The Evolution of Horology: Citizen Cosmotron Repair

In this video Mike looks at a genre of watch movement long forgotten. In those early years of the 70s where quartz was becoming a real proposition for time keeping. The Evolution of horology brought us a transistorised electronic watch that uses a mechanical movement and balance for its timekeeping. Watch as Mike tries to fix this Citizen Cosmotron from the 1970s.

A little bit, but unless you’re spending $$$$$, microphones and typical recording software will amplify background noise, or any noise it can get, if there’s not much going on in the foreground. It’s tough for the type of recording we do

No quartz, it's transistor driven & more akin to the ATO licenced clock movements of the 1960's. On all these types the balance pivots are under a fair bit of strain due to the weight of the two balance magnets. Still a great piece of history 👍

No quartz although they were emerging at the time of this watch. I still prefer the Seiko Elnix to this Cosmotron but both have been satisfying to work on and understand how they work.

Thank you. honest is the best way, I want to inspire people into the hobby but also show that its not easy, even 7 years into it!. I like to bring to the channel things that interest me and that perhaps other channels are not doing. Affordable watches is my focus. The hobby can be done on cheap watches and you still get the same excitement to repair something.

I'm pretty sure it was Hamilton who came up with this concept. On 3 January 1957, the American brand Hamilton Watch Company revolutionised the watchmaking sector by presenting the first electric watch in history: the Ventura. Its design was futuristic at the time, and today it is a celebrated icon. The innovation resulting from 10 years of research is technologically unprecedented! The Ventura represents a major evolution in watchmaking since the creation of the mechanical watch. It is the very first mechanical watch powered by an electric battery.

Great video, thank you! Then there was a whole era of transition from mechanics to the quartz that we use now. And it was these beautiful electromechanical movements. Not only Citizen and Seiko made these, Swiss also created their own. It would be interesting to see a review of the Swiss ESA 9154 Dynotron movement, which was used in many electromechanical watches of that era.

Outstanding. I recently came across that incredible quick day date change doing a mechanical citizen seven star v2. Quickly made it one of my favorite watches! I have one of those that I have to polish and I'm not looking forward to it!

I did a video on a 7 Star Deluxe over a year ago now, it didnt have that setup but was one hell of a tricky movement! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rMfBm5k7yGs.html Facets are mainly glass crystals and cut on the outside. Seiko mainly used glass although I do have a Seiko with an acrylic one with them on the inside. Also in my Ricoh video those were also on the inside. The beauty of the acrylic ones is you can polish them up in minutes but the glass ones are impossible. The glass I prefer though as they just look so good in the light

Nice, great to see an unsual watch movement altlhough I do have a thing for the X8/Cosmotrons. They are very unique movements and they 78xx series is a much more refined design compared to the 08xx or 48xx - these still use a pallet fork and are closer to the Elnix. Since your Elnix video the Japanese tech docs I had on a boat have arrived. I'll stick some translated images on the FB group page but couple of random things stuck out. Beat error isn't set like 'normal BE' you actually need a gap due to the way the watch is driven backwards. If you look at the mainplate where the escape goes there is a tiny magnet that 'locks' the escape in place - this covers the lack of pallet fork and the wierd BE setup. The watch should kick out 180-260 horizontal and 160-240 - there is a handy little diagram of balance for reference. The A and B markings on the mainplate are for the auto hack found on the 7801, single pusher will set seconds hand to zero of its 0 seconds minus 3/plus 3. Great work as always, I've got an 'electric' Timex which looks a lot like the Hamilton/Ricoh setup - that lools wierd too!
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 2 месяца назад
Id welcome any docs you have movements like this . It helps me plus I can put them up on the group and my site. I did see the B and the magnet bit dismissed regrettably . I am sure I have this setup wrong as it already has an issue in that firstly the second hand does not beat like a high beat, could be normal I guess? Also despite a contestant Timegrapher reading it seems to loose 30 seconds in 12 hours . Maybe this is as you are saying about the setup. It could be I do a follow on video on this setup so if anyone else is doing this movement for the first time they can then also figure it out correctly. Thanks

I was going to put a watch together from parts but i dont know what movement to use, i dont ware the same watch every day so i was thinking about a quartz or electrical movement, do you have any suggestions? Kind regards, keep up to good work. Juri.

