well, at least we agree that portal mod is the best. But what about that mel mod they've made? I didn't know people made mods for mods for portal before.
Prey 2006 already portal-like portals and came just one year later. Also, Prey didn't only have portals, it also had gravity-defying platforms like in Mario Galaxy and you could also spin the axis of some rooms, making the wall be the floor and the floor be the wall. That game is so criminally underrated.
Into the multiverse definitely released before Mel, but it may be because it was released in parts since it was a workshop series. Part 1 was without a doubt released before Mel
Portal prelude and Mel are the two mods that genuinely feel Canon (prelude to a lesser extent because of the weird gman Easter eggs) and are also the most fun and challenging
Honestly in my book, Mel is canon. Everything is perfect in it. Honestly one of the best mods to ever be created for any video game ever. Prism did a phenomenal job. Prelude feels way less canon, but that’s mostly because the scientists testing you had like 0 care for your safety. Not trying to say that aperture cared so much about safety but they pretty much cared for your safety as much as GLaDOS does which doesn’t make sense IMO. Still a good mod and with a bit of changes it can be perfectly canon (in my opinion). Mel was just so perfect though.
I discovered it last year and was amazed by how polished it was. It's practically Portal 3 if one were to be made in the years after 2. The puzzles build on the difficulty set in Portal 2, the graphics are equally polished, and there was actual story to it. My only small gripe was the voice acting which could get a little shrill at times but it absolutely didn't detract from the experience.
i really had hope in repercussions and i hope the developers come back soon and hit us in the face with a big "lol you thought". as for absolute0, its super exciting to see it come together all at the end. max fire and the people helping him have done a really great job with it. its sad to see so many creators stop working on their mods, because most of those mods at the end looked stunning
I really hope Absolute0 gets completed, but if it does it will be quite a bit in the future, as its very pre-pre-alpha stage but for the amount that ive played it seems like its doing very well, the most lacking part is the portals themself
@@virtualfroggy yeah. ive heard they've had some trouble with the story too. and the mods arent getting along and thres some issues with nobody getting along. apparently some dude leaked the script they had going and it was all pickle jokes lol
You're very much welcome! Don't let the extent of the mod discourage you, your mod is only as good as you think it is! (And maybe a little better, yes, i'm kind egoist) (also how is Portal Unity Reboot going, we're all holding our breath for it)
Well thank you :P The reboot was kinda put on a long hiatus cause of other responsibilities, but I do plan to eventually get "something" released before I die xD
1:29 how to make a good transition step one: have a bad pc (or just low FPS) step two: spin really fast step three: now your in another game somehow you done did it
It kinda annoyed me that he didnt really show what the mods were about at all most of the time, like boi how am i gonna know what a mod is about when you show me 15 seconds of an elevator ride
That is such a great collection of Mods! So many great mods that I have never heard of. Thank you very much! These are a great inspiration. And so smooth and professional too!
Also, did you know there are many beta mods out? (For the 1st Portal only). And, Chell's Way To Home was featured in the intro but ended up getting skipped over. There is also a Portal-Life mod which is basically altered versions of the portal maps whereas the combine and Xen have taken over APerture.
13:38 Lorelaine would have become one of those mods with an unusual aesthetic, but the author decided to close it and we will never see the release of this masterpiece :_(
Also please make more content like this. It’s a year old but this video was really good and I think a lot of people would enjoy more content like this considering the view count. Thanks for making a video going over all of this also it’s a fantastic trip down memory lane!
@@BradyAus why thank you! I feel I'm not quite prepared myself as I have a seven year old computer. I'll keep this in mind. It might take a few years more before I can get another but maybe that won't be such a problem.
i loved playing "subject X" when it was still mostly vanilla maps with a bit of modding, but the author took them down and replaced them with something completely different, dont remember what exactly extra mechanics it had but the futuristic clean aperture look was awesome
There's also tons of mods on steam greenlight like destroyed aperture. Just gotta love how they all fucking die and before that we've been built up with hype and great hope and expectations to wait for 10 years so nothing happens
We can't forget Narbacular Drop was a game developed by students who then got hired by Valve and created Portal. I feel like a major reason Valve isn't doing a Portal 3 (besides them not being able to count to 3 lol) and Valve is allowing so many new mods is because that's where they started off. And that's okay. It's the creativity and the passion we have for our games that drives new ideas and new concepts. Who knows, this may be someone's next big break. So to all the game developers, the fans, and the players...keep your heads high and keep dreaming; the possibilities are up to you
I think the video would be better if you would have shown some unique mechanics in some of those mods. For example, in "Thinking with Time Machine" part the elements unique to this particular game weren't even there.
There is from what I can tell one outdated Piece of knowledge and that is about Valhalla, as it got a update around May and then had a comment by the creator in December about how it would be playable. Anyways, cool video.
I want to do voice training so I can sound like GLaDOS, Wheatley, Cave Johnson, etc., learn Hammer++ and Source shenanigans, and make the worst best mod out there.
