Max you are right on track, you have made some very good observations about college education today. First let me introduce myself, I'm a 70 year old guy that stumbled on you channel and my career was not the usual/normal one for my generation. I went to college to pursue an accounting career that my father thought was the wise route to go. And I went along because he was footing the bill, that is what my generation did. My real passion was photography, which I did followed in college by working for campus newspaper, yearbook and photographing historic artifacts for the campus museum. Needless to say my grades were not top tier, but what I learn photographically was fantastic. It paved the way for my photographic career which I enjoyed for about 20 years as an evidence photographer in Michigan and later in Colorado. I did eventually get my Bachelors Degree after going to three schools; Michigan State University, Rochester Institute of Technology and finally finishing at University of Michigan. It my sound impressive but my grades were not fantastic, but during my career nobody ever ask me for my GPA or degree. They just looked at what I produced, that along with contacts I made along the way were far more important. So my advice would be follow your passion, but moderate it with your head and common sense.
Appreicate you sharing these stories, Dan! Totally agree - what you produce/who you know is a larger factor in "getting to where you want to be" rather than grades alone. Sounds like you've had a wonderful and adventurous life and career! Cheers,
Once again, this was absolutely fantastic. It’s really inspiring to see someone my age who’s going out there and doing amazing things! I wanted to say that as someone who’s been homeschooled/unschooled/worldschooled for my entire life, I definitely relate to what you said about how it feels like people are programmed to simply make it through school, and how it consumes their entire life. It’s sad honestly, and I see it a lot. I really admire how you’re looking at college, and not letting it stop you from achieving your goals, but rather using it as a learning experience and looking at it with a completely different, more self aware lense. You’re truly an inspiration Max.
I like ur cmnt I think the same he want to finish the college with full of joy as well as learnt a lot in intresting way not just to get degree and get a job 👌👌
Thank you so much for this video. I’m a senior in high-school rn and graduation is approaching so quickly. these past 4 years have been so hard on me mentally, mostly because my relationship with education is so damaged. Its like a toxic relationship that you can’t really escape, because that’s just how society is. I am scared that college will be the same way. This video helped me to realize that in the end I am the one in control of my education. Not my teachers or a grade or a status. I honestly have so much to say but i’ll save it for my journal😭. Once again, thank you Max :)) ps. i’ve been along for the ride since your France vlogs, and this is my first comment!
Totally feel you. If it makes you feel any better, I think college is a lot better when it comes to having more freedom to define how you want to learn. Depending on your major, you have a lot more free time and felxilbity! It feels a lot less claustrophobic in my experience.
as a college kid with four exams in physics and calculus within the span of three days this week, this video was much needed. it's truly amazing what you are doing in the world at this age. like you mentioned, I feel like most of us are just out here trying to get by, but life (and college) is sooo much more than that. it's cool to see somebody breaking the typical college mold, it makes me wonder how I can too.
I agree with you about the education system. Instead of really learning, one is more focused on just trying to pass the next exam and write the next paper, with lots of stress over grades and passing all of the classes, fear that if you fail you won't get the degree and be stuck with overwhelming debt that you can't afford. I managed to survive and graduate with honors but felt lacking in what I actually learned, and not even working in the field that I got a degree in.
Oh right in America the financial aspect is added... I live in Germany and here there is a lot of stress and complaining about the education system too, but at least most people can't really loose that much because of good public universities with no tuition fees
Education has not truly changed since the dark ages. We need to start teaching differently. Your vlog made me think about delivery methods, but most of all, learning outcomes. Sidebar: Man! I was so happy to see a new vlog! I think I’ve binged you twice. I love the cinematography, but I catch some thing different each time I watch. You’re very wise young man. Much Love
Skipping class rn. I feel like the days I do this is just kinds like a “healing day” in a way that it breaks the dumb daily routine that I have self imposed due to this idea I have of challenging myself academically no matter how I feel about it.
