The Evolution of the Spurs Offense: 1999-2014 

That 2013-2014 offense still amazes me. The heat just looked so lost and the spurs looked so calm. Sometimes it seemed like the cameraman couldn't even keep up with the ball.

This is exactly why Pop us the greatest coach in NBA history. He was not only able to win in different eras but he was able to evolve with the times and still dominate.

From defensive juggernauts to an offensive blitzkrieg, Pop and the Spurs are just ridiculous these past 3 decades.

I'm gonna be so sad when Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli, Tony Parker, and Gregg Poppavich go away :( It's amazing to see them all working together and seeing that ball move around so quickly

It is indeed a rare thing to see any players to take a long open 2 off a catch and shot. Noadays, I only see that in a Knicks game.

The last few seconds got me emotional seeing how much Pop and Duncan love each other. Pop has said Duncan has been his favorite player to coach of all time and it shows. Nice to see someone as serious as Pop show his soft side from time to time to show his appreciation for his favorite player that he raised on the NBA court from a young man with potential to the best power forward to ever play the game.

I remember something Dave Odom (or maybe Randolph Childress) said about Duncan back in the 1990s. That he really wanted to be a point guard to get his teammates involved. The Spurs system was always Duncan, not Pop, whether it was skip passes from the low post, high low action, pinch post, or passing out of the pick and roll. It's just a matter of how much Duncan's coaches trusted him to be the fulcrum of the offense. Even by big-man standards, Duncan's passing was boring (compared to someone like Sabonis), so he never got the credit he deserved.

I really appreciate this video coach Nick. The Spurs truly are something special in an era of star-centered and isolation-based teams. Their unbeatable defense and lightning fast motion offense make them a team that is incredibly hard to beat, and truly exemplifies the basic principles of basketball. It makes me proud to be from San Antonio and a lifelong Spurs fan. Go Spurs go!

Great video Coach! Pop's gotta go down as the greatest coach of all time when all is said and done. You could say that he's been lucky to have one of the greatest players of all time as his player but that swings both ways and Duncan's been lucky to have Pop as his coach his entire career. You could release another 'Coaches Porn' video based on the 2014 Spurs offense and it would be like a feature length film. And the way he has instilled a family mentality with his guys is admirable. I think that Pop and Duncan go out with a bang next June, with Duncan playing the role of '03 David Robinson, passing on the torch to the human Sharktopus in Kawhi Leonard and the Tim Duncan remix in Lamarcus Aldridge. But again, major props for going to the effort of making this vid, Coach Nick. As a basketball fan, it doesn't get any better than Spurs basketball.

3's and ball movement and two good wing players and a solid big man... this gives you some insight why Steve Kerr's Warriors won 2015 he learned this in his later days with the spurs, and of cos in his days broadcasting the spurs.

Thank you so much. Living in Germany back in the early 2000s meant maybe catching 3-4 games a year. Always condensed, most of the time there were just highlights and nothing else. So naturally being a Spurs fan in 2002 meant looking up scores, reading basketball magazines and maybe get some information online, but nothing a 13 year old kid could really do, especially since the games that you could watch were on Pay TV and I couldn't afford that. So seeing some old footage of all the championships I missed, because even now they are hard to find on the internet, I really appreciate you showing them and commenting on it. So thank you very much Coach Nick, I appreciate this video a lot.

Great video! I love the breakdown of each era. It really shows how they evolved through each championship. Pop sets a great example that you're never too old to stop learning. It seems like he continued to learn how to get better every year whether they won or not. @BBALLBREAKDOWN

Coach Pop been setting trends. He was the 1st to really start resting his players even got fined $250,000 for it. Then the next year a lot of coaches start to do it. David Stern was a buster for that one.

As a Warriors fan I respect the hell out of the Spurs and Coach Pop. San Antonio has been the one team that I felt had the Warriors dialed in over the past few years, both offensively and defensively. I was relieved Golden State never had to face them in the Playoffs.

What an amazing video

I always hated how everyone associates today's style of offense with the Golden State Warriors when the Spurs should be the ones who deserve the credit. Their player and ball movement in 2014 was a thing of absolute beauty. The only differences (apart from motion vs. read-and-react offenses) was that the Warriors shot more 3s and played a faster pace.

Great video coach Nick, lifetime basketball junkyard (age 51), and I'd like to add another reason for the rapid evolution of offense from powerball (80s Lakers and Celtics are iconic for this) to today's spread, movement offense. BOTTOM LINE, IN ORDER TO PLAY POWERBALL AND WIN YOU HAVE TO HAVE A JABBAR, MCHALE & Parish, Moses Malone,Olajuwon, Duncan, Robinson, Shaq. Since those guys come around every 10 or more years, you can't expect to ever get one. Nobody knew how to win without a HOF (or two) big guy. From 1980-88, EVERY NBA Champion had one or more dominant big men. When the 1988 expansion occurred (Charlotte, Minnesota), teams knew the chances of ever getting a dominant big men went from small to hopeless. Detroit,, then Chicago, saw the crystal ball, and changed the game to a pressure defense to create offense, and then offenses like the triangle to create shots without requiring an automatic double team on the dominant big men. Since 1988, power ball reared its head only for Olajuwon, (94-95), Shaq (with triangle principles but plenty of straight power post up) in LA.( 2000-02), and early Duncan championships. There is not a single dominant power post up player left, therefore, adapt did. I would gladly love to hear your thoughts, good, bad, or indifferent

Excellent video. The constant movement of both player and ball in 13-14 was pure basketball beauty for the entire series. Love that you mentioned Parker's "new fundamental" habit of wrong foot layups. These are vastly underrated across basketball. Have only recently started watching your vids, I'm curious as to what else you classify as new fundamentals?

Just a little FYI. Phil Jackson wanted to put an asterisk on the 99 season because reporters were trying to compare Popovich's Spurs to Phil's Lakers since both teams went through each other on the way to a championship. Phil Jackson said you'd have to put an asterisk on the 99 season BECAUSE HE WASN'T THE COACH that year when the Spurs swept the Lakers in the playoffs.

Man, i'm gonna miss so much, Popovich what a coach, man. i fell in love with how well they moved the ball. I mean come on, i want some more years of that Spurs offense, i hope i get to see more teams like these nowadays.

2013-14 version of the spurs in the finals is by far the best team basketball I ever saw and I don't know how basketball can look any better and be more effective on offense. it was just perfection and almost scary how 5 different players can trully look like one on the court.
