The Fagradalsfjall Volcano Revisited With a Thermal Drone Camera

Shot with the thermal drone over the largest crater from the 2021 eruption and it's possible to see how it has cooled down. I have to admit that i had some problems there and failed to get all the shots I wanted due to all this switching back and forth between the cameras, however, it was sunny and therefore not the best conditions for thermal view so it's a good reason for me to go back soon.

interesting how the lip and side are still showing signs of heat but nothing in the crater , you would have thought it would be the other way about but then again i guess that a lot of the rim and sides have now fallen in as they cool and get brittle and could be possibly hiding any remaining heat. the lava flows were as hot as i expected and i assume that you had a good scan around the hills looking for any remaining hot spots ? , as wasnt there some fears about vip hill in the first eruption due to the ground feeling warm in areas with the grass dyeing off ?. i think ill have to watch this again later on the big screen when i have a bit more time , hopefully you will do more vids in the area , and how many batteries did you go through with having to switch back and forth and the fly overs ?.
@JustIcelandic
@JustIcelandic Год назад
This was the last battery I had charged and ready that long day, this location was not on the list since we didn't know if we could get the car close enough to make the rest of the way with the drone, but we did, and also found out it's not a good to scan this after sunny day like we had, however, I came back with so much info to use to plan a full scan from 2 takeoff locations, and this will take me at least 3-5 hrs. to thermal scan to complete lava fields from 2021/22
@mikewright447
@mikewright447 Год назад
@@JustIcelandic well its still a learning curve so every time you go out you will probs come back with a new plan and i hope the batteries are not that expensive to sstop you having "an box full" , are they specific for the drone or are they a general drone battery ? , just curious .

Also, thank you for not turning your videos into random data points in a haphazard analysis. I see many people misunderstand the information thermal cameras bring so they ask for absolute data when relative data is what we should feast on here.

WOW! They say it will be hot for many years but I'm kind of surprised by how much gas is still coming out of it. I would have never ever guessed that the rim would be hotter than the crater. Great overlay at 1:05 that is perfectly aligned and showing the thermal image's context to the wider area :-) Wasn't the magma always reaching the surface under the back wall / north wall of the crater anyway? Rather than directly under the centre of the crater (0:43). Which is why it was flowing north out from under the back wall at one point as I recall.

@@JustIcelandic Temperature scale is a great idea. I was going to write a comment about it, but well... I was 5 hours late. I don't know how your camera works exactly, but in many models you can chose a point on a screen from where camera will read more precise temperature. In more static shots like in 0:49 it would work. Dark surfaces heat up a lot more in the sun than lighter ones, so to get a better idea of residual heat from the eruption, filming in early morning, especially under heavy overcast might be your best bet. I realize you don't get much darkness in late May, so your result may be better at other times of the year. But don't stop now! I love all your videos!

As an infrared interpreter, experienced in wildfire detection and mapping, I would add that dark colored rocks with a south or west facing aspect then to receive more solar heating than the surrounding land forms, thus showing a higher relative heat. Scanning at different times of day may result in a different image.

Does that show the lava is still cooling and is the fumeroles coming from the underground area or just gas escaping the fresh lava beds?

Still some technical issues to solve, to record the reading from the thermometer, I can see it on the screen, but not in the recording

Would be nice to have some kind of reference on what the color means in relation to temperature. Some kind of scale to know that that red spot, for example, is 45'C.

Still a few things to figure with the temp. reading in the drone :) will solve them :) It works but I cannot record the temp. reading.

It'll be a few more years before this now ground becomes trustworthy, right?
@JustIcelandic
@JustIcelandic Год назад
Fully trustworthy yes but it depends on the depth of the lava, it differs a lot

I think for the more abstract shots where you don't have a lot of contrast like these the thermal "window" in the normal camera view is defnitely the coolest!

@JustIcelandic

It's possible to clime there but it perhaps not a good idea, the magma is deep around there and still extremely hot under the hardened shell around the crater

hvenær helduru að það verði örrugt að ganga í gíginn? finnst það alltaf mjög freistandi þegar ég sé hann. ekki er hættulegt að ganga í gamla gíga. afhverju ætti þessi að vera öðruvísi?

Ég hef ekkert heyrt um það og myndi halda að það færi að vera i lagi á ákveðnum stöðum, en hvaða stöðum er kannski erfiðara að svara svo þetta sé allt öruggt.

Wow! So essentially, the lava flow from that eruption is STILL on-going under the crusting top?! That's amazing!
@JustIcelandic
@JustIcelandic Год назад
It's still molten lava under there, it's very thick and can can be used to bake bread for the decades to come :)

@@JustIcelandic Yeah, I KNOW! WOW! That's really like, wow,, no jokes! That eruption "ended" some time ago, the lava "flow" carried on under its crusty top.
@AndrewJamesWilliams

Impressive both with this video and the normal non-thermal version. Thing is those lava flows will remain hot for years even though both eruptions have stopped as it takes a long time for most lavas to cool as while the surface layers have cooled quite a bit beneath the surface - if you went down like a meter or two - the rock would still be glowing semi-molten.
