As an American, I can honestly say I know what "banter" is. It's the traditional blood and oats pudding boiled in a hogs bladder and consumd on Saint Andrew's Day before singing Robbie Burns famous poem "Auch! Me Olden Breeches aitch the crotche "...We all learn this as schoolchildren.

Romans wrote sarcasm on the walls of their latrines. Man walking down Roman street sees old friend and says, "I thought you were dead"? His friends says in response, "As you can see, I am not", the man then retorts, "Yes, but the man who said you were dead is more reliable than you".

Most of what I know of the enlightenment comes through a pretty serious study of Thomas Jefferson, which I'm finding is inadequate due to it being through the one lens. I noticed Freemasons got a mention, and as a US Freemason, I'm gathering that UK Masons are perhaps, just perhaps a slightly different animal based on Norman Pilcher's book, but I don't know how honest that book is. A very nice video which is well done.

That's called "saucer and blow" and was quite popular all over. It allows one to drink it fast by cooling it off. It wasn't allowed to sit dormant in the saucer. Americans started thinking it was annoying because of the slurping noise that accompanied the consumption and instituted bans at individual coffee houses and the practice faded... except in the southeast US where it continued.

Enlightenment philosophy and philosophical frameworks are not a threat to Christianity, but rather the use of Enlightenment frameworks in understandings theology. If you use Enlightenment frameworks to understand God or scripture you will completely misunderstand. David Hume correctly established you cannot deduce an “ought” from an “is”. Enlightenment philosophy investigates what is. Theology investigates how we ought to act in relation to one another. They are fundamentally different areas of analysis, though both sides continually fail in applying this distinction.

@@Mecha82 my statement is true. Looking at it from my perspective "they" the so called "great scholars" of the time were not " enlightened" to know that the enslavement of a group of people was wrong yet still keep them enslaved for your own selfish gain is not enlightenment. That's the problem people refuse to see the wrong in history and then try and hide the truth by making excuses for the past. I stand by what I said "THEY WERE NOT ENLIGHTENED"

@@jackiegillyard758 It pointless to argue with someone who chooses to be obtuse. All you heard was the part about slavery. What you seem to ignore is that prior to the "Age of Enlightenment " having any of these opinions would mean being ostracized and the very least, and executed in any of a number of horrific ways. Enlightenment does not come in huge leaps and bounds, it is incremental. Plenty of people like yourself had enlightened ideas. The question is, would you be so cavalier with speaking truth to power if you had seen other burned at the stake for the same? I bet youd keep your mouth shut.

You keep on saying the ‘State’ when talking about the Atlantic slave trade. It was in fact individuals and companies that ran the slave trade. Especially the British slave trade. Slavery was never legal in the modern state of England and Britain. Outlawed by William the first. Also, as a matter of fact, indentured workers Britain had similar, if not worse, conditions than the slaves that got to America. Of course slavery was an abomination but don’t blame Britain, blame individuals.
@andrewcarson5850
@andrewcarson5850 3 месяца назад
Britain was basically responsible for the destruction of the slave trade, since they owned the seas at the time, but this new guy knows very little about history.
@jackiegillyard758
@jackiegillyard758 3 месяца назад
I doubt indentured servants had it worse than actual slaves captured and forced from their homeland. Indentured servants chose to be employed by the people who "kept" them in order to pay for their land, or passage to a new country, etc. they were not forced to live in filth, their own waste, whipped or beaten into submission, locked in boxes, killed, raped or not allowed basic freedoms. In fact indentured servants were employed as overseers of those enslaved. And at some point they could leave freely whereas the only way a slave was freed was usually through death. Britain gained a lot of wealth through the enslavement of people from the continent of Africa and they gained a lot of wealth from the jewels of Africa i.e. "blood diamonds" which they refuse to return even to this day' so I seriously don't that indentured servants had it worse than enslaved people.
