@@Ownssoda I've always found that the people who play the absolute worst people on screen are the most nicest people ever in real life. Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Tony Todd, Doug Bradley are all super nice guys.
@@massiveprogressive9488 I know your comment is 6 months old so this is probably weird but I’ve noticed that too and I have a theory! I feel like people that are happy to play the nastiest characters (especially ones with real world parallels, metaphorical or otherwise) tend to be really good and genuine people and THAT is why they accept those roles. They know the bad guy is an important role, somebody has to do it and they themselves have nothing to hide. I think with characters like Art The Clown, it must be cathartic to play around with character traits you are completely detached from.
I remember when Terrfier 2 came out and I asked all my friends if they wanted to go, I offered to pay, I offered to drive, I went alone and was literally the only person in the theater. Still ate my nachos during that bedroom scene
I went to a special midnight screening with a buddy, and there were a lot of teens (like just turned 18 types) who came in to see this super gruesome movie. By the time the girl was flayed in her bedroom, most of them had already left again. The first batch went when the Pale Little Girl shat her organs out lmao
@patali2941 Anytime I hear something like this it never makes sense to me. If you go to see Terrifier 2, you HAVE TO know what your getting into unless you completely skipped Terrifer 1 or you just don't do your due diligence first. Why go see T2 if you've never even seen T1 though? Did these kid's not even watch the trailer or teasers first?
Welp I don't have much to say for this one, It's funny to think of Art as a natural disaster that comes once a year, swoops in, kills a bunch of people, then disappears. Imagine your weather forecast warning of the possibility of killer clowns lol
I enjoyed listening to your review as I love horror movies, but i really dislike when horror movies torture and maim primarily only women for the sake of shock so i really cant enjoy these movies.
I watched Terrifier 2 literally one year ago today on Halloween. I was by myself and also I got high beforehand 😭 so the scene with Allie was waaaaay too much for me. Not a great choice on my part lol I had to stop the movie and then I just skipped around the rest to see what happens. But I achieved feeling scared on Halloween so that I count that as a win!
The scene from terrifier 2 whith the bleach and salt... People say one of arts supernatural powers is controlling when and if his victims are allowed to die which is why she was able to make it that far into the scene. The fact that he looks shocked when her mom walks in tells me he was surprised she was still alive... Like he "let her go" and out of sheer will she stayed alive or he again kept her alive long enough to deliver the perfect trauma to the mother before turnung her head into a serving bowl.
10:30 , but then instead of a bang you hear a pop, and the gun is one of those clown guns with the “bang!” flag on a pole, but the pole is now imbedded in the guys head. Cut to Art silently laughing and pointing at the man while he screams in agony and blood spurts gratuitously around the room. Slaughter ensues before the guy fully bleeds out. End scene.
I really liked both terrfiers. Next to the gore and Art, I think the movies have great casting. Not oscar performances, but the actors all fit perfectly
I know I may have missed it/ it might have only been on patreon, but I would be interested if not on your opinion on “the descent”. I felt like all the characters were smart, it was beautifully shot, and was a really well done horror movie (and SPOILERS creature feature) overall.
The way they handle Vicky bothers me so badly. It's like they believe that victims of trauma are inevitability going to end up just as violent as the people that hurt them. Also ableist in a way considering her facial scarring and whatnot.
36:05 How I know I'm not cut out for horror movies: I am watching the censored version of this video. I... may have thrown up a little around the scene at 36:05. Yes, even though it's blurred. Yes, even though it's probably as ridiculous as you say.
David Howard Thornton is... Terrifier. His ability to create humour, horror and mind bending gore. Yet, he makes no sound in any form. This is what makes ART so scary and TERRIFYING. Can't wait for Terrifier 3
I remember in the movies the murders in the first movie were on the news and was well known cuz of the gruesome acts. Which is why Art becomes more of an icon in the second movie. Idk how youd be lost on that but i remember that part of the movie
i really liked the mime-y parts of terrifier which were chilling but hilarious. but yea the torture aspect of it does kind of get extreme i guess something that made me not take it so serious was how over the top it was? especially the 2nd one with the friend murdered at her own home.
