As an Aussie it intrigues me about how people from other countries go on about how scary our spiders and snakes are when they have full on bears in their forests.
Those animals kill more often than bears do, there’s more of them than bears, some would say bears are cute, and it’s only really the Grizzlies and polar bears you have to look out for. (That and TBF spiders are weird in that the scarier, big hairy ones are harmless while the smaller ones have a small chance of being lethal.)
As an Aussie I would rather go camping in Australia than forests in America that have bears. I've heard to many horror stories from bear attacks which evolved campers, hikers etc.
Another Aussie, and can concur. I live in an area with saltwater crocs, and it always amazed me when Americans get terrified about how we can live near these animals. Thing is, if you keep out of the water, no croc will get you. Bears, however, will get you while you are out walking your dog in the "woods"...
@@generaldissatisfaction5397 The local black bears are more of a danger to the trash bins and to pets than they are to people. People are more dangerous to bears than bears are to people as well. Bears sometimes get hit by cars on lonely roads on dark nights out in forested areas.
@@freightshayker Bears are tanky animals that often steal kills from other predators. They come up on a kill after another large animal has expended the energy to take down the prey and run the killer off and eat the food with less effort. The bears that could smell food more quickly and easily could find it faster, eat more, put on weight and were able to survive their rather rough mating season to have more offspring which carry the trait for a better sense of smell. The trait was naturally selected along with the bears' other successful survival traits, such as being big omnivores with a long reach and a scary maw.
@@freightshayker Ohhhh! You're one of THOSE evolution deniers. Pumpkin, human beings and modern apes had a common ancestor, that yes, was an ape. Modern apes will not evolve into human beings, they will evolve into a more derived apes. Just like dogs will not evolve into foxes, even though they both have a common cainid ancestor. Will modern apes evolve into a more derived form that has some of the same traits as human beings? Possibly, but that would depend on what kinds of environmental pressures the species encounter over time and if a population can survive those pressures. We don't have a great track record on that score. That would then be convergent evolution, like penguins and cormorants...or like bears and wolverines! If you're going to swim in the big kids pool, try to be civil. If you can't be, go back to the baby pool but don't pee here.
“Only trained accredited rangers are allowed to hold a koala. This is a sensible law as it protects koalas from being stressed because a human wants to give it a hug” Lol. I can’t think of many bears have that problem. You’ve definitely failed at bearhood if humans want to hug you.
Never stop these videos please. They really are the unique part of RU-vid only one person is doing. Looking forward to seeing evolution of humans, minks( wolverines/weasels), and birds
I agree calling any animal "stupid" for adapting to a particular lifestyle makes no sense. I do think it's sad though that so many other endangered animals are usually snubbed in terms of conservation money in favor of the giant panda, which is almost certainly going extinct in the not-too-distant future. I wish people would realize that just because an animal isn't cute and cuddly doesn't mean it's not ecologically important to conserve. Still gonna be a sad day when we lose pandas though :(
It is called charismatic species, conservation for charismatic species would protect their natural habitat in turn protect everything where they supposed to live. This is a well known conservation tactic, this is why animals like Elephants, Tigers, Rhinos etc... are the faces of conservation even if white rhinos are plenty in the wild. They have wide ranges and they protect many species in turn. A real example would be Tiger reserves in India, despite having billion people that needs resources, they managed to protect large pockets of forests for tiger habitat because tigers are charismatic.
There’s multiple factors that make pandas stupid mind you, they don’t really care about their offspring, they aren’t very cute, they’re mean, and I don’t think it’s fair that he’s calling people who simply dislike a species of animal fat :/
@@saphire1sababy378they’re cute so they are the poster child for conservation efforts. Easier to gain support if people think cute animals are threatened, unfortunately.
@@RsFrag3d idk why people find them cute tbh but I guess so, there’s so many other cute animals it could be though. I still dislike that he is just going on about how people are fat dumb people just bc they dislike a certain animal. It’s very weird.
Was waiting for you to cover bears, as they are one of my favorite groups of mammals! They're such cool and interesting animals that can both be cute and terrifying haha! (And funny if you find the right videos.) Also damn, was not expecting the complete and utter destruction of panda haters when discussing them. That was legendary lmao. Great video as always, but I wonder if you'll do seals next. Would like to see you cover them and talk about their prehistoric relatives like Pontolis and Pelagiarctos!
@@MastemaJack Okay? Still don't think it is something to bring up in a video talk about bear evolution, as he never done it in any of the others. Feels out of place here and is better suited for someone like Casual Geographic to bring up.
We know pandas are too lazy and stupid to hunt, but their digestive tracts are specialized for meat eating. Wonder how they would fair under a meat diet?
I am very offended :/ I was enjoying these videos but you didn’t have to call me fat just for disliking pandas, I just don’t like them and they’re kinda dumb I mean besides their diet and deciding to live in an area with very limited food they also don’t care about their children and are mean and aren’t even that cute, it’s just an opinion it doesn’t mean I’m a fat lazy hater :( I’m generally nice and I’m not fat I’m in the weight range I’m supposed to be in and I don’t hate just to hate, I just happen to dislike pandas 😒
@@Dr.IanPlect so there classed as something then over time there range of food they eat grows/expands but what they are classed as doesn’t change? How come? Why not class them on there current diet?
@@jonathankerr4859 You'll find that modern classification has that built into it; the primitive state defines the group even though many members may have evolved out of that trait. As for why, I agree, I protest it too.
@@jonathankerr4859 indeed! I'll give you another example. Turtles are anapsid, that means they don't have a temporal fenestra, a skull opening on the side. Yet, they are in a group called Diapsida, animals with 2 tf. The reasoning is as above; the primitive state defines the group even though many members may have evolved out of that trait. In this case, the ancestors of turtles (still within the same group) were diapsid and turtles evolved to lose the openings.
