city actually played 4 2 2 2 in 11/12 usually with aguero partnering dzeko or balotelli upfront. silva and nasri sat behind as inverted wingers, swapping around and creating chaos for the defence.nyaya and barry held in midfield, and the full backs were quite defensive. in 2014, however, it was more of a 4 4 2, with full backs bombing on and 2 out and out strikers again. toure and fernandinho carried city to the title and allowed the forwards and wingers to play with freedom.

good old 4-4-2 that was the only way to play most of my life I don't think you will see it in the premier league in 2018 but I could be wrong I just can't think of a team who plays that way... Dennis bergkamp what a player a true world class player..

I'm happy that they played 3 at the back but they played people in the wrong positions. I expected them to play a 4-3-3 as an expanded inverted 3-4-3. (LF) (RF) Neymar Messi 11. (CF) 10. Suárez 9. (LB) (CAM) (CM) (RB) Alba Iniesta Rakitic Aleix 18. 8. 4. 22. (CDM) Busquets 5. (LCB) (RCB) Umtiti Piqué 23. 3. (GK) Ter Stegen 1. Busquets acts as a makeshift CB, as well as a facilator for building from the back & deconstructing the oppositions attacks in CDM. Alba & Aleix act as wingbacks to provide width on the flanks & an oulet for cross field switch. Also to occupy opposition wingers high up the pitch, crowding the opponents half & coming inside. Obviously there is a high risk of counters due to the spaces they leave in behind. But that's why you have a left & right footed CB playing on their respective sides. If Alba is caught high up the pitch then Umtiti slots into LB & Busquets follows suit & slots into the CB position vacated by Umtiti so until the counter is dealt with or Alba gets back into position. You have a makeshift back four of: Umtiti Busquets Piqué Aleix & vice versa for when Aleix is caught up high. You have a makeshift back four of: Alba Umtiti Busquets Piqué Also Ter Stegen acts as a Libero-sweeper keeper when the back three gets caught but not only does he stop counters & avert danger as a sweeper, his aim is also to recycle possession & start counters as a deep lying Libero Hopefully we see this in the near future & it's so revolutionary it defines Barça's second era, The rebirth of Total Football & Catenaccio. Which I refer to the combination of the two as Pivots & Boxes. It contains concepts from both Total Football & Catenaccio but the concept that is new is that each outfield player, Pivots, are already in or drops into spaces called a Boxes. Where 4 players are surrounding them were they can assume the role of Pivot. So there are 2 types of Boxes 1) One that's already established due to a players position in the formation shown above & 2) that are formed due to players movement, whether they come inside or go wide. Busquets, Iniesta, Rakitic & are examples of the first type but heres the thing, with movement they can find themselves in the second type, surrounded by a different set of teammates. Busquets is initially surrounded by Iniesta, Rakitic, Umtiti & Piqué but with movement to either side he's surrounded by same 4 with inclusion of a fullback & the exclusion of CM or CAM. So if Busquets moves left side he's surrounded by Alba, Iniesta, Umtiti & Pique. If he move to the right Rakitic, Aleix, Umtiti & Pique. This is the main concept of my philosophy, in order to dominate possession, stretch & section the pitch, which also applies to the full backs when they come inside & the CAM or CM go wide. This is the same the wide forwards when they drop deep. Lastly the CBs like Busquets, are surrounded by him the keeper & their sides fullback & central midfielder.

Formations are somewhat important but I find I play better when I'm feeling the game as opposed to trying to think the game. When things are going well it all seems simple and fluid. I don't know, may be a distinction without a difference.

Formations and positions were created so novices could follow the game. In reality on football pitch, positions are constantly changing, they formations are just for show. They are fluent especially when attacking.

For Arsenal '03, you just forgot T. Henry... 44goals+18ass...

Btw, I believe everyone should name a team's formation when they are defending as a rule of thumb. What we usually call 3-5-2 is 99% of the time a 5-3-2. What people call 4-2-3-1 is basically a 4-4-1-1 when they are defending. Are we not going to count the wingers as midfield players just because they suck at defending? The only exception to this is Man City's formation, because there are three attacking midfielders who put pressure up front and do not have the responsability to defend wide.

These tactics are overrated. Man management, skill of players and squad cohesion and work rate are so much more important than where they all stand on the field. The tactics will come naturally.

Afraid your take on Man United's 4-4-2 is a little off. In fact United actually played a 4-4-1-1 in much the same way as Arsenal would go on to do. Cantona and not Bergkamp was the big game-changer in terms of teams playing withdrawn forwards. United's success with that approach, led to the purchase of many infamous second strikers/withdrawn attackers by other teams; Zola for Chelsea, Juninho for Borough and indeed Bergkamp himself for Arsenal.

People are hyping Pep's tactics due to their recent good run. They've simply had easy fixtures. Oh wow he uses his fullbacks in narrower positions. Is that all? That kind of system would be murdered by fast opposition fullbacks and wingers that can stretch the play and force City's narrower fullbacks to spread out, thus creating space. I'd like to see how they cope against Arsenal with a player like Cazorla who would weave through players and distribute to Ozil, and Ozil finding speedsters such as Sanchez, Walcott, Monreal and Bellerin to stretch City's legs. Also with Xhaka on our side, with his long range passing, he could easily nullify the city squeeze in midfield. City have failed to beat Arsenal in the last 5 meetings.

Formations are useless if you don't have the right players for it. Great players can adapt to numerous different formations and still win silverware.

History didn't start in 1992. Take a look at Sir Alf Ramsey - he transformed Ipswich from a mid-table D3(S) to first division champions at the first attempt and then won the World Cup with England largely by changing the role of wide players. Also look at Liverpool's almost total domination of the 80s and Arsenal's (and to a lesser extent Leeds) boring but effective style in the early 90s.

City mostly played a narrow 4-2-2-2 with width coming from the fullbacks in 11/12 Aguero and Tevez/Dzeko upfront
