I can remember first encountering an Eventide H9 in about 2015 - and seeing someone connect to it with a laptop. It's only really struck me that nearly 10 years on from the Eventide H9 launch, it's pretty difficult to find other pedals that have some of this capability? What do you think are the most "innovative" Effects Pedals around?

The hot knob as a big macro to control multiple parameter changes is a killer feature of this pedal. And all the algos are written to have things manipulated in real time without getting all zippery like many other pedals. Great way to morph smoothly between two flavors of a sound, or to dial up from light to heavy, etc. The whole thing comes alive.

There's never been a better time to buy an H9. There are so many on e-bay thanks to the H90 appearing. I think what put people off was that it's not easy to understand what it is. It's not a multi effect as it only really does one effect at a time, and if you want a single effct, why not buy a conventional stompbox? Where the H9 has really shone for me is as an addition to a modeller using midi to control it. I run a QC with an H9 and it's really everything I could need and more. The QC covers amps, cabs, most effects and the H9 adds any effect that I can imagine if the QC is missing it, or better versions of the ones on the QC. One of the things I love is the tricerachorus with the detune down. You can get huge Dimension like effects but without the loss of body to the tone that a Boss Dimension causes. Then there's the micropitch EVH thing, a great vintage sounding spring reverb and so much more. I love my H9 (all three of them - but I only really need one with the QC.) The only thing I haven't been able to recreate is the Strymon Cloud reverb. If you manage to recreate that on an H9, I'd love to know how!

I am *sooo* in tune with what you are sharing here. This is exactly how I use it live, as that 'extra sauce' or additional great effect that I can't support with my 'standard'' pedals. I so want to try it on my Moog Sub37 as well as this is that studio quality piece that is applicable to so many uses. And yes, absolutely - I do not own the Big Sky but 'Cloud' is also the only algorithm I am really wanting. If Strymon came out with just a Cloud pedal I would seriously look at it. I believe that the Meris LVX might get that sound and it would give me more effects I might want. One reason I don't consider too strongly pairing my H9 with a Stomp on my board is that I don't like running too many serial AD/DA's in the path. The H9 is pretty good with it's conversion, but I tend to pair it with analog dry-through pedals. It's why I traded in my SA Nemesis for a Collider. And yeah, I actually love the bluetooth connectivity angle and think it is implemented brilliantly and Eventide is a great company to work with if issues with updates etc. and it has been that gift that kept giving until it reached it's limit with the added HotSawZ, Tricerchorus as mentioned, Pitchfuzz, Harmadillo, and the other earilier adds after launch. My only little gripe is with the sequenced pitch shift effects - I would like full control over the notes. I am still discovering this pedal and no plan to replace it anytime soon.

@@trebleboost7 I use it for delay with my Moogs -- mother 32, DFAM, and grandmother and it is str8 fire. grandmother has spring reverb, 2 oscillators, noise, modulation, but the h9 stereo delay makes it level. its one of things that makes the track shine like gold and you almost never have to edit in post. I also just got the Moog matriarch which has builtin analog delay, so Im using it a bit less.

I bought the Max when it came out. loved all the updates. I bought the H90 the day it came out. Still using the H9 with the H90

I have one since 2015, and its an amazing piece of gear, great sounds for everthing you can imagine, guitars, vocal amazing on synths. Spacetimes is like 3 alg in one, chorus, delay and reverb. The fuzz sounds great as well. Great tool for soundesign I would like to see you doing more videos dialing some cool sounds. And the app makes it so easy to use.

I bought an H9 the year it came out. Within a year, I had a second and both have never left my board since. I even own the H9 algorithms and use them on my Mac. Eventide effects just has a certain character to their sounds which jives with my sense of good tone. I have an H90 on it’s way to me now and I still plan to keep one of my current H9’s on my board when it arrives. These units are just too damn versatile and the more the merrier.

The Blackhole Reverb alone is worth the price in this pedal.

