@jfm14

I think there's a natural spectrum of empathy among humans. Some people are empathetic to the extreme and those people are labeled empaths. They're sponges for others' emotions. In my experience, it can be quite debilitating. What's frustrating is that it's become this label that people (many of whom are probably not empaths) self-apply in an attempt to tell the world they're special... or to promote spiritual services/products. It's starting to become as meaningless as New Age concepts like starseeds, indigo children, etc.

I’m super late but here’s the thing. Aside from calling sociopaths “gross and weird and creepy” this ‘therapist’ also constantly reinforces how good they are at mimicking emotions, how charming they are, and how skilled at manipulating they are. Then spends two minutes with Jake and goes “Well he sure seems nice, I guess he’s not a sociopath”
@s.g.7572
@s.g.7572 3 года назад
Yeah lol, even if this had any merit as a study of mental health (which it doesn't), these two just prove that they are totally unequipped to deal with the hypothetical storybook image of a sociopath they've constructed for themselves. It's like if they convinced themselves that Jake Paul was a vampire, spent five hours analysing all the dangers and traits of vampires, then Jake Paul turns up on their doorstep asking them to invite him in and they just go "yeah sure, cute hellhound lol".

@@cat-le1hf I wouldn’t think sociopaths would generally bond with other sociopaths. It’s not like a hobby or alternative lifestyle, it’s a mental disorder that is frequently crippling (or lucrative, that usually depends on who your dad is and which hedge fund he founded) and it prevents a person from feeling empathy and many of the other emotions that would commonly be associated with joy. In my experience, sociopaths treat most (if not all) relationships as transactional. The moment they stop receiving what they need from the other person, then their association with that person is disposable. I dunno if Dawson and/or Paul fit those characteristics, but they both seem like they’re deeply narcissistic in many respects, so I guess there’s plenty of toxic water in the infinity pool.

Claiming to be an empath is a form of emotional manipulation. It positions you as the arbiter of emotion, it allows you to easily deny being arrogant or ignorant by just repeating "lol I'm an empath, and you think I don't feel lmao stupid." People also associate the word empath with emotional safety, making it a claim many abusers will make in order to get you to let down your walls. Them red flags are for a reason

Might be anecdotal but a psychotherapist should never be able to utter such primitive dribble, let alone on camera, knowing that millions will watch. Monsters are not born but made and they are made by humans. Oh, and they are also still human. @@BigJoel Sorry! I didn't mean to imply that YOU were framing them as documentaries. I meant his calling them documentaries in the first place is misleading. In my opinion, they have value as entertainment pieces, and although could count as documentaries by technicality (similar to how Fox News isn't actually a news show; it's a self-admitted [by Roger Ailes, one of the founders] entertainment show that titles itself as news), they lack the attributes that make a decent documentary.

