17:03 - The movie was filmed in a real-life abandoned cabin. The property's owner granted the production crew to lease the cabin, under the condition that any modifications made for filming were to be undone. The crew kept their promise, and the only thing that remained in the cabin was the fireplace that was specifically built for the film. The cabin did not actually have a cellar. Most of the cellar scenes were filmed in the stone cellar of a farmhouse owned by producer Rob Tapert's family in Marshall, Michigan. The last room of the cellar was actually Sam Raimi's garage. The cabin was located in the forest outside the small town of Morristown, Tennessee before it burnt down. To this day, the exact circumstances of the fire are unknown. Sam Raimi claimed that he burned it down himself after filming, because he believed that the cabin was haunted. However, according to other sources, it burned down years after the film was made, because teenagers illegally went to the cabin and accidentally set it on fire while camping outside of it. Today, the only remaining part of the structure is the fireplace that was specifically built for the film. Fans have managed to make their way out to where the cabin once stood, the hole in the ground dug for the cellar entryway that Cheryl is seen standing in still being there and most of the fireplace still standing (fans over the years have broken off stones of it for mementos, with even some of them getting the actors to sign them).

This is my favourite horror movie. The effects, the sound design, the camera work, and Baby Bruce. Linda's iconic "We're gonna get you.." is on par with Nightmare on Elm Street's "1, 2, Freddy's coming for you..". The fact this was basically a low-budget student film is astonishing, considering its execution and cultural impact on the film industry, creating the whole "cabin in the woods" horror genre. Part 2 (Dead by Dawn) and 3 (Army of Darkness) are also great cult classics. FYI, Part 2 has a 10 minute recap of part 1 as the opening, but due to Sam Raimi not having rights to footage from the 1st film, they had to reshoot, recast, and simplify the storyline so people who hadn't seen it could catch up. So that will assuage your confusion. I make sense of it by thinking of it as Ash having a nightmare about the events of the first film (up until he wakes up in part 2 in the chair), and dreams are often not a faithful retelling of events. The fact that Ash's mind is also greatly impacted makes him a semi-unreliable narrator, so that works too. Ash is one of the best final girls ever. Imagine having to kill your best friend, sister, and girlfriend? His character development throughout the franchise is iconic.

so, i have seen the second one which i filmed a week ago, i did not know this information at the time and i spent the entire movie confused and angry at the film. however, upon reading this comment, i now feel stupid about it

@mazanreacts you are not alone. It confuses everyone, even back then upon release. Without the internet, and only things like horror magazines Fangoria (1st published 1979), information was scarce about any behind the scenes or production information for films. But after multiple rewatches (this was the dawn of the era of VHS - home video movie hire), we sort of put 2 and 2 together. I didn't have anything confirmed until YEARS later. It's also a trend with this series, so it became more obvious with 1992's part 3 also being a retconned/unreliable narrator opening.

So heads-up on evil dead 2, due to rights issues, the 1st 20-ish minutes are a quick and dirty remake to get to the point that the 1st ended on. Evil dead 2 is also horror/comedy, army of darkness and the ash vs evil dead series are nearly pure comedy. All of it is an amazing campy good time though

While there are 1000s of great horror films, I've compiled an essential viewing list of genre-creating/defining, iconic, impactful horror films in pop culture. I'm talking the BIG films that everyone on the street knew about. These films created the horror templates, inform every other horror film/trope, and mostly spawned franchises. If you start with these, every other horror film will fall into place. 1961 Psycho 1968 Rosemary's Baby 1968 Night of the Living Dead 1972 Deliverance 1973 The Exorcist 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1975 Jaws 1976 The Omen 1978 Halloween 1979 Alien 1980 Friday the 13th 1981 The Evil Dead 1982 Poltergiest 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street 1996 Scream 1999 The Blair Witch Project 2004 Saw 2007 Paranormal Activity Plus one of my personal favourites: The Haunting 1963 (was adapted into the netflix series House on Haunted Hill)
