According to the Larrin's charpy toughness test, the LC200n/Z-finit has much higher toughness than cruwear due to the fine grain structure. So yeah, it might be one of the best steel our there.

Usually the etched spyderco logo gets a bit of rust on your tests, even on normally rust resistant knives. It's really impressive that it essentially has no corrosion on it.
@phillipnunya6793
@phillipnunya6793 4 года назад
I think LC200N would be awesome for combat knives (not crowbars). It has fairly good edge retention, fairly good toughness, and awesome corrosion resistance. It will hold it's edge rather than rusting it away, and can be taken into pretty much any environment.

That knife is ultimately designed by Lance for kayak fishing (very specific for that shore, gutting fish, filleting, etc). When he designed it never was meant for bushcrafting purposes nor survivalist use, that’s why the thinner handle. I have one and it’s the perfect jack of all trades(in my opinion), I use it as a necker , modified it a little bit, cut the handle by the lanyard hole and on the blade I drop pointed it a little bit too , at the end it came up one inch shorter, but for my use, it became the best neck knife that I own overall (and I have more than a hundred neck knives to compare it with) Great review mate 👍👍👍 God bless you!!!!

Very curious about the toughness of this steel. If it's not chippy then you have to call it the best stuff going. LC200N in a proper bushcraft pattern next please.
@antimatter4733
@antimatter4733 5 лет назад
I don't think this is the best bushcraft steel. You don't need that much corrosion resistance which ends up costing you toughness and edge retention.
@antimatter4733
@antimatter4733 5 лет назад
@David Martin Portmann rolling vs chipping has more to do with how hard you take the steel than anything else. I don't think it would be tougher than m390 at the same edge retention
@antimatter4733
@antimatter4733 5 лет назад
@David Martin Portmann that doesn't make sense, at a lower hardness that would give m390 the same edge retention it would be more tough than lc200n while basically being just as corrosion resistant. At the same hardness m390 is probably still tougher just because it's has a better grain structure due to its production (powdered steel vs electroslag remelting) and because it has less free chromium because despite having more chromium a lot more is tied up in carbides which doesn't cause brittleness like free chromium. Unless you're bushcrafting in pools of acid m390 is superior in every way
@antimatter4733
@antimatter4733 5 лет назад
@David Martin Portmann you're quite misinformed when it comes to metallurgy. Free chromium creates brittleness, chromium carbides do not. M390 is not a brittle steel. It's more than tough enough for any bushcrafting you can do if heat treated correctly. Also you won't always have the opportunity to oil your knife and keep it clean. In that case a stainless steel is definitely superior. Running a steel at a lower hardness does not decrease it's corrosion resistance. As your last sentence basically proves. You'd have to really mess up a heat treatment to change the corrosion resistance of any steel. The hardness only trades off between toughness and edge retention.
@austinfox4130
@austinfox4130 5 лет назад
I don't know that the comparison holds anyway; M390 is at its best around 62-64 HRC, but from what I've heard LC200N is really difficult to get harder than 61 HRC. I may be remembering wrong though.

I'll definitely be getting this knife; my only subjective minor issue is I really don't like sheaths where the blade rides so high into the ribs, but I'm thinking I can find some type of workaround once it's in-hand. One thing you didn't test the corrosion factor with however (in reference to your last video) is you should have soaked it in a bowl of the anti-Benchmade crowds' tears...then again it could be so caustic the blade would just vaporize...nevermind.

First Spyderco to get my attention. The Sandrin Torino is my EDC because the choil, jimping and length make it PERFECT for all the positions I use skinning hogs and deer as well as the uses it covers in daily life. However I've been looking for a fixed blade of slender(ish) profile as a potential boot or sling or strap knife something that could baton and will definitely suffer the elements. this could be the one. Thanks!

Easily one of the best companion blades out there in terms of overall design. It’s damn near perfect in size and shape. Highlights for me are the deep choil and sleek taco style sheath. The blade carries so comfortably! In a perfect world the spidey hole wouldn’t be there and the handle would be screwed on instead of glued on but those are the only 2 things I can even think of that I would like to see changed.

They always have to put that hole on everything they make. On folders, it makes sense as the hole assists in opening but on a fixed blade? useless. Worse than useless since that hole will only accumulate crap. I get the brand recognition and all that but I DON"T need a dumb useless hole on a fixed blade.

@thefishrustler3893 5 лет назад
Hi bp69 . The large ricasso area is a functional part of the design. One of my most common grips for detail work is to loosely hold the knife “choked up” with the forefinger on the spine and the middle finger resting in front of the guard. Having the plunge line a bit further forward allows one to rest their middle finger there comfortably and safely in that grip. It is a design feature that may not appeal to everyone but I just thought I would explain why it looks that way and that it wasn’t made that way by accident. 👍🏼🙏🏼
