The FAA comes-clean on how RID will work (it's bad news)

Based on the contents of a video recently uploaded by the FAA, the future of the RC plane and drone flying hobby looks bleak. It seems that unless the exemption for sub250g craft is removed, remote ID will utterly fail as a method of increasing safety and security. We must also ask questions as to why broadcast RID is also going to become a surveilance network, spying on innocent recreational hobby flights.
The FAA video can be seen here:

Here's a worst case situation: You fly your drone at a local park (with ID) from 7:00 to 7:15, then go home. At 7:20 a non ID drone fly's at the same park and scares Mom and her new baby. Who are the police going to hold accountible ? You! Because you were the only one in the database aound that time.
@xjet

Absolutely -- this is why I predict that far too many innocent drone owners will have their front doors busted down by SWAT teams as a result if RID failing to delivery what it promises.

Psst. In your quite correct scenario, realize the 720 drone can be entirely fictitious, and will be. 😉

I have been flying rc planes since I was 11 years old. I am 58 now. I have never harmed anyone or damage any property. Aviation enthusiasts would never put a full scale aircraft in harms way. I currently fly over a farmers field across the rd from my house. Which is at least 10 miles from the closest airport . What or who am I hurting? I think this remote I'd is ridiculous.

• In the "friendly" Danny might be tased, tackled, and beat (light to medium severity). THEN they'd figure out the federal charges, probably at least domestic terrorism. Whatever might "stick". Much later at the trial, his lawyer will bring up how Danny was following the law, and only if law enforcement had used the system in place they would have known Danny was operating under the law. • Now, hear this tragic tale: A local group is using drones to distribute illegal drugs. Being inconsiderate criminals it turns out that not only are the drones they use unregistered but also do not have Remote-ID modules. The criminals delivered some drugs to one particular property via drone. Witnesses saw a drone come over the property and drop something. Other witnesses said they saw someone operating a drone nearby. Coincidentally on that same day a father was operating his camera drone in the adjacent park. He was getting footage of his kid kicking a soccer ball around as that is their latest passion. He being a law-abiding citizen has registered his drone, AND it send's out Remote-ID data. Two weeks later during the investigation a detective does a "historical search" in the new government drone database. He's happy he finally gets a "hit", finds that this time they have data of a person operating a drone near the property that day. "Finally a break in the case!" the detective thinks to himself. With the eyewitness testimony, the drone data, and the evidence of the previous crimes in hand, the detective is able to secure a "no knock" warrant to the house considering there are known "armed and dangerous" drug dealers involved and it's a "high risk" situation. The next Wednesday night when the family is fast asleep, they hear their front door being smashed in, the wife screams, the children are wailing. This dad being a staunch 2nd amendment supporter, grabs his weapon and goes to confront the home invader(s) (as is his right). Running through his adrenaline clouded head is that he's going to "END THIS THREAT". He pop's out of his bedroom door, weapon raised, and before he can even process and react he hears "GUN!" and almost immediately hears gunshots. As he's passing out, amid the shouts of "DROP THE GUN" and "IS THERE ANYONE ELSE?!", as his crumpled frame is manhandled and handcuffed, he hears the unmistakable pained screams of his children. He drifts off so confused, scared and in pain, still not understanding what's going on and who these intruders are. Directly behind the wall he was just standing in front of, his children were cowering under their blankets in their bunk bed . You see, drywall is a poor shield for bullets on a good day. To the high-velocity rounds fired from the rifles the officers used, the wall may as well not have been there at all. Years later at the civil trial, his Widow gets a settlement from the city. Turns out the bodycam footage confirmed the wife's testimony (disproving the involved officer's testimony) that the S.W.A.T. and Drug Task Force team that entered the home did NOT identify themselves. In their hyped-up state where they were "sure" they were entering a "drug house" that was pat of a local "drug ring". They simply forgot to identify themselves in that high-stress situation. The money is "good" even though much of it goes to the lawyer. It allows her to buy a house so she (and the surviving child) have their own home again. She find little solace in the payout as it doesn't bring her family back. Unfortunately she had lost the previous house to the bank. There was only one income and the husband's life insurance did not pay out until she sued them (which took some time). They held out as there was "some question" as to the "guilt" of the dad and they thought they would not have to pay out. Fortunately she had family they were staying with, she couldn't even imagine (and didn't dare to) what would happen if she didn't have that safety net. Don't think something like this can't happen because it happens already. Now there will be a new way innocent people can be swept up in this crap.

People may be tempted to discount that story as "impossible" however, I think the more intelligent reading it will realize that it's far more likely than the contrived scenarios painted in the FAA's video. The picture you paint is, sadly, all too likely to become a reality :-(

When I first discovered drones (around 2010) I used them for years for photogrpahy for my own real estate listings. Then I learned I needed a license to do what I had already been doing. I looked into obtaining the license and it's basically a real pilots license for flying real airplanes that carry people and there are real licensing fees and they must be renewed often. After just a few years of these licensing fees, the fees cost more than my drone. So now I no longer fly. They took something I enjoyed doing, did safely and turned it into too much hassle to make it worthwhile.

