Honestly, this guy is brilliant and totally underrated. He should be the standard for music teachers. He understands that some people need/want more info to play the instrument well, rather than just being told abstract exercises to practice without any connection to the music, or pulse as he says. He is basically responding to and correcting all the bad teachers out there
It really is, most useful drum tutorial I've watched yet. I went off and tried this throw-up/dropping for an hour and... Remarkable change. Suddenly I'm feeling upbeats, without playing them, but they're there. ...A slow quarternote beat feels so comfortable suddenly... Instead of freaking out in all the empty space and trying to hit the beat there's a natural momentum. Everything feeling like it's taking care of itself, particularly the kick, I was having difficulties with getting to flow - dropping the leg like this ball-toe doubles just come through naturally too. Amazing. Thanks v.much +Daniel Glass.
I've played for 20 years and never heard of this man until today. I have REALLY missed out on a phenomenal talent and inspiration! Can't wait to dive into this man's work.

I’m not a drummer, just a fan of music. I clicked on this randomly and I’ve been engrossed the whole time. Mr. Glass you sir are an incredible teacher and even better drummer. What you’ve described seems to me (what do I know though lol) to be the biggest thing missing in music today, and I couldn’t put my finger on it til now. Great job!
I'm not even a drummer, and I LOVED this through and through. I love RCR, but seeing a lefty traditional grip drummer that's this great... Chef's kiss.
Thank you so much! IMO, these messages about motion and movement transcend any particular instrument - or even music in general. It's about accomplishing mechanical tasks in the most economical way possible, while also learning how to get them to connect with our audience in an artistic way by understanding how the masters of the past utilized them toward a particular effect (which I refer to as "the American Pulse."
@@DanielGlassDrums I played drums for a couple years but unfortunately arthritis and tendonitis and all the other itises made it so I really couldn't keep going. My primary instrument used to be French horn, but TMJ got the best of me there, so these days it's mostly just singing and the occasional hand percussion and keyboards. There are some drummers that are just a joy to watch, and the crazy flow that you have. It's like watching Bruce Lee at work. It can be incredibly complex and intricate but you just flow through it like water.
The importance of swing and the way to play it is crucial to drumming in general. The right pulse and knowing the basics without adding too much is the key. Daniel Glass is a great teacher. It's a pleasure to watch him play and speak with so much passion. One of the best lessons on Drumeo for sure. Thanks a lot!
Thank you so much! I teach students from five continents privately via Skype, so if anyone is interested in digging deeper, check out this link: danielglass.com/lessons-consultations/get-private-lessons/

If you liked this you will love his podcasts. Seriously it's like getting an education for free. Thank you Daniel, your passion & dedication is not lost on me.
i just finished checking out a 5:19 video that i thumb-nail clicked accidentally called ''Daniel Glass: Drum Solo'' (it's HQ / Drummerworld quality and i never heard of Mr. Glass until seeing that and now .... yep, you guessed it! >>> STRAIGHT into favorites / bookmarks !
My aunt’s friend was his manager in the early-late 00’s, and the amount of cool stories I’ve heard about this guy and his band always make me glad that they not only exist, but also that he himself is left handed.
This is exactly what I need right now… have been blending bits and pieces of shuffles, and spangalangs, and whatever, and have also been trying to see how few notes l can use to propel a complex groove. Put the click on the upbeat ..
One of the best drum lessons out there. Goes into a cool explanation of how and why American music has remained preeminent in the world and then ties his technique lessons into this. Many lessons show techniques or talk history but I have never seen a clearer explanation tying the “how” into the “why”. Gotta go - need to go back and relearn my basics!
Thanks so much! I'm currently putting the finishing touches on my first in a series of online courses, which tackle the connection between, groove, history, motion and technique HEAD ON! If you're interested learning more, message me off my website (DanielGlass.com) or on social media. Peace!
He should stick to drumming. America won a couple of wars ? Canadian forces took Vimy Ridge in two weeks and the allied forces could not do it in two years .
