It's partially the architects fault for building ugly places to live in. It's also, as you say, the people who live there. If they don't own the houses they live in, if they have no stake in it and the thing is a hideous monstrosity anyway, what do they care if it goes to crap?

Same I've lived in a few in China, great safe communities. When my British family visited they were worried, they immediately associate high rises with crime and poverty and sneered at it, but eventually they realised it's ordinary and very convenient. The problem is entirely cultural and social on behalf of the British government deciding to basically put problem families all into the same buildings. As a teacher now, it's pretty obvious when you have problem kids you don't just group them all together, you mix them with the normal kids to normalise and improve their behaviour. If you group the horrible kids together, you get one giant class of horrible kids who make each other more horrible and everyone hates teaching that class (which some dumb schools do) and the UK did that with social high rises... which is further encouraged by them being cheaper. My point is it's not a problem inherent to a block of flats, it's the way the UK used them.

Newbuilds are absolutely tiny. My mate had bought a newbuild that cost about the same as mine which is 80s ish. His house is litterally half the size of mine with worse insulation and quality. Absolute trash being pumped out by the three big construction companies.

Builders are shite now. Pump and dump developers etc. I miss solid brickwork. It's beautiful and it lasts. The buildings behind my place are 200 years old and standing strong. Gorgeous blue stone foundation and red and yellow brickwork. Stunning arches etc. This part of Melbourne feels like Manchester or Stoke. I grew up in a bizarre estate in the UK called Southgate. It looked like soviet Europe. Pure Brutalism. Bentilee in Stoke is a massive estate.

Honestly, ithey are still the same in Hungary to this day. Pretty safe, full of families, with maybe minor gangs in the bigger cities. The apartment blocs are relatively well kept and taken care of, though with some exceptions. Then again, they haven't seen mass immigration...

Its a shame landlords like this give the rest of them a bad rep, my parents own 2 ex council houses which we rent out to people on universal credit, and honestly they trash the places, we try to keep them up to standard but it ends up costing us far more money than the actual rent. A lot of the people who dont have to pay for rent with their own money just dont give a fuck so i see why most landlords stop bothering. We cant even evict them to sell the houses because the council is preventing us.

There aren't really any council estates anymore. They were all transferred to the control of housing associations (often against the wishes of the residents via dodgy ballots) which suited the then Labour government because Gordon Brown was trying to have his cake and eat it by promising investment while also saving money. The trick was that councils didn't pay VAT but housing associations did so if the government promises to invest £1bn or however much in public housing, they know they're getting a sixth of it back straight away in VAT payments.

You might get through the list quicker than you think, it only took me a year on grounds of overcrowding. A friend of mine also only went through it in a year. I feel like this 10 year Que is said more to deter people from getting on it. Universal Credit also will top up your income to help with rent. Say you have £1400 rent, + your personal allowance (like 360) then you're eligible for £1760 UC minus 55p for every pound you earn. If you earn £1500 a month, that would be £825 detracted, so you would still be eligible for £935 from universal credit to help you. Look into these options, you won't have to do weekly meetings with Universal credit either as long as you earn over £900 a month.

And as for compulsory purchase, I lived on the route of a controversial road scheme. The government offered 90% of market value under the CPO. I had elderly neighbours one side whose house was flattened and the lady died very soon after moving. The other was an elderly lady looking after her granddaughter. They never demolished her house or ours. The academic and the health professional who then moved in on short term let tenancy then were able to buy the property, I don't know for how much but I do know the housing association tenant in the house where I lived was first offered £35k to buy his large 3bed terrace.In around 1998 (he delayed and it went up to £45k) .Those houses are about £850k now. I think about those ladies still.

Houses are unaffordable because there's wildly excessive demand for them. You can't keep rapidly growing the population of what is already the most densely populated country in Europe (England) and the most densely populated major European economy (UK) without prices spiralling out of control. You also can't build your way out of a problem when what little green space is being rapidly destroyed, infrastructure can't possibly keep up (where does the water come from, etc?) and people's quality of life continues to decline.

It didn’t improve their situation. I’ve not seen them since. Yet somehow, despite all the chaos on this road, they also decided it would be a great idea to move the primary school here in the 80s as well. It borders the flats which house the crackheads. I’m not lying, the fence literally borders the field. I remember playing in the summer in the fresh cut grass, and finding a crack pipe. 4 years old was never so good! I’ve just seen nothing but shite since I was born and I’m close to giving up lol.

