You have made the entrelac technique clearer than it has ever been for me. And, I appreciate your pointers to avoid the holes at the base of the work. Thank you, Norman!
Very happy to hear that. This tutorial took much longer to record than I anticipated. Probably because in my mind entrelac is so easy because I've been knitting it so often but it made me realize it's actually sort of not. And these holes have been bugging me personally for so long.
@@NimbleNeedles : Norman, in watching your videos, I am struck by how much time you put into making your videos clear and as concise as the topic can be. That’s one of the many reasons I anticipate your latest video, and reference your previous videos. And, I’m grateful that you care enough to do all this work for the benefit of the knitting public.

Hi Norman. I wish to humbly suggest a couple of tips that I just learned from sad experience. I have just finished undoing a sort of coverlet for which I had finished some 10 rows of squares from 12 bottom triangles. The first tip is: Carefully analyze and choose your colors and color sequence BEFORE YOU BEGIN. The second is: Do not blend your tail ends into your knitting BEFORE YOU FINISH. If you have to do some undoing, it will be hellish…. Now you know what happened - wrong colors, disappeared tail ends. 😕😵💫. Happy knitting!
Hi Norman. Fantastic tutorial! You reminded me that I watched a class on Entrelac knitting a few months ago and started a swatch. I’ll have to find it and do some more using your techniques! It amazes me how you take these issues that you are not happy with and figure out a way to make them look so much better! Thanks so much for all these wonderful tips! I would definitely like to see a tutorial on knitting Entrelac in the round! Thanks again! Have a wonderful week!😀
❤ ur tutorials. I know u spent HOURS on this pattern. It is very informative and have a future project planned. Ur channel is the best tutorial. Thanks for sharing.
Hello, I can't express enough how much I look forward to all of your videos! Each week I learn so much from you! I am going to give this a try. Your leg warmers are exquisite!! Thank you for all your hard work you put into making these wonderful tutorials!
very happy to hear that my hard work is appreciated. It does in take very long to knit all the swatches, etc but if I can help all of you guys with it, it's all worth it!
You are a truly amazing knitter, Norman, I really admire your demand for precision and your devotion to find out the best solution. And even more, to share it then with us. Thank you so much, I really appreciate your work and am a grateful student. Greetings form Czech Republic. ❤
Thank you! I watched this awhile back as I began my first entrelac attempts and it was helpful. But coming back to it now, having knitted quite a few tiers of entrelac -- it makes so much more sense, and you addressed nearly every one of the quirky little things I wished looked better.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have only been knitting for a year. ( I started after a surgery that had me down for 6 weeks). I have enjoyed learning to knit by using RU-vid tutorials. Except I always felt like I was missing something that could make knitting more natural and relaxed. Then I found you a few weeks ago and everything clicked. From the way to hold the needles to knitting continental. It all felt right. So thank you. Now I found a pattern that i would love to try and it is all entrelac . I turned to your channel and BAM there it was. A complete and total tutorial on the subject. Well made, clear and concise. Thank you for taking so much time to explain to those of us still learning how and why we knit certain ways. I feel confident now to start this project. And I look forward to more tutorials.
Hooray, I've been wanting to learn this for a long time! Your tutorials are always so clear and easy to understand, I'm sure I'll be able to do it this time. Time to make a cup of tea and get into the video! Let's do this!!
@@NimbleNeedles well, believe it or not I had to adopt a technique I've been using for a long time for other projects. I simply reverse the left and right triangles. Left is right and right is left. Lol, I also knit continental!
Get the written entrelac pattern here: nimble-needles.com/tutorials/how-to-do-entrelac-knitting/ And don't hesitate to ask your questions here in the comments. Errata: the written instructions for the right leaning triangle at around 19:00 have a typo. It should be p3,p2tog, etc. It says k3 on the screen.
Note to self never watch a knitting video while your knitting a shawl with lots of short rows lol. Once I paid attention it was so simple the way you taught it.
Norman! Your videos are so helpful. Not just your expertise and very patient and clear instruction style, but the quality of the video showing all of it so beautifully clearly. And I do appreciate all the experience you bring in perfecting techniques for patterns, I know I’m learning the correct way to do these things from the ground up. Even my fumbling fingers can replicate what you’re doing, you make it so clear & look easy. I made a flat panel sweater on straight needles 25 years ago, and want to get back into it again now I have more time. In my enthusiasm, I wanted to learn how to knit in the round, do double-knitting, and fell in love with your version of entrelac (those legwarmers are gorgeous). So I’m knitting a 2 color reversible hat with an entrelac band, and probably just solid reversible colors the rest of the hat, and it’s working! My tiny test band is taking forever and has terrible tension issues all over, but that’s my own lack of muscle memory - the stitches I’m making are correct thanks to you and the reversible pattern is beginning to really show. Amazing, thank you, thank you!
Norman is one of my favorite people to watch when I need reminders, tips and tricks in knitting! You are so knowledgeable and your techniques work so well, thank you for posting such wonderful content!
