The Evil Horde Slime Pit was so incredible. I remember getting this as a kid at Kay Bee Toys on clearance and it was one of my top He-Man toys ever. I would bash it with my GI Joes as a Cobra torture device as well......I miss those days, thanks for the memories!

It's a bit of a meme for Gen X to brag about what great toys and shows we grew up on, but Masters of the Universe was the pinnacle for overall quality and imagination. The 80's was truly a golden age for children.

The hype surrounding The Evil Horde was immense. They lived up to the hype too!

Fantastic video Tony! While I'm not a huge MOTU fan I still found this video very interesting. Really liked the cobwebbing in the background, definitely added to the theme of this group!

My dad's favorite villain by far was Hordak. He was fortunate to receive the first release horde figures and the Fright Zone for Christmas. But he was always disappointed by the horde trooper, since he only got to town every few months it was always sold out. (Joys of living in rural America in the 80s) My favorite thing about the MOTU toy line (other than dad letting younger me play with them) is watching dad's face light up watching the cartoon episodes on Saturday morning dvd binges.

Great story, my dad once back in the day stuck my LEECH toy to his forehead while showing off after getting home from the pub. He left it on a bit long, and had a huge red round lump there for about 3 days.

I loved my Modulok, I'd say he was my favorite figure of the entire line, or at least top 5. But I was a kid super into Lego, Capsela, Zaks, Popples, and later K'Nex, basically any kind of building toy that snapped together, I had some pieces of a set if not a collection, so it was right up my alley. I recall the plastic being difficult to snap together, but not overly so, it was tough enough you could bang them on concrete if you had to, to pop a joint in. And while he lacks a Horde symbol, that just made him fit into any other adventure as a monster, so he could be fighting the Ghostbusters (Real or Filmation) just as easily as the Super Friends or the heroes of Star Wars, it was a huge range of figures at that scale and we all just mixed and matched as we liked.

I’m very fond of Modulok, though I must say it’s likely because he’s the only initial Horde figure that I never had. I eventually corrected this by picking up his Classics update.

Excellent video Tony. I was born in 1971 but didn't have many MOTU figures. I've begun collecting the Origins line but I really enjoy your videos on the vintage MOTU stuff.

I had Modulok as a kid and LOVED it! I also remember getting the playset for Christmas.

As a kid I was blessed to have many Masters of the Universe figures. I had the majority of the Horde toys including the base.

Thanks for posting this, it's a great video. It looks like I dropped He-man in 1986 as I have some horde soldiers, the first 4, modiloc, few horde soldiers, Dragstor, and multibot, but I have never seen the next years releases before.

Modulok was awesome, got him for my birthday. I credit this toy with my superior strength development as a boy.

As a kid and even today when I see the initial Evil Horde figures displayed next to each other I always kind of see the classic Universal Monsters. I wonder if the designers at Mattel in the 80s were inspired by them when designing the Evil Horde. Great video as always Tony.

I wish in the She-Ra show that the Horde went to Eternia way more, I thought in the beginning that it would happen , all we saw was the Etheria Heroes in Eternia for all ofe one Minute at the start of the Christmas special and Hordak at the memory portion of the secret of the Sword. great Video anyway, had those first Horde figures myself, thank you for your attention to them.

I remember getting the Fright Zone for my 6th birthday back in 1986 happy days !

Loved the Horde faction! Universal monsters meet MOTU. My favorites are Mosquitor, Leech, Hordak. Then Grizzlor & Modulok(in the toon he originally worked for Skeletor). Also loved Monstroid. Lunataks in Thundercats were like the Horde for that series. Trap Jaw is my favorite character of all too.

Mantenna was one of the most durable figures. Always enjoyed playing with him.

Always love your well produced documentaries on various parts of toylines. You are where I come tp broaden my knowledge on these lines, as I missed out on these toys as a child. Origins has helped me get the feel of the era at a reasonable price, however I do lacl knowledge of some of the figires from the line I have chosen, Mantenna being the perfect example.

From the original Evil Horde collection I think Modulok was the one who I liked the best. Mostly due to the endless ways to play assemble him. A very thought out toy. The robot counterpart Multibot paried really well with him

The evil horde and the battle damage he man and skeletor are the figured I have actual memories of getting because I was a little older by then. I had all of the classic figures and castle Grayskull but those were among the toys that I remember always just having because I was so young. Great video!

