Yeah for sure, I've seen it twice already! The first time my brother and I were eventually compelled to go see it over an hour away as our town's theater with 12 screens was still foolish enough til recently to start showing it. I'm glad others convinced them of their senses so we could easily see it again. There's so many details I missed the first time and I'm typically pretty good at not missing very many details. There's just such widely detailed film it's easy to miss some things.

Of course it's brilliant. Very atmospheric, every detail of the era is described with amazing precision and love. The beginning immediately plunges you into the idyll of the film masterpieces of the early 1970s with their social realism and moral purity. Both the shaking of the credits on the screen and the entire technical ambiance of the films of the 70s greatly detail this masterpiece and make it truly authentic. Against the backdrop of the slop movies of today, this film seems like an echo of a paradise gone forever...

Alexandre Payne is a fantastic stylist. This isn't news to cinephiles. His directorial prowess is on full, albeit subtle, display here. A finely crafted paean to 70s, character-driven bildungsroman film, just self-aware enough to allow for that genre's tropes to slip by without seeming hackneyed. The plot hinges around two characters, pupil and teacher, slowly discovering, through different social situations, why each are the way they are. If I happened upon this movie, it would take me a hot minute to discern that it actually isn't from the 70s. Giamatti dishes his usual wry charms. Two Thumbs heavenwards.

(Whoops you really got me reflecting on that director's career.) Yeah for sure as it was the beginning of Shyamalan's long winter into weak filmmaking. He was pretty great as usual, but still struggled to take it into good film status. Proving that not even he can save a weak and problematic script. There was a noticeable drop off from that to his film before and it took what about ten years to start coming out of that winter with The Visit and the even better Split. He fairly stumbled with Glass, but Old was really good. Knock At The Cabin is pretty good, but definitely a very heavy movie. You really need something with some humor afterwards, so I don't know how often I'd rewatch it compared to others of his I've liked. I think Unbreakable is still my personal favorite even if I can't objectively say it's his strongest. It's overall pretty great despite the classic forehead slapper of a line, ''I'll just shoot him once!''

Funny story that no one asked for, every time I see Paul Giamatti I think back to the first time I saw the movie Sideways. My family used to have family movie nights where we one of us would choose a movie to rent from Blockbuster and we would all have to watch that. My mom rented Sideways, not knowing anything about it. And, this isn't a spoiler but, there's a scene where Thomas Haden Church runs toward the camera completely naked. I was 12, my brother was 9 and my mom was HORRIFIED. My dad still makes fun of her "kid-friendly" movie choice to this day. Also, if you haven't seen the movie John Dies at the End, you totally should. Giamatti kills it, as usual.

Bart died way, way too young (like 50 years old).
