David Phelps and SoHyang (김소향), two of the best singers alive today. Both has as strongest point the belted notes. and were the highlights of the high notes battles. Enjoy, and comment what you think about!
misukiy Lambertson And David maintains a supported and even column of sound all the way up in his mix. Adam can scream as many Bb5s as he want, he would never be able to project as well as David.
SuperPianogirl123 You seem to know nothing about Adam or male vocals. Adam has been in musical theater since he was 10, and he was on the cast of wicked and Rocky horror picture show. He can project a D5 over an audience without a microphone. Look at his American idol performances to to see him sustain fully supported C5s, D5s, E5s (ALOT), F5's, and G5s with ease. He has is near flawless live and he's a very high tenor. If you compare david's C5 to Adams it's incredible how much better he is. Look up "Adam Lambert ring of fire live" or "whole lotta love" the difference is insane. I'm a male vocalist who specializing in belting, what David does is skillful, but it's the easy form of belting for men.
I have neve heard any male vocalist sound and resonate like David Phelps, beautiful tone and outstanding technique. In my personal opinion, he pushes some notes sometimes, his mix sounds a little bit too chesty, maybe. Sohyang is the queen of resonance, she resonates with a perfectly balanced mix each time she opens her mouth to sing, even her C6 is simply outstanding ( I have seen and heard her mix up to a C#6 sitting down). I do thing that Sohyang is a tiny bit better than him technique wise. Although, oh dear lord, what singers!!!! Most def the best in the world today.
I wouldnt say David is the BEST TENOR ever. There are many great opera tenors and arguably better than David. However, I can agree that David is one of the best tenors of this generation.
He sings actually a bit light for the sake of ease. Tenors can belt these notes significantly heavier. Like wayyyyy heavier! David Phelps sings very light compared to singers like Del Monaco
Damn! When I saw the title i was thinking "You're comparing his F4 to her F5? There's no way he can win this," but this makes much more sense, lol. I have no clue who won. I wanna say David because for whatever reason it takes a lot for a male vocalist to impress me and he DOES, but that's biased. I think they're technically equal when it comes to resonance, but because Sohyang's mix is more even than his I think she wins.
When I said that, I meant that her mix stays the same throughout and his gets headier as he goes higher, so she wins. Not that hers has more head in it. I guess I should've worded it better lol. Love them both though.
Lambily Loft When I said that is because he makes what he wants until D5, he has chest-dominant(until A4), balanced and head dominant notes, he loves play with. While SoHyang mantain a balanced mix most of time.
Awesome video. This battle is definitely a tie. Not sure why all of these Sohyang stans are automatically choosing her because she chooses to use a more "balanced mix" when belting. However they're failing to see that David has complete control over his mixed voice & chooses to manipulate the ratio of head voice he applies to his belts depending on the message he is trying to convey with the song. I don't think head dominant "belts" will fit his songs at all especially from an interpretation point of view. Anyway both are great - the amount of resonance in this video was out of this world. Keep up the good work.
ale5677 Both can freely alter the chest-head ratio of their mixes and execute crescendos and decrescendos on extremely high notes (SoHyang upto F#5 and Phelps upto B4 I think). Phelps employs them more often (to emote) while SoHyang prefers to transition to and from head voice to get a similar effect.
mj UK2013 Not once drop of resonance, balanced mix THROUGHOUT. Didn't drop support (David didn't drop much support) Higher level of resonance over a longer period of notes, etc etc.
Both are equally amazing. David maintains an amazing tone when belting and his belt have a clear quality to them, amazing technique. SoHyang belts out the most amazing B5s, she is a virtuoso.
What matters is that both of these greats are ANOINTED, humble servants of the Lord, have dedicated their lives to singing for Him and have made the choice to not seek their own glory. It's no coincidence that the very best male vocalist and female vocalist are both gospel singers... so I really want to know when they are going to bless us with a duet.
I expected Sohyang's F#5 crescendo in I Always Miss You to be here cuz I think that IOMW climactic ending was overused but still..awesome video! My most favorite vocalists everrrr. I love David's C5 the most and.. Sohyang's B5 (Where are You) will forever give me intense goosebumps, my favorite out of all her belts!
