“M&B With Fire and Sword” did something almost all video game developers have neglected up until today; they covered the pike and shot era of early modern warfare. It’s such a cool over-looked era, and they honestly did it justice
I’m currently playing fires of war(Greco-Persian war mod) and Gekokujo(Sengoku era Japan mod) on Warband and it’s still tons of fun even with no nostalgia or past experience playing the earlier games. Such a cool series with lots of great fanmade content behind it
Still can't believe that serve as soldier didn't make it into full release with native support. I am sure being a retainer was part of pretty much every Warband conversion.
First played the original Mount & Blade in 2008. People call it clunky now, but back then it was impressive and truly ground breaking. Kids just don't realize that in 10 years, whatever they are impressed with right now will be mocked by a newer generation.
My favourite overhaul for Warband was and still is Prophesy of Pendor. Nothing rivals it in my opinion. The new map, the lore, the companions and factions, not to mention all the new mechanics it had. It was simply the peak of Warband in my opinion. A relative close second is The last days of the third age. It's in my opinion not only one of the best Warband mods, but also one of the best Lord of the rings games that exist.
Honestly, Prophesy of Pendor is the best, but it lacks something essential, and that was the game's features taking so much time to shine. So to me the best mod right now is perisno or warsword conquest.
What a trip down memory lane, my gaming life developed with mount and blade so very fond of the whole series but what I’d give for one last siege hiding behind the walls before they where blown up and then defending the breach until the last man!
Your passion for this series is on display here in full. I have followed you and your coverage for a while ,this felt like your magnum opus video , bravo friend
super busy because of the release of bannerlord so saw your comment but only had time to heart it hence the late response. I really appriciate that, I think sometimes my love for the series gets lost in the content updates and mod reviews which at the end of the day I enjoy doing but they are mostly to help grow the channel etc, but every now and then want to do a super vid that probs wont bring it a new audience but gets to show off some of the bits I genuinly love about games etc. The next one should be on Rome total war aha
Between empires for warband is an amazing mod, I highly recommend it. It not only changes the time period and makes it Europe, but also adds so much to faction management, economy, trade, military management, diplomacy, and even adds to battles an RTS mode you can switch back and forth from FPS mode
I would love them to do their own large scale mods for bannerlords. Maybe even some franchise stuff. Like Game of Thrones, or Lord of Rings, i also want co-op campaign. it needs to happen.
It’s so satisfying riding a horse and swinging a sword around. And I think that really shows how good mount & blade is. It’s unique and no other game compares to the feel of it.
The first contact I had with mount and blade was on xbox, one day I saw it in the gamepass and I thought it looked a bit old but entertaining and my God that same day I started playing from 10 at night until 5 at early in the morning and I already had to go to work, from then until now I started looking for more games like this and bought all the games available on steam, it was totally worth it.
Absolute favorite was/is Prophecy of Pendor. A high difficulty low fantasy setting with rogue armies, knight orders, custom kingdom and orders, a hidden elven city in the woods and beautiful textures and models. The star wars mod was also something to be seen
Not gonna lie. Never have I been proud to be a part of a community as much as I am happy with Mount and Blade community. Incredibly proud of it, shitposters that are extremely friendly and helpful. Playing since the first days of Mount and Blade, waiting every day for the release of Bannerlord. I can say one thing and one thing only, its been an incredible journey....that is yet to end.
Mount and Blade serie definitely one of the most important part of my childhood. I loved every part of the serie but Napoleonic wars was the most important for me . I met with a lot of international people there, i made a lot of friends and i still i am talking to some of them to this day. Line battles were amazing. When i get into my first line battle event, my mind was blown up. A lot of people with huge effort and synchronously doing what they have to do and fighting for their own regiment. It was an amazing experience. Thanks to thousands of people that i've fought side by side or against for making my childhood much better.
I've followed Mount and Blade since 0.750/0.751, although as just a pup I wasn't able to buy the game until sometime a little after Warband came out. If I remember correctly the trial version(s?) was only limited by a level cap of like 5 or 10, but my little middle schooler heart certainly fit some adventures into countless very short, very similar adventures in the vicinity of the Free City of Zendar. Pretty sure Warband was legitimately the first purchase I made once I had access to the dangerous power of a debit card number. It's been so much fun to watch it grow over the years, I can't say I've played every version, but I've certainly enjoyed observing the rise, fall, and occasionally rise again of various mods in that span of time. And regardless of in-game fate, Zendar will always live free (And) rent-free in my heart.
Viking Conquest was soooo good! i did spend more time in there than with any other game of the series and i still wish bannerlord was more like VC. still don´t know why they took out the beheading, of course it´s not necessary but medival swords game do need some gore in my eyes.