The main thing I consider to be tasteless about Terrifier is the portrayal of the disfigured woman. Like, people who survived f.e. chpanzee or bear attacks sometimes look just like that. And her depictiom as a soulless monster has no deeper point.
okay. i loved the first terrifier as a lover of horror and gore. i liked that there was a lack of plot and all we had to do was just watch it happen. i have a shirt with art the clown on it. i love him. but ... the second terrifier. it was so bad i didn't even get halfway through the movie. your takes on these movies are perfect and i definitely agreed with you on just about everything. will definitely be subscribing!
Clicked to watch you talk about Art. Ended up buying a sweater from Cool Shirts lol. I NEEDED the Game Over sweater. I didn't even realize your were wearing it until I already bought my own lol.
"One day something will traumatize me I'm just waiting for that day to arrive" lol me tho. Have you tried A Serbian Film? I don't know if I'd say I found it traumatic but it does something that most horror does do, which is to really focus on the people and the art of the movie rather than just getting straight in to the gory slasher stuff. I find most movies that are this artsy and developed don't go as ham with the gore (especially in terms of sexual violence) and it hits a little different for me. IDK maybe I'm a wuss xD Shōjo Tsubaki was a hard watch for similar reasons but 30 years old animation doesn't really compare to flesh and blood and practical effects. I did notice the low bar of not punishing sexuality xD Art hates everyone equally, he doesn't slut shame lol. Speaking of I actually watched Talk To Me for the first time yesterday (specifically because you mentioned it was a good film in one of your other vids so I thought I'd give it a go. Awesome movie btw thanks for that) and I thought the scene where the teenage boy went and cuddled up in bed with his sister's friend was adorable, and it made me realize just how rare it is to see non-romantic and non-sexual relationships between teens in these movies (or in movie in general) unless they're blood relatives. Like we're talking about literal child (I think the characters are meant to be 14 and 17) and I'm just waiting for them to make it weird and blissfully relieved that they didn't. Hella low bar but I can't unsee it now, I'm watching all my movies with the eye of "why you making it weird though." The commentary on British take outs made me cackle xD I'm from a small army town and yep can confirm lol. Also hey! Leave Terrifier 2 alone! I love that movie! Nothing sends me to sleep faster than that boring slog xD
While I get your point to an extent. I like terrofier 2 I think the cat and mouse fight between Art the clown is understandably. I look at it a bit differently. We know that Seanna and her brother are different. I look at it as if Art could kill them like normal, he would but he can’t. Why he can’t we don’t know. Art is such a violent character it’s interesting seeing him react to people who can’t just brutally murder. Also I was pretty convinced that Seanna was going t to die cause unlike other final girls Terrofier allows the servivors to get freakin brutalized if you’ve only watched terrofier 1 Art hasn’t had that much build up but if you watched him since all hallows eve. Art has been built up as a strong, unstoppable beast. Like you said if Art sees you, you’re dead. But for a reason we don’t know Art can’t just simply kill them like normal but he can still brutalize him.
I really liked the first movie the first time i saw it by myself. Recently watched it with my girlfriend and showed her for the first time and while shes the type to be squeemish or be scared of this type of movie, she was really mostly bored throughout and so was I. We both agreed the over the top gore got goofy but not fun in an evil dead type of way. The effects weren't as good as i remember and the story and characters definitely arent there so left with disliking the movie. Still haven't seen the second one but rewatching made it so i didnt really feel like it😅
Terrified 2 is a significantly better movie. The aesthetic, the sound design, the period (based on 80s aesthetic) accurate magical bullshit, was fantastic.
