Yeah I wish they had played that up a bit more. The reaction is so subtle it's hardly there. I think Strickland only had enough time to conjure an "oh shit" in his head before Amos kills him. It's really a scene for the fans because we realize waayy before Strickland does that he's a deadman.

I hadn't understood the love for Amos til this moment. All I had seen was the guy who seemed deeply disturbed and a bit unhinged. This scene turned me to, "Oh damn, this guy IS awesome. Dark, ready to beat the hell out someone as a first measure, but he is ride or die loyal and will fall on the moral sword to protect others."
@NBGEEKS

Amos is loyal to a fault. He knows what he is capable of living with and he knows Prax will regret this even if he is justified. So Amos takes the burden from him and puts in on him, cause, he can live with it.

Those four words "I am that guy" said so much about his character and what he holds sacred, In the last few years I have seen shows that rose above the cheap thrills of explosions and shootings. TE, Breaking Bad and Channel Zero are but a few.

Yeah. He wasn't saving Strickland's life... he was saving Prax' soul. Strickland deserved to die... but not by the hands of a loving father. By the hands of someone who's genuinely been through Hell, and he figures the best thing for him to do with his messed-up life is to keep people like Prax out of Hell, and putting people like Strickland in.

Amos, well most of the characters on TE are a " how to" on building arcs and backstories. Its great that someone finally did it right. Another example is Cas, hes a Martian, a navy vet, conflicting loyalties, a great pilot, he likes old blues, hes brave, hes east Indian with a texas accent because he grew up on a part of Mars where mix of Texans and Indians happened to end up and there is more. What other shows add this many dimensions to their characters?

It's only just over two minutes long, but it's one of the best scenes in modern films or serialized shows. Amos doesn't understand a lot about morality but he knows enough to understand that he doesn't know, and what he does know is if Prax kills this animal it'll haunt him forever and probably have a negative impact on his relationship with his daughter, and given Amos's background of having been born from and then enduring abuse at the hands of men like the good doctor he knows he can spare his friend from the taking of a life by taking it himself and not winding up on the unrighteous side. Amos is such an intriguing character because he is so completely messed up to the point where he's almost a sociopath but it doesn't haunt him in any way. He knows exactly what he is and has no qualms about it because he's in a strange place of acceptance that most people will never be with who they are as a person. It's just so unique because when we're given characters like that in entertainment they're always almost mythical. Amos is very much human. I loe that scene. Amos knows the doctor could not handle killing someone. He wanted to spare him the nightmares for him and for his daughter who would see suffering in her father. Amos took that burden because it had to be done, but by someone who is a killer.