It's unbealivable how relaxed I was after watching this lesson. He explained basics that most self taught drummers skip throughout drumming journey. And the way he explained... man. He grabs your attention so easy you can't even get bored or consider it as just another useless lesson. Great job Drumeo!
Huge respect for drumeo for brining on this absolute legend. Huge respect for Daniel for responding to all these comments. Brilliant video, unreal drummer.
Daniel Glass has to be one of the drummers that perfectly embodies the elegance and complexity in drum both technique and feel masterfully. Just as breathing and walking. Really appreciate that kind of approach : )
Easily my favorite jazz drummer of all time. Highly underrated and not talked about enough. He doesn't just know what he's supposed to play, he carefully formulated what he's supposed to play by learning all he could about why he should play it that way. And the part that amazed me the most is not only did he know how and why to play his part, he could have told us how Buddy rich would have played his part, or how Peter Erskine would play it. Daniel's knowledge of his role in music is (I think) completely unchallenged. Thank you for being not only a good drummer and teacher but also an inspiration to me, you're why I do what I do, and I can't thank you enough.
A master drummer . He knows what he's talking about, as long as I have been watching Drumeo, this is the very first time I have ever heard a drummer that knows what he's talking about, he's a Doctor of the drums.
one of the greatest lessons I´ve ever seen...one of the things that I liked the most was when he highlights the importance of the basics of jazz drumming...and rock drumming as well...many drummers unfortunately tend to skip steps (to be honest I have...), and use shortcuts to finally realize there´s something missing when they play. Thanks for posting, Priceless lesson.
As Left handed Guitar Player finally it all makes sense seeing the Groove and the Pulse from the perspective on a left handed Drummer! Daniel Glass has got the feel for sure, seeing him play made want a Drum Kit. Excellent insight into how and why each piece of the kit is used. Thoroughly recommended whatever instrument you play. Thanks Drumeo...
This is what I call a REALLY VALUABLE! lesson Although thought I knew a lot about the history of drum-set -(playing/independence) this video filled a lot of gaps I had about the history of drumset-playing! THIS is by far one of the most valuable videos/lessons on your channel! Thank you, drumeo, and Daniel Glass very very much for this. I made this video a "must-see" for my students! Again a big THANK YOU to drumeo and Mr. Glass.
Thanks. If you're in Germany, I host a drumming intensive south of Frankfurt every year. We'll be back next October. Details: danielglass.com/2023-euro-jazz-intensive/
I do not know why, but every time I watch some new video of Mr Glass I got strong emotions about how beautiful drumming can say or express so many beautiful and deep things to/of our souls. Thank you, mate! That's the principal reason of good music - to profoundly touch our limited existence with Greatness. God bless You, Daniel.
+Zenony Thanks - what a beautiful thing to say! Like yourself, I have deep feelings about the profound effect that drumming and music can have on our soul. To that effect, I"ll be launching a PodCast in the next couple of weeks that will offer my take on music, rhythm and LIFE. Please sign up for my e-Newsletter at DanielGlass.com if you want to receive notice about this launch. Thanks again for your wonderful comment!
Absolutely loved this lesson. The history of the upright bass was illuminating and the concept of letting natural gravity create the note and pulse. I wish I would have had this lesson was I was younger, I have of lot work to do now to reverse bad habits, but I am exciting to get going. Thank you Drumeo / Daniel.
I’m just stoked to see a left-handed drummer featured. I’ve definitely experienced some stigma and blowback from other musicians. But someone with the amazing experience and background is a nice bonus. I really enjoyed hearing about the foundations of jazz and how they influenced rock. And of course, the performances were amazing.
+Daniel Glass I'm not familiar with the original to be honest. I know the famous chorus of course but can't recall the music as I haven't ever listened to Elvis' music properly. I enjoyed the hell out of your bands arrangement though, ended up buying it.