I Disagree you can see brutalist architecture in pretty much every city across Europe. These structures were mainly developed post war for similar reasons described in this video. And well, they were very cheap. They are on the outskirts of Paris, Amsterdam, Rome etc. today there are typically occupied by immigrants. Speaking of immigrants, while this video was incredibly well made, i was suprised that immigration was not referenced at all, specifically within the 70s and 80s in Britain. @@HShango I'd be fascinated to hear any European, or any Brit, tell us why we don't see this being said by any of them? Well, apart from, it seems, myself? I'd expect to read thousands saying this? As when you're speaking the truth, no matter if you're the only one speaking the truth?, you'll always be right, while the rest, (regardless of how many), will always be wrong. And the only real truth today is, it's the Americans themselves who, really do need to learn, and more importantly they all need to understand, that no matter where anyone's loyalty may lie?, that we, (the people), never support wrong over right, but we should always be willing, and prepared, to stand up, and fight for, right, over wrong! The Americans completely misunderstand this today, and it's driving us all to Nuclear war. These Americans really do believe, that supporting your own country, (no matter what), is the patriotic thing to do. Really, quite unbelievably, this is exactly what many of them believe! Only, that's so far from patriotism, It's not even close, but it is the complete opposite of patriotism, it's treason, and it's outright treachery! So, why do we see so many Americans only being traitors against themselves, and against Europe? It really can only be, because, they don't actually know, or understand what patriotism actually is! To the rest of the world, when, and if, we ever found out that our own government was breaking International law, (doing illegal things against another country and their people), then being 100% (against) our own country/government is known throughout the entire world, as being patriotic! (Well, apart from the USA). No patriot, would ever support his own country, (if he ever knew his own country was doing illegal wrongs against another country and their people), because doing so, would be, in effect, no different from supporting the corruption, supporting the terrorism, supporting the brutal murder of innocent people, and supporting their own government breaking International law! And that's no different from supporting your very own country's demise! - And that's known as treachery, not patriotism! This enormous mistake, they all continue to make, also comes down to morals, ethics, and a reasonable education, as surely, we all understand right from wrong, above all else?, and we should also understand the importance of truth, and only ever want to hear the truth! Well, the undeniable truth, is, that it's the American people themselves, who are all at fault, and responsible for all of these troubles today, as I'll explain (though I shouldn't need too, we should all know and understand this). In 2015, Russia exposed the US government (to the American people), and to the entire world, for supporting terrorists in Syria! And that forced the US government, (to admit to the American people) and admit to the whole world, they had recruited - trained - armed - supplied - protected - paid - and used, brutal terrorists, the “Free Syria Army”, in Syria, (sorry, the Americans like to use the term "moderate" head chopping so-called rebels, and it's only terrorists, to the rest of this world, pardon me, my mistake). Yet, not one of them has ever condemned it, or done the right thing, and stood up against it, or even protested against it, let alone start to demand it stops, (as every other society on earth, would be doing, if any of our governments were forced to admit what the USA admitted). We'd all be out on the streets in the millions, bringing our countries to a standstill, if any of our governments had admitted what the US government did. So, It just seems, that today, these Americans must feel that's below them all, (or something just as self-righteous, cowardly, and ignorant). I guess, those lives, just don't matter? And far from seeing, anyone of them, protest against it? What is the reality, and what have we all really seen, (since they all found that out)? We've seen millions of them, cheering their criminal presidents, and we've seen millions of them chanting USA USA USA, (just like the Nazi's of the 30s). And we have never seen a single American stand up against it, let alone, start to demand it stops, why not? This really does need to be answered? 2018... Teresa May announces British strikes on Syria, within 3 hours, literally hundreds of thousands of people are stood outside Parliament protesting against it. 2018, Emmanuel Macron announces French strikes on Syria, later that evening in Paris, hundreds of thousands of people are protesting against it. 2015, Russia exposes the USA to the American people and the entire world for supporting and supplying terrorists in Syria, and still, 9 years later, man! Not one American has even condemned it, let alone stood up and protested against it! These people really don't even seem to know, or understand, that the only society we've ever seen do this before, (throughout modern history), an entire society not even bother to stand up and protest against their own government's admitted criminal murder and killing of innocent people, (once the people found out), was indeed, Nazi Germany 1933-1945! That's the only time in modern history, the people of any society, have done (or not done), what these Americans are today. They clearly, and without any doubt whatsoever, have no morals, and as for any kind of understanding of ethics?, you're joking, they'd all need to look up what ethics are! Also, this is just another truth! Just another truth, that seems to be forgotten by all of them today, but what was the most asked question, after WW2, a question asked all the way into the early 1980s? "Why did the German people do nothing"? What's worse, is, that we can understand today, why the German people did what they did, they were starving to death with the harshness of the Versailles treaty, and dying in large numbers during the great depression, so quite naturally, they'd of supported absolutely anything that offered them hope! These Americans have absolutely no such excuse! And this is the biggest problem facing the rest of us, in this world today, it is the biggest problem, the rest of us, have ever faced in our lifetimes! Truth will always come out, and it must always be said, and that truth today, is, It's the American people themselves, who are all responsible for all of this trouble today -- Obviously, because it's up to all of them, to stand up and start demanding their criminal government stops all of this! Nobody else can do that, only they can! But the huge problem we all have, and we all face, today, is, that none of these Americans will do a thing. Even basic principles seem to elude these people today! Principles like, the (people) of any society, only ever need to remember, that the easiest way to figure out the right from the wrong in any likely oncoming, or future war scenario, is to just ask yourself what you'd be fighting for? Because it's the answer to that question, that should always be showing you, whose right, and whose wrong. For example, if the Americans just asked themselves, that if the USA went to war against either Russia or China, what would they be fighting for? And then just ask themselves what the Russians, or the Chinese, would be fighting for? They'd come to find, that both the Russians and the Chinese, would be fighting for their own country's freedom! While the Americans would only be fighting for attempted American global tyranny, (and that's no different from Nazi Tyranny). How Ironic! That's what they're all, in effect, supporting today, and if they really can't see that?, well all I can say to that, is, the Nazis were just like that, and they all claimed they couldn't see it either! The Americans will all be seen by history, as the Axis powers, trying for American Tyranny over the world. While the Russians, the Chinese, and much of the rest of the world, will be seen by history as the allied powers, fighting against this clear attempted American tyranny, and fighting for their own freedom. But tell us, will it be all the Americans paying for their own lack of morals, their own lack of ethics, their own stupidity, that sees them, once again, swallowing dangerous, yet remedial propaganda claims, and really obvious lies? Or will it actually be, all of Europe and the UK, who are, without doubt, going to pay for it, well? Who? Suicidal comes to mind. Make of that, what you will, but again, it's just more of that good old thing known as, the truth, honesty, and the reality.

But yes for me it's easy because I have something way worse to compare it. For you British people all that you have here is great well except the weather and it's again perfectly normal to take it for granted.