As someone who was actually diagnosed with ASPD, Shane's entire documentary and the attitude of that therapist just grated on me SO DAMN much. Like, so much of the general public seems to forget that those with commonly called "Sociopathic" traits are just.....people. I'm just a person trying to live my life, not some insidious villain who wishes to bring pain and suffering upon all who come across me. I have an empathy problem. That's it. It's the same as having a depression problem or an anxiety problem; you go to a therapist, deal with it, and live your life. And to see people like me portrayed as axe murderers, robots, and evil creatures not just in Shane's videos, but in regular media as well, is honestly kind of dehumanizing and insulting. I have friends and family I love (And YES, I do love goddamnit, I just have to choose to), and just because I can't empathize doesn't mean I can't sympathize or cognitively understand another person's feelings. I don't understand WHY you're sad, but I can understand you ARE sad and HELP that as much as I can. Shane's videos trying to "prove" whether or not Jake Paul is a 'sociopath' should just be renamed "I don't really know any sociopaths or what they are, but I know they're BAAAAD so if Jake is one, he's a BAAAD person and vice versa", and it really shows how little people (And even many therapists!) know about us! Bad people aren't always "sociopaths". You don't need to have a mental illness to be a bad person, being a bad person is a CHOICE, just like how I choose to be a good person.
@redhillbones7672
@redhillbones7672 5 лет назад
There's at least one study that suggests (and I hope it gets replicated with a larger sample size) that people who are deemed to have "no empathy" and who can watch horrific things with atypical neuro response to them often can show "empathy" neurologically if prompted to look at the same imagery with sympathy in mind. It created a new theory that people previously deemed to have "no empathy" simply have the empathy part of the brain switched off by default and can 'switch' them on, for lack of a better term, whereas a neurotypical person is the opposite. Even an "empathetic" person has a limit to who they find empathy for, starting with close friends and family and ending with large groups of complete strangers on a scale. Humans, period, aren't designed to empathize with everyone around them.
@SuperPrettyPink101
@SuperPrettyPink101 5 лет назад
I can relate to that a lot, I don't have ASPD, I'm autistic, and it makes empathy difficult in many ways. I often offend people accidentally, believing I'm just being honest, and when I'm told that I was being really rude and need to apologise, I don't. I can't help but think they are stupid to be offended by honesty, by facts, so I don't apologise, because I don't feel remorse. I never hurt people on purpose, because it's wrong, but if I can't relate to a persons sadness, it's impossible for me to really see it as valid. I know I SHOULD apologise, it's the "right" thing to do, but I can't lie, I hate being fake, so I just try to avoid making the same mistake twice. I comfort people if they're upset, I care about animals, I even stare at the ground when I'm walking so I don't step on ants, which is ridiculously overly empathetic to many people. I believe I'm a good enough person, not because of my emotions or lack thereof but because I choose to be as good as I can be. Our choices define us, not our "feelings".

Then, when I recieved my first mental illness diagnosis I looked to her channel for more specific information annnd yeah, it was like a bucket of ice water over the head... She would describe people struggling with things like BPD as manipulative and self-absorbed. She would say things like people with certain disorders were broken, or that they couldn't have healthy relationships. Her video popped up as recommended for me, and I imagine it was this way for others. @sarah jane's right, there were a lot of "I'm a sociopath" comments in the top comments. Some of them eloquently described how it affects them, and some were kids trying to be edgy. Then you grow to learn that the person is, in fact, not some synthetic humanoid and is a human entirely as complex as yourself. That's when the theory falls apart. Sadly, nothing in this was presented in any sort of scientific method whatsoever. And even then, the jump from "sociopathy" to "literally a robot devil thing, probably" is a very concerning one. It shows a fundamental misunderstanding of mental illness and perhaps on Shane's part even a sort of toxic distortion of the truth. Similar depictions of those suffering from Schizophrenia and a broad spectrum of personality disorders are exactly those that mental health professionals have to dispel. It goes without saying that the woman interviewed in this docu-series is obviously no expert; for a mental health expert to describe those suffering from a condition as "heartless" or "robotic" is truly repugnant and borderline malicious. It is shameful.

As a therapist, seeing another therapist talk about sociopaths that way is troubling. Sociopathy, or in more modern terminology Anti-Social Personality Disorder, is a mental illness. Mental illnesses have a myriad of causes and effects. Not everyone with Anti-social personality disorder is a murderous monster and treating them as such discourages them from seeking help. Furthermore, blaming manipulative and damaging behaviours on a mental illness takes responsibility away from the person CHOOSING to commit these crimes. If a sociopath does hurt someone or do something illegal, should they still face consequences for their actions, even though we know about their sociopathy? Of course, because even if they don't have typical emotions, they still have free will and the capacity to reason. This means they can be taught to control their behaviour. So therefore, which of these responses is more motivating for someone? A) "you have this condition and may feel the urge to partake in destructive behaviours, however you can choose not to behave this way, and I will provide you with support to develop healthy behaviours" or B) "you have this condition, which makes you a creepy monster and a menace to society. I judge you as inferior. The only way you can redeem yourself is to stop existing as you currently do. I don't care HOW you do it, just do it."

