1-that actually takes longer time 2-sometimes the screws are not 100% in tact so some screws would turn harder although they still haven't done much tension on the head. so it's definitely no recommendation unless you always have shiny new expensive drums to tune and you insist on not using your ears leaving you untrained for tuning drums which is a must learn skill for every drummer

i got new shiny drums that dont even have even feel in the lugs, even without a head installed, this evans drum key doesnt make sense at all i dont know why so many use this

1 its based off of tension 2 you can still use your ears and 3 hopefully you know many people use these without issue 😂im from 2 years in the future here to tell you they work fine its not a cheat code to tuning drums but they do what they advertise.

I'm a gear tech and not a drummer. I have great succes with the Evans Torque Key. It's brilliant and saves me a lot of time. I also have a digital TuneBot for fine tuning. I can't imagine going back to only using a regular drum key again.

What's the point of spending 30$ on a drum key if you still need to tap the lugs?

It makes a click dude ! Now you can piss you bandmates off even more than before by tuning your snare in the middle of a rehearsal ! Yeah... Pretty much the only positive point I found...

Because the tool you're looking for costs around $125-150. This at least gives you an even tension which then you can tune it to your desire tone.

I could never figure out where zero was so I abandoned it for the classic method unless I needed it for quick tuning jobs ie live or rehearsal ( but a spare pedal and snare is a must) I also use the lowest torque setting on my power driver with a bit so tensions are all the same then back them off by hand/key. I dont think this torque key is meant to be the be all and end all but is to assist to speed the process to a level where fine tuning by hand/key and ear begins.

What do you mean??
@brucevilla7490
@brucevilla7490 5 лет назад
I haven't used one but here's my assessment. That is basically a miniature click type torque wrench that mechanics use on cars and they are highly calibrated. If you drop a torque wrench it falls out of calibration and is worthless unless you get it re-calibrated. The fact that you are jumping all over the lugs and readjusting them for tension and equal sound means that it is not cranking to the exact same tension on each one, which means it is not calibrated very well. And if you drop your tuning key, which most drummers do constantly, it will become further useless.
@emasart

Maybe 8 pounds of torque at one end of the snare doesn't make the drum head sound the same as 8 pounds at the other end??? Maybe the drum heads don't work as the bolts of an engine do. Lol good point tho

This key is good for newer drums. Once when it gets older and the tension of the rods are not the same, it can be a hassle. ( some rods will turn smoothly and others my be tougher because of rust.) My advise is to get the tunebot.
@henrikrathje7698
@henrikrathje7698 5 лет назад
tunebot or drum dial are better.. drum dial is the best in my opinion.. because it does not require to strike the drum.. but the torque key gets you around 90-95% of the way.. fast.. and quiet.. until you fine tune by ear.. thats a great advantage over tune bot.. Drum dial is close to perfect.. and is absolutely quiet.. backstage and on stage thats simply the best.
@HR2635
@HR2635 4 года назад
@@williamperri3437 hmm.. I think so.. but both work.. I like that the drum dial has a metal guide to make sure you set the tool the same distance form the hoop.. but if you own the tama version that is fine too!.. some say Drum Dial is more accurate.. i dont know.. I think they are pretty similar in performance
@HR2635
@HR2635 4 года назад
@@williamperri3437 note that the NEW Tama version also has a ring around the tool.. which is actually better than drum dial!.. cause you dont need to move the metal thingy when moving a round the drum.. so if you are about to buy one, get the new Tama version www.gear4music.com/us/en/Drums-and-Percussion/Tama-Tension-Watch/25JK

the idea is good.. in real life.. it only works on drums where all lugs are operating equally well.. on my drums.. well.. all 8 kits and 30+ snare.. they are not.. The better way is to use Drum Dial that measures the tension of the head.. without tapping you kan get it to 95-98% perfect pitch.. and then fine tune with your ears (always necessary unless you are tuning high pitched marching snares).. it saves time .. and your band mates ears :-).. and you can in an emergency do it back stage without being a pain in the b***.. I prefer Drum Dial over TuneBot for instance because you can do it without hitting the heads.. and its much faster.

With all due respect, that's NOT the right way to use the key. The snare sounds horrible and the purpose of the key is to make the job easier, not longer. If you use the tool correctly, you'll have better results... Anyone who wants an accurate review, check Drumeo's demo here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5tISyonzcxA.html (That's the CORRECT way to tune a snare!)

This is such a theoretical view. Every drummer knows that each tension rod will tension differently in its lug, depending on differences in thread pitch, condition, roundness, and flatness of the hoop, not to mention the condition of the bearing edges and loads of other factors. So all you acheive with this gadget has nothing to do with the tension of the head at each lug. Gives you a misleading result at best, with zero help to your actual pitch contol. Do it by ear, and forget about rod tensions. Unless you just want to waste time, effort and money. It' a gadet you'll try once and quicky consign to the bottom of your "bits box". What I really want is a key that just fits snugly on the rod... Can't be that difficult, but after 40 years, I'm still looking!

Hi Enoc I speak for myself personally when I say I would have to agree to a certain degree as the true value of this specific Drum Key is highly dependent on the level of "upkeep" of a specific drum in as much as things like lugs. If a drum is looked after well and the lugs pretty smooth and consistent around the drum in question, this Torque Key (with a little getting used to) can get you to a desired sound fairly quickly especially if you are in a Gig situation and don't have much time for tweaking... Nothing really beats a controlled studio sound with time, a good ear and a good old fashion drum key :-) What is your quick tune tool of choice?
