can definitely be frustrating at times and it is far from a persistently pleasant experience. But it is in alpha still and it has its moments (sometimes it is just breathtakingly beautiful for example). We play the game every time a new update arrives to play around with. It just seems like the scope of this game is simply gigantic and that takes a long time taking small steps. My scepsis will be fully gone if the new persistent Server Cashing (ICash for those interested) comes this or next year. That would be something more of a more substantial step to a playable game than just new missions or a new ship. I have also played in the first Server wide collaborative event this year and I think I got small glimpse of the potential that the game has. Time will tell if the game will release to the promised extend. I feel, for what fun I got, my money was well spent. That’s where I think Star Citizen is, cheers
Sean is a sweetheart and fuck anyone who says otherwise, he was fucked over by Sony's predatory practices and he still worked for 4 years to finish the game he promised.
All the complaining at the start was so freaking worth it especially after he realized that he was going to get jebaited with the dev team proving themselves and him listening to erotica was so funny. Holy shit it was hard to listen to him repeating the stuff about lying and refusing to suspend his disbelief and listen to the video.
Was actually excited to see you react to this, but this has been by far the worst reaction video i've seen of you to date. You're so hung up on believing he's a liar you're not even paying attention to the video when presented with the facts.
It's hard because IH does tell the FULL story. The faulty production and becoming the heel with no sign of redemption (like many thought was the case). Then they took the hard path of fixing the game with no guarenteed increased income from it and fixed the game.
My experience playing this game lasted 14 hours. 12 of which were in the second system because the game bugged out and the warp cell i crafted didn't complete the quest which gives you the crafting recipe for the warp cells (fuel needed to FTL jump between systems so you don't take literal years flying). I spent the next 12 hours looping around planets in that system looking for the elusive location that would sell/give me the warp cell recipe. Millions and millions of credits, and like 20 inventory expansions later I found the warp cell recipe, made one, warped to a new system and then quit the game and went and played Astroneer instead. The planets were pretty, but 2 of the 5 in that system were literally indentical. I've come back from time to time, but the performance still isn't where I'd like it to be.
Everytime I see this video it makes me want to buy No Man's Sky... Considering how much fun i had with a free trial a while back, i might need to finally make good on that desire
They've added more than everything promised, and have added even more since.. Massive planetary generation updates. (Seriously the planets are insane). Weather overhauls, you can capture pets like pokemon. Underwater base building if you want. Walking mech suits you can drive. Procedural dungeons in terms of abandoned freighters you can explore with stories attached to them (stories are randomly generated as well). You can even hatch, and grow your own living alien ship... They even added the fabled Sand Worms, except made them 10x more awesome, because they aren't just massive worms, but they'll launch themselves hundreds of feet into the air and come crashing back down, and they are MAAAAASSSIIIVEEE There is literally no reason not to get No Man's Sky.
The irony here is people called him a liar but it was more what he could do and what he thought he can do. Resources and time are still on factor in game development you can’t blame it on someone who just says yes to everything. Just blame the people who say no like Bethesda and refunds.
I'm glad you guys did more internet historian videos, I have to say that I find your reactions and commentary the best in chicago react, I can sense that you actually try to understand and comment on the stuff that is happening in the video, keep the good work.
Around the time I got no man's sky for 1 dollar in a bin at gamestop was not too long before everyone started saying how the game got better. Lol. But I havent played too much of it. OH MY FUCKING GOD! it's so frustrating every time you keep calling him a liar nonstop, and even more, talk over his interview when he said it's a nightmare to speak publicly at E3
The good thing about being an indie studio. Had they worked for EA, EA would have just said "eff it" closed the studio and run off with the money. The most wholesome story in videogame history :)