I am halfway through part 2, and I wasn't hating it, but I kinda just got bored, like "Jesus I get it!" I'll finish it someday when I'm in the mood. But these are films I can't really find the urge to criticize beyond that. Like, yeah, what do you expect. The film accomplished what it set out to do, so whether you like it or not, it succeeded. Sure, I don't love excessive pointless gorefests like I used to now in my late 30's, but I still appreciate it...when I'm in the mood. Lol And Lol, yeah, that was my problem with the saw bit. Unfortunatley, my morbid curiosity got the best of me in my 20's and I peeped in on...one is one too many...but, one too many cartel videos, and Art sawed through that girl waaaay too quick. When it takes someone over a minute to saw through someones spinal cord, aint not way you are going through the whole damn body that quick unless it's a chainsaw. And I know this is morbid, but I remember watching one of those said videos way back when, and remember, after watching a dude get a chainsaw, and then watching his friend next to him get the knife, thinking "Damn, the knife guy must have really messed up, cuz the chainsaw was straight mercy compared to that. Still, brutal scene in the film. She did not deserve that. I feel icky when I start to watch the film again just knowing what is going to happen to her. Maybe that is the point. And, people, don't let your morbid curiosity get the best of you. The world is awful in places. You don't need to see it to know...or maybe you do. I just know I got morbidly depressed for an abnormally long while after a certain point of watching that crap. Like clinically depressed. Like, I saw enough to absolutely know that I never need to see anything like it again. Maybe that's what stupid people like me need. Hell if I know. Seek it out if you want, but don't say I didn't warn you. lol
i think both of the movies would be better if the protagonists had been given some upper hand to level the playing ground. Vicky could've been a janitor who used to work at that building, and therefore could hide from Art easier. idk about the other girl and her brother tho
Ngl, all hallows eve is the scariest movie I've seen. It's not a good movie. It just scares the hell out of me. I've seen plenty of horror movies, from the classics, to newer stuff like sinister, hereditary, barbarian, etc. But all hallows eve is what got me.
Terrifier and films like it feel more like a resume of the special effects designers than actual fiction. It's to show off what they can do with makeup and practical effects and then connect those with 'plot'.
funny enough, iirc you are dead on. the director, damien leone, got his start as an fx artist. he knew he had some absolutely banger physical effects, and so he wanted to make a movie aorund that, and we got terrifier lol. me personally, i love them both
Heh. I'm reminded of the behind the scenes for Mr Sleep. There's a scene where the evil group tortures a kid to death. Prior to shooting, the actors were super excited for the scene. "Hell yeah, were gonna kill a kid!" But the kid gave such an effective performance, they started to feel legitimately bad.
I remember watching Dr. Sleep in theaters and feeling horrified and pure dread when that scene came up. That kid is wayyyy too good at his job, I remember getting chills and everything. Just... way too good at his job, lol.
Id say that friday the 13th is the rare exception with the "pumishing sex with murder" trope because like, its where the trope comes from and had diagetic reasoning for it. Everyone else just decided it was how a slasher works
Gotta say, the fact that there isn't any overtly sexual violence is a big part of why I like the Saw movies so much. It's just nice not to have to gloss over that stuff. As for Terrifier... I mean, the whole sawing thing was a bit... =/. But Terrifier 2 subverted expectations by having a "friend's boyfriend" character who isn't a total asshole.
I haven't seen terrifier but one movie that made me super uncomfortable is Texas chainsaw massacre 2 (from the 80s). At one point Leatherface tries to fxck a girl with his chainsaw I couldn't get through that one as a survivor. Saw is a series that just kinda makes my stomach hurt
Tbh I dont even think it was supposed to be overtly sexual, I think Leone was just going for "what can I do that will have people barfing in theaters."
Not sure where I found it, but I’m pretty sure the things that Art is meant to be a little ambiguous, which makes him more terrifying. Especially with what he does to certain victims. I mean, there’s no question in my mind that he did more than just mutilate Dawn and Cat Lady’s naked bodies up. He feels like a literal mix of serial killers/rapists like John Wayne Gacy, Ed Gein, and even Dahmer. And shockingly, those guys were extremely brutal to their victims.
Terrifier itself is very mean spirited and that's why I think Terrifier 2 is better. You can have a fun gorefest movie but Terrifier #1 is really weirdly mean to women. Why does he cut a woman's breasts off and wear them? Why does he cut a woman in half vagina first? Why doesn't he do similar things to men? It's just kinda weird.
Because the characters he encountered were women, simple, and he did similar things to men btw, getting stabbed in the head and your neck cut off is not better than breats cut off
Terrifier is a very odd beast. On one hand, I was blown away by the amount of work that went into the practical effects, and it's clear that the people who made the movies have a love for the genre. On the other hand, it's all so mean spirited and that was the most uncomfortable I've felt watching a movie. That's definitely the point, but good lord.
