Made me think about when Peter Jackson was trying to tell Christopher Lee what sounds to make during a scene in Lord of the Rings (where Saruman got stabbed in the back by Wormtongue and falls off the tower), and Lee corrected him on what that actually sounds like, because Lee actually knew what noises a man makes when he's getting shanked. (Christopher Lee was a spy back in WW2 and a Nazi hunter for a brief time afterward.) Some actors have deep wellsprings from which to draw experience, and some of those deep wellsprings reach into dark places.

“You need to be a gangster, need a be a killer, a lil yum yum” in this line denzel is actually referencing a famous Chicago gangster named Lil Yummy who was only 12 when he was killed. "What do you see when you look at me?" It's the same thing he said to Nikolai in the first movie. Even more powerful in this situation though, it's as though he's asking Miles, "Do you see what I am? Do you want to be like me ? (for good *OR* bad) And telling him he has no idea what death is. Young people have such a hard time realizing that it's forever. All the chances lost. Forever. Love this scene so much.

That and if America had a better grip on poverty management via social safety nets, like other comparable 1st world nations. Young people in poverty aren't gonna have many positive influences, let alone positive father figures, negative father figures can lead them to crime too. Crime has always been a poverty and wealth inequality issue. Solving those issues or at least managing them better, brings forth positive influences, within improving poverty-stricken communities.

This is what, exactly what America needs in every corner.. this representation and attitude with our youth. Until we don’t understand this we won’t prevail. And I don’t care about those who say America is the greatest country in the world. Because the truth is that today? Is far from that.

The best thing about this to me is it's established already that Denzel's character's past was as one of the government's best killers, and he doesn't at all love what he did, and admits he deserves to die for it. It's not just trying to be there for this kid, he doesn't want him to grow old if he makes it that far to regret his decisions.

Its too much artistic license to have a heart to heart & not expect the thugs to never appear. Reminds me of Steven seagal movie where everyone magically runs out of billets at the same so he can do his martial arts spiel.
