As a PC gamer, Splatoon represents the peak antithesis for the multiplayer shooter genre, in the best way possible. Has high mechanical depth and skill ceiling, yet managed to have skill floor low enough to let casual grow into a skilled player.
@@Legend-of-Kai only thing remotely close to one is the new catalogue, but even the stuff in that gets put into rotation of the shops and capsule system after each "season" so you're not missing out on the new stuff that comes around which is a massive plus to curbing FOMO.
@@Legend-of-Kai It's crazy how Splatoon 3 has so many things that Nintendo could make a profit off of (the catalogue is essentially a battle pass) yet they choose not to.
Splatoon was one of my favorite games of my childhood. I got it 2015 at the age of 8 only a couple months after it came out. I’ll never forget replaying through the story multiple times and leveling up in multiplayer player. So many of my friends would talk about splat fests at lunch. Good times.
I mean technically it already has reached one of the high pillars of Nintendo. If you don't know, and if I remember correctly, Nintendo released this promotion thing for the Nintendo NY store that showed four characters walking together below the Nintendo logo: Mario, Link, Isabelle, and Inkling Girl. These are Nintendo EPD characters, so not made by other companies, and these are, said by Nintendo, considered to be Nintendo's *Big 4* . In other words, Nintendo really gives a damn about these franchises and want to give them as much love as possible.
Its incredible how its managed to grow at this rate. When you think back about major Nintendo IPs splatoon could easily be considerd the latest or at least one of the latest and yet its already being included with Mario and Link and such.
Neat, I'm seeing this in my recommended after doing a presentation on Splatoon today for my game design class! Hyped to watch this! It's so dang inspiring that this one crazy idea managed to soar so high, even with the Wii U weighing it down. Splatoon's why I got into digital art at all, it's given me so much joy!
It should be noted that splatoon selling so well in Japan is by all accounts an oddity. Shooters in Japan are pretty niche compared to the Americas so for a franchise like this to be one of the fastest sellers says a lot about it.
It probably had to do with the more cute and friendly aesthetics appealing to a Japanese audience more than most shooters honestly, it just seems so much more welcoming to an audience put off my military shooters and dark and depressing aesthetics (which includes kids as they'd be more attracted to the cartoony look too)
Gameplay of Splatoon is refreshing while other shooters are so repetitive, also the art-style of Splatoon is much better than the other shooters who all look the same. and finally the community is much better compared to the toxic people who play COD
Splat 3 is the first real sequel in my opinion. Not to say that 2 isn’t a sequel, just that 3 is the first to truly refine and nail what Splatoon as a series is supposed to be. Great design for specials, insane customization and quality of life features, and generally more polished world and characters. It’s the best title so far, whether you call it 2.5 or not. (Though that camp can enjoy their opinion by themselves)
that's usual the hypocrites, who ignore the fact that EA and Activision are basically releasing the same game ever, but criticize Nintendo for having 3 games in like 10 years
@@budderguy2128 I love splatoon 3 but its map design is very downgraded. Also Shift Stations being removed was so heartbraking. If splatoon 2 was remade like splatoon 3 with balanced specials, keeping the original and great map design from splatoon 2, and adding the new splatoon 3 modes like Big Run and Tricolor, it woiod be way better.
@@mricci07 map design used to be quite a bit better, there are some screenshots from the old trailers that show how scorch gorge and eeltail alley used to look, and man what we got in the end is such a downgrade. As for shifty stations, I’d prefer if tricolor stages had their own special maps, not just regular multiplayer stages with minimal changes. Imagine if tricolor was a 3v3v3 mode that is open the whole duration, and a special 2v4v2 would open up as a retaliation mode. That would be so awesome, especially if we made the tricolor stage it’s own unique thing every splatfest like shifty stations. Imagine inkrails that drop you into mid or the enemy base? Or gushers that can block the way to the tricolor signal but trap you in mid? So many interesting layouts that hopefully we could see, maybe when side order is finally done with. Then the whole dev team will be focused on the updates.