The sad part about all of this is the war in Ukraine has shown that a large commercial drone is an excellent improvised weapons platform. The bones of this I saw back in the day when I sold some of the first digital cameras that had built in GPS tagging, I joked about the camera stating, "you are not authorised to take a picture in this area." The next obvious stage will be remote shutdown, the drone will not fly without authorisation.

My thoughts. Scenario! A Mission is built up in Mission planner, I don't need remote control or telemetry. I don't need FPV. Max height is just above the tree line. I have set the path so that it limits observation, flying behind buildings, small hills. If my activity is so nefarious the UAV is disposable, cost is no objective! I don't need to return to launch (RTL). I did not fit the ID device or transponder or paint it orange or have a flag trailing or have a flare discharging. It's seen by Karen, a non gender specific person who has nothing better to do! Panicked, Karen searches for her mobile phone and with the dexterity of a seasoned busy body opens the UAV identifying app. My UAV is now well out of range or flying low behind RF scattering objects that Karen's phone shows nothing. Karen phones the local authorities, waits while they devour their last doughnut and a mouthful of Starbucks something damp! The UAV has now flown one mile, (one point six Kilometres for those who live outside of the USA) from the launch site. The mission's conclusion is to drop hot-dog, with mustard and ketchup on the security guard at the local toilet paper factory! Who, with nefarious intent is going to register, fit any identifying device, mark or broadcast media on their UAV. Once a mission is set, apart from jamming the GPS frequency, nothing is going to be deployed, unless it's a really serious target that will be able to shoot down a relatively small UAV. If terrain following systems are used, and It's getting very reliable with MP, then even GPS jamming is not going to work. My conclusion is that only law abiding UAV pilots will fit a device in compliance with the regulations. Even when such devices add to the complexity of the UAV and so add an extra risk of causing a malfunction, add extra weight causing more potential impetus and seriously infringe on their personal rights and safety. No one, intent on nefarious activities is going to comply with any regulations. Any such activity is going to be concluded by the time the authorities have reacted. No matter what surveillance systems are deployed, regulation will not stop the VERY LOW antisocial, dangerous or terrorist use of UAV devices. And what’s to stop a UAV purporting to be a pizza delivery from carrying a far more illicit or dangerous cargo!

I've been flying RC for over 30 years now. I was expecting to retire and fly my aircraft all day long. This is going to prevent me from enjoying my retirement. In my lifetime, I've seen our government change from representing the population to ruling it. Corporate entities have bought and sold our leaders so many times, the legitimacy of our lawmakers and courts has been damaged to the point of no return. ...And so now they are after our hobbies... FAA: We're concerned with your safety. Jeff Besos: Thanks for taking those toys out of my skies. Here's a little $ for you and the kids... If the state of Alabama can ignore a ruling from the Supreme court, I think we should all jump on that bandwagon. If everyone ignored the FAA in protest, we might get somewhere.

The private property thing is unconstitutional taking without just compensation. Surely for altitudes below treetop level, and probably below the level where antennas require FAA notice, and really below any altitude where other drones/aircraft would be considered trespassing or otherwise in violation. Surely a drone operated below such an altitude on private property is private, same as a golf ball.

@@FourthWayRanch Pepper spray is not legal in some states in the US... Where I'm at its considered a "dangerous weapon", and as such since there is no 2nd amendment (according to politicians), you are not just allowed to have dangerous weapons like nunchucks, throwing stars, or brass knuckles even though you'd think all of those would be covered by the 2nd amendment (but there is no 2nd amendment in this country). So is it worth getting arrested for that? Choice is yours, but I have a saying "when commiting crimes, make sure its worth it", its like if you had stock on a Glock, well you might as well throw a Glock switch on it too, and a barrel muffler, and a vertical front grip, and have a drum mag, because its pretty much treated the same as if you just had a smooth barrel on a standard Glock. I'd also rather have that than pepper spray, because a crazy person with a knife swinging around violently is still a danger even if they can't see you because you just made them angry, but a drum of 9mm might take care of that pretty quick.

Yep, I have been saying right from the get-go that Network Remote ID was coming, despite the temporary back-up the FAA did. In their words "we will not require network Remote ID *at this time* " so it was always clear that this was the end-game. One only has to stop and think then that network RID requires UTMs to manage all those authorizations and traffic flows. The FAA says that these will be commercial entities. To develop and implement a UTM will cost hundreds of millions of dollars -- money that must be recovered out of profits. So who do you think will be paying the cost for those UTMs? Will it be the delivery drones that we won't see any time soon? Or maybe the eVTOL airtaxis that are supposed to be just around the corner? No, these UTMs will be built long before either of those industries becomes commercial viable so we (the hobby) as the single largest users of the airspace for unmanned operations will likely end up paying through the nose for our right to fly. "pay to fly" will become the way forward. :-(