Please don’t skip and waste money to heal yourself as your saying you can do that by taking breaks maybe schedule one class a week so you can look forward to that healing day please don’t skip
Okay I finally had the time to come back and watch this video.. I feel what you're saying about focusing only on getting from point a to b, and it being an endless cycle.. somehow it was drilled into us to just keep going, to do one thing, in order to be able to do the next thing, so it can lead us to the next, and I'm just honestly so, so tired of that. I'm 24 years old, and I'm already tired. Because all I can see laid out for me is that. But I don't want it to be that really, I don't know how, but I want it to be about my friends and about time we spend together and adventure, and I want that to be my life and my priority, enjoying experiences and living and feeling and creating and I just don't know if it's possible when, really, some days all I can think of is that I need a job, and I need money, I need to fix my CV and I'm constantly, constantly looking for the "next thing" needed. I can't help but think that, since we're all thrown into this world knowing really nothing at the core of it all, it's only fair we get to enjoy it. I grew up thinking I needed to be special in some way relating to success, to do something great, but now... now I just want to have a great time, and I don't want to be special in that way anymore. I just want my time to be special. Yikes sorry for the unwarranted rant, it's been on my mind.
the constant dependency for money, rerouting you to constantly work, rather than create and explore is everything I hate after getting my first job at 17. I quit even though I still need money, and the job wasn't too bad.
Its great to see a reflection of what your going through across the world right now. I'm in my last year of school and I can relate and can understand what your doing in a way and what I'm trying to do. So thanks heaps Max and keep making the videos but remember to enjoy life and don't overthink it all, also breath.
As a full-time student who does streaming and my other stuff during the weekends or the week most of the time, School life needs to pause after I graduate. What Max said is true "School doesn't feel like school." I've always had this in mind since I can see it through the 'interested' in studying. Someone of us steps into school for a degree, to find or get a better income job when sometimes we forget that our mental and physical health also matters. Even in work life or whatever we do, we always feel "busyness" and forget that it is "okay" to take it slow and have a break. *Anyone reading this: Stay cozy, take your slow days and enjoy every moment of your life.*
I’ve only recently discovered your channel and I want to thank you for the work you put into editing and overall the concept of each video. Its really simple, inspiring and I love the atmosphere. As a 16 year-old I relate to what you’re saying and showing and I am always happy when you post:) And I have to say that even ads are so nicely integrated in your videos that you don’t wanna skip them)
You are such a beautiful person. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and perspectives. I've been having a hard time enjoying life recently, but you consistently show me the beauty of it. You are truly one of a kind, Max.
Max, this video brought back lots of memories of my own college experience. As an undergrad I used to say repeatedly that "I wasn't going to let college get in the way of my education." I was in the Chicago area and there were just so many opportunities I didn't want to miss. The Chicago "El" was basically across the street from my dorm and I would make time nearly every week to go downtown to hear the Chicago Symphony or something else that would push my horizons. I basically did the same thing in Grad School and I loved every minute of it. I was lucky to have had some fantastic professors who were very understanding of my desire to branch out beyond the classroom. I didn't really sacrifice getting good grades to allow me to explore other things. I was glad I did! :D
Beautiful story and video as always max! I always made a point during my engineering degree to live as much of life as I could during college! I had so many classmates that would try so hard for a 4.0 that they studied their college away. You’re definitely doing it right! The people and experiences you have are what make college worth it!
I appreciate this video, Max. I am constantly reminded by your life experiences that there is so much more out there and that we as humans are capable of anything when we have a vision and sufficient desire and/or motivation. I am currently feeling pretty stuck and trapped- like I’m operating on low power mode constantly and can’t seem to find a charger. I hope that I’ll return to this comment in the next few months with a new perspective on my current situation and thoughts. But until then, I will continue to use your videos and life as a great source of inspiration to draw from :)
It struck me when you were talking about the amount of studying you have to do to get good grades. There is a British film called The History Boys and it perfectly sums up the challenge of learning to pass exams against learning for the love of learning. The British element might be challenging but I highly recommend it.