I discovered Daniel Glass from Jojo Mayer DVD two years ago, now I see Daniel Glass using Jojo Mayer Sticks ... They're both great drummers, musicians & artists. Greeting!
Just jumping into the drumming world at age 39 after a decade of bass and about 25 years of keys. LOVE this video (and killer grooves, man, I envy your bassists!). Seeing it broken down like this really drives home why I'm driving my wife nuts with the basics right now. :-D
danny glass, masterclass! your knowledge of American drumming history that you share is life changing. the way you teach is philosophic, and when you learn the roots of what your playing it brings it all together. thank you! that drum face tho, yeesh!
Me encanta la manera en que enseña Daniel Glass. Me basé en sus videos para hacer una presentación en la universidad sobre la historia de la batería y su impacto en la música moderna.
Hi Daniel! Your approach is awesome, thanks for sharing with the world your teachings. Right now I'm studying your book "The Commandments of Early Rhythm and Blues Drumming" and definitely opened my mind! Greetings from Brazil
wow ! probably the most interesting, inspiring and engaging drum lesson I think I've ever seen.Thank you Daniel. Awesome musician, teacher and human being in general.
+Aaron Fahy Thanks so much. I hope to do some more with Drumeo soon, and I also teach privately via Skype, if you have any stuff you'd like to work on more deeply. Cheers!
Daniel, you the man.!! Pure class, love your videos, and the education you share with the brotherhood of drumming.Thank you sir.You have truly educated a person who has been playing for over 50 years.love it.!!!
+josh dyer Hey Josh. You're not alone - in fact, you need to join the "Lefty Drummers Rule" group on Facebook. It's a great little community of us hard core lefties - getting our groove on in our own particular way!
This guy is so f……. awesome! As a beginner drummer I am so glad I discovered Daniel Glass now, big inspiration! Thanks for bringing him on Drumeo and I gonna head over to your site now Daniel. Thanks!
Thanks much - I really appreciate that. And it's not too late, you know. I teach and offer consultations via Skype, if you ever want to dig into any aspects of your drumming a bit deeper.
@@DanielGlassDrums I'm fascinated by the early evolution of drumset playing and checked out your videos on the Vic Firth site. I'm hoping to find a copy of your DVD asap!
@@champagne213 Thanks, Joshua. You can buy "The Century Project" DVD from my website here: danielglass.com/portfolio/the-century-project/ If you buy it off the website, I'll throw a free gift in with your package. :-)
Love this guy! We need more drummers like this in the world. Just plain groove! And the History? I love it! Always love knowing where my instrument came from. Thanks to Drumeo for this! And thanks Daniel for being such an awesome Jazz/Big Band influence! Buddy would be proud (he wouldn't tell you though, he'd probably grunt approvingly and then shout at the Horn section). I'm so glad you played "Hey Pachuco", my favorite song from one of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite movies! What's it like to have a song that defines such a famous character like the Mask?
+Chris Dicks Hey thanks so much for all the kind words. Although it sometimes feels like an uphill battle in the music world of today, I am really proud to have spent my career learning about and playing classic American music. A lot of folks told me I was crazy 15 years ago when I decided I wanted to start writing books and doing clinics on the subject, but I believe that if one is passionate about something, people will jump on the bandwagon, and to a great degree that has happened! As for "Hey Pachuco," it is a gift that has kept on giving for almost 25 years. Thanks for noticing!
Wow, this was a really insightful lesson Daniel! Guess what I'm doing for the next 2 months, simple beats letting gravity work to rework my own playing.
Probably the most useful lesson I've seen so far from a guest teacher, so thank you so much Daniel! Also you look like you could be related to Jared :)
This is AWESOME! I love how Daniel told everything, AWESOME! Respect! Ive learnd so many things in a short while and I start understanding stuff so fast, I have to say thank you DRUMEO!! Yes!
This isn't about this video (although i enjoyed it) but please get Joey Baron to talk about his life, drumming and musical freedom. This needs to happen!
