beyond light was a doubled edge sword. the dcv getting rid of more than half the game and stasis destroying pvp. but stasis was amazing in pve and the new raid was one of the best we got. its hard to say wether beyond light was a good thing for destiny or not.

It’s something that is going to have to be looked back on in another expansion or so for it to be given a ‘definitive’ position of it being a good or bad expansion. Though pour one out of my Mars strikes, I loved those a lot even if it was a short expansion and the bosses. Also strike specific loot, I still loved those and DESPERATELY want back.

I mean I even knew who Cayde was and still though his death was a big fat meh. The first words out of my mouth were "O no the funny man died." More a criticism of how barren the personality of destiny characters are then anything. Cayde had one. Being the funny guy. Not much of one but he had one. I am not surprised new players don't really care about the characters much. They don't really try. Zavala is a brick wall and he is the norm for characters.
@LividCreature

@@DeadlyGrub I think unless you played D1 and the D2 main campaign (which getting rid of that made no sense to me at all it was the perfect introduction to the world and characters) you’ll have zero attachment to the vanguard and most of the other characters in the game. Now it’s just: drop you in the world, do some basic fetch and pewpew quests, then off you go in to a giant world filled with lore and characters and plots and subplots. I never played d1 but I started D2 day one, and the campaign made me care about the world and the history and why things meant something and importance. It made me watch the d1 stories on RU-vid and better understand how things worked and why. It made me want to watch Byf and Evan and other great destiny content creators to fill me in on the gaps of knowledge of every aspect of the game. Now, new players, I couldn’t imagine the vast majority of them giving two shits about the story and the world. All these seasons and subplots and characters we knew from the past are just npcs to them and just a plot device to get leveled and geared. I stopped playing a few months ago because I just don’t care about the world anymore. The story is segmented and the introduction to the darkness and it ominous threats just went away for a whole year after the BL campaign and some post-campaign content. I’m a solo player mostly I rarely ever did raids and pvp and I feel like the game is just catering more and more to the hardcore base of players who cherish loot and endgame and pvp activities more than the world. I’m actually sad about it…

The main downside to sunsetting was sunsetting everyones armor especially if you have triple 100 stats like I did that is not easy to obtain and was way more painful for me to trash my armor than to clear basically all weapons I had out of the vault because they got sunset

Its pretty obvious beyond light was majorly changed thoughout production. I mean, just look at how much it has. The exo stranger coming back, darkness arriving, dark vanguard, clovis bray, the deep stone crypt, all fallen houses in one with darkness, NEW DARKNESS SUBCLASS and more! It should have been bigger than taken king and forsaken on paper. But eris and drifter are barely involved, because they coudnt even record their voice acting, the fucking fish ghost, volantis and clarity control... it was simply cut and its pretty clear. Sunsetting and DCV had a major impact on it, but covid was what fucked BL up.

I really hope once this all ends (And once Lightfall is released), they'll re-release Beyond Light and have it at its maximum potential. Sure, it's Wishful thinking, but it could happen. Also, a good way to have the DCV be better going forward is to have older content be in free DLC's, maybe accessed through Amanda - like the first trilogy - or the basic Steam DLC system.

For me personally, I was “ok” with the DCV but it’s executed was terribly. Little to no new weapons at launch in BL where they had to literally bring back weapons from year 3 just to have something. Do the locations, I was “ok” (like who want to go to Mercury?) but my issue is that they did an 180 with PvP like how did we loose the Tangled Shores map, or some of the “less popular “ Nessus maps or even the Trials of the Nine maps ? If I can access the location in pve (I.e. Tangled Shore) then in PvP I should STILL be able to play it. In short, I’m again “OK” with the DCV but the way they did it is very confusing and it kind of shifted my perspective and gave me a reality check and kind of scares me and perhaps even a new player trying to get in .