Bought one in 2013 (Max'd out eventually), and a second (core) in 2014. Have used them, along with a Strymon Mobius as the centerpiece of my boards ever since. Especially in a switching system, they're just genius. Save a lot of real estate and provide huge flexibility and the on the fly options in the studio during larger sessions utilizing an iPad are phenomenal. Nowdays, I've generally gone to a smaller non-switching board and I love having one with the Barn3 Ox switch as the utility knife. Still holds up well...but certainly if I was new to this game, I'd scoop up an H90. (sites nicely next to my HX Stomp too for home recording)

How do you think the h90 / h9 compare to your HX stomp?

So, HX Stomp + H9 + Pirate Midi 4 is what I’m hearing the ultimate mini board would be lol

As some pedal companies are replicating shoegaze and dreampop rigs in pedal format recently, I think eventide was years ahead with the mangleverb. You should check it out and maybe compare it to the new catlinbread, obe, etc stuff! I've just integrated the h9 back onto my board but this time as a kill dry effects box and it's been better than ever! I didn't like the digital converters you have to use for trails and this solved it.

Glad to see another fan of the H9. I did a video showing some H9 sounds for acoustic guitar. Still surprises me that strymon seems to gain most of the video press (seems to monopolise the worship community from what my uneducated mind thinks). But most of the pros I ve seen seem to have the H9 on the board. Swiss knife of pedals. For me it’s a noooooo brainer. Nice video. Cool.

So the H9 is a Pitch Factor OR a Mod Factor OR a Time Factor OR a Space Reverb. You can just switch between these? Is that a correct description of this? Or are some of the effects stackable? And, as long as I am asking, the H90 is a couple of H9’s in one box (with a little extra)?

I had one for years that was fully loaded. I loved the effects and thought they were some of the best on the market. Unfortunately, I hated the interface and it didn't always play nice with my Stomp. That was one of the reasons I bought a Helix LT. I ended up giving the H9 to my son. No regrets and I still think the H9 effects are amazing. Just not for me.

Nice sounding pedal, but not enough control without menu diving for me. Sold it, don't miss it, and wouldn't trade either of my two EHX Memory Mans for one.

Happy New Year! great video. Liked and subscribed! I have 2 H9s on my pedalboard and they are phenomenal but I have a problem now: the H9 Control is no longer starting on my Android 13 phone and, as from the Eventide support forum, there should be a new beta version. Someone who downloaded it said that, with the new one, all the in-app stored presets get lost and that would be very bad for me. Has anyone experienced the problem and hopefully found a solution? Cheers!

Hi John are there sounds and others things the new H90 does that you couldn't reproduce with the helix? And if money wasn't an issue would it make sense to buy the H90 if you own a helix floor for example?

@trebleboost7

If you want to get sounds beyond Delay, then yes, for sure. It would cover much of the ground of the Timeline, BigSky, and Mobus, and then go beyond in it's own way. I really like the delays in the H9, and especially if you like the more studio sheen digital variety. But, it might not do the delay's you like in the Timeline exactly. Both very fine boxes. Check out the Source Audio stuff too. I am enjoying the Collider a lot. Have Volante too which is killer for tape delay but not so geared for live use in my opinion. I really want to try the Wampler MetaVerse. I am realizing I have a delay addiction.... addictio... addict... add.... a

Love mine - been running 2 for ages - still sound good - but you ned to dig into the settings to get the best out of it - the presets are not exacltly subtle! Tim Pierce did an interesting piece on the H9, too: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7MUTjLkCCaE.html

Have H9 - great sounds, but BT not that important for me, and I never liked the unintuitive physical interface (app not much better in many ways). What similar had held up as well?: My L6 M5 - poor man's H9 - still pretty good

None of those effects sounds that usable in a normal context. I'd love to hear some standard stereo reverb see if it can compete with helix

The verbs are still a bit better than the helix, except maybe the plate. And the delays are much better.

Nah, it was frustrating to use. Sounding good is just not enough in 2022. Sold mine years ago, never missed it. No interest in the H90 either.

You probably would have been helped if the default presets were more common. So many need to be tweaked to be used or simplified I find and even though I love it do struggle a bit sometimes.
