This is a journey through the cosmic scale of the Universe to The Orion Nebula. A wonder in the depths of space that can be seen with our eyes alone, hiding in the constellation of Orion, looking like a star.
If you'd like to support my ongoing project to make educational films about the Universe like this one do please check out my Patreon here: / epicspaceman
I'll be posted behind the scenes footage and will be putting some of my patrons in the next video! I hope to make these videos full time in the future so all the support is massively appreciated.
Otherwise if you enjoyed the video do please consider subscribing by clicking the link here:
/ @epicspaceman
There are few places if any in the Universe more beautiful than a nebula and The Orion Nebula is a particularly beautiful one. When I was a kid I couldn't believe a star in the constellation I was always looking at, Orion, wasn't actually a star. It led me to want to learn more about the Universe beyond the stars and I hope this film can do a little of that for others too.
It took me about 6 months to make this, my 2nd video about the Universe and even longer to make the 1st!
If you haven't already, do please take a look at my first video where I shrank the Universe down, then turned it into cereal, so that its titanic size makes more sense, plus who doesn't want to eat the Universe with some milk? Fortunately I'm getting faster at making these and hope to make the next one in 2 months rather than 6, then hopefully I'll be able to make them at a once a month speed after that.
For those interested in the technicalities of how I made this, you can find me on Instagram here / epic.spaceman where I show some of my behind the scenes though most of this is in my Patreon. I've been teaching myself VFX from scratch for a little over a year with Blender, a wonderful, powerful (and free!) programme, so that I could make these films. I also used a motion capture suit from Rokoko to get the micromovements as I presented. I think for my next video I'll move around a little more as I get more comfortable with the suit. I'm a filmmaker and director of photography as my day job and I've wanted to make videos about Space for ages but just didn't have the VFX skills, so my journey with Blender over the last 14 months has been amazing, I'd highly recommend it.

@calliope720 Год назад
@@barthvapour that's the microphone, man. On a different microphone his voice would not sound that way. There are options if he wants to reduce that. But as-is I don't notice anything egregious enough to be bothered by it. His voice is smooth, even, and warm, and he speaks with a pleasing cadence. It is perfect for narrating and an issue of the recording equipment doesn't detract from that for me.

I think you have a little of something called misophonia@@barthvapour, a few people have mentioned it in the comments, I'd never heard of it before. So lots of people really like the fact the microphone is close, for an almost ASMR like audio (though that was unintentional) and don't really understand where you're coming from but those with a little misophonia are instantly repelled by it. I've moved the mic away a bit further so it would be interesting to hear what you think of my latest one about the Moon.

Thanks so much, that was a wonderful comment to read so thanks for taking the time. So easy to get a bit jaded by life and just getting through it and living in a city like I do it’s not always easy to see the stars. But whenever I do get those chances and moments to look up, it doesn’t have to be for long, I always look for Orion and the nebula and just know there’s all this magical, amazing stuff like that out there. Just a little glimpse of something profound like that and the stars in general is like a little reset button and I turn into a little kid for a moment. Not sure what this says about me but one of my favourite quotes is by Oscar Wilde “we are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars”. Looking forward to making more and thanks again!

Love this! Thank you so much! I'm always trying to explain the scale of the universe to people. It's mind boggling. Even just the distances in our own solar system. Everything is way bigger and way further away than most people realize. That why the speed of light, or rather the speed at which things occur, is irrelevant. If you want to travel the galaxy you're gonna need FTL, warp speed, jump gates, or something like quantum teleportation, brother. Thanks again! LOVE THIS!!!!
@EpicSpaceman
@EpicSpaceman Год назад
So pleased you enjoyed it and thanks for the awesome comment! You’re definitely right on people’s perception of scale. I genuinely think if you could press a button and I could immediately, fully comprehend the size of the solar system alone, I’d probably throw up and curl up into a ball for a while 😂 It’s just soooo big out there and in everyday life we have no access to that kind of distance comprehension. The best I can do is make these metaphors to make them more bite sized and not overwhelming and be able to turn those crazy numbers into things more relevant that you can remember and take away. And yes humans aren’t leaving the solar system for a very long time! Thanks again!

The first time I was introduced to astronomy was in grade 12 at my high school. It was a pilot program that was only available in some high schools across Canada back in 1990. Would definitely like to do something on the JWST, I think Hubble is one of the best things humans have ever made, that first ultra deep field is so profound, perhaps the best image ever taken and JWST just continues that legacy. The VDO edition techniques was so stunning and perfectly wonderful, it also gave me a chill out motion with the tone of a voiceover, that was really nice. 100/100 sir 🥰🥰

English is not my mother tongue so I will lack vocabulary to fully able to describe what I feel and want to say but I will say it anyway. Not only everything about your videos are truly awe-inspiring, stunning and extraordinary, but also the fact that such content of yours like this video costing 6 months in production by yourself from 2 years ago has had such little recognition and viewership by the RU-vid algorithm, AND you still keep making it more and better regardless. I can hardly know which one amongst those things is crazier. But I would like to especially thank you for your great passion, incredible patience and dedication to keep bringing the beauty of the universe at an astonishing level of production quality to everyone despite the fact it is underrecognized and terribly non-profitable. You are one amongst the hidden gems of RU-vid and VFX animation videos.