The most significant difference between Warband and Bannerlord that has changed my playing style was the raiding of villages. In Warband, if you raided a village once, you were pretty much set for life. So, building an army to raise a village was my main source of income. I remember once I raided a village all by myself. As the villagers attacked I rode up to a short building and hoped on the roof, they surrounded me like zombies but couldn't come up and I picked them off with a pike one by one.
The Mount and Blade series is so much fun. I can't express how much joy these games have given me in the past auf l six years. Thanks for writing this "love letter" in visual form, resonant! Obviously, my favorites are With Fire and Sword, Bannerlord and Warband, but that does not mean I dislike the first title or the DLCs Viking Conquest and Napoleonic Wars.
the name mount&blade is derived from an old turkish saying "At, Avrat, Pusat" which literally translates to Mount(horse), Woman(wife) and Blade. 3 sacred objects to a nomad warrior, woman part would probably stir so much controversy in the west so they omitted it 😂😂
Most of what you said about tournaments in Bannerlord is also true for Warband. The only differences are: a prize item and clearly visible tournament tree, which made it clear when you can continue the tournament if you are knocked out (in Warband it was rng if you were last one to die)
In Warband it is more like a last chance: if you kill at least 1 enemy and having high enough renown, the game would give you 1 last chance to prove yourself. Of course, if you lost in the semi-final onwards then you are out completely.
@@nickgotvyak5890 you dont need to be the last one on the team tho. But the second chance is only available in the first 2 rounds, AND you need 100+ renown for it.
Floris was hands down my favorite mod for warband (I've played a lot of them as well) and actually I paused this video literally seconds before you started talking about mods (that damn music) went and downloaded warband and booted up the floris mod just for a nostalgia hit, I immediately opened up the in-game troop trees and thought to myself "yah that's the stuff!"......I recruited 7 mighty troops headed back to the town I started in as I received a message of a tourney being held there, was about to enter the town then got attacked by 12 dastardly t4 deserters that cleverly hid themselves under the sprite of the town that I did not notice until it was too late and thus the grand adventures of Gus and his band of mighty men came to a close as all things must.
This is one of my favorite series, the first to do what I wanted since the 80s... an immersive medieval simulator. Add to it the mod support that transform it to literally anything, it is one of the greatest series of all time which I can play even the oldest entry even today and have them all consistently installed
Thank you for this video. I am ‘new’ to this game and community. Only knew it since M&B2 Bannerlord. But i love the game. Already played over 3000hours it’s just amazing
When it came to Warband, Star Wars Conquest was my go-to. It feels bare bones in some regards, maybe due in part to available tools and the engine, yet there's always a joy to taking control of a galaxy with a new Droid army or defeating Vader on the battlefield.
my first M&B experience was trial version somewhere 0.8xx that you could play only for, i bet, an hour or so. Only Swadians and Vaegir and mysterious Black Khergit. There was also Samurai armor set hidden scattered around cities. From that time i was always up to date with development. Long way this game have gone trough to be what we got today in Bannerlord. Im do glad to watch it from these humble beginnings
I think I would absolutely love a modern bannerlord expansion reminiscent of with fire and sword set in (or based on) the early modern period. Imagine sieges against star forts, pike and shot, artillery pieces.
here to show appreciation both for a the effort put into this synopsis and that mount and blade managed to release. truly a special game if not perfect, looking forward to continuing to see Bannerlord grow over the next couple years.
Gekokujo was always one of my favorit mods and one of the first i played LOTR and roman overhaul was mods i came to love later but they also has a special place in my heart
My favorite Overhaul is easily Aut Caesar Aut Nihil. It was a Mod where you could rise from a Lowly Legionary in the Roman Legions and eventually rise up to the title of Roman Emperor. Along the way you could get Mythic Items like the Shield Aegis, Julius Caesar's Gladius, Thunder and Lighting (A Bow and a Arrow Set). And they made the Roman Empire it's self very unique by having 3 types of Vassals in the Roman Empire while also having a Government. Im telling you bro it's great and you should try it out.
Mount and blade has been my favorite game forever... im 32 and i remember playing M&b in 7th grade, i was like 14? 15? Playing bannerlord 2 on my xbox has been fun, but i cant wait to get a new graphics card to play it on PC. Xbox is not up to the task of even being able to complete a massive seige battle without crashing
If i had any experience with modding/coding then id 100% make a banner lord mod that gets rid of the map and most menus. Take full advantage of all those carefully made maps and town/village scenes. Would make battles more organic, it would make things like horses and stuff more important and also add in other environmental things/options that would flesh out the idea. Such as scouts, or "looting" a town is actually important. Spotting enemy/friendly armies is the only way you can identify where people are on the map. So its possible you can avoid a massive army simply because your walking through a forest or your between some hilly terrain. just loads of different stuff that would totally change the game.
