Dr. Taimur Khan, a master sarangi player, reflects on the decline of sarangi playing in South Asia. He explores its cultural significance, challenges faced by modern musicians, and the impact of changing musical trends. Along with discussing the need to preserve this art, Dr. Khan also performs, showcasing the beauty of this traditional instrument. Dr. Taimur Khan's musical journey began with the guitar in 1990, performing and composing in Rawalpindi and Islamabad until 1996. His fascination with string instruments led him to explore the rabab, sitar, and violin, before discovering the sarangi in 1996, inspired by Ustad Nazim Ali's recording. While studying medicine at The Aga Khan University in Karachi, Dr. Taimur began sarangi lessons in 1997 with Ustad Mubarik Ali. After his guru's passing in 2002, he continued his training with Ustad Mehfooz Khokhar and later with Ustad Allah Rakha, Pakistan's last senior sarangi maestro, until his death in 2015. Dr. Taimur has performed at Radio Pakistan, Lok Virsa, PNCA, Tehzeeb Foundation, APMC, and internationally in Norway. In 2022, he served as the Head of Music at the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA), Karachi. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
