The Evolution of Gambling in RuneScape 

Runescape taught me more about the meaning of trust, or lack there of, than the real world did at a young age.

My cat gambles tuna cans and sardines under the deck with other local cats, I caught them all one time.

I remember when this trade limit got introduced!! I think it was around the time when this corrupted dragon stuff was in the game for f2p

I was heavily involved in the original dicing situation in RS2, and I can safely say that this is not even close to an unsolvable problem. Jagex can literally just ban these middlemen and their clans for player ran games of chance. Jagex has never struggled with this situation, they knew that disabling dice would do nothing back in the day, they only did that to 'appear' as though they were doing something. Many employees benefit from these situations existing, they will use their position at Jagex as a way to gain 'clout' with these groups and then leave it as an open secret that they are involved. Remember the pictures proving all the Jagex employees were involved with the services discord? That isn't a rare situation, the only rare thing is broadcasting it to everyone. Proof is rare because you only need to 'prove' it to a couple of people and then their vouches will carry the rest. This is also how a lot of people in games like OSRS will fake their status as an employee for clout, they will have a friend with the actual position that leaks them things and then they will use those leaks as 'proof' of either their (fake or real) employment status or real proof of their connections. This results in Jagex having an unfortunately heavy amount of bias towards not disrupting these objectively easy-to-fix and bad for the game situations. You can think I'm crazy if you want but I was involved with dicing in OSRS for years and Carries in WoW for over 15 years. I've literally seen first hand that these corruption situations are 100% real and not an exaggeration. Just recently I was involved in some sales before the 'purge' on WoW and there was literally a guy who was paid JUST to act as an 'enforcer' because he was in a connected slack channel with Blizzard's ticket handlers. We had to get in contact with the guy who was causing the bans to go through and get him to try and back off because the customers had chosen to pay for the carry rather than face a ban and lose the gear. He couldn't stop them either, even have having proof submitted to them and the original complainer vouching that the bans were corrupt and unfair, they specifically stated they wouldn't reverse their decision because it could cause a review on the situation. We raised hell over the situation and basically demanded escalation and they refused, I'm not sure if I still have the chat pictures but it was crazy the way they started lying about being their manager and there being no level 2, etc. I'm thoroughly convinced that our chatlogs got flagged for review from that situation and that is what caused carry organizations to be banned as a whole a couple of months later.

It’s so insane how some people will exploit runescape and people this way. Absolutely disgusting. Runescape was my favorite game growing up.

I remember first reading that reddit post about the guy in gambling addiction recovery because of runescape duel arena and just said to myself "Thats why i never actually staked, i fought for fun". Just fighting for fun or boxing in the duel arena back in the day way the best thing because it was just pure RNG and stats.

They didn't nerf the duel arena because players rose up, the nerfed/removed it because the government started cracking down on them as hosting an unregulated gambling site.

I remember seeing the Oda clip live.. and i fucking died laughing. The fire cape...one of the most iconic items in game has been dumbed down to a cheese cape. fucking gold lol.

Great video again. Crazy how consistent gambling/RWT is in RS3 & OSRS after 20 years. But I'm also lowkey excited to see what other crazy methods the gamblers/farmers come up with because it is kind of impressive.

You’ll never fully stop something as addicting as gambling, especially in a video game. Hypothetically if a max main gambling addict is completely cleaned and broke irl (can’t buy more gold) farming vorkath or zulrah or whatever else in peasant gear is actually fun compared to the irl equivalent of working in a factory/warehouse or something. Also Jagex will never truly stop this, and why should they as a company? It’d be a dumb decision and they only finally neutered the DA bc they were being investigated by the government

my account got banned today for 3 days for real world trading. I went to 579 and i was doing 10m side bets on other players fighting each other. I was only doing 10m's.... for like 20 mins. traded back and forth maybe like 5-6 times and I got banned for this? Yet these ranked guys are trading billions and taking commission on it and don't get banned???? HOW IS THAT FAIR?????

you forgot the invincibility bug where a small group of players found out how to stall the death animation when you reached 0 hp (or maybe it was a forced teleport i don't remember), resulting in their characters being unattackable which they also abused at the arena.

I got put off from gambling at a early age seeing my father going to underground casinos to gamble his paycheck instead of buying food or paying bills bruh sometimes he will bring me with him or leave me and younger siblings alone I would wake up in the middle of night with adult swim on trying bro figure out what the adult humor is but just holding out till George Lopez to come on with the lowrider song it's way better than hanging around drunks that are losers but sometimes they gave me a dollar to buy chips sometimes but still they're bums that waste their life away in beer and Playing pool my only entertainment was watching them play pool or beer bottle caps

Back in the day I used to get high pid for like 2 hours before I went staking. Me and my friend would follow each other logging in and out and keep getting higher and higher pid. I made about 30b I was so greedy and wanted more.. sure I could of sold it and got a nice car since I was in high-school.. but the greed took over and I staked this guy named Baal. Supposedly he Had almost a 1 trill bank. I lost all my 30b to him within 10 min lol... that was a very long time ago and I still think about my losses to this day.

Actually gambling is still a huge thing in RuneScape. Old School and RS3 alike. In OSRS I know there's those bots that dress up in those identical outfits to "gamble" with them, then the people running them (or someone affiliated with them) will pay players to say it's not a scam and is totally legit "It's just a game of chance, I won 2bil and lost like 200mil". I was in chats on OSRS where people were clearly getting paid off by people to say those bots are 100% legit and not a scam.

It's so interesting to learn how scamming / gambling works in other mmos. Gambling is just a handful of roll types in WoW and scamming is only really possible anymore via the Auction House (Grand Exchange). It's like one of the only good things that Blizzard has done to help players against malicious activity.

I understand why it’s not in the game anymore, Tho I’m very nostalgic to the times people trusted me with 500m as a solo host.

This has always been around though, I remember dicing back in the day was huge. Or gambling with flowers. I remember I made 24M from 1M in an hour back in the day and lost it all 30 minutes later LMAO

Great video! What surprises me the most is how illegal all of this is and even more surprising is how the UK government still hasn't done anything. I remember Jagex was in front of the UK parliment few years ago and they outright denied that they are a gambling company. OFC they were talking about RS3 MTX but there is an even bigger underground gambling circle ran in the other game.

Gambling is a horrible addiction, worse than any drink/drug addiction in my opinion, having worked in the industry at an early age and having to admit to myself a couple years back that I had a gambling addiction which has left me in debt that I'm still paying off today. It's hard to admit to yourself when things have gone too far and that you need help, thankfully my addiction was strictly online casinos/sports betting which through the help of an organization in the UK I was able to exclude myself from every site for 5 years, hate to think how bad it could have been if I was a DA gambler etc.

I've played ALOT of MMORPGs in my life, Runescape was the first back in 2003 I was in middle school.. Out of all of the MMORPGs in the world Runescape is the most ridden with criminal types that I can see. I've seen real life threats.. people calling the cops on other people.. hacking social media accounts, it's pretty bad. Don't get me wrong I love Runescape but the crowd it attracts has always been pretty bad. Especially on Oldschool.