This seems like such a refreshing college experience. It's alot different from what I'm experiencing in electrical engineering 😂. While i agree with most of your points, i think some people just inherently have more "work" to be done. Im only a junior in EE, but I have more work, personal projects, labs, technical clubs, studying, than i can ever hope to achieve in a day, but it's something i love doing. Its just really refreshing seeing other perspectives of the college experience. For now, i'll live vicariously through you 😂
LOL I definitely went through most of high school/college in this “programmed” manner you talked about, and I didn’t start thinking differently and making more of my own choices outside of the “normal” path until I studied abroad. That’s when something clicked for me, and it was like I’ve been a little more awake in my life decisions ever since. And so I wonder if going to high school in France as an American had a similar effect on you.
Yes! Living in France took me out of what I like to call the metaphorical conveyor belt or assembly line that society often constructs for us. It's not neccesiallry and evil or bad thing, but it often prevents us from thinking for ourselves. Traveling and experiencing other systems opens to your eyes to other paths and ways of approaching life! I think you're spot on there
Max, your videos always inspire me to take risks and dive deeper into live. And if you ask me, that's the greatest gift you could give someone. So thank you.
I also went to LA a few days ago and it made me feel so much better in general. I needed to go on an adventure and find myself again. I now feel more energized and focused than ever. I think its great to get out of my bubble once in a while and discover myself a bit. The bubble is great, and comfortable, and provides stability, but leaving it produces the moments that define identity.
This video relieved a lot of the stresses and the unknowns I have going into college next year. I appreciate the effort you put into your videos they are truly inspiring!
I'm literally sending this to all my friends I love your videos so much and they really just bring back this calm energy and make us think and really try and understand our own lives more. Thank you :)
College were for me the best years of my life. Not necessarily the happiest, but the best in terms of opening my mind and forging lifelong friendships. For other people I know, it was a miserable experience. I guess this person at the outset put it best: “College is what you make of it.” All the best!
“I think if you choose adventure and story, over productivity and efficiency, things come together in a more beautiful way.” well said max :D this is the motto I use for the decisions I make in life. life is an extra-long adventure, and we get to make decisions in-line with a more interesting narrative.
Hi max! I got in touch with your channel like a week ago, and I'm amazed by your way of thinking and the way you chose to live your life. I'm getting lots of inspiration and knowledge from your movies. Thank you very much, and I hope you keep being yourself 🫶
Max, lately I have come across your videos again after a while, and I have to say you're inspiring me a lot. I find my self trying to look at the world in a new perspective. I have been procrastinating with pursuing my filmmaking dreams and trying to create meaning through film, however after watching more of your videos I feel motivated to carry on and be optimistic about it!
I love seeing the strange ways different minds work in this world, and Max's mind is really interesting to see working through each new video its almost a refreshing way of thought. I love watching these videos, and seeing a different life through different eyes.
I like the part you said that it's a mutually beneficial relationship between learning outside and inside of school. I feel excited if I suddenly realize the connection of what I learn from school and outside of it. Now I feel like spending some time walking around where I live, but I think I am confined to the frame of the school system......maybe I should skip the class?😀
I've lived about 3 hrs from LA my whole life and surprisingly never been there, though my sister has been for a hockey game and I have been to San Francisco before. Living in California my whole life truly has been a blessing. 1 HR from the mountains and 1 HR from the beach. I've had PLENTY of trips to both throughout my life lol.
Hi Max, I watched you 3 years ago in Aix and now, here I am, staying on 4th du September Rue in Aix!! OMG - you've changed! Still the same, but not. Keep going and doing what you're doing. So glad college isn't getting you down. x
Your videos are so relaxing annd everytime I watch one of your videos I get a motivation boost. It´s also cool to see the projects you do. Also your editing style and the drone shots were amazing. And congrats on your Times square bill board. Keep it up max
Max, thank you sooo much for taking us along your journey of life. It Is so refreshing to see someone really understanding the core values of life and how to make the best out of it. I wish more people would question the norm and start to live like their innermost desires and feelings. I really enjoyed watching it! I'm wishing you the best!