I just didn't use her F#5 at I Always miss you because even being overused the F#5 here is far better. David would win easily (in my opinion) on that note, principally if I used a crescendo note for him too. The B5 in Where are You is my favorite belt from her too :)
I would use her F#5 from "The day was Sunny kiss" (I think the right translation would be "The day when sunlight kissed me", but that's how you can find it on RU-vid xD)
Who wins? We all do, what an awesome pair of singers. This was my first time hearing SoHyang and I'm already a fan. I've listened to David for years, so I already love him. Thank you for introducing me to SoHyang!
Both of them are gospel singer and angels right under God😉 I am a fan of Sohyang I am very thankful for this video because I can find a very good singer named David rather than a result of the confrontation. Thank you😆
Rafael Araújo I love her sooo much! My favorite artist is Beyonce and Chris brown at the moment. I also like J cole, Jay z, Kendrick Lamar, and a diehard MJ and Prince fan. Oh and i like Queen, Mariah, and Lauryn Hill
Jungshook :P fact is not something that everyone has to agree on because that makes it a major preference. Facts are based on evidences, not the mass' agreement lol. Also, for a Male Vocalist, David is really incredible its just that Sohyang is also a superwoman if you compare her to a regular contemporary singer.
Sohyang's brings me chills but David Phelps' brings tears to my eyes. Both are amazing uniquely but I find myself listening to David Phelps more just because of personal choice. Why can't people just appreciate both instead of saying who's better? Anyway, thank you for putting this together!
David, in my opinion, has the GREATEST mix ratio of any male singer I've heard. It's so unbelievably EVEN all throughout. And his placement is beyond consistent. The corresponding notes with SoHyang's, he definitely won this battle
1 David won 2 David 3 David 4 Both were amazing 5 Both 6 Both 7 SoHyang , but David did very well 8 Sohyang sure 9 Sohyang 10 David , but Sohyang was great 11 I love her Bb5 Sohyang 12 Sohyang , it s her better note 13 Sohyang Sohyang won this epic battle
When I listen to sohyang's cool song, I feel orgasm. It's different from simply a screaming singer. She has a sweet tone and a freely up and down voice. She is the best female vocalist in the world. It is too sad not to act actively in front of the public because it's a CCM singer. I want to see and hear more of the talent that God gave her.
I Worship Gays And Satan She's a woman and so naturally her voice is placed higher than his. There is literally half an octave difference between their tessituras, therefore it only makes sense to compare their belting techniques exemplified in notes that lie in their comfort zones.
I Worship Gays And Satan Furthermore, how exactly did you come to a conclusion her mix is more even? There is no such thing as a balanced mix voice; it's either chest dominant mix, or head dominant mix.
+mj UK2013 Alright, calm down, by balanced mix I mean she doesn't loose quality in technique or resonance from C5-C6 therefore, it's balanced, not leaning more on one side. Also I'm saying the fact that SoHyang is achieving equal resonance to David and I want to say better technique, from nearly an octave higher, it's more impressive to me personally. This is not discrediting David whatsoever, I'm being slightly hypercritical here in order for me to pick a winner because they're both incredible in their own respects; it is a battle.
Ronny carter So you require a Soprano to sing lower than a man? Not because Sohyang can belt higher also the breath control and mix.But there is no "WHO IS BETTER" because they are my fav.