The Evil Horde, alongside with The Snake Men, were amongst my favorite MOTU figures growing up and, more often than not, I favored them as villains over Skeletor and his Evil Warriors. I was lucky enough to have most of The Evil Horde figures back then, with the exception of Modulok, Multi-Bot and the 2 Hordak variants (Hurricane and Buzzsaw); as well as having both The Fright Zone and The Snake Pit. Great video as always, Tony; it brought back some good memories of simpler (better) times.

I was never into He man as a boy. But as a adult I really enjoy the design and all the features put into the figures and I am also checking out the 1980s Filmation cartoon too.

Fantastic retrospective. I thought I knew all about the Horde, but there were a few toys here I've never seen before. I loved the atmosphere of the Fright Zone, partly because of the box art. The puppet monster reminded me of the local legend of the Lambton Worm.

I still have my original Leech with crossbow, absolutely love him. I picked up Origins Hordak. Always reminds me of Christmas 1980s watching the He man She Ra Christmas special.

I have collected since '82 (with a hiatus during New Adventures) and as a kid The Evil Horde quickly became my favourite team. They were big and imposing and seemed to come out of nowhere with a totally new look. Leech is still my second favourite character (not strictly the toy, but in art, sculpts, etc) and my number one favourite character since 1983 is still Trap Jaw, so it's always cool to see others who hold him dear to their hearts. I love your videos and obviously found you by your MotU videos, but learning of other lines from your videos is so enjoyable. As a kid we had to make difficult choices as to which line to mainly dedicate ourselves to. I stopped collecting Star Wars when MotU came out. But I was also intrigued by Transformers, Dino Riders and Insectoids among others. Thanks for another great video mate! PS: I agree, Mantisaur was the king of the steeds and one hell of a memorable toy in the line's declining years.

I got into MOTU in 85 so many cool guys like Stinkor Syklone Twobad Spikor then they released The Evil Horde I remember thinking these guys were mindblowing and thought that an evil guy against the hero and the main evil guy Skeletor was really clever it really blew the boundaries of just Heroic vs Evil. Heman teaming up with his hated enemy Skeletor against Hordak was a really cool spin on MOTU, Cool how GI Joe had a similar arc ie Destro/Hordak and Zartan/King Hiss... Awesome Tony 👌

I remember seeing the commercial for the first time introducing this group. I had to have them when I was a kid. My Mom got me Grizzlor and Mantania. I asked for Hordak and I was told no for some reason. I never cared for Leech. My original Grizzlor is still in good shape with all of his hair and never had to replace his rubber bands in his legs. The same with Mantania. I thought Fright Zone was lame. I also had the Slime Pit. I thought my Mom would fight me over this but she let me have it telling me not to put Grizzlor in it because of his fur and not slime figures in the house. Memories lol...........

I had forgotten just how MUCH I loved some MOTU before I was like 8 .. but for SUUUUURE the Evil Horde ALWAYS had better villains .. I like how they were for better or worse She Ra villains they still packaged them just as the Evil Horde so the boys still bought the shit out of them to fight the He Man figures . I got into transformers and never looked back after that but the older I get the more nostalgic I get for my first real toy love MOTU. One of the best Christmas’ I ever had was the year I got the fright zone and the slime pit. Didn’t know how good I had it back then. Makes me miss my dad 100%

Tony, thanks for another great video. Generally speaking, I've always considered the first two years of He-Man figures to be the best ones of the line. I passed on the Horde when I was a kid, but they've grown on me over the years, and I'm now happy to own them. If anyone is a big Hordak fan, I recommend the DC Comics He-Man series from the 2010's. He's a very terrifying and powerful villain in that story.

I'll never forget the first time I seen the Horde figures in their first commercial. I thought they were cool. I eventually got the first five. The Snake Men were cool too.

I look forward to the day a 3d printed show accurate Fright Zone will exist. Among all of the backgrounds and title cards in the cartoon the image of the Fright Zone actually looks frightening.