something that i would like to point out is that when the original splatoon came out, things like cod and battlefield were dominating the shooter genre, so when i first saw splatoon it was such a breath of fresh air. i got splatoon back in 2016 and havent stopped playing since, also the motion controls are genius despite the stereotype that theyre terrible
The nostalgic effects of Splatoon are beginning to take root even with the release of Splatoon 3. Think about how many have played the game as youth and grew up with the series, even now. What also gets to you, under its all-ages paintball image, is the lore and world building that has proven very solid. Third time has already proven a charm and it’s amazing to see how it’s made a mark in popular culture… even with the epicentre in Japan. It was quite a shock to see February 2021 become the launchpad for Splatoon 3… and it’s made huge strides ever since.
i may not have had a Wii U, but I remember vividly seeing those original splatoon commericals at a young age, super nostalgic! now i play splatoon 3 daily
Splatoon and Xenoblade are amazing new successful IPs from Nintendo created in the 2010s. I'm glad you covered just how explosive Splatoon's rise has been.
I think the game offers a lot to all kinds of players and situations. When i first bought it, my wii/wiiu was stored in the large upstairs room above the garage. The wifi router was downstairs on the other side of the house. I had no wifi. I could not play the mode the game was selling you on the box. But it didn’t matter. I loved hero mode, and i still do. It’s really replayable. I just mastered my skills over and over, got all the scrolls. Did basically everything. They made the hero mode good enough to fill the game on it’s own, at least for me.
I remember playing Splatoon on the Wii U the memories I had well let's just say those Japanese Snipers goah every time they got me! Sometimes u had good teammates and sometimes terrible ones. I remember one time I got so good of teammates we spawn killed the other team! Seriously whoever they were all of u carried our team.
This franchise is basically the opposite to F-Zero. F-Zero started strong, but quickly declined, whereas Splatoon started off well on a failing console, then *EXPLODED* in the following years.
2015 was the first time I got access to the internet I will never forget it,learning about Pokémon and the first splatoon trailer, the concerts and final fest trailer always make me cry.this series will always be special to me
Splatoon is a niche game in a genre filled with normie shooters. ARMS is a niche game in a niche genre. Both seek uniqueness, but ARMS fail because its target audience is so small to begin with; unlike Splatoon.
Splatoon was the reason why I bought a WiiU, that was so great of them to release a WiiU with Splatoon already installed on it for Black Friday in 2015, also had Smash but I wanted it for Splatoon. I was outside of Fred Meyer at 3am Black Friday morning, waiting to get in & purchase it & I still have it to this day, just wish the Splatoon 1 servers weren't down, sometimes I like going back to the original game but they've been down for over a month due to a hacking problem. So happy that this series took off the way that it did, I enjoy it a lot & I don't want to see it die off anytime soon, I hope to see great things come out in later seasons for the third game like maybe improvements to existing maps & whatever new maps we get to not be as bad as well as the return of seekers but that's never going to happen, I'm the only person who likes seekers. Maybe if the US saw more of the Splatoon stuff Japan gets, things would be even better but eh, at least we get some merch so I won't complain too much. I still have this shirt I bought from Hot Topic during the run of the first game that just has a bunch of inkling squids on it, it's simple & fun.
Honestly upset we never got that ice-cream tho...looked good. But at the rate its going, I'm sure we'll see more Splatoon stuff worldwide! Can't say much for the US but maybe we can get some love in AU
Honestly the thing that really keeps me in this series is just how unique Splatoon is… no other shooter besides TF2 comes close to the world building, gameplay, etc that Splatoon has. Seriously, what other game makes you go “oh god funny squids can maybe happen in real life?” Lore is bonkers as well, gonna plug Rassicas if you want to know more about it. Minor critique about the video, I felt like a large portion of it was just reading what was essentially a Wikipedia article rather that explaining the video topic… maybe next time go more in-depth, look into the community and really find out what and why makes it good, give specific examples, etc. Otherwise good vid, congrats on the algorithm favoring you :D
Hey! Thanks for the informative comment. I see what you mean, you reckon I should pull up quotes from the community and things and by specific examples what do you reckon. Still new to this video making so any help on how to make the viewer experience better is greatly appreciated. I think for these types of videos a lot of it is just recounting it's history but I also tried to pull up opinions from forum boards or take snippets from interviews. Not much actually came from Wikipedia apart from the dates of releases but I guess it came across that way. Maybe I have to present it differently? But most seem to enjoy this format so I'm not sure ugh. Guess this is part of trying to improve haha. But thanks again! Love getting comments like this and any further suggestions I'll definitely take on board
I sure am lucky to have experienced the first Splatoon game on my WiiU and knowing that it was gonna be the new big thing. Looking back at around that time, I wish I didn't judge it by its sale units and focused more on having fun but I guess I didn't have the luxury of playing online. I still miss those days.
