As each generation of new Video Games passes, our advancements in technology and design bring us a new frontier of Graphics. The industry’s collective drive for realism has brought us a number of beautifully rendered game worlds. In 2018, Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 embodied the spirit of the Wild West, with a hugely detailed world that had something new to discover around every corner. More recently, last year’s The Last of Us Part II committed to a gruesome realistic depiction of the end of days.
However, despite the constant quest for realism, some games still intentionally choose to go against the grain and defy realism, instead opting for a more artistic approach to games. Today, we’re going to be examining the evolution of Stylized Art in video games - and how technology, art, and pop culture have influenced the games we now treasure as classics.

First you made a vid with Megalovania and now you use a remix. Give this man a medal.

loved the video. learned a lot. games as an art-form really show us that there is no right answer to how something should look. everything works if implemented right

Bit astonished you mentioned cel shading without mentioning the first game to use it - Jet Set Radio's influence and legacy on the industry has been massive.

couldn't help but notice some mistakes in the bottom left, where you showed all the developers + their games. The ones I noticed were that Space invaders as not made by Nintendo but by Taito & Okami was made by Clover studios (a subsidiary of Capcom at the time)

Damn. This is impressively banal. Amazing how little you actually pit into a 17 minute video.