Mattel actually had a full size version of the Slime Pit for a promotion at Universal Studios, along with actors dressed as He-Man and Skeletor. (I don't remember if Hordak was there, as only He-Man and Skeletor are in the photo my parents took.) Kids got a free Man-E-Faces that they could get autographed by He-Man and Skeletor, and that's when I started getting into the toys. I had Mosquitor, but a lot of these later guys I don't remember at all, like Dragstor and Multibot. The Modulok I had as a kid did not have the problem that yours had, so I guess they really did fix it.

Mosquitor's head reminds me very much of the alien resistance fighter "Nemesis the Warlock", from the comics of the same name in the legendary british magazine 2000.A.D.

I had the Slime Pit as a kid, but I never poured the slime over any of my precious He-Man action figures...

This is perfect timing. I’ve completed the MOTU collections thru 1984, and just recently decided to go for the Horde next. Tony, maybe you can do the Snake Men after i get these completed!!! Ha Ha…. Great content!!

The Evil Horde were some of my favorite additions to the MotU line up. One thing I found interesting is that the "Fright Zone" has more than a few play features in common with Mego's Star Trek "Mission to Gamma VI" playset.

Loooved the Horde Trooper when I was a kid. Always thought he looked so cool. Always thought Hordak was cooler than Skeletor when I was a kid too.

Another top video. I had Hordak, Mantenna and Modulok as a kid. Never watched the She-Ra cartoon tho so I just thought they were more of Skeletor's goons.

I definitely had some of those MOTU figures.

Oddly enough, Modulok was in the original MOTU cartoon and, if I remember correctly, was an evil scientist creature who operated independently from both Skeletor and Hordak.

The Horde blew my mind as a kid

Great video as always. The hoard marked my exit from He-man. I only had hordak and Leech. But the fact that the She-Ra figures were not compatible with He-Man (always weird to me) along with some odd concepts in the later years I just felt it had run it’s course. Dragstor is a prime example. Just too far into the weird. I also remember reading Modulok being difficult. It got to be a frustrating time.

Having multiple villain factions is one thing I love about MOTU. The Horde I enjoyed playing with as their numbers were smaller I'd treat them as more powerful individually than Seketors Evil Warriors.

Modulok (however it's spelled) was a super fun character. I think I got it when I was 5 or 6, and I don't remember having any problems with snapping parts together.

Another letdown for Modulok, along with his tight fitting limbs, was the fact that Mattel didn’t think to include some kind of carrying/storage case for him. It could’ve been molded to resemble a laboratory or something. Same with Multi-Bot. But then again, maybe more plastic would’ve driven up the cost.

I agree that the later villains were often better than the originals. I loved having the Horde and the Snake Men be the main villains of my MotU rather than Skeletor. Another good example of a "greater threat" type villain: Super Powers adding Darkseid and the forces of Apokolips in the 2nd year.

What I liked about the Evil Horde, was that they were not only enemies of He-Man, but enemies of Skeletor and the Evil Warriors as well.

The Horde are the only MOTU that I remember get new and opening Christmas of 1986 or 1987. We had a ton of MOTU toys but sold most of them as we moved on the gi joe . I like the Horde figures the most of the MOTU line.

The Horde are my favorite faction which is why its been a bit painful to see them so neglected so far in the Origins line in favour of round after round of SnakeMen releases.

The introduction of the Horde was right at the end of my kid collecting days for MOTU. I was torn on the idea of them seemingly trying to replace Skeletor. My bro and I had the first 4. I really liked the story for Leach and especially Grizzlor being known from nightmares and used to scare kids to be good lol. Fright Zone like you said just didn’t seem too compelling like Snake Mountain, and again we were phasing out. Slime pit would have awesome a few years earlier though. I’ve grown to like the Horde more on my rebooted collecting. Did you miss the toy that blows apart in half like a suicide bummer? 😂

I had two sets of the bad guys, i called them "The evil twin team!"

I had Leech, Dragstor, Modulok, and Mosquitor and was given a used Mantenna. I never had a problem assembling and tearing down Modulok, so I must have received a later version. I'm glad I got him; he allowed me to be creative in a way my other action figures didn't allow. Dragstor was okay, I knew the transforming feature was a joke but I liked him anyway. Mosquitor was awesome, but he was really hard to get to stand up on his own. I liked and played with Leech a lot; he was my de facto leader of The Horde since I never had Hordak. Mantenna was weird, yeah, but I liked the figure. I hated how he was depicted in the cartoon, though.
