When the stylist mentioned how it’s attractive for women to look moody and not smile, my Russian aunt said it’s often thought that a woman who is bubbly and smiles a lot doesn’t have much going on in her head (air headed and aloof). Having a serious expression is a signal of intelligence.
These people all need to shut up. If a woman is serious she’s a prude intellectual, if she’s bubbly and smiles she’s an empty headed bimbo. 🙄 Just say you hate women no matter what they do and go. Even more embarrassing watching women help men with this bullshit saying such stupid things.
looking back on all the women i've dated, this seems so true. the loud and expressive ones were the most boring and annoying ones to be around. the quiet and serious ones were the ones that taught me a lot, both dating wise and intellectually
why would it be tone deaf to report on something? Genuine question. I don't understand how the concept of international news and journalism could work if we were so naive to believe every sentiment shared on a documentary
how is it tone deaf? The majority of the episode is about how shitty russian culture is. I think this is the most effective smear campaign of Russia I have seen and I commend them for that
Hailey, you do such an incredible job at interviewing people, especially if they have differing viewpoints. Your style of interviewing really allows people of any political background to express themselves fully and i appreciate that this series attributes enough agency to the viewer to form an opinion, while still commenting on discriminatory viewpoints.
Wait… how is a child “hostage” to loving same-sex parents who took considerable effort and finances to bring that child into their lives, but not a hostage to a heterosexual couple who drinks, fights, and neglects them? It’s not really about the gender of the parents…..
Just so you further understand how toned deaf Russians are on gay people: my mother was anti-gay men because she thought that meant less men for women to marry. It wasn’t until she met all of my gay and bi friends to realize that mindset was so incredibly false. And this was 20+ years after she moved to the use.
Did anti-Russian sentiments ever leave America? Who keeps sanctioning who? It’s a good thing you left and never do returns. Russia can do away with traitors like you. Every country has a right to define themselves and carve a clear path for themselves. The west values can’t be the same fro Russia! And if you truly are a real Russian, you will know better
At 31:10 when that guy poke her and keeps doing it even though she is obviously uncomfortable with it, and then when she says “I’m from New York” he says “I would be accused of sexual harassment” like dude that’s sooo weird wtf? He knew what he was doing and tried to act like oh it fine American women over react…He’s lucky that she can be professional, I would have started going off on him 🙄 no wonder he is still single 🤢
🤮and he still kept trying like “😮💨and u say it in such sexy voice” like… he really thinks he’s so funny as if he’s charming her by being misogynistic and making fun of America, when he’s speaking to (harassing) an American woman…
They’ve been republishing this whole series! Chill y’all. This whole series is fascinating. It focuses on parts of the world that generally struggle and Russia is no exception. This was journalism well done. She did not inject her opinion as the content should be all the audience needs to make their judgment call. This was eye opening. I did not think it glorified Putin but pointed to how great a facade his show of “strength” is. He is a coward hiding behind brainwashed communities that have a sad disconnect to reality thanks to his successful campaigns within the country. I feel for the Russians that know the truth and want out and for the Russians who have died trying to get the truth out there. What Putin is doing in Ukraine is terrible. This just highlights the disturbing psyche of Putin and his supporters.
She did not said anything but it contain a lot of 'context". You already forgotten what Ukraine and the West do to Donbass for almost 10 years, that is what really terrible. You are just another western brainwashed zombie.
This was very good information, one can almost see the parallels in western society and russian society that wants "traditional livelihoods" Shocking but undesirably relevant
I love the fact that the team showed such a side of Russia. Thanks for the cringe, but these misogynists are not the essence of our state. The opposition was given a few minutes, while it really exists in Russia (especially in such a cultural city as St. Petersburg). I wish commentators and viewers to sensibly evaluate such content and take into account that everything shown in the video is exaggerated. Russia is not only about bans and responses to sanctions. We have our own culture without conservative political views and our own artists with a new vision. P.s. By the way, how are all these people connected with fashion week in St. Petersburg?
I grew up in St. Petersburg, lived there in 2016 and god, did this video made me cringe! This didn't reflect the life in StP at all. Can we stop fetishising Russia? Stop pushing the stereotypes about Russian brides/Eastern meek and submissive girls? Stop making it look like everything in Russia is about Putin? Or about big weird mafia guys and supermodels? This is not Anastasia cartoon! And yeah, the reporting on furs was really unprofessional.
what really cringeworthy is that a guy like Milonov was elected multiple times to serve on executive positions by people of St. Petersburg. So much for progressive city! And everything is about Putin there, because he's been ruling the country singlehandedly for over two decades now.
