This. This right here is why I love movies and storytelling. It doesn't change the world. It doesn't stop wars or diseases but we all for a couple of hours, are entertained, escape, learn something from the story and feel the same emotions. In movies we all come into an agreement. We all laugh at the jokes, gasp in surprises, scream in horror, cheer when the good guy wins and cry when something breaks our hearts.
The phrase which killed me in this movie was when Tom Hanks ask John: "On the day of my judgment, when I stand before god and he asks me why did I kill one of his true miracles....what am I going to say? That it was my job?" Brutal!!
John Coffey was too good for this world. Rest in Peace, John. And you, Michael Clarke Duncan. No one could have played John more brilliantly than you did. R.I.P.

@@samgoodwin6495 I don't think he knows who or what he is. But I do like your theory. I don't think that's the case, but I understand what you saying. It's a nice thought. Even while about to die, he tries to bring others comfort.
What hurts most about this scene for me is not the execution - it's the fact that an angel would rather die than see the pain and suffering in the world :'(
But still would at least know and explain Wild Bill. Could've even told them he confessed to it and that's what caused Percy to shoot him before going becoming unresponsive. Others would most likely back him up on it@tradde11
Based on a true story of a 14-year-old black boy killed back in the 40s, falsely convicted and sentenced to death by electric chair. They didn’t cover the boys face out of fear of the dark. Stephen King wrote the novel based on that. And the use someone like Michael Clark Duncan, with an obvious, menacing stature and appeal, but the innocence and delicate nature of the young boy, to convey this idea. He really wanted to drive the point home.
John Coffey is a Christ figure. He appeared out of nowhere, as if he had just “fallen out of the sky.” He had foreknowledge of future events. He can see the good or evil that is in men’s hearts. He can heal illness and afflictions and resurrect the dead (if it’s not too late). He is innocent, with a pure soul, yet he is made to suffer and die because of the sins and wickedness of others. And even his initials are J.C., just like Jesus. (Recall the scene where John is watching his first-ever flicker show, and the light from the movie projector is illuminating his head from behind, just like a halo: The Christian symbolism is unmistakable.)
RIP Michael Clarke Duncan It’s also ironic that Stephen King is thought of as a horror story writer but 2 of the best story driven movies ever(at least 2) are his stories. This and Shawshank Redemption are 2 of everyone’s favorite movies.
Wow, I was shaky on this one. It's hard enough when you see a single person upset, but a whole chorus is practically unsurvivable. Only the tin man could come away unscathed.
No matter how many times ive watched different youtubers watch this movie it doesnt get easier you know....bo matter how yard i try to fight back the tears i cant
I feel like this is the sort of storytelling that can change us. Everyone sees that scene and sobs; everyone feels the injustice; everyone says, "No, no, no" and wants to reach into the screen and stop it. If we can hold on to that feeling, if we can remember it and then act on it, we can change the world.
When he says, "I'm sorry for what i am" it always destroys me. That might be the saddest line I've ever heard. If there's one that's worse, I don't want to ever hear it.
A grown ass man like myself who knows its just a movie and everyone is alright…this is the one though, this is the movie that kills me…this is the scene that kills me
This scene. This movie. The acting, the music, the directing, the cinematography. The fact that Paul doesn't close John's eyes after he places the St. Christopher necklace back on him because he's afraid of the dark. If you don't cry during this movie, I don't believe you're Human.
I disagree. People process their grief in different ways. Now, if someone was mocking this scene, then yes, it's true that a person doesn't have a heart.
If I ever want to instantly mummify myself, I'm going to watch GREEN MILE, UP, and DEAD POET's SOCIETY in one sitting. The accumulated crying jag will literally suck all of the moisture out of my body through my eyeballs.
There are either people who watch this scene and cry like a waterfall, or who divert their eyes trying to not see this yet can picture it through audio and cry like a waterfall Along with Up's opening scene, Intersteller's message scene, one of the most emotional scenes of cinema history
And father of the year goes to you my man ❤ I hope one day she reflects on this and appreciates the moment..... your daughter clearly has a pure heart and soul if a movie like this can make her feel like that. I'm a grown ass 30 year old man and I can never come out of finishing it and not be crying 😭😭
I remember seeing this in the theater 20+ years ago. You could hear people sobbing during this scene - me included. I’ve never been to a more emotionally charged movie. ❤❤
I’m not a cryer. But this movie had me blubbing like a baby. So much so, that I haven’t been able to watch it again. Same thing with The Elephant Man. Injustice towards the innocent is my Achilles heel. ❤
Geez, I never noticed John saying "I'm in heaven" over and over, and it just got me all over again. I think I was too upset all the previous times to hear him say it.
Always a sure thing to cry on this movie, I saw it the first time when I was about 12 and soaked my pillow in tears, I was so embarrassed until I saw everyone else watching was crying too
Well, you've done it again Mr. Lebowski. Great job with one of the saddest scenes ever put to film. "Are you surprised by my tears, sir? Strong men also cry. Strong men. Also cry."
Your clip selection is so good. To build up the reactor's emotions, in a scene where they are high to start and don't really change that much, can not easy and you made it look seamless. Great job.
OMG, this is a phenomenal movie, and I don't care who you are, anyone who said they didn't cry at the end of this, is either lying, or they have no heart. And I cried all over again with you guys, and girls.
That's not fair to claim someone that doesn't cry during a movie, regardless of the content, has no heart. Surely you don't mean that literally... Many wonderfully caring and compassionate people simply do not cry during fictional storytelling. There's nothing wrong with that.
A truly pure soul that this world got but didnt deserve 😭 all great reactions here i just wanna give y'all a hug. Mad respect for the men in these reactions that werent afraid to mask thier emotions. That itself takes guts good work kings and queens ❤❤
You do an amazing job putting these clips together. I only watch these reactors as my only source of entertainment when I get some down time. My tv isn't even tuned in to receive anything when I get to chill I open RU-vid app and see who has reacted to what but I'm enjoying going back and watching these best bits. Keep up the excellent work.
Everytime I watch these sad reactions videos,in a small way it restores my faith in humanity, not everyone is so cynical & heartless....& Much respect to all the men not afraid to show emotions
does anyone remember the Oscars in 2000? Michael Clark Duncan and Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense) both lost to Michael Caine? and Billy Crystal hosted and did his "I can read the nominees minds" bit..... when the camera moved to Michael Clark Duncan's angelic face..... Billy Crystal said.............. "I see white people".
Thx for posting this, Mr. Lebowski. It really wasn't necessary. P.S. In early 2022, I watched each reaction to this scene. I watched as many of them as I possibly could, and it made me lose all hope😔💔
This movies should come with a warning. Many movies/stories can: scare you, make you feel happy, sad, or inspired. But dam few, like this one, can actually hurt.
I reacted this way,and so did my friend when i showed it to him,pn Netflix. Eveything about the movie was stunning, the story, the acting, the cinematography, just the whole package.
John's fear of the dark is like how children are scared of the dark because they fear that monsters hide in the dark. With John being an angel or Christ-like figure from God, his fear is understandable because he's scared of the demons that hide in the dark. John pleading to not let them put him in the dark still brings a tear to my eye.
Same! I don’t trust anyone who says this movie didn’t make them absolutely bawl (or at the very LEAST well up), because they’re either a goddamn liar or a complete sociopath 😅😭
A lot of you are saying how great the actors are and I agree, but.....................mostly I think we should thank Stephen King for writing the story, that man is a genius ☺
it was because of this i went & watched this movie myself. even knowing what happens. didn't make it any easier to watch. never thought i'd cry in a stephen king movie.