This would be great. Even if they relegated it to a non-live service model that just existed as the campaigns, activities etc but no randoms or matchmaking, so you can run it all on your main machine but have the option to "host" a fireteam for friends only to run that stuff with. Sorta like Borderlands. They wont do it though since it would suck players from the current day version and they would lose potential EV sales.
@Draco25240
@Draco25240 2 года назад
Very much agreed, I've been saying the same since BL launched. Pull up the repository version of the final version of Arrivals, add Undying, Dawn and Worthy content back in (plus some cut content like Mara's appearances in Dreaming City), progression data if they still have backups of that, as well as the anticheat, and launch it as "Destiny 2: Legacy". No further effort required other than basic server upkeep like D1 gets. I know it would be much more complicated to do than "just do this and that", but that would be my dream scenario, and at this point I'd honestly pay full price for it if I had to. Heck, I've even got a backup of the whole Arrivals game install on the tiny off-chance that some modder some day manages to figure out how to run it on a private server.
@fissilepear7805
@fissilepear7805 2 года назад
Or they could try to do what MCC does and create install packages for certain parts of the game. That way, players could have all the content in the same game but choose what they want installed or not. Ex: let’s say you’ve played forsaken’s story too many times to count and want to go back and play red war, simply go to the install section and uninstall forsaken and start the download on red war

The issue with sunsetting weapons in Destiny has everything to do with how Bungie implements their "loot" system. If we compare Destiny to other "loot" based games Destiny is far too "stingy" with their loot (this has been an issue since day one of Destiny). Getting one weapon per raid/dungeon encounter (and most activities) is severely underwhelming compared to the aforementioned games where loot is more or less overwhelming. Sunsetting would work if Bungie cranked the drop rate knob up to 11 for literally every activity. Think about it, how many times do people run GM nightfalls when it's double loot drop? I'd venture to guess that they get the most traffic on those weeks than weeks when they don't have double drops (the caveat being which GM it is as well). With depressingly low drop rates, the notion of sunsetting brought the value of a player's time to the forefront - "Why keep playing a game if my time isn't respected". To this day, the loot system is still debilitating, hopefully, the crafting system with Witch Queen will mitigate some of these feelings, but the truth is spending more time with one singular weapon does not solve the issue of loot scarcity in Destiny 2.

my problem with Beyond light is that i have trouble calling it an “expansion” when they sunset half of the weapons, and got rid of 4 worlds to replace one. I’m not as mad about the stasis, but Destiny has been an MMORPG, and i have a problem with getting rid of almost of the exploration kinda takes away from the whole experience.

Right? imagine if like FFXIV decided to 'vault' AAR in its entirety, Coil's of Bahamut.. thats an end game raid that is STILL considered the hardest content to do. They'd find themselves losing a lot of the dedicated playerbase, or atleast concurrent playerbase. Destiny players have always confused me, an I'm in that list. Why is it we allowed Bungie to remove *PAID* content? Whats worse, if you go through the files? they haven't vaulted anything, its just not available, its still in the game files.. so this excuse of 'ballooning size' is somewhat.. bunk?

I think Beyond Light would have been better if they had just removed those locations but never sunset weapons imo. I dont agree with the sunset of 21%, Recluse and Mountain. They are super weapons and were damn hard to get. Every game needs weapons and items like this to spur players on and keep them playing. For example in Fallout 76, you want to get an explosive minigun because it's OP as fuck and every player has the ability to get one shoudl they just put the time into the grind.
@turse8201
@turse8201 2 года назад
@@WaveForceful I disagree, sunsetting shouldn't have gotten rid of the amount of stuff that it did but the main things that they needed to sunset was some of the pinnacle weapons, especially recluse which was very easy to get. The PVE meta suffered because of recluse - mountaintop and it needed to be sunset. Some I wish stayed like breakneck but if the PVE meta was better off with the weapons getting sunset then so be it. When a single loadout becomes the only loadout for every PVE activity, any new weapons that are added will not be used Though sunsetting in general was poorly done as they didn't have enough new weapons to replace the ones we lost i still think losing the pinnacle weapons was better for the game