Shane pisses me off so much, as someone diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder, sociopathy and psychopathy are diagnosis's that haven't been formally used since the 1960s. 4% of the population have ASPD, while 20% of people in prison fit the diagnosis so do 20% of people in the medical profession. Framing people this way is disgusting, I technically fit the old definition of psychopathy, however, with therapy in the 21st century you can learn empathy even if you weren't born with an innate sense of empathy. People need to fuck off, I tend to be socially anxious because I always have to think before I say because innately I have no emotional and empathetic filter but having therapy in my teens helped me learn a second world view that 96% of the population have and I apply the same views of human welfare and secularism to how I interact with other humans. I may not be innately empathetic but I'm consciously aware from working hard and having amazing and non judgemental therapists. I'm 20 and you'd never know I have it because I mask it so well, but nothing makes me feel more antisocial than hearing people talk about and further stigmatise people like me. I'm at uni becoming an actuarial statistician which kind of fits since people like me are so "robotic". Does this mean I no longer know how to manipulate others and take advantage of humans innate wanting to be close to others and me, no, but it means I know that it's unethical to manipulate people to do what I want because I know respect people's autonomy even if deep down inside I have a deep sense of fearless dominance, it's not insidious and more of a defense mechanism because surprise surprise I hate not being in control. But as time goes on I've accepted not having it because it doesn't necessarily mean that if I don't have control that everything will go to shit, it just means that I have less of a probability of knowing what's to happen from lack of controlling events in my life. Which is so much similar to how most humans feel, in the ASPD case we will do anything by all means to ensure our survival if it means hurting others. I'm a nice person and yes have the capacity to love others, I just take a bit of time and "human breaks" and check in with myself to make sure I don't display those antisocial traits that may hurt others. Please stop judging and stigmatising my illness and please use the actual scientific term, not the outdated one used in pop culture. It's no longer diagnosed as sociopathy or psychopathy, it's now diagnosed broadly as antisocial personality disorder because it's so broad in terms of symptoms and traits that people experience. Can people stop stigmatising cluster B personality traits, they are treatable and we're still human. I'm not a monster, I'm human!

To me it felt more like a reality TV exposé, with like 90% of it scripted, because we all know Shane and Jake and all the RU-vid bros with branded personalities are pals from way back. By Shane “accidentally” proving that Jake Paul is a decent human being just like him, then HEY, maybe all insanely rich hacks who make vapid content are pretty nice dudes, too... and therefore they all deserve our sympathy/money. This “documentary” seems more like a PR stunt for Jake to get the public back on his side.

Jake Paul has literally given presentations at conferences about manipulating viewers (in his case, and in most cases those businesses wish to target, children) into wanting/buying.getting their parents to buy a product. He knows full well what he's doing. That alone doesn't qualify him as a sociopath, but it is another cup in the douchebag bucket, especially with his lying about not realizing that's what he's doing.

