So when this film was made, Sam Raimi had two close friends, you may know them, Joel & Ethan Coen. They needed help getting their first film ‘Blood Simple’ financed. So Raimi and Bruce Campbell filmed an iconic scene from Blood Simple as a small trailer and the Coens took it door to door and showed people! It’s a phenomenal film and should definitely be added to your list!!

The second movie is basically a larger budget, "slapstick horror" remake of the first. It is about 1000% of the insanity of the first movie. Super gory and hammy and hilarious. Imagine if the Three Stooges starred in a gory R-rated horror movie.

I will never understand people who say to skip Evil Dead 1 and to start the series with Evil Dead 2, it just doesn't make sense. Evil Dead 2 is NOT a remake, do not be fooled by the recap at the start of it. Bruce Campbell himself said the best way to start 2 is at the part with the Evil entity moving through the woods and hits Ash.
@ChrisMathers3501

I don't normally watch behind-the-scenes commentaries, but apparently Evil Dead had the exact opposite problems that the case of Texas Chainsaw Massacre faced. In TCM it was so goddamn hot, half of them were masked up head to toe, the heat caused the food to rot and stink, and the heat boiled Gunner Hansen's brain so bad that he was beginning to think that he really WAS Leatherface, and that he really WAS supposed to kill the chick. Also the part where they cut her finger so the old guy could drink her blood, they slipped and actually did cut her. In Evil Dead, it was so cold, and the corn syrup they were using for blood made it even colder. Nobody had any winter clothing and it got even colder than they had called for. By the time it was over they were feeding pieces of the cabin itself into the fire for heat. Also Sam Raimi would go around beating the actors with a stick and yelling "Act harder!" The funniest thing ever though was how they filmed the last scene. Apparently to get the POV shot, Sam Raimi grabbed a camera, hopped on a motorcycle, plowed through the cabin and barreled into Bruce Campbell's chest so hard he broke a rib or two.

Yes, yes, yes. There are so many awesome B-movies from the 80s, when B-movies still showed up in theaters and didn't go straight to DVD. Everything from the "Ernst" franchise to the "Critters" franchise. Sure they were cheap and derivative. But like "The Evil Dead," B-movies are where great filmakers and actors cut their teeth.

It’s funny, there was no actual basement at the cabin .. they just dug a hole in the ground, with a small set of stairs for the actors to walk down & duck their heads. The basement was a combination of Sam’s parents basement and I believe producer Rob Tapert’s. But the remainder of the film was actually filmed, on location at a dirty and deserted cabin that they were lucky enough to actually just discover out it the woods .. apparently it was so dirty, the floors were literally covered in cow dung. Which they first had to shovel & clean out, before production could start filming.

Actually Sam Remi and Bruce Campbell became famous because of the franchise of Evil Dead. The reason for Evil Dead 2 is what happened to Ash's sister in the woods in Evil Dead 1.

Samantha looked so p**sed when Scottie made Ash jump.. I also don't think I've heard her scream as much as in this viewing. Well done for putting yourselves through that - I wasn't fully prepared for it when I first saw it back in the day and you both have my sympathy.. lol. I hope it hasn't given you nightmares man. This movie really was an exercise in taking everything up to 1981 to excess and then how to go viral even before the mainstream internet. As you say, when you step away from the sheer audacity of it, the creative choices which truly define Sam Raimi's style are very evident, from this lowest budget flick to the highest ones such as Spiderman. As an aside I always look at the first girl possession as an utterly brilliant performance. When she gets up with the pencil, she performs a kind of rag doll move which is soooo good as a way to convey possession.
@monsterlair
@monsterlair 2 года назад
That was an AMAZING reaction! I had an absolute blast. And really, you're through the worst of it now. Evil Dead II is kind of a slapstick movie rather than a horror. Raimi has always been more interested in entertaining his audience than scaring them. Really, this movie owes so much to Stephen King, who saw it at the Cannes film market and then wrote a review of it. Having a Stephen King quote ("THE MOST FEROCIOUSLY ORIGINAL HORROR FILM OF THE YEAR") on the poster for your low budget indie horror, well... Ka-ching!

You need to see Evil Dead 2. It's a perfect mix of horror and comedy and this is the one where Ash becomes a badass. Also remember - first 15 minutes of Evil Dead 2 is kinda like a remake of the plot of the first movie. They could not use the scenes from ED1 because of copyright issues. The sequel plot starts at the moment Ash gets attacked by the unseen demon, like the ending of ED1
@Deadite_Scholar
@Deadite_Scholar 2 года назад
Despite what some may say in the comments, Evil Dead 2 is definitely a sequel. There is a brief, seven minute recap at the beginning of the film, featuring all new footage, omitting every character except Ash and Linda that may seem confusing at first. This is purely a rights issue since Sam Raimi could not obtain the rights to the footage of the first film. But the recap ends exactly where Evil Dead 1 does, and immediately following, the movie picks up right where the first leaves off.

Evil Dead 2 was a soft remake, Raimi decided to mix the humor & horror in the second movie. What I remember hearing was that Raimi wanted to make it as horrifying as possible but Bruce Campbell was so likable, the audience back then were upset with Ash presumably being killed at the end. So he started over. Evil Dead 2 & Army of Darkness are awesome Samantha, watch 'em. Lol ;)

Another great director who started out with gory horror is the great Peter Jackson. Long before his "Lord of the Rings" classics, he started out very similarly to Sam Raimi by filming the gorefest "Bad Taste" (1987). It starred his friends in the lead roles, he also has a main acting role, and it was filmed at weekends and took 4 years to complete. He then made a bigger budget horror film named "Braindead" (Dead Alive in the US) in 1992 which is even gorier than the Evil Dead, it's truly insane. Inbetween these two gory horror classics, Jackson made "Meet the Feebles" (1989). An utterly bizarre and one of a kind film, imagine an X-rated Muppet movie. Yes, it's totally out-there.

I am so happy you are watching this series. I too started with #3 and have loved these movies ever since. Its tough to say which is better, 1 or 2 as they are each unique yet basicly the same movie. When they made ED2 they did not have the rights to the first movie so they did a basic recap of ED1 in the first 10 or 15 min of ED2, then it becomes its own film. Sam wanted to make a horror film and any comedy elements were accidental. In ED2 they leaned into the comedy more and by ED3 they just had fun with it. ED2 is where we get all cool and legendary Ash.If you watch closely in ED2 in one scene when Ash goes into the shed you can see Freddys glove hanging over the door from A nightmare on Elm Street which one of the props people "borrowed" from the set. Thats why in the first Elm street Nancy is watching Evil Dead in one scene. A running joke between Sam and Wes.

🤭👌❤ In one of the scenes you can see a torn poster of the movie The Hills Have Eyes based on a true story directed by Wes Craven "milk and oatmeal" 🤫🤣

In Quebec we had a special rating, which they slapped onto this title "No one under 14 allowed." So, being 13, I lied and the ticket booth didn't verify. It's impossible to overstate the experience of seeing this in 1981 - only "cult" movies had ever gone so far into sadism towards the audience (10 000 MANIACS and I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE comes to mind) which, in those days when not even half the population even had a VHS machine, made them nearly impossible to catch. Me and my brother stayed for a second viewing in a row. That was a bad idea. I had bad dreams for days . . . What works for me is precisely the low-fi aspect of it all. It has a grittiness that no CGI can ever match.

Sam Raimi built his entire career off of dumping shit on Bruce Campbell.

Guys watch Evil Dead 2. Much more fun. Bruce Campbell really shines as Ash and it is less gross and much funnier. The second film is where Ash gets with his chainsaw in a very good way!!!
