This is Kazakhstan, and yes I know what you are all thinking, and yes in the interest of full disclosure we are definitely cashing in on the hype surrounding the second borat, but in fairness so is the nation itself.
Even still this country is so much more than that with one of the most, hmm let's call it exciting economies in the world.
What was once a mistreated soviet state has now gone onto be the largest and wealthiest economy in central Asia, one that is welcoming foreign trade, international investment, and advanced development of technologies to continue this growth into the future.
On top of this, it is a central member of one of the most interesting, and influential however overlooked trading blocks operating in the world today.
But of course, it has not been without its difficulties, it may very well be the most prosperous nation in central Asia, but central Asia is a rough old neighborhood to be the king of.
What with It being home to some dream destinations like, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, and also neighboring countries like Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
By the way, a side note is that “stan” when translated from Persian just means a land of. So Kazakhstan kind of just translates to a land of Kazaks, which are the ancestral people of the nation.
Hopefully, that gives some clarity to this rather samey naming scheme in and around this area.
But all of this is to say that Kazakhstan hasn’t and won’t have it easy in its quest to become a properly developed nation but that doesn’t mean that it can’t do it.
So to see what is behind this countries stubborn development we need to look at a few key areas.
What went on under Soviet rule?
What has the country been up to since the collapse?
what is their plan for the future?
Oh, and of course while we are here we have to put the nation on the Economics Explained national leaderboard.

Still a valid question. You can ask the same thing, what’s up with the “land” thing. I suspect, without researching, it has something to do with lands speaking Germanic languages originally or settled by such peoples in the instance of New Zealand.

@Abdul van Meert depends on what you mean by harmed. Demographicly, it is certain that USSR brought only deaths to the nation, and Semipalatinsk has made situation only worse. On other hand, most essential infrastructure was built during Soviet era, and it was very important to economic recovery, so it is really hard to estimate how good would Kazakhstan be without USSR
@PeterJavi
@PeterJavi 3 года назад
@@anushervontabarov8568 The Kazakhs got lucky they were able to take over all the infrastructure so swiftly. Without the USSR they would've built it up themselves, not be used as a nuclear bomb testing site and have its people working more in emerging industries, or work in more advanced agriculture
@anushervontabarov8568
@anushervontabarov8568 3 года назад
@Abdul van Meert yeah, so that is way it is still very controversial topic here. Certainly, over time all infrastructure would have been built, and industries would have been formed, but it probably would took another 50 years or so. In long term, stable and homogeneous demografics that wasn't affected by Soviet mass migration, and large pool of people that wasn't starved to death during first periods of USSR, combined with high fertility rates typical for not post-soviet developing countries would have been a great combination that would have probably allowed Kazakhstan to be something like mini China of Central Asia, but all of it requires a hypothetical stable government that, without post-soviet polical elite, could have wisely use all advantages to benefits of the nation.

As a citizen of Kazakhstan I was very impressed how accurate the video explained the problem in Kazakhstan and some historical time line. However, I think its worth mentioning that Kazakh used to be nomads (didn't farm much) ; therefore, most of the Kazakh never needed to learn how to farm. Eventually once the Soviet came and took all the cattle (that's at least 10 million cattle dependenting the source). It caused a great starvation which approximately killed 40-70% of the population (there is no exact number even in our history books but some mention that's approximately at least 2 million people). As a result, Kazakhs became minority on their own land, inexplictly turing them as a second class citizens. Consequently, till this day Kazakhstan workforce and population is quite small. I also want to mention that recently Kazakhstan opened its financial centre. Its called AIFC (Astana International Financial Centre). (source: aifc.kz/faq/) AIFC is a financial hub for Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the Middle East, West China, Mongolia and Europe. Objectives of the AIFC are as follows: to attract investment into the economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan by creating an attractive environment for investment in the financial services sphere; to develop a securities market in the Republic of Kazakhstan and integrate it with international capital markets; to develop insurance markets, banking services, Islamic finance, financial technologies, electronic commerce and innovative projects in the Republic of Kazakhstan; to develop financial and professional services based on international best practice; to achieve international recognition as a financial centre. Thanks for truly video about Kazakhstan. I agree with most of facts told here because I am from Kazakhstan. Corruption and old authoritarian regime are main factors negatively effecting to country development now. The population is small around 19 million but poverty is high, the average salary is $250-300 per month. Some people get more than $1,000 per month but their number is very very low (). Corruption is everywhere here, foreign investors especially Chinese one learned this vulnerability to bribe authorities. Many local people (including Kazaks) started immigrating for better lifes and future of their children to Europe, US, Turkey, Canada etc. The regime is unable to solve the problems cause it is fully corrupted, no trust, no will. It is frustrating thing knowing how much money they wasted for only one city and finally named it after dictator president. No words here, judge for yourself.

I've had my eyes on KZ for a while now (and their ladies, as they're gorgeous) and the biggest thing it really needs is a massive improvement in infrastructure, both road and rail. If it can seriously upgrade those two things, it can position itself to handle the trade from Europe and China, as well as take care of a potential increase in tourism, as it has a lot of natural beauty to showcase. Its people are literate and educated, as well as very hospitable. The culture is a real melting pot and politically, whilst its still pretty much a 'managed' democracy (in other words, its a dictatorship disguised as a democracy), its relatively stable. The potential is absolutely massive.

I remember a fun Kazakhstan thought experiment a few years ago on alternative history. what do you think will happen if after the bronze ago collapse? the territory that would become Kazakhstan stapped places with a location in the middle of the pacific sea. it was decided that the landmass of Kazakhstan would become a trading power as it is between America and Asia. ware the location that Kazakhstan use to be would have been a lot larger the Caspian Sea will become the main trade link between Europe and China, as well as help greenify a large part of central Asia which will allow new and interesting civilizations to form on both sides of the expanded Caspian sea.
