I never lost my sense of smell when I had covid but I experienced the same loss of taste sensation where you can taste like the saltiness or sweetness of the food but not the actual flavor every thing just tasted the same and it was like that for me for about 2 months. Also my son got it first and he was really sick for about 12 hours and then he was perfectly fine