@@eon0879 Pssh those things aren't common knowledge you'd know just from playing. Heck I don't know much about any of the games I play especially when it comes to those things.
I 🐬 love salmon run 😤. I play it morning, noon, and night 😩. Okay, I’m playing The Last of Us Part I remake atm. But still, I love salmon run more than I love my own children.
As a older person I absolutely love splatoon..My daughter bought me a switch when I got cancer and the game...I quickly got addicted to splatoon 2..lol..there isn't a day that goes by I don't play splatoon 2 or 3..Nintendo is my favorite company ..
The tofu thing was never intended as the final product It's just what the vast majority of game studios use when designing the gameplay before they have the visual design down. It's why Resident Evil 2 had a secret Tofu mode as a joke.
Oh thats neat, I think the concept they used on it was though maybe not the characters themselves but the whole spraying ink and turf war format. But pretty cool regardless. Thanks for sharing
I love how the gameplay was ready to go long before any character in the final product. What was that tweet about? graphics being the first thing finished in a video game?
I never had a Wii u and got my switch around like 2020 so I never got really involved with Splatoon, but when I saw that teaser for Splatoon 3 on new years I instantly became a fan and was ready for Splatoon 3 to come out
For me personally diversity is a game changer when it comes to videogames and seeing the inking with what looked like locs twirling around an inkbrush I immediately became entranced with the Splatoon Series
My mom got me it for Christmas last year and thought I liked the game (I've never played it 😭😭) but I played it of course and now I'm so in love. I already almost have 300 hours on it Edit: I always saw it but never got into Splatoon. But now I watch everything about it! That includes past games even. It makes me want to play Splatoon 2 just for the story
i remember when i was 6 in 2015 and got a wii u bundeld with mario kart 8 and splatoon form crismas and i had no idea what splatoon was oh and i was than to lazy to set internet up meaning that all i did was story mode and missed the splatfest
It's always funny how nintendo fans always complain about new ips but when nintendo does bring them they always come with excuses on how they don't count
Even though splatoon 1 released with 5 maps available. They were not available for the first month. The first weeks of play only had the three salt spray, walleye, & Urchin and every 2 weeks, they added 1 more into rotation.
I remember seeing Inklings in Smash and thought the whole idea was stupid. But then I got Splatoon 3 to play with a bud who was having a rough go and now I'm hooked
Lol I used exact the same octoling in my thumbnail yesterday too and thx for this interesting video!! I think splatoon is really nintendo's best game ;)
I debut Splatoon at 20 Years Old, I still love Splatoon, and I am 28 this year, I’ve been playing Splatoon for 7 years, despite issues with Splatoon 3, like maps, online, and so on, we still need new content until 2024. 3 month cycle made the game dried on S3 right now, like I completed 3 catalogs, and take breaks. I really love the Splatoon Franchise, I played shooter games before. Maybe Splatoon PC or Splatoon 4 on new console would be good for gaming.
I'm glad Splatoon had continued to do so well, but I got tired of the multiplayer after Splatoon 2. I'm just sick if the map and mode rotations not allowing me to play whatever mode I want when I want. Also I got tired of playing with people who don't understand how to play because even 3 games in, people still don't understand the importance of covering turf even in the ranked modes at lower ranks, so it just got old too me. I literally just but Splatoon for the single player now because ever since the Octo Expansion, I think they found a formula that really works
@@Legend-of-Kai It's understandable as Nintendo classified blasters as shooters and brushes as rollers for the first 2 games. They were finally acknowledged as their own class in Splatoon 3, but it was silently glanced over.
