The Exploration of Structural Remains Near Alva's Silver Glen

An examination of what is left of a row of buildings, probably dating to the early 18th century, that may have been used by miners working in Alva's Silver Glen. As these structural remains do not appear on any Ordnance Survey map, they must have been more or less totally gone, and at ground level, by the mid-19th century. In this video I try to provide as much information as I can in the hope that a team of archaeologists carry out a dig to establish if this was living quarters, what date it was occupied, and if it was indeed related to the mining of silver in Silver Glen. The mining of silver here was carried out in two phases, one in the early 18th century and one in the mid-18th century. During the first phase of mining huge malleable lumps of silver were extracted, and a lot of this was used to fund the 1715 Jacobite rising, as led by the Earl of Mar. After carrying out measurements of the structural remains I follow The Hillfoots Diamond Jubilee Way for a bit towards Tillicoultry.

Hi Eddy, really interesting and enjoyable video. You are so right about the ever changing views, and that one over Stirling is truly magnificent. I recall a friend that lived on the banks of Loch Venachar in the Trossachs, and commented on how every day, the colours of the landscape and surroundings would change, but never the exquisite beauty. It is a great idea to have the plots dug up as there must surely be some evidence of what it was used for. The song at the end is a lovely production, you are one talented musician. Thanks Eddy, stay safe and take care, regards Rob.

Hello Eddy, This has got to be one of your best yet. The spectacular views, very interesting history, you done well spotting these ruins, they were just a few boulders to others but you saw more. And when google earth showed an aerial photo, it was clear there were buildings there. We love listening to your banter while you sat on the boulder, it made us smile. We hope this will catch the imagination of the archaeologists and a dig goes ahead but even if it didn't it will always be remembered as a very interesting find by you. Well done Eddy, keep making these fantastic vlogs, they are so interesting. Ian and Angie.

Great video Ed, i have lived in Alva all my life and walked up that track up to the hills and never noticed that before. There is a farm at the bottom of the track. Good theory about their former use.

Great intro and video. Always fascinating stumbling upon these old & ancient structures or ruins, often in the most unlikely of places. Like you, I can spend hours among them, trying to bring life (in my own mind anyway) the mystery & imagine what they were, why there, who used them & what life was like for the people at that very place, so long ago. Many thanks for this one & I hope you can 'get to the bottom' of the mystery. Cheers & good hunting.

Brilliant work Ed. Love the history of this area. I often wonder if there are any pieces of silverware still around that were produced from Alva silver. Keep the videos coming.

@@EdExploresScotland Two communion cups in the local church, and a punch ladle owned by the Royal Company of Archers are known to be of Alva silver. Other items were made but cannot be identified now.

Those ruins older than the silver mines? There are two enclosures above them. Also on the Nebit possible round houses. Its an ancient landscape. No doubt the tribes here watched or were harassed by the Roman's and took refuge on the Ochils. Dollar fort probably burned.. Thanks for the post. I pass by that area quite a bit, you get a really good view of the valley and river from that site without having to go any further up. Post Roman to early Medieval times the hills must of been a great vantage point. In the 800s im sure sentries would of seen long ships coming in. Makes sense.

Very interesting Ed your right it needs a dig there see whats what. I think common sense left the building years ago mate and may be its us that are living in the parallel universe you know were the complexitys of a pelican crossing butons are common senses really.😁

Hi Ed, great video. I’m local to the area. I’d be really interested in talking to you about the silver glen and you’re progress on the call for a dig around these sites. You’re time is much appreciated.

Many thanks for your comment. For me, it was just one of those obvious things that no one seemed to have either spotted or mentioned. I'm not a guy that can, at present, create or find funds for any dig, and I simply give a voice to a location that has been somehow ignored.

@@EdExploresScotland it was great to get your insight into it. Unfortunately I’m the same, although I was sure that your calls to action would’ve been heard and acted upon by someone who could get this into action, so that’s a shame. The history of the silver glen has been captivating me for so long. I visit regularly with my friend and we both have a longing to see more research done for the area.

Great Ed would you use a drone to video parts to get birdseye view
@EdExploresScotland
@EdExploresScotland 3 года назад
Many thanks. Drone footage is something that's always been at the back of my mind. That said, Google's Earth or satellite view gives really good views from above, although in a very different way to how a drone may view it. The recent ability to make moving images from Google's Earth Studio has meant I can create really good 'fly-bys', and in many ways, for me, this has sort of taken the place of any potential drone use. There are of course locations and situations where drone use is either prohibited or would be potentially dangerous, but it has been something that I occasionally chew over. If you check the Google Earth Studio footage that I placed near the start of my recent Queensferry to Cramond video you'll see just how effective it can be.