This was absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Your style of sharing the seeking of your personal truth, is such a pure and intriguing art form! Thank you as always, for all that you do to share your art and with us all! :))
A good example with yourself.. That's fine when you focus on developing yourself.. all effort is traduced in glory. Congratulations for your progress. Be happy and stronger.
I really appreciate the way you articulated college experiences. In the past several years, I tried to fit in and were driven exhausted by competing with others in order to get better grades and better-paid jobs later. I'm not brave enough to escape from this route because I have no idea what to do with my life besides the conventional module. But I'm trying to figure out the career to dedicate to. You can't be more true about the purpose of college, which is to explore more about both yourself and this wild world, to gain knowledge either inside or outside class, and find you own way to lead a meaningful life. And great film as always!
Another really inspiring piece, Max. Love it. College was the absolute worst time in my life because I was so caught up in academics and finding a good job - just like you described. I almost want to say that I wish I could have watched this video 4 years ago, but the truth is that even my bad experience in college helped me learn and changed me for the better. Now, I'm in law school - which SHOULD be an even more rigorous academic experience - but I'm doing a much better job at striking a balance. I'm making friends, traveling, and working on side projects that I never would have considered college. Your point is extremely well taken, and it makes me really happy to imagine someone in my position 4 years ago watching this and actually making a change as a result. Keep it up!
If learning is about to getting knowledge of something that you didn't knew before, yes, it can be from work/life experience, but it can also be from college. Sometimes we are so full that we despise the honeycomb, it is not that is bad learning from other places, but is nice to remember that a honeycomb is still honey; So even if it's less than you usually take from life, apreciating something that is good still, can make you lose less than you would if not remembered that...
Max…fantastic video…I don’t entirely know how to describe your video style, but I sense a bit of an old-world French flavour towards your videos. I think you’re right about school, where I had recently just graduated from Rutgers University, I’m currently ruminating about my experience there…what did I really learn? Did I learn to think or to conform? What if I didn’t pursue college, how different would my life be? I keep thinking about how John D. Rockafeller helped found the Department of Education, and how this had seemed altruistic at first…this turned out not to be the case though as demonstrated by the quote “I don’t want a nation of thinkers, I want a nation of workers”. Education lets you learn, but not grow which means that just sticking to education purely won’t let you grow as a person. I think you hit it head on when you mentioned how you can learn through alternate methods instead of just learning from school…the world is full of different people, different experiences and different connections to be made.
I am 19 and i am really struggling with my life in this period..i would really love to talk with you about life in general.. love your videos btw.. Leonardo from Italy
I'm currently in this weird transitional phase where I'm having t decide weather to go to university, have a gap year or something else entirely and its frankly just overwhelming. I'm scared for what comes next and am being forced out of my comfort with thousands of decisions. Your videos are really helping me see someone go through something similar in the future and helping me make informed choices - so thanks :)
I recommend praying. I put my faith in Jesus and literally dropped out of college and now I’m back in school while also having been on a few televisions and just filmed a commercial campaign with Walmart. We’ve all been given a set of gifts and talents you can never go wrong with monopolizing what comes easy to you
In high school, I worked harder not smarter. In college, I worked smarter and not harder. In other words, I learned the minimal amount of effort I needed to still get As and Bs in my classes and have more balance in my life. Graduated with a 3.4 :)
Gosh, some wise things have been said there. And, how beautiful it's filmed. I love how much you think and search for like answers and ask so many inner questions. I especially loved the "if you choose adventure and story over efficiency and productivity things come together in a more beautiful way". I will take this idea to my life, thank you Max
dude , u really get the point. Italian high school (which i experience everyday ) really wants u to be 100% every single day you spend in the class...so students see weekend as an escape to a stressfull reality. in my opinion , this happens 'cause learning is not seen in the way it should be seen : not revising things without getting to know what they mean , but trying to internalize concepts. That' s how i keep on goin; otherwise , everything becomes hell. thx for sharing ur experience!
