In this talk, Niema Moshiri talks about his experience as a student in a massive classroom, and how this to his goal of rethinking education. As classroom sizes continue to increase, he illustrates the benefits of adaptive online education as a replacement for the traditional classroom.
Alexander Niema Moshiri is currently a Ph.D. student in the Bioinformatics and Systems Biology program at the University of California, San Diego. He works on computational biology, with a research focus on phylogenetics and phylogenomics. Aside from research, Niema places a heavy emphasis on teaching, namely on the development of online educational content, primarily Massive Adaptive Interactive Texts (MAITs). For the past few years, he has worked with Dr. Pavel Pevzner and Dr. Phillip Compeau in the development of the Bioinformatics Specialization Track on Coursera, and has separately co-authored a free online MAIT on Data Structures that is being used at UCSD and USD.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The problem with online education, at least in Costa Rica, is that not all the people have access to a decent internet connection, not because it is not available but because some families don´t have money to pay for it. This is creating a big gap between social classes, where families with a better economical situation are continuing with a virtual learning process, but on the other side, some families are struggling to survive one day at a time, specially now with all the COVID 19 issues, this is seriously affecting the education process in many countries in our region, if we are moving forward to this new online education era, the governments need to invest first on decent and affordable connectivity services first to look for some equity among the population.

this can also be applied to the formats that are restricted in uploading things in the USA online classrooms. A lot of formats you have to pay for or have a free trial and keep having to make new accts to avoid paying for it. Therefore making it more difficult for the same social class reason.

Individualized Self-Paced Learning ISPL Thank you so very much, your talk kind of cemented my thought and ideas on how to cope up with shift in the teaching and learning. It is time for us all to adapt to a more interactive and collaborative learning methods, and the web is full of useful tools. We need to help our learners to shift gears to this fast and abundant learning style.

We need to make Wi-Fi accessible to all people in all geographic locations in order to break down barriers due to economics affecting learners. Ideally, access to a human teacher and fellow students helps us explore our ideas more deeply but online courses are a great resource when in person attendance is not possible. This will be great for professional training.

One thing he actually didn't get is the alternative proposals and approaches to education... when he mentions the certificate at the end of the course he wants to prove it meaningless, but IT IS NOT. It is there not a certificate but as a short-end goal that can be rapidly obtained. That is mainly because of gamification in education and it's Skinner box's tactics, which, in my view, are way more important than online learning. Making learning online doesn't make it better nor worse, it is how you teach not the technology you use that makes it good. Technology is indeed a good tool, but like any tool, it is not a solution.

It is frustrating, as an online high school teacher, to hear a well meaning Ted Talk, that fails completely to be informed, or up to date. There are programs way ahead of this already with systems that are already attempting to accommodate and scaffold at the level that the student needs. Everything he presented is already in the works! He made no mention of Canvas, Blackboard, or BrightSpace which, with a good online teacher, are already doing a lot of this. There is a lot of interaction online. I chat with students, do Discussion Boards with students, email students, video chat with students, video chat with groups of students, and I even make personalized youtube videos to help students with specific problems. Also, all of my students respond in a discussion, not just the student who speaks up. Online, EVERY student discusses every topic, and EVERY student can get personalized help if needed. My daughter is doing her entire last semester of college online, and she loves it. MOOCs are shameful, but there is soooo much more to online learning already. I honestly thought this video was about 7 years old, but it is not. MAITS sounds great, but it also misses the point that the BIG advantage online is learning is supported by video. Videos make it personal, and for those who struggle with reading as an avenue to learning, video is changing the playing field. I watch students with reading comprehension problems achieve amazing stuff because the software reads with them, and the videos support a preferred learning style for many students. I believe all he is really talking about is an online learning system that "accommodates" to the student. Those are already rolling. They are far from perfect, but they exist.
@williamzhao2521
@williamzhao2521 5 лет назад
the problem is. Those that know this, don't matter, and those that matter, don't know this. Think of the amount of personalize learning you can make by one on one online tutorials rather than 100 to 1 classroom teaching. The issue is that before the industrial revolution, there were small class sizes similar to the online tutorials, instead of blindly copying the past, we need to embrace that personalized learning pace provided by online teaching.

The truth is most online courses from traditional universities are basically a joke. It sounds like you are doing it right with online learning. I think the big takeaway for a teacher is the teacher needs to be actively using the latest technology to improve the learning experience. Most teachers don't do this because they're basically technology illiterate or they have a phobia of using new technologies. That's the reality.

He is talking about something completely different from what you are talking about. He is talking about a fully automated and perfectly scalable online learning platform. All of those sites are just glorified message boards. Besides that, what he is referring to is even beyond Coursera. He is talking about a theoretical platform that is free, engaging, interactive, certifiable, and most of all, educational. Imagine you turn on your computer to start learning about the thermodynamics of combustion engines. Within the course you can create your own 3D engine by changing different characteristics of it. As you design it then it reveals the stats, heat distribution, thermal effeciency, and other stats. Clicking on the stats gives formula for how they are formed, how they can be improved, and other applications of the rule. You are then in competition with your classmates to see who can design the most effecient engine. All of this is an interactive game that teaches you concepts that you would have read in a book or had a teacher talk about in a powerpoint.

They have variety of topics all related to technology. It's a good website you better check it out. BTW they also sell coins for their website that you can use as a premium user, they are LEDU coins. :)

For an example of what Nierna is talking about check out the over 600 interactive maps of history, science, weather and climate at Climateviewer. org to see how personalized individual learning is not only fascinating but an effective.tool for teachers who can customize each map based on a wide selection of base maps, 2D or 3D, terrain or flat, merge maps together, download them and edit them or embed them in their school web site. You can even see the solar system and eclipses. Students can even digitally walk through the mountains and valleys of the Travels of Marco Polo while reading the book online.

Ah, what a lovely drink of Kool-Aid. I finally understand that there is no existential imperative in authentic education. And we are not embodied beings, but rather two-dimensional and virtual. What a revelation! And finally, all of the pesky inspiration and romance has been removed from the educational experience! What a refreshing drink!
