GM Oliver "Pintados" Garduce the essence behind Filipino Martial Arts. He talks about the differences between art and combat and how to train randomized patterns and be efficient.
Reminds me of the first time I trained Kali under a grandmaster. We were doing the 12 basic strikes partner drill with sticks and he told me to stop putting my strength behind every strike as if I was swinging a baseball bat because it was slowing me down and just relax and go with the flow. When I asked him how a weak strike to the forearm was going to work against an aggressive resisting opponent full of adrenaline, he switched to a real ginunting blade and told to me to stick my arm out and see whether I could withstand a weak strike from that. I never applied strength to my strikes again from that moment on, and just learned to rely on speed and accuracy more to improve my Kali.
How often does a street fight involve a ginunting blade? Stick fighting drills are good for increasing hand speed and accuracy, but not for learning how to fight. To win a street fight you have to be ballistic in everything you do, even when you yield to catch their energy for a throw or some kind of hold or takedown. The only time you can win with weak strikes is when you are the superior fighter, but unless you are a grandmaster you won't be able to tell until the fight is over. Be first and be devastating.
Over here in the Philippines, it's actually more common than you think. Especially in the rural provinces were 13" bolos are common household items and are legal for farm and labor workers to openly carry. In big cities, it is common for a lot of taxi drivers and car owners to hide either a steel pipe or a bolo under their seat inside their vehicles for "emergencies". The steel pipes are favored more as you can always claim it is a jack handle if the cops start asking questions after an incident. Even a weak strike from a steel pipe will incapacitate you if it hits bone.
@@kristofferagustin6315 if you're local, there should be many schools available to you depending on where you are. Keep in mind though, there are different styles that have different philosophies. Explore which system works for you. Search arnis if you're in Luzon.
One hit, one kill. That's true. In the streets in the Philippines, you learn how to either run as fast as you can to avoid the conflict or you stay, but you always fight to maim or kill. There is no middle ground. There is no art to it. It's just combat and survival. If you decide to fight, be ready for the consequences later. Patay kung patay. Hospital or sementeryo lang.
@@emeraldlucky1274 sa pilipinas uso baril, walang magagawa ang kutsilyo dun kahit magaling kapa sa lahat ng martial arts kung isang bala kalang isang bala kalang
But the thing is, street fights are rare and only on small things. What is common in the Philippines (Manila/Tagalog area) is assassinations. Being attacked with a knife is an assassination, and most prefer to do it while your looking the other way. Guns are also very common, no amount of stick training will save you from that. It's best to stick in groups where everyone is armed, preferably with both guns and knives. Someone has to watch your back, and one has to watch the surroundings.
As South Korean, I have trained Kendo for 10 years. When I visited Filipino Martial Art and sparred with one of them. They were super fast and strong holding double heavy sticks and swinging with one hand. I was like WTF... Filipino martial arts are very impressive. Once in Busan (Korean City) Korean mafia who owned hotels hired Filipino martial artists as bodyguards with enormous amounts of money. When rival 7 mafia members came along all armed with double daggers to assassinate his boss but the Filipino guy beat the shit out of them all with two sticks without getting any scars. He was a legend. I was the security officer of that hotel and the Philipino guy told me to stay and guard the CEO the boss. And that happened. In the Philippines, everyone has guns in the house. But In South Korea guns are very rare. So only the boss possesses a pistol as the symbol of power. Most of the members are using melee weapons like Katana or heavy daggers. It was like a medieval war here. That was 10 years ago. The Korean government destroyed most of the Korean Mafia. Now I work as a petition officer at the embassy. Anyway, it was glorious. True warriors.
This is the balintawak arins art created by Anciong Bacon after world war 2 when all of the other arnis eskrima styles have been on top of their game. It is no joke. Straight to the point. Very dangerous if not given any restraint. There has been only a few teachers of this arnis style with different system of instuctions. It is really nice to see these teachers slowly emerging to the world and catch up to other well known arnis styles.
greetings from Italy. I have been two months in the Philippines, thanks for the welcome and for the wonderful nature. I have visited Manila, Daet, Lake Sebu, Isulan, Bagumbayan, Bansada, General Santos. I wrote and published a book when I was in the Philippines. The title is THE APPEARENT ISLAND SILENCE.
The best self defense is to run if you have a chance, but no time or chance to escape, use your skill as kali expert.. That the master always taught me in different martial art I enrolled here in the Philippines.
Makes me wish these people are the ones who get more attention. Sad to see that con artists like detroit urban survival makes bank by fooling people and even worse, giving them a false sense of security potentially getting killed. We need more authentic teachers like this who knows how to entertain, but at the same time teach actually useful self defense lessons, and give them more exposure and financial support.
Always love the Kali stuff! Hope you guys end up being able to do a full digital seminar with this guy, he's got some really cool techniques that I think could really help take my Kali to the next level.
There’s a folk dance in my provine called “sakuting”. I used to danced when i was a kid that’s why i came to love arnis and i wanted to learn ever since. I hope i can have the chance soon.
Here in Cebu we also have one called Moro Moro dance, where a pintados fights with a Spanish soldier and actually the same story as for the sinulog celebration. We still have it yearly during Fiesta of Saint Francis of Assisi at Maslog Danao City Cebu.
