The Experimental Aesthetics of f(x): Pink Tape & 4 Walls Art Direction 

Min heejin ran the sm design team like the military lmaooo the impact and influence she had in the kpop industry is just... wow

all of f(x)'s comeback concepts were incredibly artistic and were always straying away from the norms of mainstream kpop. But it was pink tape and 4 walls that so boldly pushed through unexplored territory for the kpop industry. Thank you for making a video about this! They (both f(x), and the creative minds behind the music and physical album production) truly deserve the recognition for their lasting contribution to kpop.

Amazing video! As a graphic designer as well, f(x) holds a special place in my heart not only for their music but also because Min Hee Jin cleverly and seamlessly integrated high art concepts into kpop with f(x). Finding her references like easter eggs always made me so giddy. Not mentioned in your video but other examples were the Pulp Fiction and A Clockwork Orange influences in Red Light's art direction. Also the photo of f(x) wearing berets, stripes and check printed tops, with blue, red, yellow, and white pants, basically a Piet Mondrian painting personified. Everything she did with f(x) was brilliant but the 4 Walls music and art direction as a whole was just perfection. Never would I have imagined that f(x) would release a UK Garage song, perform it in bell bottoms, with voguing choreography, while having Swiss and Modernist inspired graphic aesthetics. Who would've thought all these different elements(none of which were used in kpop yet) from different time periods could coexist together. It still blows my mind today. Even with f(x) at the bottom of the priority list, Min Hee Jin did so much with the very little SM gave f(x). f(x) and Min Hee Jin were a match made in art ho heaven. I'm glad Krystal remained close friends with Min Hee Jin, hopefully they'll all work together again someday.

Pink Tape is a work of art, physically, aesthetically and musically, although honestly, the same can be said for any of their albums. Thank you for this amazing video. There will never be quite a group like f(x)... they deserve recognition for pushing boundaries and truly being ahead of their time.

I love f(x) and I love to see them being recognized as a trendsetter group. The way they manage to create a sense of mystery and magic in their work is trully inspiring.

I said this once and i'm gonna say it again, f(x) and min hee jin are AHEAD OF THEIR TIME. seriously when I heard 4th gen songs, I was thinking "if f(x) just debut now they will be bop" I know how underappreciate f(x) is that time

So that's why Pink Tape is so iconic. Definitely set the bar for album packaging. Min Heejin is fearless to be unconventional and it paid even years after.

3:57 to be honest, I feel like unique packaging was always a thing with kpop prior to this iconic masterpiece but this indeed did help creative directors give more thought and put more creativity into their packaging designs, etc. Min Hee Jin really is the blueprint and has been since she started working for the industry since 2002.

I will never forgive SM for what they done to FX.

I love what min heejin did with the groups she worked with in SM every single of them especially red velvet and fx but f(x) gosh they were waaaay ahead of their time

SM really went downhill creative-wise after Min Hee Jin’s departure, from the song choices and all of Aespa’s plagiarism scandals. No one can really top her work especially on girl groups so I’m looking forward to her new girl group this time.

Im really happy because min hee jin work with F(x) back then and they are my first stan and now she's working for Newjeans which is pretty cool too see her work with the albums 😭😭 and her creative mind she's really smart and talented 😭😭 i hope she make work album like this because its soo cool and beautiful 😭😭