You did good. Look at you!. Do whatever watches you like, Mike. Maybe if you run into an older early 70s quartz Seiko like the 3803 series. But this was another fun watch from Mike. Mike Bolton. "That _was_ a good name until I was twelve-years old, and that no-talent ass clown started winning Grammys" -- Michael Bolton played by David Herman from the classic comedy Office Space Btw, Hamilton was the first to come out with the electric watch in 1957. The Electric 500 was the first one to come out with a battery to power a balance wheel instead of a mainspring. It has a wacky design with respect to the battery hold down spring making it easy to destroy the watch by slipping and ramming one's finger through the critical thinner-than-hair make and break circuit wires that power the balance. Therefore, they changed the design of the battery hold down within a year or two.

Hallo Mike, thank you very much for your interesting work ! I bought Citizen Cosmotron 7803 NOS some months ago. It is the version with the flyback function and the wonderful blue gradient Dial. My question is: Why does the secondhand not sweep as one could expect from a highbeat movement? Best regards Thomas

This I don’t know. I guess it’s gear ratios. It is a shame and something I really should have made a point of saying in the video. The Seiko Elnix appear much smoother.

Lovely watch. I am shocked at how similar it looks to my Rado Balboa. I suspect Citizen may have copied the design. Still a great looking piece. Audio sounded fine to me

@@MyRetroWatches Looks like the Rado Balboa V was made from 1970-79. The case shape is almost identical, and even down to small details like the handset and faceted crystal. Homages are so common in the watch world. To me, it doesn't detract from the Citizen in any way. I still think it's ace.

Just repaired a seiko elnix similar to this. Then bought 2 cosmotron x8. On x8 the electronic block and magnetic coil are 2 seperate pieces. hoping to get 1 running. But what a nightmare. They both different and both seem to have the same issue. The magnetic coil are both burnt out. Been looking ever since for this part. No luck. Rather buy one running if you want to get a cosmotron.

I love the Elnix and actually just completed another tonight. I did a video on them a while back but at the time it didnt get so much interest. This Cosmotron was interesting and I have since learnt today that I have setup my balance wrong in regulation so I still have work to do.

I have two of the lesser Crystron's, sadly the second of the pair died when installing the crystal in situ and kinda killed the movement when the crystal turned out to not be as advertised and a bit over the measurement (seems to be quite common with ebay crystals where folks buy a set, use one and put in willy nilly the ones they don't use, return to seller who then sells it as such and such size and its not :( ) My other one is a 7300 but not the "mega" and can't get into it as caseback is welded to the movement through dirt and age, had it soaking in some isopropyl and then some naptha but that is not coming off without some heavy levering :*(

One observation, despite the high beat of 36000 per hour, the second hand only ticks 6 times per second. I have counted it. I guess the high beat doesn't always translate into how smooth the sweeping action is. If someone has more info on this, I would love to hear.

But what makes it go? I see the balance is powered by the coil, but there’s no escape wheel or pallet fork. How is the motion of the balance transferred to the train of wheels without an escape wheel?
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 2 месяца назад
The whole thing like the Seiko Elnix runs backwards. The battery pluses the coil which in turn reacts to the magnet on the balance wheel. This swings and has an impulse jewel on it like a normal balance that moves the star shaped wheel that I at first fitted upside down. That wheel moves (also a magnet on the main plate I believe. This then moves the first brass wheel which in turn powers the main train on the top layer.

@@MyRetroWatches I believe it's due to the different escape mechanism. If you look carefully, the second hand only advances on every other beat. So, even though the watch beats 10 times a second, the second hand only moves 5 times/sec.

Technically quite fun and a great repair! But there's no arguing about taste and color. Still, I find this watch bulky, too heavy with hideous hands and a hideous dial. I don't want to think about reading the time through such a glass. In short, I wouldn't have thought for a moment about wearing this thing.
