Pretty cool overview of the history of RTS. One thing I would mention though is that you didn't really touch on the title of the video, where we may be headed in the future

Thank you! I think it will depend largely on the success of Stormgate and ZeroSpace. With the hype they have if they flop it may further the recent lack of interest in the genre from studios and shift us more in the direction of hybrid games with RTS elements rather than true RTS titles. No pressure lol

For me one of the more unique rts games was: Earth 2150 trilogy. Ability to make your own units from the parts was really cool. Too bad it never spread a lot.

@@SpunieBard Last one is earth 2160 from 2005. Game has 3 different factions. But most unique on this game was, that you didnt have prebuild units. You got several unit chassis and several weapons/shields. Each chassis had mount points and you decided what weapons/shield will be mounted on each point. Red Alert and Age of Empires were my introduction to the genre. BUT there is one glaring hole in the timeline: Warzone 2100 and its semi-successors Earth 2140-2160. it was the first true 3D RTS where terrain and height differences mattered!

Battle net didn’t launch with Warcraft 2 that was Diablo. What can make this confusing is that they did launch a battle net edition of Warcraft 2. However, this was even after StarCraft launched in 1998. Warcraft 2 did include multiplayer, of course, but you had to have a network set up or something like gamespy or Kali to play over the internet.

I do understand that we haven't had many major releases in RTS in the last decade but you didn't really touch on the title of "Will RTS Evolve?", I felt like you missed some points as well such as Total War (Rome, Shogun?) or how Dawn of War & Company of Heroes kind of changed the formula from the classical resource-gathering/base building early starts towards more tactical and aggressive gameplay. I really did enjoy the video though, whilst a lot of the games came out before my time (pre-2000's), this video did highlight a lot of the major titles of the scene that I had played/heard of in my youth.

Been trying to provide ideas on my own channel. Some of my suggestions include looking at 4X games and applying them in Real Time, for example taking notes from HoI4, Civilization, Total War, etc.

Nice vid! Personally I think it would've been nice if you would show some footage of the game you are talking about. Still fun to be reminded of all these old games of which many I have played since Dune onwards!

Beyond All Reason is one of the best games currently maintained. It is fantastic, has even greater strategic depth than TA, and the devs are great. Highly recommend to anyone, but if you don't have experience in TA definitely do a some bot games before hopping online!

It looks like you skipped whole decade (2014-2024). It could include games like Northgard, Age of Empires IV, Dune: Spice Wars, Frostpunk or Manor Lords. From the older titles I'm suprised I didn't see games like: The Battle for Middle-earth 1+2, Rise of Nations, Rise of Legends, Company of Heroes 1+2. Otherwise nice video.

Thanks! I think of Frostpunk and Manor Lords as more colony sim than RTS. In the last few years some RTS games have no doubt been fun, but they were few, and none stand out as something we will talk about in 20 years and say "that one had a real impact on the genre". Just my opinion though, I may be wrong. Time will tell!

Just a hint: if you are reading loud any foreign words you can at least try to lisen to it via google translet. Every time I was hearing Herzog Zwei my ears were bleeding.