These videos are incredible! I can't wait to see more! I've always been fascinated by the universe, and the night sky, and even woke up at 4 am this morning to try to see some fireballs from the Delta Aquariids (but no such luck) I look forward to seeing more of these videos. This is an excellent concept, and really helps to visualize the true awe-inspiring scale of the universe. I hope you consider doing something on the scale of some of the gargantuan blackholes compared to other celestial objects. I know that's been done, but not the way you do this. Thanks!

Something I've always wondered about is what do stars look like in other galaxies. What type of technology would it take to be able to photograph a star outside of the Milky Way?
@EpicSpaceman
@EpicSpaceman 2 года назад
I believe we can now, we have photos of galaxies like Andromeda and I suspect the LMC, where you can discern some individual stars and there are certain types of stars like neutron stars that are incredibly bright. Also there is at least one instance I’ve heard of where gravitational lensing has revealed a star far outside our galaxy, that’s very cool and rare.

I then stopped and realized how far away I was from home but it didn't make me feel sad because I knew I could get back in an instant and that's when I woke up. Scale is a weird and oddly disturbing idea sometimes lol and these videos make scale seem not only immense and true, but wonderful and inspiring. Thank you

Love the video, but really not a fan of the ultrawide aspect. Just feels like a waste of space when you know that it's all rendered footage. No reason you couldn't increase the frame size, right?
@EpicSpaceman
@EpicSpaceman 2 года назад
Definitely appreciate the feedback, it's certainly something I've thought about, partly it's because I personally like the 80s cinematic look, anamorphic lens and widescreen but it also speeds up my workflow because I have less to render. It's definitely something to consider for the future though, thank you!

As I get older, I also find it hard to feel wonder, but when I do, it's because I'm looking towards the creatures, the life, the geology, the ecology, the interactions between life forms and where they live. The web of life, what we call natural history and the study of ecology just captivates me. Grounds me. This world, all the life forms and interactions on it, fills me with wonder. Just like these videos do in regards to the macro.

As someone who loves spending time learning about space and everything beyond our world I really appreciate your work. Your videos are amazing and helps put things into perspective better than any other video’s regarding such topics. Every other video i’ve seen relating to topics such as this explain everything with just numbers which makes it very hard to comprehend (which makes sense as space and the worlds and life and in existence beyond our planet is too much for us to comprehend). But your videos make it a little easier for us to put things into a better prespective so i just wanna say on behalf of everyone else watching your content, thank you for your efforts and keep it up 👍

I am a Primary School teacher and I have shown these videos to my class who have really enjoyed them. One of my children in the class called Buddy would like you to make a video about the planet Pluto because it is a dwarf planet and he wants to know if it is extinct and to learn more about it. Many thanks. Logan in the class enjoyed The extreme scale of the Orion Nebula most of all because it had more facts and was fascinating.

What a wonderful comment, thanks so much for taking the time to write it and let me know how your class got to see and enjoy it. If you get a moment do please thank them for watching and let them know I’m so pleased they enjoyed them. It sounds like Logan has some great ideas, Pluto is an amazing little dwarf planet and if he were to draw out what the orbits of the planets looked like (flat circles) and then drew out what Pluto’s orbit looked like, we’d see quite quickly one of the reasons it’s so special. It might also be interesting to compare the size of Pluto with the size of the Moon. Or compare the size of one of Jupiters Moon’s Ganymede with the first planet Mercury. Lots of interesting places in our solar system!

I have admired your videos since the first. I like your vision, and we share the sense of wonder about this fascinating Universe we have the opportunity to explore. I'm a retired engineer, and retirement gave me the opportunity to explore the interests that I was forced to swallow and regurgitate whole as a student. The freedom to learn as much, or as little, of the subjects I choose has been a precious gift in these later years of my life. Follow your bliss for as long as you can. Engineering taught me that I am capable of doing whatever I set my mind to. Maybe you learned this, also? Your colors and lighting are better than most everything I've seen. I encourage you to continue. Best wishes, and I'll be tuning in. Thank you.

Thank you! I really appreciate your perspective and have found a similar outlook myself. I did engineering at University too and have also really been enjoying learning and ive been surprised what I enjoy now that it’s self directed. I think understanding a little physics and engineering and just being older and working hard on things over the years has given me the strong feeling of ‘if all these other people can do/learn/make that then so can I with enough work and passion’. Thanks again for the kind words and glad to have you here on this journey with me.