lol @ the people in the comments saying how dare you publish in a time of war. Simply not publishing doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist anymore. Also, If you have any idea how to change the mind of a grown ass conservative adult from a whole ass other country while doing a 20 minute interview, reach out directly to vice. I’m sure they’d love to have you on board. Y’all can’t change the minds of the people you live next door to, what the fuck makes you think you’d be any better in this situation than this woman…lmaoooo
I don't think they understand how journalism works.. just because you don't like something doesn't mean you shouldn't learn about it. That's actually just life in general
russian dude: it's a natural necessity for woman to get married and live happily interviewer: but russia has the highest divorce rate in the world russian dude: yeah.. but 🤓☝
That's because these "reporters" purposely search for freaks as representatives of Russia. Notice how the speed dating thing had mostly old unattractive men and women of the same calibre.. (only one guy was young and good looking, I don't know what he was doing there) normal Russians would't be seen dead at an event like that. And the guy that was poking her is clearly socially awkward and likely has mental problems, hence the Incel status. Normal Russian guys are far more charming than this. As for the marriage agency guy.. he's a scammer praying on people's insecurities and mental problems. She could have also just taken a normal taxi to the fashion event like all normal people do, but no.. she had to find a damn tank. I wouldn't even be surprised if most people there were paid to act as total freaks, then slap some dreary music on top and bam.. we have our selves this "documentary"
Everyone is free to make their own choices. Whether you like it or not. Judging people who do not agree with a certain lifestyle is the exact same anyway YOU put it.
"Were not Afraid to be isolated" the last words in this doc from a Russian politician....honestly haunting to hear now 7 months after the war started...this was filmed 6 or 7 years ago by the way.....and isolated they willl be!! #prayforukraine
They care less! The west is not the whole world! The bulk of the world is with Russia. The west should accept their failed attempts at breaking up Russia! You helped build a strong sense of nationalism in young Russians. They now who the real enemies are. Russia is self-sufficient remember?
It’s weird to hear that marriage in Russia is a spiritual thing because it really isn’t. Religion is still not that important as far as marriage goes mainly because spiritual traditions were lost during the Soviet Union.
During the crisis of the 90s, many people went to faith and to faith in the supernatural. Now there is no Soviet state in Russia. The opinion of priests is very important) they are even allowed to go to school, tell girls how to be a good wife, etc
It's interesting to see the level of quasi-fanatical pro-Putin patriotism, and economic sanctions against Russia . . . in 2016. Fast forward to now, in late 2022. Russia already had military action in Ukraine, before this video was made (2014, Crimea). Trying to measure the public sentiment now is a bit more in context with this window into the past . . . via a fashion show! Hailey does a remarkably good job with her series, very down to Earth, respectful, and gets unique access into the local cultures and people.
Well, some people here say this is a good journalistic job. Sorry, but no. This is quite weak - they didn't dig deeper, they didn't give important context, they just tried to make it catchy for the western audience. Like let's find some freaks for a good show and use Putin's name as often as possible. It's a good show, but don't look at it as a good journalistic job. [and about the fashion claimed in the title - here are just two words from an SPB Fashion Week spokesperson]
This video was produced in 2016 (even though it currently as of this day says just one month ago). I wonder if 6 years later, how the Russians being interviewed in the video now (and population in general) feel about Putin post his February 26 invasion of Ukraine and loss of, depending on which statistics you listen to, up to 60,000 soldiers and other consequences caused by his decisions then and sense and the fallout it has had on their lives. Particularly those young adults interviewed in the café setting.
The two stereotype I found to be true in most ex iron curtain locales was that one should never attempt to outdrink the inhabitants and larges swathes have a bizzare love of Michael Jackson. Otherwise I think these viewpoints pefectly demonstate the universal nightmarishness of religiosity and an extreme conservative outlook.
Omg she so badass! To keep looking the beast of conservatism, sexism and homophobia right in the eye. Very interesting to see and hear that side of pro-Putin Russians pretty ubinhibited. Some of it mademe chuckle , some of it made me raise my eyebrows and some of it made me almost sick and a lot of it made me pity Russian women. Omg. And this was 6 years ago..imagine the sentiments now. I do like the fact that this system endorses more local trade and manufacturing, and here and there enlivens local or national traditions, but the Stepford Wives approach to this all is just really really dishartening and frightening.
Glad they clarified this was made by vice in 2016 because I was so turned off by it and considered it tone deaf before I realized that. I do think the timing of republish is tone deaf however so nothings changed much.
Congratulations for one of the most eye-opening series I have ever watched. The fashion angle is absolutely perfect to truly understand the culture of a society. This particular episode was hard to watch but it's important to understand what is really going on.
i had a fake lather coat and it was just cold i have a real one to gluy but warm and the cow died from old age they believe the older the hide the stronger the hide is my grandma gived it to me she got it when she was young and i want one to for the warmth
Those fluffy hats, usually made out of bear fur, are called "kuczma's". It looked great on you! 😁 That is my family name, changed to Kuchma, then Kuchman, when my grandparents moved to America. My uncle is Leonid Kuchma, the former President of Ukraine. 🙏📖🇺🇸🌎
Why was this episode posted now out of context of the rest of the series? As many have said, posting this now is rather tone deaf, and imo an insult to the original producers. This series was great when it came out, especially the Congo and Pakistan episodes. All that being said I accept that the OG producers should have done more to engage with real Russians, as even people from Russia in this comment section are saying it's off the mark.
