The term fingerstyle guitar covers a whole lot of musical genres. Although you often see guitarists who call themselves fingerstyle players performing popular/contemporary music, classical, bossa nova, Travis picking, flamenco, and latin jazz guitarists are also playing "fingerstyle". But regardless of the style of music you like to play, this right hand arpeggio exercise (from the classical guitar world!) is a MUST for all guitarists who play with their fingers! It's a weird and seemingly complex pattern, but even beginners can get this pattern down and memorize it to jump start their right hand dexterity, control, and speed. Once you can do this, I'm challenging you here to add another pattern to it and seamlessly combine the two. Get the full guitar tab of this video with each exercise fully notated below. Thanks for watching!

Bert Jansch used the first pattern in his lovely tune “Tell Me What Is True Love”. Very cool learning where he (maybe) got the idea from. Thanks for all the work you put into making such great content for us all!

I finally logged in last night and I reviewed your array. Man I am not ready for most of that stuff because I will have to review all those transitional chords. I will have to slow the tempo down and look at the tab to know where to put my fingers.

Scot, to follow up about my question about learning the fretboard, I really do not know where to start. I guess I would like to know where the individual notes are located first, then learn the various places where the chords are to be found. I can almost draw the circle of 5ths on paper, but would it be a requirement to know the three notes that make up each chord? My question is which direction should I start swimming in this vast sea of music? Your estudio 2 is marvelous, because you demonstrate how to preposition enroute to the dreaded barr chord. For years I thought a barre was an open chord that you played in a bar, and I can't wait until I get to Spanish Romance. What should I study at this point in the process. What do I have to know or learn?

Hi Bill, first you need to know the natural notes (no sharps or flats yet, those are easy once you know the natural notes) on the 6th and 5th string. It’s most important to know them on the 6th and 5th strings because that is where we will be rooting most of our chords and scales even if we only play a portion of the chord. Do you know the formula for how natural notes occur? Also you need to know the 5 scale patterns (the major and minor scale). Send me a note inside the membership and I can point you to some videos.

Scot I see a lot of systems and patterns used to memorize the fretboard. What system do you recommend?

By memorize, do you mean scale patterns, chords, or simply the note names?