the thing about the vault thats the most dumb is you can still access almost all the "vaulted" content most of those locations are still in the game files the assets for them are still there taking up space, people who say "its the systems that cause the issues" well thats not accurate its a part but most of those systems are still in the game aswell used in different areas that ARE in use. as for the narative it suffers from "setup-itis" that a lot of movies have trying to set up the next part that doesnt end things or fill in plot hoiles its just more setup for the next thing and so on, never giving closure and given leaks about how assinine some of the bungi vetrians are being shown to be going on about a "vision" but never giving direction it makes snece the story always ends up feeling empty. I hope chnages are made at the top end of bungie as they seem to be crushing the game for the sake of "user retention" using metrics and not actualy careing about why the players would wnat to play the game, it so sadening as desting has the best gunplay I have ever had the pleasure of playing with and the abilities and potential for story that other games dont come close to but they squader it badly.

So I was someone who started playing Destiny 2 at a friend's recommendation back before Beyond Light launched. I dove in head-first, loving the gameplay and having a lot of fun with even the mediocre first campaign. I was hyped for Beyond Light and everything they teased beyond that, in no small part because of the same excited energy my friend brought with his own reaction. I didn't like that i had to get a lot of story context from outside the game, but i was willing to accept it... for a bit. Where i ended up falling out was with sunsetting. I hadn't REALLY been very deep into any of the big MMOs before (aside from Guild Wars 2 that has a wholly horizontal progression system) so sunsetting seriously bothered me, especially since i was SUPER proud of the Goldtusk I'd farmed from the Menagerie and when i learned i wouldn't be able to use it anymore and (at the time) there was no alternative in sight. Regardless, I played for a little while longer after Beyond Light launched. I played for maybe 1-2 months but i just kept feeling bothered. I was really upset (maybe irrationally so) about my lost weapons that i only had a few months with and that fact, combined with a couple things going on in my personal life, caused me to drop the game. As I've watched the extra information coming out around the game and trying my best to keep up with content creators, i've just felt really unmotivated to return. I know there's Quickfang now and other stuff that's replaced old Sunsetted gear, but i don't think i'm built for the typical gear treadmill, constantly raising your power to be able to even try to play the new activities, seasonal or otherwise. It felt less like fun and more like an obligation and that saddened me because i REALLY enjoyed the gameplay for a while. Maybe it's the gearing, maybe it's the power level farming, maybe it's just because i wasn't really that good at the game. At any rate, i really enjoyed and appreciated this video recapping everything. It was really well made and thought out and I really don't think i disagreed with anything you said Ironically enough. Anyways, thanks for always making the content that you do. Looking forward to the next vid!

Honestly I adore Destiny once I finally managed to break through the New Light experience. After I understood what everything meant gameplay wise I've been playing so much more and almost have 400 hours by this point with only less than a year of playing and I adore it so much more with Witch Queen. I almost outright quit during Beyond Light though and I despised Stasis with every fiber of my being and that feeling of being punished for not playing the game since launch really sucks, It really feels like I missed so much stuff and now will never get the chance to play that old cool content as of now and If I want to know anything about the lore I have to watch 3 hour long YT videos to understand what is going on but beyond the irritation of missing out my only gripe these days is how expensive everything in the shop is. 2 $40 dlc and a $30 anniversary pack on top of $5-$15 items in the shop feels like a bit much but oh well I suppose, that's the price for being F2P

You know what, after some time I partially forgave Bungie for Beyond Light. Corona was happening, communication and synchronization issues were evident. However, I think that migration to the new engine was also a huge part of the lackluster Beyond Light. Now, we can only hope that The Witch Queen will be a semi-decent expansion. I don't mind there being not huge amount of content, as long as that content is replayable and fun.

I’m not sure about sunsetting being the most damaging thing to Destiny 2’s reputation. Remember at launch when the community found out Bungie was purposely throttling EXP gains so that it forced you to buy the XP Boosters from the Eververse? (That’s some Ubisoft shit from Bungie right there). Or when the community found out you had to buy re-buy Destiny 1 weapons and armour that were being brought into Destiny 2 (e.g. You had to own Forsaken and Season Of The Drifter and The Joker’s Wild to get hold of The Last Word and Thorn, weapons we already brought / used / owned in Destiny 1).