I'm with you on the uncomfortable feelings. I've never really had any movie where I was just like no I don't feel good watching this and stopped watching. This made me stop about a third of the way through the movie
@@cameronmcmahon9955LOL Once again, reactions like this are the point of the movie. I love that it goes above so many peoples head considering its not that difficult of a concept to grasp
Dude, a friend convinced me to watch terrifier a while back and personally I hated it. This channel is honestly one of the very few on RU-vid I trust to talk to me about that move without re traumatizing me tbh
As someone who never really got into the slasher genre, it's interesting to hear such a well written perspective so different to my own. It's certainly given me more of an appreciation for the intense special effects and acting that goes into making these such a visceral experience. (Also noticed the Bugsnax music in the background, which both weirdly fit the atmosphere, and was on brand with visceral horror.) Keep up the good work, was a very entertaining video all around! :)
As someone that detests these types of movies, I am really glad to hear someone talk about them who enjoys them. I still hate them of course, but it's still cool to hear your thoughts.
I think I only got a little bit of the way through the first Terrifier before I knew it was not for me. I never got into the invincible slasher where the main draw was seeing women you aren't meant to care about get tortured and killed. Men may die horribly but they don't get the lingering camera gaze women do and it just leaves me feeling ick. Only time I enjoyed a slasher villain was the early Scream ghost face as he was obviously human and could like, trip and fall down. You could conceivably escape which made it more interesting to me then another Jason or Shape. If you're going to have an invincible monster something other than "a dude" would be nice and while these movies at least have a costume, still too human.
Definitely agree. Honestly from the previews I thought that the 2nd movie would buck that Invincible Slasher Dude trend by at least adding an Invincible Slasher Little Girl Sidekick participating in the kills equally which would’ve been unique but from the sound of it Art alone was still the prevailing threat.
"Theyre always the antagonist's daughter" Incorrect. Sometimes theyre the estanged, surprise child of a past protagonist/mentor character. Depends on the fandom.
I actually felt incredibly disturbed by the two 'big' scenes you showed here and had a bit of trouble getting to sleep. I don't have an issue with gore generally so I wondered why it got to me so much! But then I thought, its such incredible maiming that you could probably make a case for it falling under body horror (which I absolutely cannot take).
@BellaLugos Nice observation! The term body horror sometimes seems to be casually used for a lot of gore, but it’s definitely a difference in the feelings they evoke. And like you pointed out, there is this kind of zone where they meet, and it’s not all that clear what is what. Sorry for the rambling, your comment just made me think more about the concepts!
I love Art, he scares the absolute crap out of me, I hate clowns in the first place. The fact that he makes no noise the entire movie creeps me out so much.
@@gRinchY-op5vr scares me more than the time my friend Nick gave clowns in a haunted house my name, and told them I was coming in the next group, he got body checked for that one.
I love horror, both the pretentious stuff and the low budget stuff and everything in-between. I just personally found the terrifier movies boring and kinda hollow. It didn’t really have any charm or character to keep me interested
Funnily enough, Art is one of those villians that if you are actually just nice to him, he probably won't kill you. Most of his victims are people who were disrespectful to him.
@@richmondyayarea Nah she was touching him and being creepy. We see multiple times throughout both movies Art clearly hates being touched. Not that it justifies it obviously lmao
The Terrifier movies are an example of how I think shock horror should be done. The films have a ton of gore there for shock value, but they also have tongue planted firmly in cheek and aren't afraid to take the piss out of certain slasher tropes (the girl tearing the plastic Art was trying to kill her with and Art pulling out a gun while said girl was monologuing being the biggest examples), all helped by Art himself, who I find a VERY entertaining villain thanks to the great perfomance given.
