HEC-RAS uses the version of the Exner (sediment continuity) equation in 1D that Tony Thomas developed for HEC 6 and 6T. In this found footage from his first ever HEC6 class (1976), Tony explains this fundamental equation behind the fundamental approach we use to simulate sediment transport.
For a contemporary conversation with Tony about the early days of sediment transport modeling and the things he learned from more than 50 years modeling rivers, check out his recent episode of the RSM River Mechanics Podcast.