@kropotkinnie
@kropotkinnie 4 года назад
Yes exactly! I have EDD and my therapists are currently looking into ASPD as a further diagnosis since my past behavior seems to line up (oof). I'm so sick of telling people me not having empathy doesn't mean I don't have sympathy, or emotions, or feel love. I'm pretty sure I feel almost exactly the same as any neurotypical person and my PTSD + OCD do more personality damage than anything else. Yeah, I don't get sad when someone else does just because they're sad, but I have sympathy and usually can figure out why they feel sad and come to the logical conclusion that they have good reason to, and I'll feel bad for them, just not with them. Sure, I sometimes don't know when to censor myself or stop saying something harsh to someone because I don't understand why it would make them feel bad until they tell me, but once they explain their side I'm totally able to sympathise and stop because it's the right thing to do and I hate accidentally hurting my friends and loved ones like that. And yeah, I absolutely did have manipulation problems, I spent a good portion of my life stealing and fighting and getting off on the adrenaline of those things, and I did absolutely have homicidal impulses through my teen years. And then I got therapy, and I stopped all that, and avoid anything that could get me back into those mentalities, because, gasp, I'm just a normal person and would rather *not* do bad things once I know they're bad. Neurotypicals finna shit themselves when they realise non-empaths can feel guilt, too. Maybe not as often, and usually we feel more of a fear of getting caught, but I'm 100% sure I've had moments in my past where I feel a huge amount of guilt for doing something mean to a friend, and had to go and apologise because the guilt was killing me. It might be less common and doesn't always happen, but not having empathy doesn't bar a person from having all the other stuff. So many relationships have been ruined by someone finding out about my disorder(s), telling me it's not possible that I am capable of love, and proceeding to be verbally abusive to me until I have to break up and find comfort in my friends who know that's not true. I've always tried to be loving and kind to everyone I meet because everyone deserves to be shown those things and to be happy, and how ironic it is that the moment people find out I have a *disorder I literally CANNOT help* they deem it totally fine to berate me, call me subhuman, and talk shit about me to my face. Not to mention most EDD and ASPD people can get therapy and recover a lot of emotional and even sometimes empathetic depth. It's not like it is curable but it's definitely something where self-awareness of your faults mixed with good psychotherapy is INCREDIBLY helpful and can usually teach people with these disorders how to use their sympathy as a replacement for empathy. 99% of non-empathetic folks truly don't want to hurt people and DO want to make people happy, do want to see the ones they love smile, etc, just like anyone else. They just don't really have a good grasp on how to make that feel nice for themselves, too, and how to have healthy interactions that bring them joy as well. Therapy helps that and at least in my case I can feel happiness when I see friends smiling, etc, not because of empathetic reactions but because I learned how to see the happiness in knowing a friend is happy. IMO that's just as positive, loving, healthy and candid as having empathy. I hate Dawson's video and that therapist's words. They just continue to fuel the idea that non-empaths are monsters with no self-awareness who aren't just like everyone else. Also, personality disorder solidarity, brother/sister/sibling. ♥️

I've noticed most people who call themselves "empaths" are some of the least empathetic people. They're not bad, not emotionless, not narcissistic. They have anxieties so severe they take other people's emotions and interprete them in ways to fit the "empath's" worldview. They are great at *noticing* someone's verbal and facial cues and *terrible* at figuring out it means.

Personally, as someone who watches his videos (just for the lols), his videos are entertaining in a trailer trash kind of way. Before he made these longform documentaries, he did weird music videos and skits, product reviews (of which he later revealed to be a low point im his career) and subsequently found his place in making conspiracy videos. The last was informed by his personal interest and experiences with the supernatural. In my opinion, his best work was the conspiracy and ghost-hunting videos, because it was what he did best and know most about. Personally, I think it's his kinda trashy personality that makes him stand out; he's not afraid to laugh at himself, and the audience doesn't hesitate to laugh at (not with) him. P.S.: But I think Shane always fancied himself as a bit of a film maker, sans the actual talent and the ability to take criticism. Zachary Quinto, who was the judge on a film making competition Shane participated in, said that Shane did have difficulty accepting criticism. The main reason why Shane is able to be as successful as he is, is because of his audience. His fans are diehard and doesn't hesistate to defend him, which further bolsters his lack of ability to take criticism.

I was diagnosed with an anti-social personality disorder about 8 years ago. While I definitely tick some of the boxes, I was first thought of as being on the autism spectrum. I am just really really awkward in social settings, mostly because I have had therapy from a very young age because I lacked empathy and was very self destructive and I was looked down upon by other children my age and especially their parents. Therapy at that age just made me feel like I was weird and wrong, which caused me to be afraid to have any contact at all with others. I think I'm very aware now of my disorder, but I managed to do something positive with it. I try to show empathy in my own way, and I listen when someone tells me if they don't like something I do. This made my life and the lives of the people close to me way easier. I might still be a bit weird, but I am definitely not a monster. Looking at people being disgusted by the idea of someone being a sociopath just tells me how we're being portrayed and viewed by people who might not have any problems like we do. Shane should not be able to just diagnose someone over the internet and make him look like someone to be scared of. Not very suitable in a time where we learn to accept others even when we don't understand them.