re: phones in film. have you ever tried to take a picture of a screen of any kind? it often has distortion, some things much worse than others. i've always kinda assumed that's why people replace computers, phones, etc in post since i imagine that makes it difficult to get a good shot of whatever they want you to see. i've only ever noticed ppl leaving it alone as a stylistic choice. since these movies are so heavily reliant on practical effects, they may not have had someone to do it very well. or spent so much money on the practicals they couldnt afford better vfx - a trade off im happy to take if a film has to choose between the two tbh. i personally prefer great practicals over lots of vfx in movies which was kinda part of my problem with the second one. the digital stuff toward the end looked sooooo cartoonishly cheesy lol
Both of these movies are dogshit, and that becomes easy to see when you remember one key thing: All works of fiction are deliberately crafted. It's not as simple as "this character is doing stupid things in this situation." It's that the character is *MADE TO DO STUPID THINGS* by a writer who only wants THAT result. And the Terrifier movies are so painfully obvious in their intent to showcase violence (most often against women in egregious ways) for the sake of violence that they don't even bother with any effort in other categories. They're nothing more than vacuous effects reels in search of a plot that lazily gave up on looking for that plot after 2 minutes. It's a choice that none of the characters are developed in any meaningful way because the movie doesn't care about them, and it doesn't want you to either. It only cares about propping up Art the Clown as some horror "icon." Only problem is if there's no reason to care about any character that Art encounters, then how is he truly scary? He's on autopilot most of the time (making his actions routine), and there's nothing to invest in? That's not really horror anymore...
I'm so glad the women in Afghanistan aren't allowed to attend movie theaters. Otherwise they my see this mean movie and be exposed to misogyny. Thank goodness men in Afghanistan have enough respect for their women to shield them from such things.
Feminism win! In this movie women get horrifically murdered and mutilated, but at least not for slut-shaming reasons :D ! (I'm just joking. I don't like these kinds of movies but it was interesting to hear why you enjoy them.)
I'm so glad you mentioned the poo! I've never seen anyone else talk about it. I've always wanted to ask Damien Leone if Art just, like... stinks of shite? And how is he never covered in it? All I could think about watching the first one was how much he must stink & his hands are just all over people's faces when he's attacking them🤮 No one ever talks about the added awfulness of him just reeking
i love your content so much. i'm literally only 8 seconds into this video but big big appreciation for the emetophobia warning!! really excited to watch this video and the rest of your future uploads
I have to be honest: the scene of the naked woman being sawed in half and the scene in the sequel where a young girl is tortured in her bedroom with salt... it was too much for me. In the sense that I genuinely questioned the incredible level of violence inflicted on female characters.
Those were the scenes that really got to me in the Terrifier movies. While I enjoyed the 1st movie over the 2nd one, I still couldn’t help but feel a bit weird about it.
Yeah, I had to keep watching to realize this wasn't another "Haha, let's off women 'cause it's funny" 'horror' movie. This graphic, and I fault no one who doesn't want to watch it, but at least it isn't a woman-hating horror show for the incels.
I’m not one for gore in general, but films that feel like they revel in violence against women, as most slashers do, just add another layer of nausea and disturbance for me. I haven’t seen the terrifier movies but from what I’ve heard the most brutally violent killings are of women and that just doesn’t sit right with me. I love horror as a genre, but I just don’t want to watch women being murdered by men. You just can’t detach the connotations of that imo so if you’re not trying to make a point about violence against women in the real world then it feels very much like, just, unquestioned misogyny. The fact that the majority of mainstream movies have always been about men, and then the genre which features brutal violence and murder mostly focuses on female characters being the victims of that violence will never not make me angry and disappointed.
Here’s the thing with Terrifier: it reminds me a lot of the Hatchet series. Movies made strictly for gore and crazy deaths, but what makes me enjoy Hatchet, while really disliking Terrifier, is that Hatchet is straight up goofy and all deaths in the films are directed to be goofy and not taken serious. Terrifier on the other hand does, as a lot of people say, feel extremely mean spirited. Every death is dragged out for minutes upon minutes and progressively get more and more cruel. The Terrifier films especially feel cruel towards women specifically. Idk, just something about the cruelty of the films turns me off of them and gives me no interest in rewatching the movies as opposed to the Hatchet movies, where I can turn it on and not feel uncomfortable after watching them. That said, it’s clear that everyone behind the Terrifier films LOVE what they’re doing and really do put in a very impressive amount of work into the films.
The thing about video game gore is it never bothers me, film gore really messes me up, and terrifier even when talked about in audio makes me wanna bash my phone, especially the second film
I hate excessive gore in movies that serves absolutely no purpose to the story, especially when the worst of said extreme violence is inflicted towards women. Therefore I refuse to watch Terrifier or any other dumb shock-jock movies.
Terrifier feels like a fundamentally pointless film. It's gore for gores sake and it purely exists so elitists who have been so thoroughly desensitized to suffering that they can laugh at graphic war shots on the news can ridicule those of us with a soul for being uncomfortable watching it. Its just... Boring. The practical effects are impressive, sure, but fully wasted in this senseless drivel.