3:19 Hi hello yes, As someone who has a special place on my heart for the absolute gem known as titanfall 2 I would like to say that it's an excellent game that is 5x better than any call of duty game due to its incredibly fast and dynamic gameplay. Now there's a good chance I love the game so much because my ADHD brain wants something fast all the time but hey. TLDR: Buy titnfall 2
Splatoons early dev team actually cared about games upkeep and was SUPER creative for the fact game development has been stale and lacking creativity for years (im talking since early mid 2000s .... its become more trend shit now and aesthetic/graphic appeal). Also for a Nintendo game had decent netcode from launch qhat i remember. Initially lacked content a bit but dev team showed they wanted the game to grow qith conatant updates. Id actually say the main 2 things that prolly almost stunted the growth of this game completely: 1) it being branded as 'youre a squid youre a kid' made many people think its a game just for casual kids. 2) it being a nintendo exclusive when at the time the console it was on was the Wii U which was ass beyond maybe 3-4 titles So yeah its a no brainer why this game took off ... also it appeals to both casual players with the clothes story salmon run stuff while also appealing to comp players without any obnoxious microtransactions and pay to win garbage
Splatoon 3 is taking the ip to new highs and it really shows and nothing is being put to waste ow and cod can learn something from Splatoon even halo can learn something from Splatoon
People complain about Nintendo relying on their first party inhouse games which consistently outsell every other game all while playing a million CODs, GTAs, and a bunch of cut-n-paste, cookie cutter open world games.
I don’t think Pokémon exactly counts as a Nintendo franchise, like sure they published it or whatever but they’re like a third owner of it like they own 32% of Pokémon and Game Freak and the other company own the rest so it’s less of a Nintendo franchise than Mario for example
Sad people are getting tired of splat3 Flat out can't play the game because of the terrible online And teams are disbanding Nintendo needs to step up because this could shape up the be the best game in the series but it needs servers asap
No they are not. Why is it the game still selling well and very addicting your saying it in a way that everysingle person as flat out stopped playing Splatoon 3 and went back to Splatoon 2. Might of said that this game series is dead but you will be bashed for spreading misinformation
Good vid as usual (well, a little bit too much Nintendo knob slobbering 😒. Did you really spin Splatoon not launching with a lot of maps as a positive, lol). I have Splatoon 2 and have put hundreds of hours into it but I cannot really justify buying 3 (especially because Nintendo first part titles rarely get deep discounts) as it doesn't play all that different. I'm actually shocked at how much 3 sold. Nintendo fans are ravenous man.
I wouldn’t knock it unless you’ve tried it. It’s the most polished out of the 3 games, special design is fantastic, and the feel of everything is just so… Splatoon. I hope you give it a try eventually, maybe just get a second hand copy somewhere. Trust the community when we say that this game is truly fantastic.
Ahaha thanks for calling me out on the knob slobbering. It's true though the game launching with only 5 maps was disappointing. Especially when you consider that around 10 maps were actually ready during the launch window but held back. But then you could also say they wanted to release them over time to allow for a consistent stream of new content. Idk guess it has its pros and cons. Splatoon 3 sales were definitely a surprise though as I remember a lot of people calling it splatoon 2.5 again lol
I love that Splatoon is getting much more popular, however, it’ll probably become Fortnite in where people are toxic (r/saltoon) and people dislike the community.
I mean, every online community is going to have its rough players. I think it’s best to just avoid toxic behaviors or go there to laugh at some salty as heck venting sessions. Regardless, here’s to hoping for the best
Maybe there'll be some bad apples but Ive basically never encountered them. Whenever in the lobby, I just see everyone squid flopping on the floor with eachother. I mean in what other games do you see people recreate the DVD screensaver between matches?
All money gained and no servers with this trash peer to peer....nice one Nintendo, making me pay for players be the server. And i not gonna even talk about the matchmaking....
I liked 1 and 2 very much, but 3 didn't do it for me. It is more of the same. They can do the 3 team battles at splatfests, but they're not actual 3 team battles. You can't adjust the 3 minute timer and the maps get duller every time and even get worse redesign like Mahi Mahi and Flounder Heights