@@wj2429 I wouldn't say so. Sociopathy is generally seen as a lack of conscience--or a lack of a fundamental, deep-seated sense of right and wrong. Something you "feel" and that is rooted in empathy. So a lot of people think that sociopathy is a trait only found in completely irredeemable, cruel people. And, sure, yeah, that trait can be found in terrible people, but not ONLY in terrible people. And this whole thing disregards the concept of sympathy. You don't /need/ to relate to people, to feel on a very fundamental level why hurting people is wrong (that is, to feel their hurt as your own) to know that it's wrong and to not want to hurt people. If you see someone crying, but do not understand why--you can still recognize that they're feeling sad and want to cheer them up. Now, sociopathy isn't actually recognized by the DSM V. It's grouped under antisocial personality disorder. I'm discussing the popular concept of sociopathy vs any actual medical definitions, as I'm not a psychologist. If you know a more nuanced way of describing things though I'd really love to hear it, like, genuinely.

One thing that you forgot to mention is that sociopathy isn't an actual diagnosis either! Usually the term is used to refer to people with ASPD though "sociopath" tends to be thrown around to describe people with NPD, BPD, and autism as well. Most of the discussions around this documentary have been focused around the ableism side, but it's nice to see this argument as well! I honestly hadn't thought about it. It's certainly emblematic of a lot thinking around other subjects too- mass shooters and Trump both get called sociopaths or armchair-diagnosed with something like NPD instead of dealing with larger issues like white supremacy.

He is capitalism working as intended, providing the basically impossible picture for the lower classes to struggle to attain, even though its essentially impossible to reach. Keep your nose to the grind stone, never look up from work, and maybe, just maybe you'll get it. Alissa said it herself, she doesnt even pay for the house, the company does. To most people that *is* the other. That is alien, it needs to be explained. But we've been robbed of the vocabulary to discuss it.

Is always.. Is mostly wrong. I knew someone far too long and as I'm not a psychologist I for sure can never definitely say, but sociopathy was the best explanation for the behavior I experienced and there were many things that checked out. I compared that to anyone I knew as closely and myself and while some things were there most not.

I stopped watching Shane about 5 years ago. I think he's a genuinely sensitive, well-meaning guy, but he clearly loves sensationalism, celebrity drama, and conspiracy theories to a fault. I don't think he *intends* to spread misinformation, but indulging in "what if" scenarios and feeding paranoia is unfortunately his modus operandi.

Okay, I'm only 4 minutes in and I haven't watched the Shane Dawson series because I just generally don't follow Shane Dawson but I already have problems. If this woman really in a therapist (which I am honestly skeptical about) she's not a very good one. If she were, she'd know that sociopathy is not a diagnosis and hasn't been for a while. What she is describing sounds closer to antisocial personality disorder. She'd also know not to describe someone as "evil", "creepy", or "heartless" when speaking in a professional, clinical context.

@@megatronusorionpax4900 she did say sociopaths "don't have a heart", which isn't really professional. I've always thought jake and his brother logan needed to get off of RU-vid. They are a disgrace and a poor role model for the kids that watch them. They both disgust me with their actions. Jake might not be as bad as logan but they both need to go. Also shane is not fake. He genuinely cares about the people he is trying to help. He has done so much to help others out of the kindness of his heart and he gets so much flack for it and that also makes me sick.

@@Dorian_sapiens The word that comes to mind is compassionate? Or thoughtful? There might be a more on-mark word for that concept. But yeah. I find myself agreeing with this sentiment! Another few that seem related are sympathetic / cognitively empathetic. Basically, you might not be able to really "get" how someone else feels but you understand on a logical/rational/cognitive level the context of those feelings and you put that into consideration. The type of empathy most people think of is affective empathy, but just being able to sit in other peoples' emotional states can backfire without some of the cognitive sort cultivated. (Like, if someone is mad around you, you might jump to the conclusion that they're mad at you specifically... rather than something else that they might be dealing with. This can frequently happen in those with BPD and C-PTSD, for example.)