Nice video! I've been playing M&B since version 0.731, and it's always a unique experience. However, in your discussion about modding, you missed an important detail: without mods, warband would have been much different. A user named Nijis came up with the fantastic mod titled "Battle for Sicily", back for version 0.751 - when M&B was still just Vaegirs and Swadians duking it out, and the occasional Black Knight. Battle for Sicily added villages, armies, raids, castle sieges, and an early system of diplomacy. It was a HUGE step forward, and Nijis himself was hired by TW, and became one of the lead writers and designers of the campaign aspect of the game, possibly stirring the franchise towards the semi-historical identity it has now. In more than one way, modding made the game what it is today. There was also the American couple that made a mod based on 1066 and began selling it, which was kind of illegal and caused a lot of drama on the forums, but I don't remember the details.
Also, the split with Paradox (another massive drama in the forums) was mostly due to PDX releasing War of the Roses, a direct competitor to M&B. This wasn't seen very favourably by the developers and the fanbase, and eventually led to TW going on its own.
I remember how I discovered mount and blade warband was on Xbox game pass I thought the graphics were bad and so did my friends but when I downloaded it the graphics didn’t matter about the graphics but the gameplay were amazing and I really enjoyed it
Just really wished to see some insight in the competitive warband community. While it definitely did not attract as many players as the singleplayer community, it is a huge part of the everyday warband player and it forever changed its participants lives, pushing the mechanics of this game to a level I have never seen while still relatively unkown to the outside mainstream community
I would look into Viking Conquest II. There are plenty of historical scenarios this engine would do a great job with, especially with overhead management. Thanks for making this. Thanks for cleaning up your language, some.
I've played the series since the OG mount and blade, and its been a great ride. The mod developers cant be denied their role in the series success, and props to TaleWorlds for fostering such a community rather than squashing it. Even to the point of hiring them to make those DLC! The journey is far from over, development on Bannerlord will continue to trickle in for years I'd imagine and maybe some stand alones, and then surely another entry into the series in another decade or two 😂
38:42 The map is bassed of the original map its still there its just been expanded the sequal's map is just the original but bigger you can find the resemblence its there.
I first found out about Mount and Blade Warband back in 2015 on RU-vid and was amazed by the gameplay! I had them dig into several series following the game and the mods associated with it such as Star Wars Conquest. I hadn’t been able to play it because I was on game consoles still, but once I found out that it was coming out on Xbox in later 2016, I quickly pre-ordered it counting down the days! After playing the original base game, I had the desire to learn how to play the mods hoping that it could be implemented onto Xboxes, but was saddened after months trying to find solutions only to accept the fact it couldn’t be done… I kept playing the game and watching the gameplay of my favorite mods trying to learn all about them that I could. It wasn’t until in 2020 when Covid happened and my time in the Marine Corps was in a weird state as I was in the Reserves and the military couldn’t have us showing up to base so we had to do training online, so I HAD TO get a PC! I got a PC from my dad that was from 2009 and it had just the basic capabilities to play some mods to the minimal settings that were super laggy, but it was all super slow… I still loved it! About a year ago (2022) I decided to buy a nice laptop on the market as I was finally making a decent bit after serving my time in the military and wanted to learn coding, though the game was more of the real why! Since then I have loved playing all the mods out there on the game both Warband and Bannerlord! Bannerlord has been pretty difficult having to customize each mod to be ordered properly, so I’ve taken a break, but I still love the Mount and Blade games and can’t wait for more mods to come out! I am currently loving Warsword Conquest the most on Warband and I am looking forward to LotR on Bannerlord hopefully in a year or two!!!! It surprises people to find out all I play is Mount and Blade anymore, but no other games interest me enough the way the missing community has on these games!! Also does anybody have any knowledge on how to access the Skyrim: Civil War mod? I know it got taken down due to copyright issues, but I hope someone out there hasn’t given up on getting ahold of it and found it!
The meat rot is what added to the suspense. I never had meat rot on bannerlord and never cared to look it up. But I'm assuming they removed it for some odd reason
People seem to forget that Warband is on console, and it actually has (had now since bannerlord released on console) a thriving community with clans that have been around for years.
I only brought the game for the Napoleonic mod and played that heaps in multiplayer. Only just brought banner lord 2, a decade later, and quite enjoying the campaign and native combat!