In all honesty Beyond Light was a huge step backwards and the game still hasn't and probably wont ever recover. For an 'expansion' that had a AAA price they removed more than half of the games content, it was in essence a huge 'contraction'. Obviously stasis was massively over tuned and ruined PvP for almost a year. Worst of all though, the new light player experience was completely destroyed. Everything i did when i started the game was based around all of the old planets that have been taken out of the game. The exotic quests for all Warmind and Forsaken weapons, and also all 3 old campaigns that were pre-Forsaken are lost. D2 is in this super weird position now where if you experienced all this stuff and are a veteran player then the game sort of makes sense in terms of its direction and where we came from. But man alive, there is no way i could recommend this game to a new player anymore, it is an absolute confused husk of what it once was. Imagine starting the game now and thinking the Cabal had very little to do with anything (excluding season of the Chosen) and that Shaw Han was your main NPC. Also, the fact that Bungie are somewhat given a pass for Beyond Light because they were re-coding everything is nonsense. I honestly couldn't care less if these coding tweaks (which have made gameplay objectively worse since in terms of connection and lag) made things 'easier' for Bungie moving forward. my enjoyment of a games content is not based on how 'easy' it is for the Devs to provide it. Its based on the quality of their product. Im not paying AAA prices for expansions in order to make things 'easier' for the Devs. Over the last year they have definitely improved things loot and content wise. But its a long road back from what they did in Beyond Light. New players struggle to get into to play D2 anymore, and old players cant recommend it anymore. That is definitely not what Bungie was looking for

In regards to Eramis, I gotta be honest and I say I disagree on wanting to kill her off. I see the story of this expansion as not being a one off like the Rise of Iron story, but instead being a story that masquerades as a one off that will be folded into a climax later with other storylines, Avenger's style. This story is all about setup for a future expansion, that tries to still be a story on its own (which sadly does result in the narrative being weakened, most likely due to time constraints with trying to balance this). Eramis is introduced as a faction leader siding with darkness and is developed somewhat but not a ton, because I believe the rest of her story and development will come later when she is thawed out and (supposedly/theoretically) allies with other darkness factions, thus putting her in the environment and setting for her next arc/development. In effect, this makes Beyond Light not her main story, but rather her extended introduction/origin. Does this kinda suck in some ways since it means she feels underdeveloped in this expansion? Absolutely, and I think it's a shame that she didn't have more to do. However, I'd rather her survive to be further developed and used later, than killed off. Keeping her alive means we can have a character show up as a future antagonist that has already been introduced in the past, instead of being a villain of the week that was introduced and killed in the expansion/season they were introduced in. I think that will help because Destiny lacks a lot of villains with in game history like that, and we need more to help give the narrative more weight and make us more invested in the villains we're facing (we're only just now starting to get villains like that with Savathun and the game could certainly use more).

I understand that this is lost money at first for them as there is no guarantee that the consumer buys anything at all, however, it does raise the odds that someone actually understands what is happening and why this is an amazing game to play. The saving new lights thing was just revealing a hole that already existed there. A log of all of the cutscenes from launch to now would be pretty intense but also very easy to implement as well as all you have to do is make a button that plays the cutscene in the timeline. This, plus an actual first quest, plus probably a better intro to and from the timeline should help new lights a lot

I love the video, but Eramis being frozen is actually good. Hear me out. Many times in WoW they have done this. Leaving enemies unconscious or “defeated” so they return in the future bigger and badder. So instead of focusing on what they did, think about what they could do. That’s the way u gotta look at it or ur gonna depress urself

One issue I had with Beyond Light is that through out the whole expansion they keep telling us and warning us that stasis and using the darkness is dangerous and can corrupt people, and yet we never see that happen, I wish there was a story beat that actually showed this like say in a cutscenes we see our guardian become more brutal like ripping the arm off a dreg or slowly torturing an enemy before we kill it only to realize how brutal we have become or something and learn to control it later on.