Thank you for such great close ups and going slow as you explain what you are doing. I am a beginner knitter and this helps so much to understand the process.
Thank you, Norman, for this great tutorial! It is clear and just the right pace. The tips and tricks are especially helpful and you are a true professional with the curiosity and perfectionism to get it exactly right!
I had a basic understanding of entrelac, and I thank you for this video, because it inspired me to experiment and create (your videos tend to do that in my case). My first attempt at this happened during the lock-down last year, and was only in one color, with large needles (5mm) and worsted weight yarn; it looked something like a doormat, because it was very thick, the fabric had no drape at all, and the swatch was ridiculously large (it was a 12" square), but I learned how to do this. Now I'm thinking about lighter yarns, smaller needles, and drop-shoulder sweaters. I'm not a fan of drop-shoulders, but the thought of working out a pattern for set-in sleeves doesn't appeal to me AT ALL using this technique. I found your video to be quite entertaining as well. Keep up the good work, mein Freund!
I enjoy the way you explain things and love your tips and tricks. You really clarify things so well. I can't wait to use this technique after I finish the pairs of socks I've got on my needles and the afghan on my hook.... I'll get to this before next winter I'm sure.
What a lovely video! I have always thought entrelac a bit sloppy looking but your information changes that. I would love to see the entrelac in the round. Thank you so much for the video!
same here...it's almost always my first impression when I see entrelac..sloppy. lol. But it can be a very lovely pattern if you pick the right yarn and project. And will work on that in the round video :)
Thank you so much. Was looking for a tutorial for this and I have tried several, but yours was so easy to follow, so I thank you very much. Yes, I was knitting along, and even though I had 8 stitches to your 5, it went really fine !
Norman I can’t stop watching your tutorial so very meticulous and perfect. I am so glad to have found you! As always thanks for sharing your knowledge ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Your trick for closing up the cast on "holes" is brilliant!! I've always hated them. I make entrelac hats starting with a 2x1 ribbing that I then "cuff" to make a very cushy brim. Then I start the entrelac and the holes have always stuck out like a sore thumb. This technique produces the smooth transition from brim to "hat proper" that I've longed for. Thank you so very much!!!
I'm forever grateful for how generously you share your knowledge and techniques. If I may be so bold, PLEASE do a video on entrelac in the round! Thank you from a new subscriber!
I love you technique on the interlac. I love how you troubleshoot to make the over all look have a crisp clean look. Love it. I'm going to try these steps.
I am going to knit a cowl for my first project and I would love to see a tutorial on entrelac in the round. I looked on RU-vid page and did not see one. I apologize if I missed it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
I tried an entrelac pattern many years ago but gave up because it was too confusing. You make it look so easy and have inspired me to give it a try once again. I would love a tutorial for knitting entrelac in the round. Thank you so much.
Thank you sooooooo much, this was such a clear video, having conquored socks I may now jump in the deep end with a pair of entrlac socks!!! Knitting entrlac in the round could be an excellent follow up video, its the small tips that make such a difference.
i love entrelac socks...let's see what I can do buuuut...it's probably gonna take a bit because this video took way too long to record. Also, you will notice that's it's actually much easier. Just cast on, join in the round, knit across one row and then start with the base triangles. And then you can basically just knit standard entrelac rectangles across.
@@NimbleNeedles would you recommend the standard sock yarn and 2.5 mm needles to start with. I can imagine a fine 2.0 knit sock to look amazing in this.
@@metaimagery2084 can't say this of the hook as it would depend on the yarn. YOu can pick DK and knit 3 mm or so as well. But "sock yarn" is not a fixed wpi
Thank you for another great tutorial. You always make it so easy to understand. One thing that caught my attention for the right triangle 18:49 … in your written repeat, you have written K#, p2tog for all the purl rows instead of p#. I got it right when I followed your video, but when I referred back to the screen shot I took later, I got confused and had to look back on the video again to make sure I had done it right. 😂
Ok I got so hooked that I am now 160 x 40 cm into my first ever entrelac blanket🤓 I use 7mm needles and a bulkyer wool in order to finish the blanket before it finishes me😁
Another GREAT tutorial!!! Thank you!! It helps so much as many of us are visual learners, You are very clear and well spoken in what you are explaining and take your time to demonstrate different ways to achieve the knitting techniques... I had never thought about using the crochet hook to pick up stitches!! that makes it so much cleaner looking!!!
You make it so clear and easy to understand! Also gives me another techniques in my arsenal. I have really appreciated your videos as a new knitter, hopefully I'll get to use this pattern in a future project!
How impressive is this! Oh my goodness. This makes me excited to try knitting again. I crochet but I can't seem to get the hang of knit. But go you! You make it look super easy 😊
Thank you for sharing this. You made it very simple to understand and I made a miniature entrelac cot blanket using your most excellent hints and tips😊. I enjoyed watching the design and colours come together - it takes a lot of time in miniature and the end result is just lovely so I will be doing this again but only smaller pieces like the 1:12th scale cot blanket which measures 6.5cms x 9.5cms😄! Thanks again🤩 🧶
Extremely helpful introduction to entrelac knitting. I admire the black and white Bavarian leg warmers and wonder whether the pattern is available anywhere. I think in a larger gauge, it would make a very warm scarf.