first, he said queen of which not only means she can sing higher, but with support, ressonance and she can mix perfectly.second, he's a man of course he can go low. BUT, if you compare, sohyang can go low up to D3/E3 and David E2 so basicly only an octave of difference, and yet, sohyang can go much higher.. overall, it's reallly hard to compare this
They both have their victories in different parts of the ranges included in this video. For me, Phelps completely obliterated Sohyang from F4-D5. He is just absolutely insane over there my god. Sohyang, on the other hand, took the lead from Eb5-C6 and her belts are like hearing the angels of heaven. Very very insane for both of them and it is extremely hard to chose. Mrs. Sohyang is better at higher tones, but then Mr. Phelps evens it out with with his stunning soulful lows. It would be a shame if I decided who won because both have their ups and downs in this battle. Also, isn't it crazy that Phelps is going against a female FULL LYRIC soprano?? He has a male voice and can belt like that! You should keep that in mind for sure. In the end, definetly a tie! Love both though :)))
My opinion: Round 1 So hyang round 2 So hyang round 3 David round 4 So hyang round 5 David round 6 David ( my favorite clip of him) round 7 David round 8 So hyang Round 9 So hyang Round 10 So hyang Round 11 So hyang (David's Eb5 still awesome) Round 12 So hyang (my favorite clip of her) Round 13 So hyang
I’ve dedicated several programs in my show to unveil David’s amazing voice. The supposed battle between this two is impossible to conceive. Different styles, voices and techniques. Comparing them is ridiculous! Displaying a battle even more. Winner here? Both. Who lost? The title over this video
Both of them are the best singer in the world ! By the way, I think "So Hyang" must be out of this world. (Considering perfect singing skills, high-pitched precision and sustainability, clear and unique voices, voice control and also, freely perfect singing various genres such as Pop, Jazz, Rock, Hip Hop, R&B, Classic, Gospel…)
both are god given talent, i love phelps for the masculinity he maintains through his whole voice, its mad difficult for a male singer to accomplish what he has
compare male and female is really hard and unfair, but this video is awesome. it's my opinion 1.both of two are resonant as hell 2. phelps use too chesty belt, sohyang is more balance, but for me when compare to other soprano, her voice is a little too heady from C5-E5. ifin that range she choose to project a fuller sound, that would be awesome
At first I thought that it wasn't a good ideia. But it's different and cool. LOL, now I have a lot of battles in mind like Whitney vs Luther, Beyoncé vs Jackie Wilson, Jeffrey Lewis vs Amber Riley, Adam Lambert vs Vanessa Amorosi.
I can’t choose they’re both too amazing. I replayed David’s Bb4 more times than I’m comfortable admitting! That airy quality and perfect resistance gave me Mariah Carey feels.
Definitely SoHyang. She maintains a balanced mix, consistent tonal quality, support and freaking VIBRATO all the way up to her highest note in the video-even a C#6, her highest belt ever. David, on the other hand loses vibrato after C5-although he acquired it on that very strained Eb5-and lost tonal quality at the top (that F5 sounded like a squeal with the effeminate tone and no vibrato). Timbre and emotion are subjective, but I like SoHyang more. They are basically the gender equivalent of each other in regards to technique, and even so they still have their flaws. There really is no such thing as the perfect singer.
AJRA David didn't loses vibrato after C5. Watch him singing O Holy Night, he has plenty of sustained C#5s with vibrato. And that Eb5 wasn't very strained lol.
Rafael Araújo Okay, I stand corrected. He didn’t have vibrato past C5 in the clips that you showed in this particular video. The Eb5 was the exception, and it was still somewhat strained. Perhaps not as much as I made it seem in my original comment, but still a little forced nonetheless.
even though sohyang's Mix is a bit more balanced, I'm just blown away by David... They two are perfect singers and they both give me eargasms but David give me chills on top and touches my soul!
Why is everybody saying that her mix is more balanced as a positive point against Phelps? I had to watch each one for 3 hours to make this video, and he uses his mix better than her. David makes what he wants with his mix(SoHyang too but she prefer to mantain the balance), he is so dynamic. Look at that G#4, only someone with a improved mix and head voice can do this crescendo so well. I saw he doing that as easy as C4 and in unbeliveable notes as C5 and C#5, that's crazy! I think I've only saw Barbra with this control before.
yess, Phelps dynamics is superb. he can sing C5 and even higher very soft, small but still control the chest/head ratio perfect, and i like phelps's powerful chesty belt more, though a heady belt is more healthy
Hyang has a higher range which makes sense since she's a soprano. So she sounds more impressive because the notes are higher. However david is superior both technically and artistically, if only a little.