I am a marathon runner and I have been saying that we should let the pandas go. There are more ecologically important species that are endangered. We should put the resources that are going to pandas to those species. I feel like 5:00 is a little bit of projection.
No it’s mean and unfair, we don’t call people who dislike rats and pigeons dirty and disease ridden just because that’s how they view rats and pigeons so why do it to people just because they dislike a more popular animal

@Curious Dr David Berlinski says there is something on the order of 50,000 missing fossils for an individual specie to support what you just said. Keep looking
@@freightshayker The fact that you sourced a guy from a Creationist organizations rather than a true biologist and paleontologist from credible science organization is so stupid and sloppy, the 50000 missing species can just be explained by something like preservation bias, and here is the definition of preservation bias : "factors that affect the potential for an organism to become a fossil" And of course, there is load of factor that affects the fossil preservation, like the environment for example, most of the best preserve fossil are found in caves, tar pit, and desert, but we found no fossil in Amazon rainforest, because rainforest has an acidic soil

I still remember watching as a little kid a documentary about the Short-faced bear that stuck with me to this day. It had a very silly fight between the bear and a Ground sloth that veguely resembled a boxing match.
Yeah it was oddly memorable considering how bad it was. Who knows, maybe one day we'll get a documentary about the largest specimen of Arctotherium augustidens, a very large, old male with numerous injuries sustained throughout his life.
@@natebrodeur1765 I don't think Prehistoric Predators was that bad, sure it had repeated footage a lot of the time but then again other TV documentaries did that before like The Most Extreme on Animal Planet.
@@theicepickthatkilledtrotsk658 yeah I know what you mean. I miss the days when Animal Planet was exactly what it was actually about until they took down all those fun, educational, and silly programs like Planet's Funniest Animals or The Jeff Corwin Experience or even the OG 4 seasons of Meerkat Manor (though admittedly season 3 was pretty dark because of the deaths in that season as we all know why) in 2012.
It’s like Africans in Congo eating chimpanzees as bushmeat even though over 98% of our genome is shared with chimps/bonobos. And in turn it’s like me eating my neighbor across the street and not in the good way… lol
I only recently found your channel. Your videos are really well put together, straight forward visuals and even though you are a fast talker the narration is very clear. Your early video on the different branches of the mammal family tree was also really good.
I love and appreciate the fast narration…when a narrator speaks too slowly, I find it hard to concentrate, especially if there aren’t subtitles to string the words together more closely. People say it’s relaxing but it just frustrates me
A Panda's diet isn't actually that poor and contains about the same amount of protein as most other bears. This is due to the fact that they eat different parts of the plant at different times of the year.
Plus from what I've heard, Bamboo is a fast growing plant species( a type of Woody grass?) So the Pandas have food that doesn't take months or years to grow like a tree.
One thing I’ve noticed about pandas is because of their herbivorous bamboo diet they’ve unfortunately ended up in the prey category along with other herbivores like sheep and zebras and are frequently hunted by snow leopards clouded leopards wolfs and surprisingly asiatic black bears. Poor cuddly bamboo eaters I send them all my love to them as they after all are my fav animal plus animal origins if your seeing this comment then I suggest you atta make a video about the pandas subfamily in greater detail it would be amazing for everyone like myself great job dude you rock😉👍
Not really.. only when they are infants or not yet fully grown. "Although adult giant pandas have few natural predators other than humans, young cubs are vulnerable to attacks by snow leopards, yellow-throated martens,[76] eagles, feral dogs, and the Asian black bear. Sub-adults weighing up to 50 kg (110 lb) may be vulnerable to predation by leopards.[" wiki
@@Gayacegunslinger Not by name, though. Grolar is specific to a grizzly hybrid. Kodiaks are not grizzlies, both are brown bear subspecies. It could be Kolar or Podiak!
Bear keep bear in check. Not man. That always makes me respect them even more when I think about how cute they are. Real cute till there eating you alive, bears love to eat their prey while it’s alive, it’s what they do.
I've heard the same. Heck they showed that bear taking down a buffalo. I've also seen a video of a bear running uphill - gaining speed. Yea, I think I'll continue to stay out of their area if I'm only carrying 357.
Ehh no. Pandas being dependent entirely on one food source is not a good thing and never will be. It makes them too dependent and completely unable to adapt when something inevitably kills off their single food source. They were doomed to extinction the moment they took on that food source. Its just a matter of when
The reason pandas are going extinct is because female pandas only ovulate when they watch male pandas fight, so they are only fertile if they watch two male pandas fight over them. Since most pandas live in zoos now where males are seporated to stop them from fighting the females dont ovulate and as such they dont breed anymore. The problem with pandas is humans, not their food source. They existed for millions of years on bamboo and were fine.
what bear species went extinct in Mexico? I know about the Californian bear that went extinct, Ursus Arctos Californicus, but I did not know about a Mexican Grizzly bear
Cuteness is very powerfull evolutionary adaptation - flowers, butterflies, etc. Just count how many wolfs are today and how many corgis - who is winning? Panda evolved to be protected by apes - cool adaptation)
I found this beary interesting. I had to paws the video many time to absorb the info. Bears ursa-ch fascinating animals. (I hope I'm not black now. That would be un-bear-able.) Ok, ok. Enough panda-ering.
Those who think that pandas are stupid because they eat bamboo sticks have not understood what evolution is. Many carnivorous animals they evolved into omnivores and then into herbivores, and other way round. Pandas didn't become vegetarians out of laziness but to survive. One example is Darwin's sloth, an ancient (and huge) cousin of modern sloths, which ate meat. While modern sloths eat sprouts and fruit.