Happy to help. And don't feel intimidated...take one little stitch at a time and it will work. Besides, you can always come back and ask your questions here and I'm sure we'll find a solution together.
I have been wanting to do this and every pattern is so hard to understand but your tutorial is 100% what I needed to inordernto make my own pattern up I just needed a base to start at thank u so much you got a new subscriber
Hello Norman. Thank you very much for this tutoriial. I have watched this particular posting many times in the past year. I would greatly appreciate a continuation or another instruction video of you knitting Entrelac in the round. Or maybe a pattern of your traditional Bavarian sock. I have watched your Socks for Beginners turorial, but I seem to come back to this Entrelac turorial, because I keep either missing how to control the pickup stitches and the left triangle filler stitches, especially when beginning from the last base triangle. (That first left filler triangle is always "wonky" 😄 Again, Thank you for sharing your expertise.
hm...yeah...well..hm..maybe I can do something this summer. i doubt however, I will ever do a video for these traditional bavarian socks. Too much work and the demand is..well..let's say it doesn'T appeal to a larger audience ;-)
@@NimbleNeedles Thanks for the immediate response. I hope your visit to the far East was enjoyable. Maybe, some day, in the far future you could, maybe, consider a sock design that incorporates the entrelac pattern. I can imagine the intricate and difficulties of even just the increases and/or decreases for entrelac. 🤔🤯. Lovely day to you Norman🤗
Hi norman, i just started knitting a year ago.. i still don't understand about 'short row' in knitting.. i've searched all tutorials on youtube and still don't understand.. I know you are an expert in knitting. And you are also a good teacher.. I will be very grateful if you make a video about short row, what is short row? what is the function of short row? what is it used for? and how many ways are there to do it? maybe like something deep about short row 😁 sorry for asking too much 😬 Btw, I'm a big fan of you. All your videos are very good quality. I give a lot of thumbs up and subscribe to your 2 channels. Thank you very much, in a short time I learned a lot from you. Keep working norman.. We need someone like you in our knitting world 🥰
i have that planned out already. Let's see when I find the time. There will however, shortly be a short row video on my second channel . But just for one selected version.
Norman, please could you do a tutorial on entrelac using a variety of stitch patterns within the triangles ie moss stitch, cable etc? I learn so much from you. Thanks!
One thing I struggled with with sock knitting was the fit, you explained that very well in your sock video, but one thing I have been playing with and would love a video of yours on, is controlling the change of stitch count from top half of the sock to the smaller number required for the foot. My solution was to adjust the stitch reduction with the german short row heel turn, making the heel wide enough to reduce the stitch count with the turn and that has worked, but I would love your opinion on this.
Thank you so much, especially for the chart Even not a beginner,I couldn’t knit this pattern by following the other videos Now with the chart and great tips I will knit great sweater, have the idea. It will be great if you can make the video how to increase or decrease to form the shape,I will make the panel and knit the rest of the sweater separately Thanks, best regards
when it comes to increasing or decreasing, there is not only once technique. When i'm knitting entrelac in the round, I typically decrease the stitch count of my entrelac rectangles gradually by sneaking in a k2tog. Right now I am super busy but i'll put it on my list of ideas.
Im in love with your content Norman, this looks awesome. Im pretty good at knitting almost everything even round sweaters from the bottom to top but im very very bad at patterns.. When it comes to those, i keep forgetting :)) I will deffo try this and let you know. Lots of loves.
happy to hear that and definitely give me a shoutout once you mastered the technique :) (PS: I am not very good at counting and keeping track myself. always have to read my knitting!)
That is so interesting! I really like that design. I would love to make a scarf or two using entrelac, but would like to practice making a few hot pads first, which brings up more questions…double sided? Sew two together?? Make a continuous tube? I may have to make a few dozen hotpads before truly understanding this beautiful stitch!
well..for a scarf you can knit in garter stitch. It's the exact same technique but you knit across all rows (and might have to exchange a p2tog for a k2tog). Then you get a reversible fabric.
Thank you, this was an enormous help. Only thing I can't work out just now is how to avoid bleed-through on the knit-together side of the strips. Tried slip stitch, and turning the first stitch either side before knitting as well as aligning the stitches before purling them together. No really satisfactory result with either of those.
Loved the video and would like to learn how to do entrelac in the round. For future tutorials, how about brioche knitting? I’ve tried many times but can’t get the hang of it. I’m sure with your expertise you could demystify it. 😀
I was so intimidated by this technique until I found this video. It is rather confusing when you just read a pattern. I also really like that you offer so many different ways to get the same results. So many patterns lead you to believe that there is only one right way to do things.
I can knit entrelac very well, but I want to knit a sweater with a ribbed round or crew neck, can you help with a "how to do it"? Your instructions are nice and clear, and I would really appreciate it.😊❤