@@cherrywilson6267 I'm Russian and I say that this is an American propaganda hit piece. Where did she even find that many freaks to film? This was done intentionally and it's obvious.
Its so sad, Russia has an amazing mind boggling history and really cool culture, after the fall of the Soviet Union it had the potential and resources to be a great place, too bad he ruined everything!!!!!!!! #standwithukraine
I’m not a big fan of Putin, but to say HE ruined everything is an incredibly narrow POV & perspective that is untenable once a person begins to educate themselves on Russian history over the last 120 yrs or so
@@tonypro1527 yes he ruined modern day russia, by waging genocide on an innocent country and forcing Russia into diplomatic isolation, the standard of living in Russia was already not the best for most people and now the sanctions from the past 8 years including the new ones from the war, make the standard of living even worse …he did ruin Russia….he is ruining peoples lives in Ukraine…yes I can blame him solely…not to mention the great political democracy and freedom of speech Russian people have….oh wait…see what I mean
@@4567bugie I am not defending Putin nor do I often agree with his politics. Yes, he has made some particulary awful decisions, especially as of late, that have really hurt Russia. Although, what ruined everything for modern Russia is the disastrous transitionally period immediately after the fall of the Soviet Union and Communism. Yes, this is the time optimism was highest and it had the potential to be a great place. In the decade that followed (Putin was not in power for any of this time) unbelievable mismanagement, corruption, lack of understanding of how decades of communist rule/ideology had impacted the minds of the population, etc. all but destroyed this optimism and Putin is a direct consequence of the total failure during this period. Without this horrible period of time for Russia which happened to come when optimism was at its highest there is no opportunity for a strong man like Putin to take control. Therefore, he did not ruin everything, he came to power at a time when things were alredy at a low point. He is simply a consequence of the failure inthe decade following 1991- this period of time is what ruined it all. You see.
Bloody hell: for the most part, Russia truly IS lost. Now as i'm writing this, in early September 2022, i'm wondering just how much - if at all - attitudes and outlooks amongst, particularly younger, Russians might have changed actually. All i can really say is that, were i myself one of them, i'm fairly certain my preeminent ambition in life would be just to escape from the country - and from its incredibly repressive, almost draconian, retrogressive mindset and atmosphere....
I'm from Russia. I love my country and my city and actually feel much more pressure from the West or Europe than from Russia. I'm 15 years old. I am blamed for the war and hated only for my origin. This is terrible
@@yansss_ I sincerely am sorry to learn that such is proving to be your experience; personally, i harbour no such sentiments towards the Russian people, as i fully realise that they are truly in no sense responsible for what their - what *your* - country's "governmental leadership" is doing in, and to, Ukraine. I was actually alluding however to the rather quite backward-looking and retrogressive societal mindset which would seem to appear, unfortunately, so very prevalent amongst so many ( ?? ) of Russia's citizens, even in so supposedly sophisticated and cosmopolitan a city as Sankt Peterburg 😔....
@@yansss_ I don't blame you or the general public of Russia for the war in Ukraine, but for many, they have been misled by an agenda and policy which is not at all what is being presented to the public. Of course Russian people want to love and be proud of their country, just like anyone else would be of their country and heritage. Just try to process this if you can, Putin had no "emergency" reason to invade Ukraine, NATO was not on the verge of attacking anyone. If anything, there was a brief window of hope for being with Russia on good terms . . . but then came Putin, with his ultra hard right nationalistic fervor.
I can not underatand where did she find it?!.. St.Pete is such a wonderful and fancy place, with lots of high cuisine places, fashion disign shops..and she decided to show matreshki, some strange fat guy and some agressive actions .. thats so pitty and disinformative.
“Putting things in order in Chechnya.” Gack. That song at 12:16 is the mirror image of “Girls Say Yes to Guys Who Say No,” a slogan in the US in the late 1960s/early 1970s.
I’m surmised you didn’t raise the same concerns about women changing to the women of Venezuela that have a lot of plastic surgery while living in poverty.
@@cherrywilson6267 oh for god's sake they absolutely fucking did ask for the war! You just have no idea how much the "innocent" citizens actually support the war, and it's sickening. We ukrainians know better
Can’t belive that in Russia a country that everyone could think of be better than the rest of the world!.....do and think the same way that my hometown in México!...small litte town in Michoacán! 😆...where you get married at 18 or so and if not you’re a Desperate and old woman 😆😆...and that was 20 years ago! Thanks God now women wait to get married until at least 25.
Everything in this "documentary" was staged. Where did she even find so many freaks to film? Looks like she had a very specific agenda behind making of this film.
38:51 The change of his reaction once he was questioned. Funny. Sigh, feel bad for the woman and queer who lives there, tho I also hope there's a change, AN ACTUAL CHANGE.