when I was at Uni so very many years ago, before tech as we know, before all of 'this' I had a professor whom I liked tell the class, something on the order of "None of you here in this class will be a millionaire/billionaire ie successful" and we were asking WTF. He said if that were to happen, we'd NOT be in college, we'd already be out there in the world creating the life we thought we were in school to achieve. I've never forgotten that.
Thank you Max for sharing your thoughts. I think for Americans skipping classes is a decision of which most of the students would not think in their wildest dreams. Every year longer spent in College sets you back like 9k$. Students are under pressure to finish their degrees. Of course there can be so many lessons be learnt outside the classroom (e.g through travelling, getting out of your comfort zone etc.), financially speaking skipping classes for most students and their families it is not worth it. Luckily, I go to College in Europe and do not have to worry about student debt since a semester only costs like 120€.
WRONG, you clearly have no understanding of American education, many local state universities(which is close to most European universities) provide virtually free tuition for most students who either have lower incomes or easy to get merit scholarships that waives off the vast majority of tuition in most cases, you're understanding of debt comes from mostly private uneristies in America, or big state colleges, AND ALSO THE FACT THAT MOST AMERICANS LIVE IN THEIR COLLEGES
@@persoro4015 ok, thanks for correcting me there! But shouldn't education be free for everyone? "... virtually free tuition for most students who either have lower incomes..." so what about average citizens? Why is it that students who want to become doctors, work their a$ses off to go to medical school and then go into debt of 100k? The country and its future is dependant on qualified workers, scholars, doctors etc.
@@DavidHAHergl The average citizen in america absolutely has access to free education somewhere, the question is where they choose to apply, and secondly for doctor's specifically, after only 10 years in working at a non profit organization(most hospitals are), all their loans will be forgiven, and if they don't finish, they can still work a public service and do the same
bro much love from portugal, love the content, great videos, but please dont start the porsche with the lights on the dashboard all on, waint until those that are not on while you driving go off then you can turn it on. keep doing amazing vids
@@MaxReisinger I bet you will be one of those who can one day be a key figure in bringing about a better education system (maybe in a university city called perspetopia??). In my own small way i am working on doing my part with my Science Fiction book series that i hope will take the nerd world by storm, but you are already well on your way to becoming a major global influencer in this decade; awesome Max! So awesome.
Thank you! I do hope I can use my voice and platform to bring about some form of change. It's great to see other people resonating and doing their own part as well- the book series sounds awesome! Send me an email when it goes live! Appreciate the kind words (:
@@MaxReisinger Will do. I'm still trying to find a book agent right now, but since I've been doing it awhile, chances are I'll find one soon. The series is called The Lord Vondor series
I think it’s a a good idea to conect both together learn in school versus outside cs your mind will growth more and u will be more wise but it’s also difficult to make balance between them
Hey Max, I really enjoyed this video. I am also a freshman in college but feel a similar "stuckness" that you alluded to. I have been reevaluating if my current school is really best for me. I put myself in a place where school is a 24/7 ordeal, and I have made all the things I love inaccessible. While I am appreciative of the opportunity to attend a well-regarded school (University of Rochester), I am ready to take the leap to attend a "worse" school that will allow me to live and learn outside of the confines of my school's campus. After this year I am going to transfer to the University of Vermont where I will be able to hike and cross-country ski, both of which bring me the happiness and fulfillment that I am lacking.
awesome video i loved watching and i really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on learning in the classroom and real life i by and large agree with you. your channel is one of my favorites ever :)
What else.
I think Max you are early age entrepreneur , I wonder how any founder of well running startup feels like you when they started there startup at your age Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences BTW I am also going to start a startup soon.😅