Your rant about understanding that characters aren't going to act on information they don't know is really weird considering you expected a fearful and panicked woman to be Sherlock Holmes and deduce by the sound and speed of a chain she can't see's swinging to predict the approximate location of a super natural murderer.
The 2nd one was pretty good until it got to the bedroom scene and just…it was both way too ridiculous in so many ways and also the first gore scene that made me physically sick in quite a while. I watch (and read) A LOT of extreme horror with tons of gore but the whole scene just put me way off. Also the rest of it just felt so long, it just felt way too bloated overall. I’m hoping Leone trims the 3rd movie down more and cleans the story up a bit bc so much in the 2nd one felt just meandering. And yes, Art is the best part of both movies haha.
Watched Terrifier 2 at a sleepover with a bunch of friends, i was asleep during most of it and somehow only managed to wake up during the more gorey parts 😭 The only parts that got us were when he put bleach on that girl and in the end when the lady gave birth to his head 💀 It was fun to watch with friends tho
I will admit that I'm just about starting the video but I will say that I fully look forward to your opinion on Terrifier. I'm not one for torture porn movies like Saw and this movie, of course, and only know what I know about both franchises because of the channel Dead Meat. So I will say that I fully appreciate the amount of work the special effects team put into these films, they truly did an amazing job. I personally could not stomach it at all (I will never be able to watch these movies, as just the descriptions of what happens makes me a bit dizzy and nauseous) but from what I've seen a heard behind the scenes, I'm not too surprised that people enjoy and appreciate this series for what it is. Especially Art, I can barely even look at any pictures of that man without feeling deeply disturbed. (Even if I didn't know what he did, he just gives an unsettling vibe... and I hate clowns lol)
@Person-eh9nr Lots of people throw it into that category. But my point was the excessive violence and gore that can be compared to Terrifier. Thank you for the input though.
Woo! Love to see so much content from you! I wish you well with your future videos, as well! I hope you get lucky with the Algorithm, since I feel that you're underrated. Many monetizations to you, on this Blessed Samhain!
She never "wiggles away".... Art is just playing with her the whole time because he is a Cambion that enjoys human suffering and pain. That's why he loves and audiance and always plays with his "food"
I'm sure you've already had a dozen folks point it out, but the acid murder in Terrifier 2 is set up at the morgue where Art finds the glass bottle of dissolving juice on a shelf as he's filling his bag. I think you even showed the scene right after discussing the coroner's murder! Also, great video and I'm with you, Terrifier 2 desperately needed an editor. Every single scene went on waaaay too long.
David Howard Thornton-- Art the Clown of The Terrifier films-- is local to Huntsville, AL (my home town) and got his start in children's theater at Fantasy Playhouse, which means he has, you know, mime training ;-).
13:28 - Pretty certain that the bloke was an exterminator and not a janitor? Loved the review. To me, the second one felt too Hollywoody, plot-wise. It was tropy and had a blend and forced chosen one thing going on. Can’t wait for the third!
Yeah, he was an exterminator! She probably got confused because iirc, there was a scene where he was cleaning. And I agree with you on the 2nd movie! The plot felt pretty half-assed.
Ngl, I'm able to sit through a lot but as soon as things get scattalogical, I'm out. That's why it took me forever to go back to and finish the first movie. And i feel stupid about this. Like, oh? You can watch Irreversible just fine but a little poop is the deal breaker? Yes. Yes it is. Especially like ones like the Art bathroom scene.
Your mention of Tom and Jerry made me kind of want a horror film with an equally horrifying pair of antagonist and protagonist fighting to take/preserve the life of one or more individuals for their own reasons that have similar levels of disdain for the actual physical or mental wellbeing of the victims.
Ah, Terrifier. I thought both movies were great, although the second is a bit too long for my liking, especially the Carnival part in the second movie. However, I didn't mind Siena being a Mary Sue for once - slasher killers are ridiculously OP and just keep coming back and killing everybody (Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, etc). Why can't the protagonists bullshit their powers too. Why do only the killers get fun powers? I thought it was good subversion of expectations. For the first time, I liked seeing a Mary sue on the screen. Great vid. Cheers!