Grand Master Oliver Pintados really blow my mind with this video about the reality of edge weapons. The closest I can say is the fight on "THE HUNTED" with Benicio Del Toro & Tommy Lee Jones, no happy ending just a lot of blood for the two parties.
Sir ma epagmalaki kita sa Buong mundo, sa Filipino martial Arts, toto o kang tao,, sa pag toturo, tanx God's love you, and give you more power, to show us
I practice Silat and Escrima since 1993 and Taiji, Bagua and Xingyi since 2008. I was taught to train always against multiple armed opponents. I can't train with anyone any more. I always end up teaching them stuff. I lived in a Filipino and Korean neighborhood in Los Angeles and enjoyed play fighting with my friends. I miss play fighting with friends. When I was 16 YO I knew I wanted to practice martial arts for the rest of my life!
You sound like a great guy. I’ve learned some martial arts throughout the years, and I’d certainly want to learn from you if you were around my neck of the woods! lol
😎saludos desde chile sud america ver las artes marciales filipinas me alegra mucho por es ver un arte esencialmente puro no contaminado con lo meramente comercial es un arte 100%guerrero 👏👏👏👊👊👊👍👍👍
Thanks for the video. I am mixing my karate knowledge with some Kali/Eskrima ideas I am gathering and if the teacher is reading this words, Thanks you for sharing your experiences.
Me as well karate was my first martial they harden me at a young age it was real karate , just no forms just for self defense looking back this guy was far ahead of time I did with him also crane and tiger , I found he was in with mob years later when your a kid , you don't relize
Basically they have connections .Chinese martial arts , karate and Filipino martial arts has so many similar concept and techniques . The only difference is FMA was meant for bladed weapons and killing your enemy.
I just bought the digital seminar. I've been a student of Kali Center and Garimot Arnis for the last 2 years and I seeing this video again now compared to a year ago, I see the value in it. I'm gonna train it up starting this week, hoping to apply it to my other training.
This is a great teacher! I hope this video becomes popular! More people need to hear this kind of message. Knives are incredibly versatile and knife disarm unless your are wearing some kind of full body armor is rarely a good idea.
It's probably better for them, there aren't any frauds out there trying to promote their fake ass mystical ancient Filipino secrets. All you have is the real deal, cause no movies to create a market for scammers.
FMA Kali arnis emerged as a way of survival and protection, which is very useful in the islands of the philippines which is harsh and challenging. Its also street tested considering the violent streets of the philippines. Unlike other martial arts thats mostly dance rituals and field demonstrations.
GM Oliver is one of the nicest people I've ever met. He's a very nice and kind man, but he's also very dangerous man. That IMHO is the kind of man i want to teach me his art. He is the real deal.
Most of what he is saying are true, When my grandfather taught me how to properly defend myself against my enemies. SPEED, PRECISE ACCURACY AND AWARENESS OF THE SURROUNDING IS THE KEY TO STAY ALIVE WHEN IN COMBAT AND MOST OF ALL MAKE YOUR WEAPON FREE OF DAMAGE OR AVOID LANDING YOUR WEAPON AGAINST OPPONENT WEAPON DURING COMBAT. IN THAT WAY, YOU CAN STILL FIGHT A THOUSAND BATTLES WITHOUT CHANGING THE WEAPON YOU ARE USING.
Great thing that filipino martial arts is started to know about. Hindi pa dumarating ang mga dayuhan sa bansa May sarili nang programa pang depensa ang pilipinas gaya ng arnis.
much better and makes sense, the disarm principle is not reliable in reality. create the safe distance or engage in a fast and unpredictable manner., so far that is the essence of what he is saying. its about speed and accuracy. it is not an art of self defense but rather a strike/offense aimed combat skill
Very well said! That iis the best Practical Explaining & Demonstration about the Blade weapon. Lesson Learn... Dont Mess the guy if you dont know about his Skills in a Blade weapon. Even if you are a Martial Artist, or else You will be killed in a Seconds or in Instant. PUGAY PO! TO ALL FMA!🤩👍🗡⚔
I LOVE his comment at 8:20. In martial arts which contain knives, people do all these fancy cuts and slashes, but if you're in a real self defense situation, there is no match start, no projected strikes. If someone wants you dead, you won't know.
There was recorded time in Chinas ancient history during the time dynasty ruled China that there was a group of people being called pintados armed only by bolos and machetes raiding many coastal town and villages in china not for money only collecting something made of iron. They are so deadly on hand to hand fighting.
There is one underrated martial arts in PH that anyone can learn in just a few secs. Its the sayonatsi technic.. only filipino can relate maybe ... But i will explain how to execute the sayonatsi.. Its just easy ... Just take off your slippers and run for your life as fast as you can and this technic save many many lives already hahaha but most of the time this technic is used when dog chasing you hahaha
What is the name of this Teacher. I seek to study under him one day in the hopefully not too distant future, if I can track him down.....He is a true Eskrimador of the highest possible level. That was a treasure trove of insights and concepts taught in all of ten minutes. Brilliant