With Fire and Sword needs more recocnition. It's melee gameplay is far better than in Warband. I'm also pretty sure that siege servers had way more players online than native Warband. Napoleonic War servers one year later had bigger numbers
Game about medieval warfare that STILL does not have collision boggles my mind. A 100 Cataphracts at full gallop cant trample a single farmer with a hammer. Ohhhh how fun...
When i was playing M&B back in the day, my cousin was making fun of me about this game like "This game is garbage, why are you playing this shit", A few months later, he was playing the game day and night. He even conquered all of the calradia with his own kingdom. Mount and Blade deserved every penny i've given.
Well I finally got Bannerlord on it's release day. A bit hard to get behind, but definitely a fun game, when you understand what to do. But I really want to see a Mount and Blade in a Fantasy setting.
There are so many Fantasy Games from indie Titels to AAA games. But besides Kingdom Come Deliverance and M&B zero historical action/rpg/none strategy game. I'm very glad it's not in a fantasy setting!
@@Robin-sf3gk Whenever I see "historical accurate" games I just think they look absolutely boring. I simply do not like them, no matter how good these games might be. M&B might be "only Humans and no magic" but the world of it is fictional, which is why I'm playing it.
@@TurKlack Hm I don't mean historical accurate. Because it's barely existing expect some simulations. Some are historical oriented like most of the Total Wars but M&B is just historicaly inspired with a realistic setting. All of them are fine for me and I understand that people find it boring when they are not interested in history. But the Fantasy genre is so oversaturated. You can easily fill your Steam libary with hundreds of games from the last 5 years while for the historic genre you'll just get a view. Especially if you ignore the Paradox hardocre strategy. That's frustrating who likes such games.
1:25 "the prophecy talked about the arrival of the undead, but these things were taken off for more a historical approach, and I think that was for the best". Why am I hearing Game of Thrones theme in my head? Hmm...
Although you can not believe today 2023 continue to release mods for Warband some recommendations Perisno, Nova Aetas, Prophesy of Pendor, The last days of the third age, A clash of kings and even playing the multiplayer examples: Full Invation
Most played overhauls for me are probably Prophesy of Pendor and Awoiaf, L'aigle is another top one for me and for vanilla overhaul bannerpage is probably one of the best if you want a vanilla playthrough thats enhanced
wow you are the only person to shout out bannerpage here in the comment section. seems like a lot of m&b players was missing it... yes i agree it is the best enchance mod ever to make the vanilla (native) 1000 times better experience 🙌
I'll be honest with you I played the original game like 2 years ago I started playing it and I loved it played I didn't care about the graphics I love the game
To think warband is an expansion is insaaane like it's more like a version 2.0 or an actual full release where mb was just a open play test. But that could speak more to the attitude of video game expansions at the time compared to DLC of today
there was a mod form mb1 that was universally applicable to the game, and changed a few settings, stuff like prisoners per skill, talking directly to elders and other npc in settlement menus and lots of other tiny things, it was a massive quality of life change quite early, I think I found it on a forum back then, and it was upvoted like crazy but if you used other sites you might of never heard of it, it was ahead of it's time I suppose. I played mb1 without mods for a while, the main reason I didn't push up difficulty was the time it took in that way, I remember I had to travel to a different country for work, and I played mb1 for hours and hours last few days. 16 hours straight and my beard was growing out in a single day. my goal was to take out the norse, with my custom faction, and I had 3 cities left, siege them one by one all the time. they hired more and more civilians, and sieged back a castle each time I took 1 from them, and for 16 hours went along, in the end I still had a castle to siege down. fun times. probably the only other thing I played that much is football manager, different in a way, but similar in other things. ofc less active playing time, and more spectating. I really liked the other things in mb1, the fights got boring after a while. planning to pick up mb2 on a sale, just to try it out.
Is there not a tournament option in multiplayer? That seems like a good idea even if you can only have 50-100 players. I think the arenas are big enough for an infantry skirmish of that size. We could have massive unarmed brawls as well lol
Still remembering my old times in 92nd regiment when 80 players joined random server and suddenly random players stood in line and listened our commands. It was great times. Fuck i want be young again!
Are those insanely gorgeous helmets in vanilla? How come I don't see any playthrough how or when to get it? Come on, even if it's armour rating is 1, I'll wear it everywhere in Calradia like "Look at my cool helmet, pauper lords, LOOK AT IT!!!"
I thought the mods for Rome on bannerlord were pretty neat, some new units, map over haul and even ferries and and possibilities for navies, but that Star Wars one? Oh my god I have never been more sad to only own an Xbox.