Loved beyond light. I love the story and that was one of the best year for destiny as long as story in game is considered.

@@raffertykeane-eastwood2046 yah. I get people not liking story, it's absolutely upto the person, for me things happening in game was so much more enjoyable. Also, when I say beyond light I am talking about overall story for the year 4 including all the seasons that came after Beyond Light. chosen, splicer and now lost have been amazing imo. I agree that Campaign story was only above average, and my main complaint is that Eramis is great and intriguing character but they just left that story beat without picking it up again, tbh I am glad Eramis is alive because she's great and I hope they pick her story up again. And most of the amazing story that came with beyond light was from lore books and sadly so many people won't get to experience those amazing story beats because most people don't read lore books, Dark Future, Ship Stealer and Clovis journal are some of the best lore writing in the game.

I started playing at a weird time, last year, I bought the DLCs at the same time. Took about a month to get everything sorted out. As a new player and very little guidance from the game it became overwhelming. Then the splicer came out I stopped paying attention to any story line. 500 hours in and I still have no idea whats going on in the dreaming city I feel like I missed something big.

Shadowkeep was when I started playing and back then I didn’t feel like I needed to buy the expansions because there was already a lot of free content I could explore. I did eventually buy forsaken and shadowkeep but that was 2 or 3 months after I started playing. When I started over on a new account in beyond light I felt I needed to buy beyond light or I couldn’t be able to be as good as other players or experience the same things because I couldn’t do as many things, and with people running around with stasis killing you with shatterdive or with the stasis supers. I did eventually buy it and all the other expansions for my new account but I feel cheated out of basic things I could do for free.

I think my biggest issue with Beyond Light is that, outside of the original BL campaign, everything else (namely the seasonal stories) built toward Witch Queen rather than supplement Beyond Light. Sure we have the whole Darkness aspect in BL, but the campaign focused more on Eramis and less on the Darkness as an actual entity rather than a source of power. Season of the Hunt? Bringing Uldren Sov back into the fold as Crow and planting Osiris, as we now know (well, it was figured out long ago but actually confirmed this season) is Savanthun's literal eyes and ears in the City. Season of the Chosen? Bringing Cabal on board as an ally against the Darkness. Season of the Splicer? Bringing Fallen on board as an ally against the Darkness. Season of the Lost? Bringing Mara Sov back into the game after losing her in Taken King, setting up the big Savanthun = Osiris reveal, and Crow's personal struggles which in turn has made Mara do some REALLY, and I mean *REALLY* questionable things.

"Another golden era", I am kind on the fence on this statement. Every year now, since d1, they have said "The best is yet to come", yet there have always been massive problems. It is easy to keep saying the best is yet to come, or another golden era, for years on end.

I’m new. And I gotta say, I don’t think Beyond Light deserved a third of the hate I’ve seen. Beyond Light seems amazing. I don’t think people would give it so much hate if the stuff wasn’t vaulted alongside it. There is NO question to me, Beyond Light is definitely the first DLC I’m going to get.

Without all the seasonal content that was just removed BL is honestly not a good expansion and not worth buying aside from stasis. The story campaign is only 4 hours long and there is a huge lack of content, just nothing to do on Europa at all besides grinding stasis upgrades.

I kinda hope now that Sony bought bungie we might be able so get some content back, that would be nice, just to have a lot of variety of activities you can do and planets.

My best friend recently passed. We have hundreds, if not thousands, of hours playing together in Destiny 2 alone. I will forever have 499 slots in my bank unless they (expand it) because I refuse to give up a replica of his favorite gun that he always had equipped. Sunset or not, I’ll always have a piece of my friend with me.

Beyond Light also did not come with a dungeon or a public-space planetary activity like Forsaken and Shadowkeep did. Hopefully Which Queen surprises me, but I doubt it and I will have to criticize that expansion too.
